Greetings fellow Chapter Members:

Our November Fall Seminar was a great success. We had 225 in attendance. Although we have had more in attendance in previ-ous years, this is a great number after you considering the cur-rent economic and political situation, as well as AGA members entering retirement. At this point, I now understand what is in-volved in putting together a great program like this. It is defi-nitely the hard work and dedication of the committee members who have volunteered their time to make the Fall Seminar a suc-

cess. I would like to thank everyone who involved themselves in organizing the Fall Seminar, the speakers who gave presentations, as well as those who took their time to attend the seminar. Also, I would like to encourage everyone to make plans to attend the luncheon held on December 1, 2011 and the GAAF Conference in Bir-mingham on December 7-8, 2011. We hope to see you at these events.

As stated in the last newsletter, National AGA has implemented some necessary changes to the Sectional Leadership Meeting program. In the past, each chapter President selected which members would attend this meeting. Beginning in 2012, invited attendees from the chapters will include the Incoming Chapter President, Incoming Membership or Early Career Chair, Incoming Education Chair, Incoming CGFM Chair and Incoming Accountability Chair. ―Incoming‖ refers to officers who are currently elects and will be taking office on July 1, 2012. The National AGA has stated that no substitutions will be permitted for these positions but they will cover airfare, hotel, and all meals provided during the meeting. The region has just an-nounced where this meeting will occur and I am envious. The Sectional Leadership Meeting for the 2012 year will be held on May 18—19, 2011 at Planet Hollywood Re-sort in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pam Henderson, our Incoming Chapter President, will need volunteers to fill these positions as well as other positions on the CEC. Now that you know where the training will occur, what are you waiting on? If you are in-terested in serving or learning more about a position, feel free to contact me or any-one currently serving on the CEC. Our contact information is always at the back of each newsletter. Time: 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. November 2, 2011-December 14, 2011

Exam 1 has been approved for one hour for each session

attended. An official certificate will be awarded at the end of the session. Instructor's Note: The credit to be granted for service as a lecturer, instructor or discussion leader of an acceptable program will be equal to twice the number of actual hours of the lecturer or session. However, no additional credit will be allowed for repetition of a program - Section 30-X-5-.03 (d).

When people who are interested in the CGFM designation call the AGA national office, some of the most common questions center around the process of obtaining the CGFM designation: Where do I start? What happens next? How do I purchase the exams? So, here is a step-by-step guide on how you can earn the CGFM desig-nation: Step 1- Applying for the CGFM Program— Submit an appli-cation form for the CGFM Program via internet, fax or mail. The application form is available on the AGA website. The application fee is $85, and you must also fax or mail proof of a bachelor's de-gree. Step 2 - Eligibility Letter— Once your application, payment and degree information are received and processed by the CGFM office staff, AGA will mail you an Eligibility Letter with instruc-tions on how to purchase your CGFM Examinations. Your eligibil-ity for taking the CGFM Examinations will expire in three years from the date your CGFM application was processed. Step 3 - Work Verification—Submit a Work Verification Form as soon as you have at least two years of professional-level experi-ence in the government financial management field. You do not have to submit this form before taking the examinations, but it must be filed before the designation can be granted. The Work Verification Form is available on the AGA website. Step 4 - Studying for Examinations—You have several op-tions: classroom courses for all three CGFM examinations, an online course for Examination 1, a study guide for examination 2 and a reading resources list. AGA is working on publishing study guides for Examinations 1 and 3, which should be available next year. Step 5 - Exam Purchase—Following the instructions on your Eligibility Letter, purchase CGFM examination(s) on the AGA website and print the Exam Authorization Letter. Examination fees are $109 for each of the three examinations. Step 6 - Taking the Exam—Follow the instructions on the Exam Authorization Letter to make a testing appointment at a Prometric Center near you. Show up at the testing center on your appointment date (be sure to read and follow the testing proce-dures described on the Exam Authorization Letter). Step 7 - Score Reporting- After you complete the examination at a Prometric Testing Center, you will immediately receive an unofficial pass/fail score on the computer. AGA will mail you an official score letter. If you did not pass your exam, there is a 30-day waiting period before you can repurchase and retake that ex-amination. If you fail the same exam more than once, the waiting period is 90 days. Step 8 - Award Letter—Once you pass all three CGFM exami-nations, and your Work Verification Form has been submitted to the CGFM Office, AGA will send you an award letter announcing your new CGFM designation. Step 9 - CGFM Certificate—Wait for your CGFM certificate to arrive in the mail (usually within 6-10 weeks of receiving the award letter).

An excellent source of additional information on the CGFM Program is the AGA national website - select "CGFM Certification" on the naviga-tional bar. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the CGFM Office at 1.800.AGA.7211, ext. 310 or 313.

