The Cathedral Connection 24 th Sunday of the Year 13 September 2015 Vol. 4 Issue 27 Sacred Heart Cathedral parish is a partner in the Wellington Central Pastoral Area with St Mary of the Angels (CBD), and the Catholic Parish of Otari (Wilton and Karori) Today is the start of Social Justice Week and is an opportunity for the whole church to consider Catholic Social Teaching on a particular social justice issue facing our society. In 2015, the theme is “Kiwi Families: It’s Our Story- What does it take for all families to flourish?’ The readings of the day speak to us of God’s support and presence in times of hardship and difficulty, practically caring for those in need, and the cost of following Christ. In our first reading from Isaiah we are reminded of our innate dignity as children of God and trust that God is with us in our time of need. This is reflected in the Psalm when we are reminded that our God is a just and compassionate God who cares for those who are helpless and in difficulty. God draws close to families in difficulty. In the reading from James the importance of faith that is lived out in a practical care for the poor and needy, for individuals and families is emphasised. A living faith is one that cares for those around us who are struggling. In the last part of today’s Gospel Jesus is asking us to persevere, to surrender. He is asking us to let go of our ego desires and to live out of the place of the Christ within. As he reached out to others, and ultimately giving his life for all humanity, we are asked to give ourselves fully to the task of loving God and loving others even when it costs us. Let us go forth from here today trusting in the unfailing love and presence of God to do what we can for others in their time of difficulty and need. God bless, Mary-Anne Peetz

24th

Sunday of the Year 13 September 2015 Vol. 4 Issue 27

Sacred Heart Cathedral parish is a partner in the Wellington Central Pastoral Area with St Mary of the Angels (CBD), and

the Catholic Parish of Otari (Wilton and Karori)

Today is the start of Social Justice Week and is an opportunity for the whole church to consider Catholic Social Teaching on a particular social justice issue facing our society. In 2015, the theme is “Kiwi Families: It’s Our Story- What does it take for all families to flourish?’

The readings of the day speak to us of God’s support and presence in times of hardship and difficulty, practically caring for those in need, and the cost of following Christ.

God bless,

Mary-Anne Peetz

‘YOU ARE OUR HEARTS’ DESIRE’ a seminar to explore the role of desire in prayer and spiritual life will involve seeing how desire is at the very heart of our lives, of the life of God in the Trinity and in the special action of the Holy Spirit shaping our attitudes and actions. On this foundation, we then consider desire in action, namely, when we pray:

a) keeping in mind the basics, b) dealing with negative emotions, c) what to do when we hit a wall.

This seminar will be presented by Rev. Dr. Tom Ryan SM a Marist priest who grew up in Wellington. Father Tom has lived in Australia for many years and has taught and written in the areas of theology, spirituality and morality. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Catholic University and an Adjunct Associate Professor of the University of Notre Dame Australia. The Seminar will be held on Saturday, September 26 from 9.30 a.m. – 12 noon and on Thursdays October 1, 8, and 15 from 6pm – 7pm in St Mary of the Angels Hall, Boulcott Street.
