It is time again for our Pirates Dance.
Please mark your calendars for March 7, 2009 as we once again transform our Recreation Center into a swash buckling extravaganza! Last year’s dance was a wonderful success. We had more than 200 residents who came in their best pirate attire, ate great food, socialized with their neighborhood friends, and danced the night away!! Get ready. We are doing it again and doing it better!
A committee is hard at work to provide you with an amazing night of fun. Great neighbors such as Jennifer and Jim Gregory, Dru Albano, Jim and Barbara Blanco, Cathy Bryner, Frank Perrelli, Janice Coulton, Mark Killen and Hannah Forman are all a part of this hardworking team.
The FunkMonster Band will be the night's entertainment . . beginning with a soft jazz dinner hour, bringing back their Tina Turner show, and possibly adding an Elvis show and
ending with all your favorite funky hits that are sure to get you on the dance floor! The residents wanted more of this great seven-piece band, and they were excited for the invitation. The FunkMonsters consider the Pirates Dance as one of their favorite venues!

The Pirates Dance is fast approaching.
What is impressive though is the number of committee members. The current CCA board is committed to making our neighborhood one of the most desireable to purchase a home in and raise a family.
It is our belief that Realtors are selling this feature (community events), in addition to all the physical amenities. We believe these events add value in this regard, while facilitating the opportunity for new residents to meet their neighbors and learn more about their community. This also gives us an opportunity to utilize our newly built Recreation Center on a neighborhood scale,
which might entice some of those attending to rent it.
A great big thanks to everyone that helped with the luminaria distribution, especially Russell Adams and family, Doug Driscoll and family, Neil and Shannon Norden and family, the Jack and Jeanine Parrish family, and Kevin Peterson. All of these residents towed their trailers down to the beach and loaded the bags of sand for distribution as well as helped with collection the following day.
The boat parade turned out nicely as well, we estimated 25 participants. Maybe next year the CCA will order pizza as there were a lot of spectators.
Duke Mark Snellgrove and Duchess Nancy Otten will have the honors to crown our newly elected Duke and Duchess.
Your vote counts! Vote for a male and female that have been a contributing force in the neighborhood. Get your pirate attire together (we will honor the best dressed). It will be a night to remember.
Come join our Krewe as we sail the night away! Until then . . . Bon Voyage! Coming to the Pirates Dance? RSVP as soon as possible!

At the regular Board meeting held on January 12th, Richard Larcomb stepped down as the Community Development Committee Chairman, (CDC) and Greg Wehling was appointed Chairman and ratified by the Board of Trustees. The project Greg will be directing is the construction of the restrooms at OCP. The work is in progress with the permit being pulled, and bidding taking place. We should see this project completed by April or May.
worked tirelessly to achieve the Board’s goals as well as his own.
he Board of Trustees takes this opportunity to thank Rich Larcomb for his hard work. Of course, Rich will still be involved, not only as a CRD Board Trustee, but as White Sands Beach Chairman.
The Board of Trustees discussed various subjects.
One issue is the boat ramp at White Sands Beach. The Board is in the process of having engineers determine what can be done with the ramp, especially when there is a low water level. Of course, whatever the outcome, the EPC must grant us a permit to do the construction assuming that it is within our budget.
For residents living along Lacewood and Phoenix Circle, the Board of Trustees has been working on controlling the potato vines which have taken over the preserve. Davey, our ground maintenance people, have been instructed to advise the Board of what would be needed to fix the problem and how much it would cost. Also, the EPC needs to grant us a permit in order to do any cutting. We will keep everyone advised about this situation.
Each resident should be diligent when driving or walking past our parks. Remember that our tax dollars help keep our community clean, well groomed and hopefully, safe.
Recently, we had vandalism at Original Carrollwood Park. The potty porter was turned over and graffiti placed over the playground area. At Scotty Cooper Park, the bathroom door was left opened and a small fire set on the grass. Gratefully, it wasn’t anything serious, but it could have been.
Be mindful of our surroundings and parks and if you believe you see something which can be a problem, call the sheriff or the Board Chairman of that particular park.
On behalf of the community, t

