She was very low and she herself didn’t expect to live through the night. Sr Claire, a sister of St Brigid, was with me. Claire left me alone with Geraldine for a time. So I asked her Ger how she was. “Not good” was the reply but in typical Geraldine fashion, she said: “What will be will be”. I gave her absolution and anointing and then shared the Eucharist with her. It was a privileged moment spent in just quiet prayer. After that, I asked her about who had been to visit her and she managed to name members of her families and the Brigidine sisters and even Br Leo. In that quietness I asked her if she had any worries. Again, in typical fashion, she looked at me and uttered a definite “Nope”! I then asked her to pray for me and that is when we both shed tears. I told her what a superb and wonderful friend she has been and that she was truly loved and so the tears kept flowing. I reminded her that her job now was to pray for her religious sisters, her family and the Carmelites. As both Claire and I left her quietly, I said, “I’ll see you, Ger!” and her last words to me were, “In heaven”. a hands-on preacher of the Gospel, a predictor of the future (which she often got wrong!), a definitive source of judgement on almost everyone who came to notice, a principal who cared deeply for her kids, a scrupulous manager of money, a sister and an aunt who loved her family passionately, a gifted artisan who always short-changed her own gifts, a woman of immense gratitude for the solicitude of her sisters both natural and religious, a lover of tinned chicken spread on crackers brought from Aldi, and, most importantly, a superb friend.

Geraldine faced death with an equanimity and calm that would be the envy of any saint. Not only that, she did so graciously and thankfully to all those who cared for her. We have indeed been blessed by her presence.

Geraldine Mary Stapleton csb entered her eternal reward on Thursday, 5 September at 11:20pm.

Pray for her as she will for us and let us do so that we may all meet merrily in heaven.

Requiem Mass for the repose of her wonderful soul will be held this Thursday morning at 10.30am at Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Child Protection SundayThis weekend, the Catholic Church in Australia marks Child Protection Sunday, on which we pray for those who have been abused, their families and supporters. We recognise the harm done by priests, religious and lay people in Church settings. We recommit to practices that support survivors and make the Catholic Church and its ministries the safest possible place for children and vulnerable adults.

You can find out more about the Church’s work in this area at: www.catholic.org.au/responseandprevention

A Prayer for Stronger Communities, Safer Children

Gracious God, you said "Let the children come to me".

The hurt felt by those wounded by abuse weighs heavily upon us.

Trust has been eroded when institutions failed to appropriately respond to their needs.

Lord, we as your Church stand in need of your healing and help.

We ask you, God, to strengthen and guide all in our Catholic communities.

Grant us wisdom in our time to make decisions that protect children and the vulnerable.

May our families and communities, through love, generosity, commitment and patience, build stronger communities safe for children.

Let your grace and love fall gently upon our children giving them the inner strength, peace and resilience they will need for their life’s journey.

We ask you, God, to help our Catholic communities to be resolute in building a community where our children flourish and are safe.

Amen.

In Every Age (Psalm 90: 1-4,12) Words & Music: Janet Sullivan Whitaker

Wisdom 9:13-18 What man can know the intentions of God?Who can divine the will of the Lord? The reasonings of mortals are unsureand our intentions unstable;for a perishable body presses down the soul, and this tent of clay weighs down the teeming mind.It is hard enough for us to work out what is on earth, laborious to know what lies within our reach;who, then, can discover what is in the heavens? As for your intention, who could have learnt it, had you not granted Wisdomand sent your holy spirit from above? Thus have the paths of those on earth been straightenedand men been taught what pleases you,and saved, by Wisdom.

Philemon 9-10, 12-17 This is Paul writing, an old man now and, what is more, still a prisoner of Christ Jesus. I am appealing to you for a child of mine, whose father I became while wearing these chains: I mean Onesimus. I am sending him back to you, and with him – I could say – a part of my own self. I should have liked to keep him with me; he could have been a substitute for you, to help me while I am in the chains that the Good News has brought me. However, I did not want to do anything without your consent; it would have been forcing your act of kindness, which should be spontaneous. I know you have been deprived of Onesimus for a time, but it was only so that you could have him back for ever, not as a slave any more, but something much better than a slave, a dear brother; especially dear to me, but how much more to you, as a blood-brother as well as a brother in the Lord. So if all that we have in common means anything to you, welcome him as you would me.

APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried;he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead;he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

gospel acclamation

Luke 14:25-33 Great crowds accompanied Jesus on his way and he turned and spoke to them. ‘If any man comes to me without hating his father, mother, wife, children, brothers, sisters, yes and his own life too, he cannot be my disciple. Anyone who does not carry his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.

‘And indeed, which of you here, intending to build a tower, would not first sit down and work out the cost to see if he had enough to complete it? Otherwise, if he laid the foundation and then found himself unable to finish the work, the onlookers would all start making fun of him and saying, “Here is a man who started to build and was unable to finish.” Or again, what king marching to war against another king would not first sit down and consider whether with ten thousand men he could stand up to the other who advanced against him with twenty thousand? If not, then while the other king was still a long way off, he would send envoys to sue for peace. So in the same way, none of you can be my disciple unless he gives up all his possessions.’
