PENNS WOODS WIN ERYPenns Woods Win ery is the re sult of Gino Razzi's life time of ex pe ri ence in the world of wine. Are spected im porter and dis trib u tor of wine, Gino is an Ital ian im mi grant from Abruzzo in south ern It aly. He set tled in the Del a ware County area in 1962, where he was fos tered by the area’s Ital -ian-Amer i can com mu nity. Gino served four years in the US Ma rines then at tended col lege in Cal -i for nia. Af ter grad u a tion, he re turned to Penn syl va nia to re join fam ily and friends.

With three de cades of suc cess as a wine im porter, in 1995, Gino turned his ex pe ri ence to wards the craft of wine mak ing. He fin ished his first wine in 1997. Sym po sium, a Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, was his first com mer cially re leased wine, and was awarded 95 points by Wine Spec ta tor Mag a -zine. This pub li ca tion re cently hon ored this wine again with its in clu sion in the ret ro spec tive ar ti -cle “It aly’s Golden Vin tage - the 1997 Har vest” in 2007.

Gino’s pur suit of per fec tion led him to his own back yard. In 2002, he be gan to craft wines fromPenn syl va nia–grown grapes. To his sur prise, he found that great wines can be made in Penn syl va -nia. Af ter a two year search for an ideal vine yard site, Gino de cided to pur chase the SmithbridgeWin ery, in 2004, to take ad van tage of its 25-year-old vines.

Gino is con vinced that Penn syl va nia has the ca pa bil ity to pro duce world-class wines and hopes to con trib ute to the leg acy of hard work and art istry of his pre de ces sors. As a sym bol of these as pi ra -tions, one dol lar from the pro ceeds of each bot tle of Penns Woods wines is do nated to fur ther ingwine and grape re search in Penn syl va nia.

CHEMICAL CONSULTANTS NETWORK

SEPTEMBER 14, 2011 MEETING

Visit our website at www.chemconsultants.org

Date & Time: Wednesday, September 14, at the Cynwyd Club, Bala Cynwyd, PA Networking, 5:30 PM; Dinner, 6:30 PM; Talk and Business Session, 7:30 PM

Bookkeeping For Consultants

Panel Discussion

Abstract: All independent consultants need to keep track of billable hours, billable and/or tax deductible expenses, accounts receivable, and prepare invoices. A recent discussion on the CCN LinkedIn site evoked many responses and several ways of doing this, ranging from handwritten notes to sophisticated software and hired bookkeepers. The panel will present their approaches, including QuickBooks, spreadsheets and handwritten records. This will be an interactive session with (hopefully) lots of ideas from the audience as well. Panelists: Dr. William (Bill) Golton (Moderator) has been a consultant and a (ret.) executive at The CECON Group for many years. Prior to becoming a consultant he worked for DuPont as an analytical chemist and manager, quality manager, and project manager. He is a founder of the CCN and is a published expert on chemical consulting. Bill does his record keeping by hand and his invoices with a template. Dr. Ron Bihovsky is a medicinal chemistry and organic chemistry consultant and the founder of Key Synthesis LLC, a custom synthesis company specializing in synthesis of biologically active compounds. He also performs experimental work and testifies as an expert witness in pharmaceutical patent cases. He previously worked as a medicinal chemist in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry, and conducted research natural product synthesis in academia. He currently serves as chairman of the Chemical Consultants Network. Ron uses QuickBooks for all of his record keeping and invoices. Dr. John Newport provides consulting and R&D services through Cheminnolab and Chemventive in which he is a partner. Previous to this he was a Senior Research Fellow at Hercules Incorporated where, in his 34-year career there, he worked on the R&D side of the fibers, film, RIM, resins and paper businesses. His areas of expertise cover polymer chemistry, surface chemistry, rheology and transport phenomena. John does his bookkeeping with spreadsheets and his invoices with a template. Location: The Cynwyd Club, 332 Trevor Lane, Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004. Please park in lot if space is available; otherwise park on Trevor Lane. If lost, call the club at 610-667-4524, ext. 2. seeks an swers. He points out that much of what we have al ready learned from sci ence can ex -plain some of the phe nom ena, but ad di tional ques tions of ten arise. Won der ing about the skystim u lates thoughts on the so lar sys tem, the Hub ble tele scope, the na ture of light, and spacetravel. Won der ing about re al ity prompts fur ther thoughts on per cep tion, and the work ofBoltzmann and Niels Bohr.

Won der ing about mat ter stirs one to think also about the pe ri odic ta ble, at oms, the work ofHeisenberg and Schröding er, and chem i cal bonds. Won der ing about our selves leads to imag i na -tion, the car bon atom, the or i gins of life, and nat u ral se lec tion. Re turn ing to fur ther thoughts ofthe sky, Strumfels causes the reader to think about the stars, con stel la tions, mea sur ing as tro nom -i cal dis tances, and the uni verse.

In won der ing about the fu ture, the au thor of fers nearly 30 pre dic tions on trans por ta tion, farm -ing, ed u ca tion, com mu ni ca tion and many other top ics. He also makes us look at the past withre spect to the big bang the ory, fos sils, ice ages, and mass ex tinc tion, among oth ers. These top ics and many other im pon der a bles are broached by the au thor through out this in trigu ing book.

De spite his use of sci ence to ex plain much of the world around us, there are still ques tions to bean swered. But will the an swers be re solved by fu ture sci ence, or will they sim ply be re placedwith fur ther ques tions? Strumfels leads read ers on a jour ney to make sense of the world inwhich we live—a world that be comes even more cu ri ous the more we think we un der stand it.