Late in December 2008, we introduced 400 weed eating carp to the lake to help control our hydrilla weeds. Because we received so many lake contributions we were able to increase the amount we put in from 300 to 400. In fact, we are
now receiving lake contributions from individuals all around the lake, outside of Original Carrollwood.
We thank you for your support and encourage those that have not contributed to the Lake fund yet to do so. In the spring we’re going to evaluate herbicide treatment as an additional tool to assist in our lake weed control.
Members of the CCA and CRD boards came out to cheer on the carp as they were put into the lake by Nick Reale at Eco Pond Rescue, a company that specializes in Lake Management efforts. Check out these pictures of our new residents! Nick Reale, Mark Snellgrove, Jim Powell, Tom Scallon, Rich Larcomb

The following is a story submitted for publication by 3 junior reporters - Kaelyn Escuadra (age 7), Ashby Kannwischer (age 3) and Danica Kannwischer (age 5) granddaughters of Ken and Linda Beckham who reside at 11739 Lipsey Road.
7:32 pm on December 27th, 2008.Four firemen arrived at 11738 Lipsey Road, our neighbor's house across the street. We don’t know what happened. Our next door neighbor, Terri Prado, came outside to watch the firemen. She told us the alarm in the house keeps setting off. The firemen come over and they shine lights at the house to see if anything is wrong. They walked around the house looking for clues of a break-in or a fire. But everything was okay. Then we knew what happened.
Project Achieve: Your Time Will Make Such a DifferenceHi, my name is Amy Stephenson. I am the Reading Coach at Carrollwood Elementary. Project Achieve is a volunteer tutoring program. We have had many retirees and stay-at-home moms from the Carrollwood community volunteer to tutor first grade students but we need more.
Those who volunteer give one hour per week in two 30 minute sessions. The time chosen to volunteer to read with a child is flexible but must take place during the school day (8am - 2pm). Many of the children just need additional, but consistent, one-on-one help. You’ll also be asked to attend a one hour training session before you begin tutoring. Please call Patty Corneillie or Amy Stephenson at Carrollwood Elementary at 975-7640.
Independent Day School celebrated its 40th anniversary during late 2008. Festivities began with the Pledge of Allegiance and then a 5K run followed by many visits between faculty, staff, students, parents and alumnus. With a lakefront view, the campus is housed on Orange Grove Drive. 500 children attend classes from PreK3 to 8th Grade. www.idsYES.com

outside about 2:30am and tried to look out the window but because he is in a wheelchair and unable to stand, he could not see out the window. He did turn on his light however, but the voices and loud noises continued.
While my husband was pacing the sidewalk waiting for the police to arrive, he walked by our neighbor’s house which is empty (a rental house) and saw our boat in the back yard. It was obvious the would-be thieves had dragged the boat there to try to undo the lock on the hitch and the lock on the motor, in privacy. Since they were unable to lift the motor or undo the hitch-lock, they must have decided to leave.
The police tell us they were able to get a good set of fingerprints off the boat and are now clearing these through their database. Not only would this be grand theft, but burglary as well, since another residence was involved. The thieves obviously were well aware the house next door was unoccupied right now.
We live on Carrollwood Drive and the boat is kept right under a streetlight. My son said he heard several cars go by as this was happening. Thank goodness for the locks on the boat or I’m sure it would have been gone for good.
And this . . . from December 2008...
A silver Tacoma pick up truck with two male Hispanics was sighted parked on the edge of Orange Grove north of Whittington, taking pictures of the back yard of 2801 Whittington. The individuals went so far as to climb up on top of the truck to see over the wall.
The authorities have been notified about this incident. The license number of the pick up truck is: 287KPZ. This occurred during daylight.
Stay alert. Report all non-emergencies to HCSO at 247-8200. For emergencies, dial 911 immediately.

