DearNeighboursHello again,

It seems a long time since the lastChristmas Directory, but here I amback again, with an all new, all shinyCarleton Directory. It was thanks to allyour messages of support that thosenice people at AQA Magazines decidedto step in at a time of difficulty andsave the Directories. I can’t state howgrateful I am for all cards, phone calls, letters and emails I received and it wasgreat to see how well liked theDirectories were.

Emma is now in charge of all advertis-ing...and yours truly retains theEditorship. A major change you willalready have noticed is the new A4 for-mat, the Directory will also now be abi-monthly magazine with a host ofnew features which you can getinvolved with. . .

FRONT COVER – Why not send inyour local photographs—somethingreally interesting locally please!

WHO’S WHO – See page 11.

WHAT’S ON – your events?

Indeed, if you wish to donate or submita short article on any useful local-interest topic or event, please continueto send these, preferably by email to:

[email protected]

Due to popular demand for continuitythere was a real hurry to get the newedition out, however that has not pre-vented them from containing the usualmix of local business, competitions, bus time tables, councillors’ newslet-ters and useful information.

If you are a local business and you wishto advertise in the next edition pleasecontact Emma to discuss various typesof advertising and promotion; she canhelp you get the most from your mar-keting budget. Emma is contactableeither at: [email protected] on 01228 592942 or 0797 27 189 31

As always;

Best wishes, Claire x

Car SharingYou can list your destination and timing along with your contactdetails; send to [email protected]

Statistically it has been shown thatover half of car drivers would share acar to work if they knew someone suit-able to travel with. So what can we do?

Today on the roads:

Traffic has increased by over60% since 1980.

Cars are the biggest source ofgreenhouse gas emissions.

Congestion costs the UK £19 bil-lion a year.

Public transport costs are rising.

With 10 million empty seats on theroad every year and so many of ustravelling in the same direction wethought perhaps some of you wouldlike to share some costs.

The benefits of car sharing are great!

These are many reasons to car share;reduced costs, reduced congestion andpollution and improved access in areaswith limited public transport. Indeed ifaverage car occupancy was to increaseby 10% - with 1.74 persons per car onaverage - this would reduce traffic onour roads by 9%.

Are there any other community carsharing schemes?

One successful group is the “RustyVehicle Sharing Group” which beganas far back as 1976 in Leicester. Agroup of neighbours originally decidedthat they could share a rusty vehicle. However, today the cars are of a muchbetter quality and the group has gonefrom strength to strength.

If you are interested in possiblyarranging a car share or are looking tofind one of those 10 million emptyseats this magazine will be opening itspages to you!

It seems unfair thatthose who put their

bodies through tor-turous pastimes forpleasure can sailalong with no morethan a need to sleepand eat more and canbounce back frominjury whilst thosewho lead gentle, sedate lives can befloored by a simpledaily task withoutwarning. Perhapsthat is the very point.

Personally I have noproblem acceptingheavy legs the dayafter a particularlygood bike ride. Mostsports come with theinevitable risk ofinjury with cycling noexception but therewards outweigh therisk. Expecting theodd spill comes withthe game. With hind-sight avoiding icyroads and large hedgecuttings could haveprevented many of myresident aches. Participating in sportis probably one of the few remainingactivities where the person is allowedto perform their own risk assessment.I love that release and loath the anx-ious society we are heading towards.

I’m certain that the body rather likeshaving something to do. Without achallenge the smaller stabilising mus-cles simply drift off and become dor-mant. It is perhaps little wonder thenthat if we perform a task day in day outand do little else at some point thebody will rebel. We constantly reachforward but do we bend back? I cananswer for the majority and say ‘no’.

Over the many years of teachingPilates, now entering into the tenth, Ihave taken an enormous dollop of hap-piness when a real difference is madeto someone who has taken it uponthemselves to reach out for help. Our

backs are fantastically made until weget at them. Made up of 22 pieces ofvarying sizes and cushioned by shockabsorbers we take them very much forgranted and we shouldn’t.

In my experience an event will triggera slight niggle that generally disap-pears over a day or two. Our memo-ries then fade and normal daily habitsreturn and therein the problembegins. That little niggle may changethe way we hold our posture. Tobegin with in such a small way it maybe barely noticeable. Over time weadapt and cease to use many of thosestabilising muscles.