Eight Healthy Ways to Deal with Holiday Stress

By: Jigsaw Health’s Research Staff

The holidays are a magical time. They can also carry with them a lot of stress for most people. There's the over-crowded shops, the over-booked calendar, the over-eating, over-spending, over-committing, over-drinking, and generally over-indulging that can put you over the

edge. Even seeing beloved family members can spark conflicting emotions and threaten the peace. In an effort to help you cope better and enjoy the season more, let's start by revealing that you're definitely not alone in this stressful balancing act. Consider these top holiday stressors from a 2004 survey by the American Psychological Association (APA):

Lack of money (61%)

Pressures of gift-giving (42%)

Lack of time (34%)

Credit card debt (23%)1

And that was in 2004! Obviously, there have been some major economic changes since then, and those percentages are likely higher than ever this year. But, the good news is that something else has also changed... and that would be our expectations. While this may not be as obvious as the change in the economy, you've probably found it to be true. So, keep that in mind this holiday season and just do the best you can. Dealing with Stress: Why is stress so overwhelming? In times of stress, adrenaline kicks into gear causing the adrenal glands to produce cortisol. Cortisol, the ―fight or flight" hormone, jumps into action, raising its levels to give your body the boost it needs to get through the stressful event. Then blood pressure rises, and glucose and fatty acids flood the bloodstream to provide the body with addi-tional fuel. Even blood platelets become stickier to help heal wounds that may occur in the ―fight or flight" response. When the stressor passes, the body returns to normal. But repeated or prolonged stress keeps the body in a constant state of ―fight or flight," pushing corti-sol, blood pressure, glucose, and fatty acid levels to an unhealthy high. Combine that with poor nutrition and difficult digestion — often the result of extended stress — and healthcare professionals agree that you may be setting yourself up for later age-related problems such as frailty, functional decline, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, inflammatory arthritis, type 2 diabetes, and cancers. So here are our 8 tips to help you avoid getting overwhelmed by stress this holiday season:

Eight Healthy Holiday Tips 1. See stress for what it is. Stress happens. Life happens. Viewing normal life events as uncontrollable, personal attacks ―wires" you to produce more and more cortisol, drive up your blood pressure, and jeopardize your health. But seeing normal life events as well, normal — enables your body to "come down" from stressful situations more quickly and stop the vicious stress cycle before it gets out of control.

2. Eat, drink, and be merry — within reason. The holidays are meant for celebration, not overindulgence. Use our holiday eating guide to make wise and healthy choices. Having some digestive enzymes handy could also be helpful to prevent indigestion from too many rich foods. 3. Exercise for your sanity's sake. When the stress seems overwhelming, take an exercise break. Just 30 minutes a day, a brisk walk, a run on the treadmill, or strength training gives you a powerful tool to fend off stress. Exercise not only helps you manage weight and is good for your body, but it can help you de-stress and clear your mind. And with a clear mind, you can make better decisions about what‘s good for you this holiday season. 4. Rein in the shopping. Instead of searching out the latest gadget or this year‘s ―must have" toy…stop: you don‘t have to add to the national debt or indulge everyone‘s whim. Limit your gift-giving to an important few. Stay home and shop on the Internet. Or go to the mall at the least busy times. Better yet, give the gift that everyone treasures: time. Plan a family vacation, treat friends to dinner, take a little one to a favorite museum. Memories are not found in things, but in the time you spend with those you care about most. 5. Give unto others. Smile at a stranger, donate food and clothing, help at the homeless shelter, wrap presents for children who would otherwise have none. Take the focus off yourself and put the spotlight on someone else. Caring for another bonds you to humanity in a way like no other and keeps your feet on the ground. 6. Get the attitude of gratitude. Make a list of everything you‘re grateful for and add to it every day. It doesn‘t have to be big, just meaningful. Holding a puppy, seeing a stellar sunset, giving someone a hand, keeping your sanity, just be thankful for the opportunity to live! 7. Make it real. Even though Hollywood and Madison Avenue might wish it to be so, Christmas is not about creating the perfect family holiday. It‘s about enjoying what‘s here and now. Keep expectations real, and don‘t try to solve long-simmering issues at the family dinner. Allow your gathering to have its own life, whatever that may be. 8. Take time for yourself. Taking care of yourself helps you to take better care of others in your life. Go for a long walk or take time out to read or listen to your favorite music. By slowing down you will actually have more energy to accomplish your goals. So resolve this holiday season to reduce and better manage your stress, and enjoy the holidays in good health and happiness!

Merry Christmas from Montgomery Chapter AGA!Merry Christmas from Montgomery Chapter AGA!Merry Christmas from Montgomery Chapter AGA!

Gingerbread men and icicles, snowballs and candy canes. Christmas trees and bicycles, and grandpa with his trains. Santa and his reindeer, momma in her nightgown. More presents will appear,

Church bells ringing, choirs joyful singing. Lights we are stringing, the mistletoe is swinging. Christmas time is upon us and blessings we all share. No one throws a fuss, as we say thanks with a prayer.