To all Carrollwood Board Members and all of Original Carrollwood
It sure is great to be back home!
We recently moved away to Tennessee for a short time only to find ourselves missing what the “OC” offered.
We missed the sidewalks, the mature trees, the friendly neighbors, the parks and especially White Sands Beach and Lake Carroll. We missed the weather, Publix grocer, the underground utilities and the closeness of all the surrounding shops and stores. We missed all the friends we’ve accumulated through the past five years.
We were very excited, but dreading the “move-in.” The dread soon began to fade when we saw a huge welcome back sign on our garage door, placed there by Connor’s very best friend, Jackson Coyne and his mom, Mickey.
The Caroler wants to hear from YOU! Got a story to share? Email us at dawnhudson@ tampabay.rr.com!
As soon as we backed the van up to the house, Mike Carnes came over to help unload. His wife Chris brought water and juice while their daughter Chelsea supervised the kids. Dennis and Teresa Lorrence came over. Craig Kalhofer came by and jumped into the truck as well; then Greg and Marnie Murin. Many more came by to say welcome back. We were overwhelmed! These folks came to help without being asked.
What took us eight hours to load (the past sixteen years of our lives) into a twenty-six-foot van, took us less than two hours to unload! What great friends!
Then to top it off, Original Carrollwood put on a boat parade honoring our return! Much thanks for all the help. We finally feel “at home.”

Donations for ‘Aged-out’ Foster Children
Dear Neighbors:
I would like to keep you updated on the progress we were able to accomplish. We were able to set up one youth named Calvin with a dresser, desk, chair, TV and a lot of small household items. He goes to school at night and he works during the day. I was able to visit the child and have to say that he was in dire need of items since the only thing he had was a tiny sofa. And since this is his first own place he was very, very thankful.
Special thanks to Linda, the Mehlenbachers, and Deaks who donated items. And to the Wester family who offered to donate more items.
Please remember that these children were placed into the “system’ not because they chose to be in it but because their parent(s) were not able to care for them or did not want to. To help these kids get started on their own will hopefully show them that there are a lot of people out there who still care.
If you have any items - small or big - down the road, please let me know so we can help other kids as well.
Additionally, thanks to Mark Snellgrove by assisting with this outreach.
THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH,

Anybody remember Al and Lorraine Conolly and family from Carrollwood Drive?
Back in the early 1960’s, he and his wife were lake front residents and actively served on the board. Recently Al’s daughter (Patricia Calhoun) discovered our website (she lives in New Jersey) and told her parents to take a look. They are now 87 and 85 and enjoying life in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The Conolly’s are mentioned in our online archives in a story about early Pirates Dances.
“Nice website” says Pat. “You have made an old man happy.” Mr. Conolly was former CEO/President of Wonder Bread. He moved to Philadelphia from Tampa to serve as president of Bond Bread back in the 60’s. Pat graduated from Chamberlain HS and USF. She remembers Dr. & Mrs. Allen (USF President) were neighbors two doors away. By the way, Pat notes that though the years have passed, OC friendships burn brightly; the Conolly’s keep in frequent touch with another original Original resident, Bill Heiner.

