PASTOR’S PAGE

Greetings brothers and sisters in Christ!

How grateful we all can be that Christ dwells within us, among us, and guides us dai-ly. In this season of Lent, a time of reflection and repentance, we in the Christian church use the symbol of Ashes to recall who we are and whose we are.

On February 26th, we held our Ash Wednesday service which initiates the start of the Lenten season. The placing of ashes on the forehead or back of the hand symbolizes ashes to ashes, dust to dust, our charge to repent and believe the Gospel.

I know that for many people, the season and holiday they focus on is Easter. As a kid, that was a new hat for my Mom, a new dress for my sisters, and was also a time

of Easter egg hunts and a decorated basket with that green grassy looking stuff that lined the bottom of the Easter basket.

However, before we come to Easter, we think of Jesus on his journey to Jerusalem. Knowingly, Christ sets his face to his arrest, trial, beating, imprisonment, and then a tortuous death on the cross. And brothers and sisters in Christ, as part of Christ’s family, as his followers, the family connection is strong, because Christ died on your behalf. You. He died for you. What an act of grace and compassion that is for each

of us.

I invite you to keep one of the Lenten Inward and Outward bulletin inserts to this sea-son nearby. They were found in the Ash Wednesday service, in our March 1 bulle-tins, and available in the office and Narthex as well.

How is Christ calling you to repent? Remember to reflect on how your life might be lived out more fully for our Lord this year.

We have much to be grateful for. As we journey to the cross with Christ, let us be mindful of the great gift that we have been offered, and hopefully, have willingly re-ceived.

Shalom,

Pastor Jerry

A VIEW FROM THE PEW Our church has a rich history that has been documented by our award-winning church historian, Elaine Raffety, who, along with many others, has maintained an archive of his-torical materials. Recently she shared material with me so we can understand some of our past to help us forge a pro-ductive future. Our church started as Sunday School in homes during the early 1800s, probably by John McMahon. At some point, classes were held in the schoolhouse on the Detchon farm. The township’s population around this time was 800-900. In 1871, Sheldon Newton wrote about township life from the time of his arrival here as a child in 1811. Thomas Agnew arrived in the township in 1824 along with others including the Detchons, Moodys, Davidsons, and Clarks. Women also played an important part in the history of our church both individually and collectively. The first church building for the Boardman Methodist Epis-copal Church was built in 1844 on Market Street just south of what is now 224. When we celebrated our 175th anni-versary, Charles Carl made a model of that first church. This model currently resides in our church archives and the Cornerstone of that church, which rested for many years in Elbert Agnew’s barn, is now in our courtyard. The church stood adjacent to the Town Hall which was con-structed in 1856 as a Disciple Church but was sold to the township in 1858. The building was freely used by our con-gregation for Sunday School classes and other gatherings. Importantly, it contained stoves the ladies could use to pre-pare church suppers. Clarence Smith remembers classes around the pot-bellied stove. In 1933, the Town Hall was condemned as a place for pub-lic meetings, so plans were made to bring the building up to code. Because of a $5,000.00 bequest from Isabella Swanston’s estate, the needed changes were made. The caveat was that the ladies would equip the stoves so that no one else could use them without their consent and the church would pay for all gas used. During the depression, the ladies of the church kept the church going financially, largely through the use of those stoves. Miss Ruth Duncan, believed to have been a Boardman School teacher, was the treasurer during those years and she made personal contri-butions to the church treasury so they could end the year in the black. One year the ledger showed a balance of $1.03. At a board meeting, one gentleman stated that no note had been given to Miss Duncan for the $300.00 she had contrib-uted, so one was issued. Miss Duncan said that every year they managed to end in the black she would forgive $50.00. Although the women of the church were driving forces, the Board of Trustees at times made decisions that impeded their work. At one point, Charlotte Brown suggested that there should be at least one woman on the Board of Trus-tees, and women still make significant contributions today. Next month, I will report on the history of the church build-ing in which we now meet. In His Name, Dennis Henneman

The book chosen is THE NEXT PER-SON YOU MEET IN HEAVEN: THE SEQUEL TO THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN by Mitch Albom. “It tells the story of Eddie’s heavenly reunion with Annie—the little girl he saved on earth—in an unforgettable novel of how our lives and losses intersect" (Amazon review). We have two copies of the book in our church library, and there are multiple copies available through the public libraries. Call the library, or go in person to ask them to order the book from another branch, and it will be delivered to the library you frequent. EXCITING UMW READING PROGRAM BOOKS AVAILABLE IN THE CHURCH LIBRARY Are you looking for books to inspire you and even give you a special time during Lent to deepen your faith? The books listed below will certainly accomplish this goal. Each one offers clear stories and examples to demonstrate how we can put our faith into action. For the women who wish to take part in the UMW Reading Program, you only need to read 5 books before Dec. 31 2020. Ask Mary Lou Henneman for more information. The books are available for all members of our church to read. Check out the bulletin board and the special bookcase in our church library. HOW THE WOMAN AT THE WELL BECAME THE WELL WOMAN by Donna Rhodes (2020 Nurturing for Community) “This is a poignant memoir of a woman’s desperate journey to find love. Inspired by the biblical account of the woman at the well, this remarkable testament to God’s faithfulness and the power of God’s redemption is transformative for those who are afraid to hope again.” PRACTICING RESURRECTION: THE GOSPEL OF MARK AND RADICAL DISCIPLESHIP by Janet Wolf (2020 Spir-itual Growth) BONUS BOOK: COUNTS AS 2 BOOKS “This well-known gospel is presented through voices and experiences that are often relegated to the margins. Where do we

stand, what do we see, whom we listen to or dismiss shape the way we understand the world and the Bible. This study incorpo-rates the stories of those on the margins to uncover how the gospel is alive and well today—how God is, and always has been, calling us to live out the Word in a radical way.” WHICH WAY LORD? EXPLORING YOUR LIFE’S PURPOSE IN THE JOURNEYS OF PAUL by Rob Fuquay (2020 Leadership Development) LARGE PRINT “As Christians, we hunger to live out God’s purpose for our lives. But how do we know we are moving in the right direction? This book will help you understand God’s desire for life by unpacking your experiences alongside those of the apostle Paul.”