Our bodies are wonderful machinesbut they do need to be kept in finetune. When everything works in syncwe can control small aches and pains. What is more we can find them before

they manifest into something muchmore unnecessary. Prevention is veryoften the cure.

We all, regardless of age and fitness, need some degree of fine tuning.Pilates is like no other form of move-ment. It helps everybody. One of thethings it does time and time again isgive confidence in those who have feltso rotten they have lost sight of how itfeels to ‘move’ with any degree of ease.

An hour of being strengthened, lengthened and loosened is such atonic that bottled it would be worth afortune.

Hello Again,

We are pleased to be back again support-ing the new Carleton Directory.

Removal of Kissing Gate atParklands Avenue — Imminent

Following enquiries, we have beenadvised by the developer, that this willbe done within two weeks. The rea-son for the delay has been due to legalprocedures.

We are aware that there are residentswho regularly use the gate to getaccess to the fields beyond and under-standably, they regret the decision toremove it. Alternative access to thelane via the gate on CumwhintonDrive, is just a few minutes walk.

Planning Brief for GarlandsHospital

The NHS Foundation Trust as part of itsbusiness plan have identified land offCumwhinton Drive as surplus to require-ments.

They commissioned architects/townplanners to identify sites and propose ascheme in accordance with therecently adopted 10-year Local Plan, where potential development atCarleton Clinic is specifically mentioned.

The proposals will follow the normalprocedure and in due course willcome forward as a formal planningapplication with the opportunity ofpublic consultation. Briefly, the reportidentifies three sites;

Site A: Beech Lodge /Burnamwood(14 dwellings)

Site B: Pine Lodge/ Inglewood(15 dwellings)

Site C: The Coppice/ Cumberland &Westmorland House area.(126 dwellings).

No current proposals for Field D, tothe Motorway, except for a bund possiblyjoining with the existing one to deal withtraffic noise. Field E, to CumwhintonRd, no current proposals.

The three large Victorian buildings tobe converted as in the previousschemes, and the trees will remain afeature of the development. Potentialtraffic issues for local road network areidentified.

This can be seen on www.carlisle.gov.ukunder Committee meetings, Infra-structure Overview & Scrutiny of 26thFeb Item A6.

In our next Focus we hope to be able toupdate you as it progresses.

Adoption of Roads in theEstates.

This issue is often raised with us. Wecontacted Capita who advise us that theestates built by Barratts andPersimmon are about to be adopted, when the snagging is complete. TheStory estates are not yet in ‘mainte-nance’ which eventually leads to adop-tion. There is some major sewer reme-dial work to be done.

Hello everyone,

It is so good to be back in the CarletonDirectory and writing to you all.

Hearty congratulations to Claire andKieran who have been quite remark-able and managed to restore the maga-zines to the area very quickly indeed.Well done to you both for being braveenough to keep going, good on ya!

I must say when I got the distressingnews in January that the magazineswere no longer going to be produced, Iwas very upset for both of Claire andKieran and for the readers, who I knowvalue the Directories and the informa-tion regarding local businesses andlocal issues in our area. Running yourown business is a huge responsibilityand must be very challenging on a dailybasis. These are very difficult times weare living in, with a global economiccrisis showing no mercy to the majori-ty of people, as either employers or theemployed – not unless you happen tobe a high flyer in banking, for eitherNorthern Rock or HBOS for example, where of course you may be in line fora fat £12,500 per week pension for life,or even a nice little bonus payout, thank you very much – all this for poormanagement performance, high riskinvestments with other peoples money, total lack of consideration for the taxpayer, and sticking your head in thesand when the sudden realisation of itall comes home to roost!

During this time I was able to givemore thought about my own commu-nication styles within the ward andhow to improve upon it, so have nowinvested in a web site of my own. It isnot fully operational yet as it is beingbuilt up for me. Many folk across theward are on line and prefer to contactme via email so this seemed an obvioussolution to get the service organised.

Communicating across the ward issuch a vital part of frontline coun-selling and enabling different ways ofachieving this has got to be a priority.Of course, I know this doesn’t suiteveryone and I will continue to write asmuch as possible. I will advise of thenew web address in the next edition ofThe Carleton Directory, which is nowto be produced bi-monthly.

