TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The readings today center on mindfulness, awareness of where we stand in God’s plan. The mountain of Sinai carries a message of the majesty and distance of God, while Jesus’ pres-ence as host of the banquet speaks of intimacy and mystery. September’s shadow calls us all to mindfulness as we prepare to return to life outside of summer. The Christian life holds these two places of knowledge of God in careful balance. Even in the accounts of the Passion we see the table of the upper room in balance with the Mount of Olives. Altar means “high place,” yet it is also a table. The former liturgy of the Latin Rite began with the priest bowing at the foot of the altar’s three steps, chanting Introibo ad altare Dei, or “I will go to the altar of God,” followed by the altar servers’ re-sponse, “The God who gives joy to my youth.” Many parishion-ers can recall and recite this scene by heart. As with so many things in liturgy, there are layers of meaning in our worship. The altar table evokes memories of the high places once re-served for encounter with the holy, and the intimacy of the table where hospitality draws us to share food and drink. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Altar Flower Dedication Worship in our church is an experience of beauty. The flowers in the sanctuary are an important and beautiful symbol of what we offer to God in our worship. Every member of the parish is invited to contribute to the beauty of our worship by giving the altar flowers on a particular Sunday in memory, thanksgiving or celebration for people or events that are important to that donor. There will be one dedication per Weekend. The cost for the flowers is $65 or $100. If you would like to make such a gift, please contact Angie O'Neill at 382-2504. Thank you in advance for your generosity and for contribution to the beauty of our worship.

ABOUT THE BOOK Popular blogger Kathryn Whitaker is a Dr Pepper su-perfan, Aggie-loving, type A mom of six with a personality the size of her native Texas. The stressful premature birth of her fifth child threw her orderly world into chaos and ultimately led her to rethink her priorities. In Live Big, Love Bigger, Whitaker shares her journey and challenges you to under-stand that you, too, can live a life of authenticity with joy-filled purpose, love, and faith. Her sassy authenticity will make you laugh—and cry—while encouraging you to be honest about mistakes in every area of your life, em-brace them, and find a way to let God redeem it all. ABOUT THE AUTHOR KathrynWhitaker is a sixth-generation Texan, Catholic author, blogger, speaker, and freelance graphic designer who shares what it’s like rais-ing a raucous Catholic family on teamwhitaker.org.

HUMILITY Humility is a virtue we don’t see much in our times. It seems that bragging, swaggering, and arrogance dominate our fashion for everything and our Internet conversations. Who has-n’t been irritated by the “trolls” who try (usually with bad gram-mar and poor spelling) to start an online fight with those whose opinions do not align with theirs? Our stores, catalogs, and online shopping sites are full of useless items geared in use and price to the very rich, as ordinary, useful things seem to fade off the sales scene. As the rich get richer, the poor get poorer and the middle class is fading away. What is the antidote to this? Humility is a good place to start. Devotion to God is worth more than riches. “The father of orphans and the defender of widows is God in his holy dwelling. God gives a home to the forsaken; [God] leads forth prisoners to prosperity.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

DR. ALVEDA KING – CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST - COMING TO ST. AUGUSTINE CHURCH, SEPT. 14, 2019. Abortion is the leading cause of death in the United States. Not only that, but in Memphis and the rest of the country, abortion is disproportionately killing African American babies. The poor, the marginalized, and minorities are entering the doors of Planned Parenthood in Memphis to abort their children. It is time to wake Memphis up, and specifically the Church, to the fact that abortion is now the greatest civil rights issue facing the United States today. A group of Catholic Memphis Cursillistas and the Memphis Coalition for Life is excited to announce that evangelist Dr. Alveda King, the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is coming to Memphis to address the public on this very topic! As the Executive Director of Civil Rights for the Unborn, Dr. King will inspire Christians from all denominations to get involved in the fight to end the atrocity of abortion in Memphis and to save lives from abortion. The free talk and luncheon will be held on Sat. Sept. 14 at 10 AM to 1 PM at St. Augustine Church, 1169 Kerr Avenue, Memphis, TN 38106 and is open to the public.
