To the editor... Through your paper I would like to let your readers know that Billican Productions Inc is in rehearsals again. It is over a year since our last production but many of our favourite actors, plus some new ones are underway, getting ready to perform starting 22nd May. Those returning to the stage are Robert Byrnes, Paul Breen, Marie Starr, Kelly Smith and Don Caldwell, along with newcomers Matthew Ryan, Erin Cottan, Di Ebdon, Kyle Wallace, Sonia Wheatly and Emily McTaggert. Over the past twelve months Billican has struggled to come up with a cast, but this time we have been successful and “Wild Goose Chase” will be performed at the Billimari Hall on the 22nd, 24th, 26th, 28th, 29th and 31st of May. Over the 36 years that Billican has been running many local charity groups have gained support from our profits, and once again we will look forward to working with organisa-tions who are prepared to work with us in the morning, setting tables and helping with the vegetables and then in the evenings helping with serving and washing up. If you have a group willing to work with Billican members on the above dates, could you please write to our secretary on the address below. A special thank you to the cast members who have nominated to give up their time to perform. This will enable us to once again help local charities. We look forward to presenting a meal and play in May, and we ask your readers to watch the paper for further information. Thank you for your assistance. Yours faithfully Nina Kallas (on behalf of Billican Productions Inc)

Councillor’s Comment... Cr Anthony Durkin would like to thank the Bendy Street Group for their successful funding submission for new play equipment due to arrive this week at Memorial Park. Thanks also to Cabonne Council staff and the Bendy Street Group for organising the successful relocation of the old play equipment to the Sports Ground.

Reminder... 2010 Waste to Art Due at Council 17 March for judging and opening night 19 March.

CHS WESTERN AREA SWIMMING On Wednesday 24, 17 swimmers from Canowindra High School competed at the Western Area trials at Cowra. Some new unannounced rules implemented this year had a few of our boys a little concerned. The ruling stated that no swimmer can compete with more than one layer of swim wear. (Keep the foot-ball shorts in the footy bag boys!) Well done to all competitors for trying their hardest and not missing any events. Students going to state for achieving third or higher are:

Rowena Cartwright 100m Butterfly Amy Wythes 50m Freestyle Hannah Roth 100m Breastroke Peta Edwards 200m Freestyle Gerard Eppelstun 100m Backstroke Girls Medley relay team: H Roth, M Vitnell, R Cartwright, A Smith Boys 14 yrs relay team: A Willson, B Cain, R Hughes, T Middleton Open girls relay team: R Cartwright, P Edwards, A Smith, A Wythes

COLOURS OF CENTRAL AUSTRALIA The Molong Branch of the Australian Red Cross will be presenting an exhibition of photographic art by Bill Marriott. This will be held in the historic Molong Coachhouse on Friday 19th March 2010 from 7pm. This will be the second year Bill Marriott has created and donated an exhibition in support of Red Cross. This exhibition is a result Bill’s recent trip to Central Australia and shows the magnificent colours and scenery of that area. All the artworks are for sale, as are catalogues displaying the whole collection. All proceeds of the event go to the Australian Red Cross. A Spokesperson from the Molong Branch said, “Our members are an enthusiastic, hardworking team. We put a lot of effort into supporting the valuable work of the Australian Red Cross, which seeks to improve the lives of vulnerable people in Australia and internationally through the power of humanity. Last year Molong Branch of the Australian Red Cross raised almost $15,000 for this worthwhile organization.” “We encourage everyone to come and admire this exhibition, enjoy an evening in the historic Molong Coachhouse (on the corner of Bank & Gidley Streets), and help support the fundraising efforts of the Molong Branch of the Australian Red Cross.” Last year’s exhibition was a great success as a fund raiser as well as a social function. It is hoped that this year will also be very successful. Tickets are $10 and are available from members of the Molong Branch of Red Cross. Savouries and wine will be served. For more information please contact Jenny Maxey on 02 63668840 or Rhoma Hale on 02 63668414

