Hello Fellow AGA Members and Friends!
Welcome to the November edition of the Capital City Focus. Guess what? The 27th Annual Fall Educational Training Conference
is just around the corner, and I hope you have registered to join us November 14th at the Marriott Legends in Prattville, AL. If
not, why? Maybe you need additional information to understand some of the changes this year. I thought you might, so I de-
cided to dedicate this month’s message to provide some details to put you at ease.
THE JOURNEY
I’m sure many of you are asking what is The Journey? No worries! You aren’t scheduled to run around the building on a scav-
enger hunt, nor will you need to crawl through a maze of any sort. The Journey is a virtual opportunity for our Young Pro-
fessionals (YPs) to document their experience of the conference. Many of them are first time attendees excited about net-
working with our seasoned financial members. The objective is for them to learn about the dos and don’ts of how you ad-
vanced during your career. If approached, we hope you will provide some advice to assist them on their career journey. By
the way, smile for the camera, you know YPs love technology.
THE SOCIAL
Immediately following the seminar, there will be a social event at the Cottage. The Cottage is on the property just a few foot-
steps away. We invite you to join us for light hors d'oeuvres, live music, and a cash bar. Plan to network and catch up with
old friends in a fun and relaxing environment. Community Service has arranged for a surprise guest to slide down the chimney
and take photos around the fireplace.
REVISIONS TO TH BYLAWS
It’s time to update the Chapter Bylaws. Members will have the opportunity to vote “YES” or “NO” to the changes at the
conference. The recommended modifications will be provided for preview on the Chapter’s website by Monday, November
10th. When you arrive at the conference, please visit the Bylaws table to receive your voting ballot and further instructions.
Ballots will be collected and tallied by mid-day and additional announcements will be made as needed.
If you are a current member of Montgomery AGA, and you will NOT be attending the conference but wish to vote, please
contact [email protected] for a ballot. Please help us expedite the process at the conference and review ahead of
time. If you have questions, contact [email protected]
COMMUNITY SERVICE – Sponsor a Senior for the Food Bank Drive

gram. Join one of the nine teams “Altruistic”, “Bountiful”, “Compassionate”, “Generous”, “Helpful”, “Humanitarian”,

8 CAMPUS AMBASSADORS EVENTS
Wow! Student Membership went on a college campus tour. First up,
Auburn University Montgomery on September 30th. YP Board Mem-
bers, Lindsay Miller and Tashantia Stewart along with Education Direc-
tor, Rachel Chou gave Dr. Kamnikar's governmental class the insight on
benefits of joining AGA, the importance of the CGFM, and possible job
opportunities within state government. "Once you finish this class, you
only need about two weeks to prepare for this section of the CGFM
exam. Dr. Kamnikar prepares you for the exam", said Rachel. But the
highlight of the night came from Lindsay, a proud mother of twins stat-
ing, "I'm affiliated with AGA, because I know that it can advance my ca-
reer...and if I can balance my education, motherhood, and the responsi-
bility I have in AGA, what's stopping you."
Next up was Alabama State University on October 7th. Dr. Thompson al-
lowed AGA YP to speak with his graduate accounting class. President-elect
Nakia Tetter and YP Board member Courtney Bruce inspired students with
their testimonies about completing the MAcc program. They further encour-
aged them to join AGA. What was initially a one-class presentation turned
into two classes and multiple students applied for membership in AGA.
Montgomery AGA, we asked and the students responded. Take them under
your wings and help them succeed with their future endeavors.
A few items that students at both campuses were interested in were:
CGFM review course-similarities to Becker.
Excel/Access (Microsoft) & accounting software tutorials
Governmental Accounting tutoring
Internships-a few expressed that they were not opposed to an UNPAID
internship if it gets their foot in the door.
Student Membership intends to be personally vested in all our student mem-
bers. Whether it be words of encouragement, mentoring, scholarships, tu-
toring, or job placement, we should all have a stake in our student members.
For those students who are still skeptical about what AGA can do for them,
we will work harder to prove that Montgomery AGA is totally worth their
investment.
Student Membership’s next stop is Troy University…….

