UnlIkElY PArTnErs JoIn ForCEs To lAUnCh nEw VEnTUrEThe Carlson Executive MBA Program brings together innovators from a variety of backgrounds to challenge and learn from one another. students quickly discover that when a diverse group of leaders with a depth of industry experience gather in the classroom, amazing things happen.

when Kurt Waltenbaugh and Won Chung first met in the Carlson Executive MBA Program, they were set on seemingly diverging career paths: waltenbaugh was an established entrepreneur and Chung was a physician. But the pair connected and combined their disparate expertise to launch Carrot health: A start-up that derives actionable customer insights from both clinical and consumer data to help healthcare providers and payers better engage with their patients based on their needs.

“won had abilities in the medical profession. his knowledge combined with my background from a start-up and data perspective was invaluable, and we were able to build the company together,” says waltenbaugh.

The co-founders agree the venture’s success is due, in large part, to the network they formed at the Carlson school, which has helped them grow their business. Most recently, waltenbaugh reached out to a former classmate to get answers to a human resources challenge he faced, and she offered actionable advice.

“For two years, you’re with this diverse group from different backgrounds and professions who get to know each other so well. You develop a relationship that carries you beyond the four walls of the school,” says Chung.

Today, Carrot health is moving fast with a larger team, landing key clients, and expanding nationwide.

disCovEringapassionforEntrEprEnEurshipWith more than a decade of experience in corporate responsibility on his resume, tomme Beevas started the Carlson Executive MBA Program at a turning point in his career: It was time to get the skills to advance to the next level at Cargill, or find his professional niche elsewhere.

“As director of community involvement, the only territory I had yet to cover was to become a VP or do corporate responsibility at another company,” he explains. “I decided to get my MBA because I wanted to explore other business opportunities.”

As he considered schools, Beevas’ top priority was to join a program where he could connect with leaders from a variety of industries—and the Carlson school offered access to lawyers, doctors, executives, hr leaders, and more.

“within no time at all, each person was able to find their niche and build relationships. Culturally it was like nothing I had ever experienced. You have such great business leaders you can bounce ideas off,” he says. “Meeting people from other backgrounds gave me a better sense of what was out there. It gave me greater insights and more opportunities.”

As he progressed through the program, Beevas became increasingly curious about entrepreneurship. he started channeling lessons from his classes to realize a long-held business idea, and ultimately launched Pimento Jamaican kitchen. he started small; towing his grill to community events and serving free

samples of food prepared from his grandmother Babylou’s time-tested recipes. his Carlson school classmates often volunteered to help him serve food. Pimento quickly built a grassroots following.

one year later, the Food network discovered Pimento and cast Beevas to appear on the reality TV show Food Court Wars. he won the competition, resigned from his position at Cargill, and opened his first restaurant.

while it wasn’t easy to retire from a corporate career that he loved, Beevas doesn’t regret the move.

diners can now find Pimento at events throughout Minnesota, at the flagship location in Burnsville, and at the newest restaurant in Minneapolis. As the business grows, Beevas is employing principles he learned from his professors to ensure he scales up without sacrificing quality or service.

“our goal is to take Pimento national, if not global. Thanks to Carlson, I’ve sharpened my business acumen and now I’m able to apply that to being smart in how fast we grow,” he says.

At his Carlson Executive MBA Class of 2011 reunion this year, Beevas showed the classmates who helped him serve free food years prior that he’d achieved his goal.

“one of my proudest moments was being able to hang out with my cohort and for them to come see how my dream happened five years later,” he says.

The Carlson school network is composed of more than

55,000 alumni in 100 countries around the world. Backed by the prestige that a Carlson MBA carries, graduates are well-positioned to compete for new global opportunities. From Minneapolis and new York City, to london and Tokyo and beyond, invest in a degree that travels wherever your career may take you.

Corey Walther, ’11 CEMBA, is head of business development & distribution relationship management of Allianz life Financial services—a financial services provider based in Minneapolis and a part of Allianz sE which is headquartered in germany with operations in more than 70 countries worldwide. he enrolled in the Carlson Executive MBA Program to stay ahead of emerging challenges and seize new opportunities in the increasingly global industry.

