Catechetical Sunday ~ The Hearts that Give the Gift!
The heart of the catechist receives the Gift [of Jesus] and in turn offers it to others as a Gift.
What a little word: gift! The catechist is conscious of having received a gift, the gift of faith,
and he or she then gives that gift in turn to others. This is something beautiful! ~ Pope Francis
Thank You to all of our Catechists!!

Finally, we give thanks to God together, and literally “go in
peace”. This is a wonderful way and time to celebrate this sacra-
ment, and especially to come and celebrate as a family. I want to
remind parents that bringing their children to celebrate the sacra-
ments is primarily their responsibility and not the school’s or the
religious education program they may be a part of. It is so im-
portant to lead by example, and certainly most beneficial to ex-
perience the power of this great sacrament that can bring so
much positive grace and goodness to our lives. If it has been a
while, then all the more reason. Never be afraid. This is one of
God’s greatest gifts, and all of us are here to help you to experi-
ence the joy and peace of being reconciled and forgiven. This past Sunday evening we once again offered the opportunity
for Eucharistic Adoration right after the 5 pm Mass and conclud-
ed with Night Prayer and Benediction at 7:45 pm. It went very
well and a very good number of people took advantage of this
special intimate time to spend with our Lord. Our hope is that
there will be more and more people who come to deepen their
relationship with Christ present in the Blessed Sacrament. We
will also be offering this great opportunity on Friday mornings
right after the 7 am Mass and conclude with the Chaplet of Div-
ing Mercy and Benediction at 10:30. Spread the word. Come
whenever you can and for as long as you can. We hope that chil-
dren and youth will come to appreciate this beautiful way of
being with the Lord and growing in God’s love. I just want to remind all our liturgical ministers to please do eve-
rything they can to make the afternoon of Renewal and Reflec-
tion next Sunday, September 25th, from 1:00 til 3:00 a high
priority as we together deepen our appreciation for the great
privilege we have in the celebration of the sacred liturgy. We
often concentrate on “function” rather than the deeper spirituality
and meaning of what we do, and hopefully these short hours will
help us to deepen our sense of being called to this sacred minis-
try. It is such a great privilege to have these special roles in the
liturgy and we should always do everything we can to fulfill
them with the utmost holiness. This week we officially begin the beautiful season of Autumn.
As the leaves on our tress turn their beautiful colors and fall to
the ground, as the temperatures become colder and the days
shorter, and as Winter approaches, we are reminded that it is
only through death that we can experience new life. There are so
many great lessons in the changing of the seasons. Enjoy each
season for its own unique beauty and character, and learn the
lessons they leave for us. We die to our old selves, so that we can
rise with Christ. Have a great week, and may you continually
experience the joy and peace of the Risen Lord. God be with
you. In God’s love,
My Sisters and Brothers, Our Gospel this weekend is all about stewardship and accounta-
bility. Those certainly are important themes any time of the
year and are essential elements for a responsible person of faith.
For that matter, they affect every area of responsibility in our
lives. What we do with the gifts entrusted to us will always be
important in how we accomplish our goals and reach our poten-
tial. It counts even more in the things that matter to God. Howev-
er, in this Gospel St. Luke uses the example of the unjust steward
to demonstrate at least the effort, ingenuity, and clever, but dis-
torted thinking of a steward who wasted the resources that were
given to him. It certainly makes a point, but clearly shows that we
need to live by different standards. There is no deceiving God
when it comes to real accountability. God knows what He has
given us, especially in the talents and resources with which we
have been blessed. And God fully knows how we are utilizing
these gifts. Imagine if we put the same effort into developing our
spiritual lives that we do into our careers, hobbies, sports, leisure
endeavors, etc. It seems at times we are willing to go to all ends
to make those areas as good as they possibly can be, even to the
point of sometimes going overboard. Then, when it comes to our
spiritual lives and our stewardship as disciples of Christ we often
find ourselves falling short, doing the minimum, or just skating
by. It is as if God does not hold us accountable. The truth is, God
does and God will. It may not be in the same way and immediate-
ly, but since everything we have, time, talent and resources is a
pure gift from God, God will expect a return on how we use
those gifts for the good of the Kingdom. There will be no fooling
God or crooked accountability. The wise person is one who is
always conscious and committed to giving his or her best in eve-
ry way, with the gratitude that God always gives us what is best.
Take another look. This weekend the Church throughout the United States celebrates
Catechetical Sunday. At this time of the year when our Cath-
olic schools and many faith formation programs resume, we ask
God to bless our efforts to share our faith, and we thank God for
all those who have responded to His call to be teachers, cate-
chists, aides, administrators and helpers of any kind. Every per-
son in every catechetical ministry is important and is a part of
God’s plan. Thank you for your generous stewardship in sharing
your gifts in so many ways. Only God can fully measure the har-
vest of spiritual growth and Christian discipleship that is fostered
in our many faith formation programs. Please continue to offer
your deepest prayers, support and good example, that we can
enable each other to grow in faith and respond to God’s call. We
are so blessed by so many of our people who are willing to share
their gifts in these ministries. Thank you so much. This Monday, September 19th, we celebrate the Sacrament of
Reconciliation as a community at 7:00 pm in the church. As
you know, we pray together, reflect on God’s love and mercy
together, look into our hearts and express our sorrow together,
and then there is opportunity for the individual confession of our
sins and absolution through several priests who will be available.

LITURGY CORNER
Today’s First Reading paints a picture of people only concerned with self: destroying the poor,
trampling the needy, and awaiting the Sabbath’s end to return to unjust practices. In today’s Gospel
reading, Jesus praises an unjust steward for finding ways to save himself that also do good for oth-
ers. Self-preservation is a natural inclination, but so is trying to right the wrongs that harm our sis-
ters and brothers and creation. Work to help the less fortunate around you. At St. Gabriel, we have
many organizations that can use volunteers and assistance that reach out and provide relief and
comfort to the less fortunate. What gifts do you have that you can share with others?
Remember that on Monday, September 19, at 7pm, we are offering a Communal Reconciliation Service. Our recon-
ciliation services are very moving, and those who participate leave feeling refreshed and renewed. Any time is a
good time for reconciliation, but as we’re about halfway through the long period of Ordinary Time between Pente-
cost and Advent, it’s a great time to take advantage of God’s mercy through reconciliation. Several priests will be
here to assist in the celebration.
Communal Penance September 19th - 7:00pm
On Monday, September 19th, at 7:00pm in the Church, we are having a Communal Pen-
ance Celebration. It has been our tradition to offer communal penance celebrations during Advent and Lent. In recent years we added another celebration in September because people were asking for another communal oppor-tunity. The beginning of a new school year and year of par-ish activities is a great time to do this. Experiencing the healing mercy and forgiveness of Jesus in this powerful sacrament is a wonderful way to ground us in the message of the Gospel. Please plan to join us in prayer!

Music Notes …
Treasure versus heart. The readings this weekend can make us feel a bit uncomfortable. Do we cling too tightly to "treasure?" Are we really doing all we can for those less fortunate than us? This weekend is Catechetical Sun-day - when we recognize and pray for those who teach and model our faith. Our faith IS in action when we min-ister to the poor. Many opportunities to make this minis-try a vital part of your life are available- through prayer and volunteerism. Where are you being called to serve? "God has chosen me, God has chosen me to bring Good News to the poor." From "God Has Chosen Me." !