SENIOR SUPPLEMENT PROGRAM
Want to make a difference in the life of a senior and represent your organization? Join
the Community Service Committee as we partner with the Montgomery Area Food
Bank’s Senior Supplement Program.
The Senior Supplement Program is a food box program for eligible individuals sixty
years of age and over. During the third week of each month (the time when
most food budgets are low or depleted), eligible seniors are provided a box of
groceries. There is no cost to the individuals served. The cost to sponsor and provide
an individual with this service is $100 per year. This provides a box of approximately
25-35 pounds of selected, highly nutritious food items, plus an additional Holiday Box,
to include turkey or ham, on both Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The Committee is challenging the Montgomery Chapter to sponsor at least 10 seniors ($1,000) through the Senior
Supplement Program. As friendly competition, we have nine teams (Altruistic, Bountiful, Compassionate, Gener-
ous, Helpful, Humanitarian, Philanthropic, Sincere, and Thoughtful) comprised of an average of 35 team mem-
bers, that will compete for bragging rights at our Fall conference. The team(s) with the most seniors sponsored will ap-
pear in our monthly newsletter in our “Humanitarian Wall of Giving” section.
Teams and team captains will be emailed in the next few days. This project will run from October 30th through November
30th. Donations can be made online, through your team captains, and at the Fall Conference. Make sure you represent
your team and your organization and “Help Feed Hope across Alabama”.

Meeting Called to Order: 11:55 a.m.
The CEC meeting of the officers and directors of the Montgomery, AL Chapter of the Association of Government Accountants
(AGA) was called to order President LaTaya Lucas. A quorum was present with the following officers and directors in attendance:
LaTaya Lucas Rachel Chou Margie Toney Keonna Ware
Nakia Tetter Carolyn Rhodes Carmen Leonard Renee Reese
Nicole Boswell Pamela Hill Emma Cole Kimwana Robinson
Webmaster: President Lucas asked that the AGA Montgomery Chapter website be updated with a new picture and to add a tab
for Education. She also stated that Career Opportunities and Resources needs a presence. Latreeka Williams will be assisting Alea
with the website.
Community Service: Terese Toby was absent, but sent her report via email to President Lucas, which mentioned information for
Toys for Tots and OITA. This information will be available at the October 10th luncheon. These projects will take place between
October and December 2014.
Mentorship: The application for mentorship has been approved and will be posted on the AGA Montgomery Chapter website. The
committee also received holiday tickets that will be awarded during the October 10th luncheon.
Accountability: Carmen Leonard presented a report for her committee. The report included: The Chapter Citizen Centric Re-
porting (CCR) was completed and submitted to National AGA for participation in the Certificate of Excellence in CCR; Copies of the
CCR will be provided at the Fall Training; We have not received feedback from the letters Angela Stokes sent to encourage entities
to complete a CCR; Angela will submit an article for the newsletter for November and December; We are currently working on a
CCR for the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs with assistance from Dixie Black; and Troy University will be competing in the
Undergraduate Case Challenge.
Audit: At this time, Gladys Gray was still working on information for this committee
Awards & Nomination: Carolyn Rhodes spoke regarding the holiday tickets as awards for the October 10th luncheon. The speak-
er will be presented a ceramic box in the shape of the State of Alabama. For the Fall Training, President Lucas wants to change the
way we do the drawings. She also stated that announcements can be made in the mornings and at lunch. Also, the committee needs
to set times for the speakers.
Meeting & Registration: At the time of this meeting, 72 people have registered for the Fall Training and 38 people for the Octo-
ber 10th luncheon. Walk-ins and late registration will be welcomed at the October 10th luncheon.
Education: Rachel Chou distributed the Fall Training Plan and Agenda. She suggested that a CEC member adopt an ambassador
and/or speaker and assist with their needs during the training. President Lucas suggested that Rachel create a folder for each speaker
with forms and travel information. There was discussion regarding the decision to distribute folders for those attending the training,
as it has been done in the past. Emma Cole stated that she was not printing new membership forms, but will correspond to those
seeking membership via email.
Minutes: The final copy of the minutes from the last CEC meeting is in the current newsletter. Kimwana Robinson mentioned that
she updated the minutes with names that were in attendance on the conference call. Renee´ Reese suggested that we table the
minutes until they have been clarified by Kimwana. Renee´ also found a couple of errors. President Lucas asked everyone to view
the content in the minutes. Once Kimwana makes corrections, the minutes will be submitted this week for votes. Kimwana also
suggested to the CEC Members and committees that if they have detailed reports to present to email them to Nicole Boswell prior
to the meetings, just to help her out with taking minutes.

