HELPING THOSE IN NEED

A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU to the many parishioners and groups who have provided Snack Bags for our neighbors in need! Because of your spirit of charity and generosity, we have been able to give up to 50 Snack Bags a week. The people who receive these are MOST grateful for the extra food to help them through their day! If you, your parish group, school or family would like to pro-vide snack bags, please call the Parish Office. Monetary contribu-tions are also appreciated, allowing us to purchase bus passes and offer other assistance when appropriate to those who come to us for help. Please use the Poor Pipe in the back of the Church or bring your donation to the Office. Thank you!

First Light Shelter for Homeless Women and Children

Many thanks to our Cathedral volunteers who provide the evening meal or stay overnight at First Light every other month throughout the year! Your dedication and commitment to serving the home-less is not only deeply appreciated by the guests and staff at First Light, but also a beacon of hope for our community. Our upcoming dates to serve are April 8-14 and June 10-16. If you would like to learn more about this parish ministry, please call or email Nancy Heck (205-870-1349/ [email protected]).

VEILED IMAGES AND UNBLEACHED CANDLES FOR PASSIONTIDE

The  Sunday  before  Palm  Sunday was  tradi onally  known  as  Passion  Sunday.  It was  on  that  day  that  the  church’s  principal  images (statues/crucifixes) were veiled for the remainder of Lent. This was, at least in part, because the gospel for that day said that Jesus “hid himself, and went out of the temple” (John 8:59). The veiling of images of our Lord and his saints adds to the peniten al “feel” of the Lenten season as we approach his death on Good Friday and mourn his  me in the tomb. Thus also the use of unbleached beeswax candles: they contrast with the more fes ve white of the bleached candles that we tradi onally see throughout the year. Unbleached candles may actually be used not only during Passion de but whenever purple is worn – so almost all of Lent and Advent. Historically, they were most o en used on Good Friday and for the Office of Tenebrae. Apart from peniten al seasons, they may also be used as a sign of mourning at funeral Masses. Details such as these add wonderful variety to our celebra ons and enhance their spiritual mean-ing. The conclusion of Lent is a more reserved and somber  me; may we all strive to be recollected and unite ourselves to the liturgical movement, so to prepare ourselves for a wonderful celebra on of Easter!

Swieconka * Polish Easter Basket Blessing Cathedral of St. Paul‐Holy Saturday, March 31 at 9:00am

All are welcome! Swieconka (sh-vee-en-soon-kah) is one of the most enduring and beloved Polish tradi ons. Baskets containing a sampling of East-er foods are brought to church to be blessed on Holy Saturday. The basket is tradi onally lined with a white linen or lace napkin and  decorated  with  sprigs  of  boxwood  (bukszpan),  the  typical Easter evergreen. This food is shared on Easter morning in a ritu-al breaking of the fast.