FARMERS RALLY SENDS MESSAGE TO GOVERNMENT

The rally by farmers last Wednesday at Parliament House in protest at the loss of their rights over freehold land in NSW is just the first step in an ongoing protest, Member for Dubbo, Dawn Fardell, said last week. More than 300 farmers gathered outside Parliament House in Sydney to protest at the State Government’s “heavy handed” approach to native vegetation laws which, farmers claim, has removed their basic rights under freehold ownership laws. “I spoke to a number of farmers from around the State, including Forbes, Gunnedah and the State’s west who all made the trip to Parliament House to fight for their rights,” Ms Fardell said. “They have had enough of the State Government’s dictatorial approach to land management laws, which have resulted in many farmers going broke and family break-ups. “I didn’t see one Government representative at the rally which was extremely disappointing,” Ms Fardell said.

ENTRIES OPEN FOR TOP FARMING AWARD Applications are now open for the 2010 NSW Farmer of the Year and Young Farmer of the Year Awards, with prize money of up to $10,000 up for grabs. NSW Farmers’ Association President, Charles Armstrong and Minister for Primary Industries, Steve Whan, are encouraging all farmers to throw their hats in the ring. Minister Whan says the annual awards recognise excellence in agriculture through new and innovative management approaches and sustainable and profitable farming management skills. “There are many challenges facing farmers across the State, yet they remain resilient, determined and adaptable – three qualities highly valued by the Farmer of the Year judges,” Minister Whan said. “Our judges know all too well how tough this drought has been, not to mention issues such as climate variability, water scarcity and even floods, so they are looking for farmers that have put the best strategies in place.” NSW Farmers Association President Charles Armstrong said the Awards finalists play an important part in promoting the sector and educating urban audiences about farmer’s contributions on many levels. “As land managers, the environmental and innovation credentials of farmers are sometimes overlooked, so we want farmers that can share their approaches with their industry peers, and also act as ambassadors to the broader community,” he said. The Awards are an initiative of the NSW Farmers’ Association and Industry & Investment NSW, with support from The Land and the Royal Agricultural Society of NSW. The Young Farmer of the Year Award is open to farmers aged 16-35 years, while the Farmer of the Year Award is open to all farmers aged over 35 years. The Young Farmer receives $5,000, and the Farmer of the Year wins $10,000. Application forms are available at www.nswfarmers.org.au or at www.industry.nsw.gov.au, and entries close Thursday 10 June.

Swimming Club Report Swimming Club had times tumbling everywhere as swimmers enjoyed the fine weather, if not the mozzies that descend after dark. Leading the way in the spoon heats was Ellie Giger who smashed her time by 6 seconds and swam herself out of the semis. Also out of the semis were Alex Flannery, Hudson Izzard and Amelia Hickman who swam 3 seconds faster than their PBs. Angus Fisher, Charlotte Balcomb and Harry Jeffrey lowered their times by 2 seconds while Kylie Dunn, Kevin Beath and Stewart Russell all took a second from their times. Charlotte Balcomb, Finbar Smyth and Xavier Lynch all lowered their times by a second in the semis but it was Xavier who progressed to the final from that heat. Xavier started the final like a speed boat but the other five swimmers gradually caught up and it finished up a race between lane 4 and 6. Josh Middleton was six hundredths of a second behind Erica Blanch who took out the spoon with a personal best time of 23 seconds. Well done to all finalists. Presentation Night is on Friday 26 March at the usual time but it is preceded by swimming club’s AGM. There are some positions that are vacant this year as the incumbents have done their two years in that position. Please consider taking on a position as if every-one does a bit the load is spread around and swimming clubs runs smoothly each week. Have a think about it before 26 March.

Under 16s Cricket Report The Under 16s learnt this week the truth of the saying that ‘catches win matches’ as dropped catches allowed Grenfell to get away and win 102-93. Matt McLean made 22, Blake Willson 14 while Kain Earsman and Connor Bennett both made 9 for a total of 93. Canowindra had Grenfell 1/6 in the first over but dropped catches allowed Luke Schneider to retire on 22 and give Grenfell the momentum. A late order flurry by Charlie Keough got Grenfell over the line thanks to his 26 which included 2 sixes. This week the 16s play Lachlan Fertilizers at the Oval.
