APRIL 22, 2012 ~ 3RD SUNDAY OF EASTER
Thoughts For The Week Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Some years ago, when I was in England, I saw a
Midevil Mystery Play performed by the Royal Shakespeare
Theater Company. In a scene after the resurrection, the
apostles are sitting in a circle, talking over all that has
happened. There is one empty place, where Judas used to
sit. Isn’t it often the case that we always sit in the same order
around the table for a meal or in the same place in a church
and so we quickly know who is missing? The group of
apostles stop talking as Jesus enters the room. He is now
dressed in white to show that he has risen from the dead.
The apostles look shocked and a hush descends upon
the room. Slowly Jesus walks around the circle of his friends
and caresses the head and shoulders of each one. He comes
to the place that is now empty. He stops, has a look of
sadness on his face and slowly caresses the outline and
emptiness of Judas’ head and shoulders. We see that Jesus
continues to love Judas in spite of the kiss of betrayal and its
consequences which led to Jesus’ arrest, mock trial, brutal
suffering and death on the cross. Jesus moves on slowly to
the next apostle in the circle. He then celebrates a meal with
them all and shares his peace with them.
This Sunday the Gospel Lesson helps us to deepen our
faith in the meaning of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead and
is intended to strengthen our response. We hear the ending
of the Emmaus story in which the two disciples walk with
downcast hearts from Jerusalem to Emmaus. A stranger, in
fact Jesus whom they do not recognize, walks by their side
and during the course of the journey helps them to make
sense of recent events, and come to understand what has
happened at the Last Supper and crucifixion. Before he
leaves them he shares a meal, breaks bread – and the two
disciples recognize him as the risen Christ. They come to
faith and believe in him. They run back to Jerusalem, where
today’s Gospel begins.
Some early believers found it difficult to believe in the
true meaning of the resurrection and thought that when
Jesus appeared to his disciples, he was only a ghost. St. Luke
wants them to understand that Jesus is not a ghost but truly
risen from the dead. His risen body bears within it the
marks of the five wounds. His eating with them shows that
he has a bodily reality and is not just a spirit. After the
resurrection, there is continuity with his earthly life and yet
also a break or discontinuity which indicates that he is
transformed.
Jesus invites trust in God’s mercy and teaches his
disciples that he has reconciled the world to the Father. The
sacrifice on Calvary means that our sins are forgiven and we
can be restored to right relationship with God. In the face of
sin and wrongdoing, there is no need to despair, but the
hope of new life and transformation can be offered. We see
this symbolically in the mystery play when Jesus desires to
forgive Judas, but tragically Judas has made his own final
choice away from God.
While many people find it difficult to believe that their
sins are forgiven, others have lost the deep meaning of sin
and can be rather dismissive of the need for forgiveness.
Today’s Scripture Lessons offer a message of hope and
encouragement: all sin can be forgiven and the slate wiped
clean.
For those who find forgiveness difficult, our belief and
faith can offer a witness to the hope of being forgiven. For
those who dismiss the need for repentance and forgiveness,
the central message of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is a
reminder of this hope. As we walk the path with people
struggling with weakness and failure, the hope of the Gospel
is that this is not a final state. Rather than condemnation and
judgement, we can offer the gentle word of mercy and the
warmth of compassion. By the wounds of Jesus we are
healed.
The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation
continues to offer the guarantee of the forgiveness of sins
with the reassurance of the words of absolution. God’s love
can embrace any transgressions or failures if we are ready to
confess our need in the power of the Lord’s mercy and have
faith that he will give us his peace.
In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely—visit
them if you can. Also, please remember to pray for all who
have wandered from the faith, and all who have died. May
God always be pleased with us!
Monsignor Michael
Third Sunday of Easter ~ Stewardship thought
Our Lord’s call to avoid sin by following His commandments, to repent, and to seek forgiveness are the common
themes in today’s Scripture passages. Through His death and Resurrection, Jesus freed us from sin. Christian stewards ac-
knowledge His true presence in the Eucharist, as did the disciples on the road to Emmaus in the breaking of the bread. The
Church has long taught that partaking of the Eucharist strengthens us on our journey as Christ’s disciples, and that partici-
pating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation can draw us closer to Him, bringing peace to our lives.

Easter Vacation. the students returned to school on the 17th of
April, wearing their summer uniforms.
On the 19th, we had a clothing drive - open to parish and
school families and any friends who would want to clean out
their closets at this time, provided the clothing is in good
condition.
On Friday, the 20th, the 6th and 7th Grade students visited the
St. Katharine Drexel Shrine in Bensalem, Pa. and the St. John
Newmann Shrine in Philadelphia.
In the early evening on Saturday, "Tricky Tray" doors opened
around 5 p.m. Pauline Martino, a parent of two former
graduates, organized the Event. We are grateful to her and to
all our parents and students who worked to make Tricky Tray
a success.
On Tuesday the 24th, the Kindergarten children will visit the
Turtle Back Zoo.
Measurements of uniforms will take place on April 25th from
9 to 10;30 a.m. Both present and new students are reminded to
come prepared for new measurements.
The 25th of April is Secretaries' Day. We wish to honor Mrs.
Kelly Albright for her wonderful service to our school. Her
constant smile tells us how happy she is to be working at our
school.
Spring Photos will be taken on Friday, April 27th. Dress in
your very nice clothing.
Are we busy? Yes, we are!
Added to the above, of course, are all our prayers, Religion
Classes, and our Major courses each day, along with our minor
sessions on certain days. Do we give our best to our learning and
to our prayer time? Yes, we certainly do!
Ask your children to join us! They will love it!

Root of All Evil? St. Paul is often misquoted as saying “Money is the root of
all evil.” He said no such thing. Money helps feed the
hungry, clothe the naked, & build homeless shelters,
schools and churches.