Much has happened since the lastpublication of the Carleton Directory.

In December 2008, planning permis-sion was granted for the erection of anew building, providing eight newlovely homes for people sufferingfrom Cerebral Palsy. There are twoother designated areas for new build-ings within the city, thus enabling allthe residents from Scalesceugh Hallto re-locate, which have also beenagreed by the local authority.

‘I know that you willmake them welcome’

It is anticipated that the new resi-dents will be moving to the area in2010, when the building is expectedto be complete. Scalesceugh Hall is nolonger a suitable residence and can-not continue to meet modern dayneeds of those living there. The resi-dents from the Hall are so looking for-ward to becoming part of the widercommunity and I know that you willmake them welcome when the timefinally arrives. I will be taking a keeninterest on any progress and will ofcourse keep you informed.

Thank you.District Councillor

"We just want to thank you for the amazing difference your process has made to the carpet in our lounge and dining room.

We left you to sort out the cleaning of the carpet & suite whilst we went off to do some shopping and have a meal. We returned early afternoon to find that the carpet was like new, the pile had recovered and we could walk with a spring in our step once again. Over an almost three year period of quite heavy traffic, the springiness had all but disappeared, we now walk on a cushion of air.

The fact that the carpet was dry, whereas when we had carpets cleaned before they had remained damp for some time, was really a revelation; it really looks and feels new.

The suite had suffered the rigours of five years including a house move and having our family living here for some time last year - that too is like a new suite.

We are very pleased with the courteous and efficient service and we will be having you return in the not too distant future to give the rest of the house the "Purely Dry Clean Treatment"

Peas Please"How luscious lies the pea

within the pod."Emily Dickinson

Last year my son picked his firstfresh pea pod and it definitely was-

n’t the last one that he was going topick that day!

It wasn’t just the enjoyment at thecrack of the fresh pod opening, and itwasn’t the discovery of several full bod-ied tempting peas to pick, nor was itthe satisfying pop as each one waseased from its comfortable bed. It wasthe revelation of the taste and that fan-tastic difference between freshly grownand shop-bought peas.

To me the taste brought back memo-ries of Summer days in my dad’s allot-ment, picking peas in the shade. Agood handful of pea pods later it wasdecided that 2009 would be the year ofthe Pea in our household.

Now with the added impetus of healthyliving and the credit crunch, growingyour own seems the natural thing to do.

Probably the trickiest thing in Carlisleis to try and find a nice sunny part ofthe garden to grow your harvest. However, luckily peas can handle someof the partial shade we have come toexpect.

...that fantastic differencebetween freshly grown

and shop-bought peas...

Sowing should be done anywherebetween March and June with thewaiting time to your first luscious peabeing only 12 weeks away.

Whilst it is possible to sow directly, youcan take the indoor option and usepeat pots or some wet kitchen toweland a windowsill to start them off. Itreally is that simple, however you mustremember that whether sowing director planting your seedlings, pea rootsare likely to grow deep. It is best to givethem about an inch of depth with twoinches of space. Bonemeal is an addedbonus at this point and it means yourlittle harvest will need no more feeding.

Handy Hint – Soak pea seeds in a lit-tle water for a few hours before sowing

With 15 days before your seedlingsappear you must remember that juicypeas need moisture, and they shouldbe constantly watered if conditionsbecome dry. As your beloved plantsnow begin to grow they may be reach-ing out for a little support. This is bestgiven in the form of canes, and if youfeel they need a little extra perhapsconsider some netting.

Handy Hint – Look like a profes-sional gardener and pinch out theplants when they reach the top, thisencourages healthy lower growth.

Luckily for my son peas are at therebest when immature, for him thismeans he won’t have to wait too longafter first spying the growing pods.Picking early also encourages theplant to produce even more juicygoods. Selecting from the bottomupwards is also recommended asthese peas are the ones which areready first.

Handy Hint – To keep that freshtaste, pick just before cooking as peaswill quickly gain that unwanted shopbought taste once harvested.

Finally, remember to enjoy them, whether fresh from the pod or freshlyblanched. You will taste no better, just ask my son!

yourhouseholdchores?