CEC Board Meeting Minutes Continue
October 6, 2014
Treasurer’s Report: Jeannie Price was absent, but sent the financial report via email to President Lucas. No major changes were
needed. Just an indication by Emma Cole that Membership and Recruitment-MEM should be Office Supplies-Accountability. Margie
Toney motioned to accept the Financial Report. Renee´ seconded. The Financial Report was accepted by the CEC members.
Chapter Recognition Points: President Elect Nakia Tetter submitted the Chapter recognition points to National last week.
Montgomery Chapter’s goal is 19,501. As of October 6th, we have received 40.45 percent of our goal and 7,850 total points. This
includes 400 of 4,000 in Education, 725 of 4,000 in Certification, 3,100 of 3,000 in Communications, 2,725 of 4,000 in Membership,
600 of 2,000 in Accountability, and 300 of 2,000 in Community Service.
Bylaws & Procedures: Margie Toney viewed the bylaws with committee member Keona Ware. The Financial Secretary position
needs to be added. Margie also stated that National bylaws have a template, which they expect local chapters to follow. National has
made some changes to the bylaws and this will be a work in progress with Margie, President Lucas, and the committee. National now
refers to member “classes” as “categories”. Distribution of information electronically has been added to the bylaws. The changes to
the bylaws will be made and presented at the Fall Training. Margie also mentioned that the policies and procedures still need to be
developed and make changes.
CGFM: Pamela Hill announced that the study session for Exam 2 will start on Wednesday, October 8th. This information can be
found on the AGA Montgomery website.
Membership: Emma Cole presented a draft of the AGA membership website, which is awaiting approval from Troy University. For
AGA Student Ambassadors, we currently have one at AUM and one at Troy University. The committee is still working on student
ambassadors at Huntington and Faulkner. They are also working for one at Alabama State, where AGA will be speaking on October
7th. President-elect Tetter will be in attendance.
Emma also spoke about creating a database for students to promote membership. She emphasized how important it is for us to Job
Shadow, which will net AGA Montgomery huge Chapter Recognition points. She would like for one agency to participate in the fall,
and two in the spring. Emma also explained that it will be a group of students that will shadow the agency for about two hours, con-
cluding with lunch.
Administration: The committee needs to log into Star Chapter to make sure documents are up to date, especially CPEs.
Newsletter: The newsletters will be sent out around the time of the monthly luncheons. Pamela raised concerns because the dead-
line for input in the newsletter will now have a shorter turnaround. President Lucas indicated the committee does not have enough
people. We are in the process of losing Tameka Cooper, which will only leave two committee members. We will work with the
newsletter committee, and make changes where required.
Comments/Announcements: The first Lecture Series at Troy University was a great success. Emma and Rachel thanked those
that could participate. Rachel stated that 100 percent enjoyed themselves, and 95 percent of thanks go to Emma for her hard work.
Meeting adjourned: 1:07 p.m.
(The minutes are not approved by means of a vote at the time of publishing.)