Dateline: April, 1966 (listen carefully & you can hear the clatter of the Teletype)
What’s a Teletype some young folks are asking… well, Google it!
To help us in our efforts to share some of 50 year old Original Carrollwood’s history, a couple of residents have provided stories about the tornado that struck in April of 1966. Have you got another perspective on that eventful time? Please tell us. Your tales can be sent to Tracy at [email protected] or dropped off at the Rec Center.
Mary Napoli wrote to tell us of her family’s move to Nakora & Picwood in September, 1962. She, husband, Chris and children, Joseph & Christa, built their home “out in the country” as other family members put it. With nothing but orange groves and peacocks… no paved roads to the north… it seemed like it. Mary was the principal at Forest Hills Elementary so it must not have seemed way out there to her. Chris taught music at Anderson School. In 1962, Christa was in the third grade at Lake Magdalene Elementary and Joseph, a freshman at FSU.
Four years later, when the tornado hit, Joseph was home on spring break and Christa was now at Carrollwood Elementary. Mary relates that the “damage was unbelievable.” After making sure her charges at Forest Hills were safe, she had to show identification to Sheriff ’s deputies to get into the neighborhood. What’s really unbelievable, and miraculous as Jane Kelly puts it, was that no one was seriously injured.
Jane, Jim and the four Kelly children moved to Valencia Road in December of 1962. In 1966, Jane was unaware that nature’s destructive force had bounced its way through our neighborhood. The storm had knocked out the power and no TV or radio could give her the
information. She found out when husband, Jim, who was at work downtown, heard the news and called to check on her. She walked just two blocks before finding the devastation left in the tornado’s wake. She was amazed to find her children were safe in school and no serious injuries in the neighborhood. Many neighbors worked with the Sheriffs to keep looters at bay for several days and nights.
Jane also fondly recalls the volunteer efforts she and Jim were involved in. Jim presided over the CCA in 1967. At that time there was a formal (white dinner jackets) installation banquet for the CCA board. They worked with the neighborhood Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. And, they worked hard to prevent the opening of a service station

at Lake Carroll Way & Dale Mabry. Many neighbors were determined to keep Dale Mabry from becoming commercialized. As she says, “we lost that one.”
“The Gregory family grew up in the Palma Ceia area, but we had a cabin on a lake off Tarpon Road. I vividly remember driving through Carrollwood a few weeks after the tornado hit. I recall thinking how awful it would have been to come home to such ruin.”
What do you recall of April, 1966?
Editors note: Another version of the Tornado story, authored by longtime resident, Lula Dovi, is featured on our neighborhood website along with other bits of Carrollwood history. www.originalcarrollwood.com.
Carrollwood History & Original CarrollwoodEditors note: Speaking of history... The Tampa Bay History Center will have opened on January 17, 2009. It is located directly behind the St Pete Times Forum.
As of press time, I had not toured the building, but have spoken with the marketing director about Carrollwood memorabilia, our Hudson family, being one of the earlier pioneers in the Carrollwood area. Cindy Bosselman reported that although the center houses more than 40,000 Tampa Bay artifacts, they are always seeking more items for their collection.
So, before you trash an old box of 'somethings' in a spring cleaning frenzy, consider contacting the center for an opinion on your items' historical value. Heretofore, only the library at USF was holding Carrollwood items, and those were strictly paper, pamphlets and old newsletters. I know this because I visited the library in 1999 to research a few local articles for the 'New Millennium” 2000. Overall, in my opinion, there is not nearly enough artifacts preserved anywhere about Carrollwood.
As Carrollwood lovers, note that the Carrollwood Cultural Center will host a social on March 30 at 5:30pm which celebrates all things Carrollwood.

The Pimpo family of Original Carrollwood proudly announce the adoption of their son and brother Demetrius.
CCA Board member Tracy Pimpo and husband Mark
The Pimpo Family
mentored Demetrius, who came into their lives via the Guardian Ad Litem program, for a year before the adoption process could be finalized.
Neighbor Betsey Hapner served as the adoption attorney; the adoption was officiated by the Honorable Katherine G. Essrig in late 2008.
Demetrius attends Hillsborough Baptist in Seffner where he plays football and basketball.
On the weekends, he rides his bike to Publix and works from 10am-5pm. In his spare time he enjoys playing the saxophone. And he attends Van Dyke Methodist church with the family. In January, Demetrius celebrated his 18th birthday.
The Pimpos are both active in the neighborhood; Tracy serves on the CCA board of directors; Mark has made a career out of serving in the US Navy; daughter McCall is studying cosmetology and follows in her mother’s footsteps; Tracy is a Master Hair Designer and has a shop on North Dale Mabry at Elite Salon.
Congratulations to the entire Pimpo family.