Police PageWelcome once again,

Well it’s great to be back involvedwith the magazine as I am sure

most of you will agree it’s been sadlymissed. I appreciate having the pageevery month, it’s my way of keepingyou up to date with the work we aredoing in and around the area.

Community Speedwatch Scheme

In my last issue I touched onSpeedwatch, well I am happy toannounce it is working very well. Wenow have several speed co-ordinatorsin place. The response to becomeinvolved was greatly appreciated and itjust shows that you are as passionateabout speeding as me. We currentlyhave 6 officers now at Welsh Roadpolice station trained in the radar gunand have frequently been employing itin several hot spot areas which you thecommunity have pointed out to us.The feedback last week which wereceived from the NeighbourhoodForum was very pleasing, however Imust stress that 70% of drivers who arebeing stopped regarding their mannerof driving are from the estate them-selves which I find extremely disap-pointing. I can only repeat what I saidin a press release recently that the“Education Now Stops andEnforcement begins”.

‘70% of drivers who arebeing stopped regardingtheir manner of driving

are from the estate’Often motorists who speed throughresidential neighbourhoods areunaware of the impact their actionshave on other road users or the dangerthey pose!

The SID device has also been re-installed on Garlands Road to alertdrivers of their speed. Please do notcomplain if you are stopped and finedas there have been plenty of warn-ings!

NEW ROLE

Just to make you aware that at theend of May 2009 I will be leaving tostart my training to become a PoliceOfficer, so should you have any issuesregarding anything please make con-tact with me now, so I can begin toinvestigate them? You will howeverhave a new PCSO in the area and allissues will be passed on. This will bea very emotional time for me as I havethoroughly enjoyed working on mypatch becoming involved with com-munity issues and especially mySpeedwatch campaign which beganrecently. Building relationships is amajor part of my role and I have metsome wonderful people along theway, I have to say it has been a pleas-

ure to serve you, but I am off toachieve a lifetime’s ambition and verymuch looking forward to it. I will keepyou updated regarding your newPCSO in further issues.

In this climate there is an upturn inpeople looking for good independentfinancial advice in respect of theirfinances.

One of the most important pieces ofadvice we give our clients is to startwith a ‘spring clean’ of their finances.

The most important part of any finan-cial planning is to draw up a budgetand closely look at all aspects ofmonthly expenditure... most peopleare very surprised when they see howtheir money gets spent each month.

You must earn more than you spend,as this is the single biggest threat toyour finances, and we suggest the fol-lowing categories to analyse yourspending:

• In your Home

• Insurance

• Eating & Drinking

• Motoring and Travel

• Card and Loan repayments

• Family & Childcare

• Savings & Investments

• Leisure

• Health & Beauty

• Clothes

• Education & Courses

• Big One Offs

• Odds & Sods

You should compare pricesfor utilities and food andensure that there is noexpenditure that youwould deem unnecessary.

Good ideas to improveyour situation:

• Sell an old thing forevery new one you buy -eBay... car boot sales...?

• Leave credit and debitcards at home – only takecash then you won’t betempted to overspend.

• Sleep on it – you oftendon’t want things as muchthe next day.

• Keep a list of your debtsin your wallet – you will bereminded every time youopen it!

• Accept help.

• Think of credit cards as debt cards– the banks money, not yours.

• Pay yourself pocket money - paybills and give yourself pocket money.

• Avoid shops then you can’t belured into spending money.

• Stick loose change in a savings jar– it soon adds up.

• Make your own at home – pizza, beer, etc.

• Use eBay to rent short term itemsat low cost.

• Have a ‘no-spend day.

• Organise nights-in for friends andfamily rather than going out.

• Don’t take the kids to the super-market - do your shopping online andyou will only buy what you need.

Many areas of expenditure can bereviewed by an IndependentFinancial Adviser and advice given onperhaps reducing mortgage pay-ments, life cover requirements,House and Contents Insurance, sav-ings schemes and pension payments. They can also help with potential taxplanning.

It is also important that you plan forthe future as we all hope to retiresome day and for most people theywould like to do this as early as possi-ble so planningneeds to start asearly you can.

The proposals will follow the normalprocedure and in due course willcome forward as a formal planningapplication with the opportunity ofpublic consultation. Briefly, the reportidentifies three sites;

As always;