“looking ahead to the future, I saw our business was continuing to change,” says walther, who was a senior vice president when he began the program. “After being at Allianz for over 10 years in a variety of leadership roles, I was concerned executives at Allianz may not view me as being equipped to tackle the next set of challenges coming our way. Completing my MBA at Carlson did exactly what I needed it to: It changed their perception of what I was capable of.”

Today, he heads a distribution and sales division that’s responsible for upwards of $4 billion in annual sales. The Carlson Executive MBA provided the knowledge he needed to work effectively with executives in marketing, hr, and other areas of business where he lacked direct experience.

“having the MBA experience behind me gave me the confidence to move into a role that was much broader and encompassed all of the other aspects of the business,” he says. “Beyond the academic perspective, learning alongside leaders from different industries enhanced the experience and really exceeded my expectations.”

Although he graduated several years ago, walther continues to sharpen his business expertise: he frequently taps the Carlson school alumni network to learn about forthcoming trends and address challenges at work. he has connected with fellow alumni from Unitedhealth group, Medtronic, and other leading companies from the rich Twin Cities business community and beyond.

“we’re always in a state of learning in business, and the landscape is constantly evolving. I stay connected to the school because I want to keep in touch with that outside perspective and share best practices,” says walther.

he’s also confident he could leverage that global network to pursue new career opportunities in the future, no matter where his aspirations lead.

“should I want to go out and pursue opportunities in the open marketplace, the global reputation of the Carlson school gives me a lot more credibility,” he says.

ExECutivEmBainspirEsalumtoJustdoitAs he embarked on his MBA journey, Tanner Johnson didn’t have a dream job in mind. he’d built a career in accounting, working for PwC, U.s. Bank, and Target, but was ready to expand his career opportunities. he joined the Carlson Executive MBA Program in 2013 to learn how to view and optimize businesses beyond the balance sheet.

“For me, it was less about the dream job and more about unleashing my potential,” he says. “The program allowed me to explore various career options and become better-rounded than just being the accountant at the organization—it was all about strategy.”

soon after graduation, a dream job fell into his lap. As he explored offers from two leading retail companies, Johnson was also courted by nike to lead the finance team. The opportunity was a perfect fit.

“There were a few things I was looking for: An organization focused on innovation, growth, and brand. nike reached out, and fit the three criteria. They wanted me as much as I wanted them, and it all worked out for the best,” he says.

gETTIng In ThE gAMEThe Carlson school alum accepted the position,

and put lessons from his classes into practice right away. day-to-day, he leverages his training in international business to embrace the global nature of the brand.

“The market of sportswear is growing internationally, and global operations allow us to reach the growth we at nike aspire to. we’re a $30 billion company now, and by 2020 we’re aiming to be at $50 billion. That’s substantial growth, and it’s not all going to be in the United states,” he says.

The Carlson Executive MBA Virtual Team Project prepared him to overcome the challenges inherent in global business. The project pairs students in Minneapolis with Executive MBA students in China and Austria to address a real-world business challenge. The process challenges

the participants to navigate cultural and regulatory barriers to develop an international business plan.

“The project allowed me to understand the different cultures and equip me for the position I’m in now, working heavily with our Asia division,” he says.

ForgIng TEAM ChEMIsTrYTo his surprise, Johnson discovered he learned

as much from his classmates as he did from his professors. The Carlson school selects highly experienced professionals representing a variety of industries for each incoming Executive MBA class. These students proceed through the program in a dedicated cohort, allowing them to engage one another and expand their professional networks.

“I had a wonderful cohort of individuals with experiences I could tap into, and you can’t put a value on that. I was able to learn so much from them,” says Johnson.

he gained a new understanding of how different industries approached challenges, and relied on his classmates for career advice. From medical device executives and salespeople, to CEos, there was a wide range of backgrounds represented in the classroom.

AChIEVIng lEAdErshIP PoTEnTIAlPerhaps most importantly, the Executive

MBA Program gave Johnson the fundamental tools to become a transformational leader. From orientation through graduation, leadership coaching is woven into every aspect of the experience. he identified his inherent leadership strengths, exceeded his development goals, and graduated from the program well-prepared to continue striving toward his full potential.

“The program equips you to finish out the rest of your career and continue to build on the great foundation that the CEMBA program sets for you,” he says. “In leading my team, I want to help develop the next CFo for nike.”

I want to take an untraditional path to get there and the Carlson school has equipped me with the capabilities to take that untraditional path.
