The Open Boys Basketball Team had a long trip to undertake to compete in the Round of 16 in the NSW
Combined High Schools Basketball Championships. A bus ride, a flight, a night’s accommodation and
another bus ride took them to Lismore, to take on a strong Rivers College team.
A very slow start saw the boys down 15-26 at the first break. The Rivers College team were the biggest and
most physical team we have played so far and it took Canobolas a while to get used to the style of play.
Some great passing from Ben Zegzula and James Gogala allowed a 22 point haul from Matt Gray in the
second quarter, and a switch to full man to man defence saw the score tied leading into half time. Cody
Wright, Owen Burgess and Ben had the task of restricting their quick guards, and did so well. The third
quarter saw all the boys from Canobolas rally, with the scoring shared amongst them. Some great
rebounding by Lachlan Baker, Harry Betts and Luke Wilde led to some easy fast break layups and
Canobolas extended their lead until the final buzzer, to win 101-86. Matt scored a massive 61 points, and
was well assisted by Lachlan with 20.
Lucky we went all that way!
The team now heads to the Top 8 Tournament in Terrigal on the 15th and 16th of June, for
the second consecutive year.
Thank you to coach Mrs Dederer, Mr Riles for driving the bus and babysitting Mia, and Terry
Betts and Megan Baker for coming to support the boys as well as scoring.
From the
Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents and Members of our School Community
We are quickly heading towards the tail end of Term 2 and continue to be exceptionally busy at our
school. Students in Years 7-10 have just completed their half yearly exams and I look forward to
seeing some wonderful results over the coming weeks. It is important that students learn from the
feedback they receive after this exam period and they take on board recommendations from the
teaching staff about ways to improve. If you have any questions regarding the progress of your
child, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
Formal School Assembly
Our formal assembly will be held on Tuesday 21st June at 11am in the school hall. This term we will
be celebrating the success of our students who have made either Bronze, Silver or Gold medallion
level as well as our Students of the Term. All parents or caregivers of students receiving awards have
been sent an invitation to attend the assembly. Any other interested family or community members
are also invited to attend.
Congratulations
Congratulations to our Open Boys Basketball team and their coach Mrs Dederer on their recent win
in Lismore. The boys have now progressed to the final eight teams in the state and will play their
next round of matches on 15th June in Terrigal. We wish them the very best of luck.
School Uniform
With the cooler weather upon us, I remind all parents again of the need to have students wearing
the correct school uniform at all times including school jumpers. If parents are unable to provide the
necessary uniform for their child, please make an appointment to speak with myself or Mrs Dillon in
the office who will arrange something for you.
Red Shield Appeal
Last weekend saw the Salvation Army door knock houses in Orange to raise much needed funds as
part of the Red Shield Appeal. We had a number of our students supporting the school and helping
the Salvos with the appeal. Thankyou to those families who were able to support this wonderful
cause.
Consequences Presentation – Year 12
Next Friday 10th June, Year 12 students will participate in a mock crash scenario hosted by the NSW
Police Force. The scenario titled “Consequences” will focus on what can go wrong if students make
the wrong decision on the road. The event will be held at the Civic Centre North Court and all Year
12 students are expected to attend. Students will be driven to the Civic Centre North Court by bus
and will be supervised by our school staff. If you do not wish for your child to attend this
presentation, please contact me before next Friday.
Support Unit Soccer Success
Congratulations to our students in the Support Unit who participated in a futsal competition last
week. Our students participated against students from other schools across Western NSW and our
team was successful in winning the event on the day. Well done to each of our students.
Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend
On Monday, 13th June the school will be closed due to the Queen’s birthday long weekend.
School resumes on Tuesday morning for all students.
I hope you have a wonderful fortnight and I look forward to speaking with you in two weeks time.
With my warmest regards
Chad Bliss

SUPPORT UNIT NEWS On Tuesday 24th May several support students went to Bathurst and represented our school at the
Western Region Fustal competition for support students. The students did very well and went
through the tournament undefeated. They beat Carenne School Bathurst in the final 5-3.
Support students have been mixing acids and bases with Mr Rodwell in Science lessons.
SCIENCE FACULTY NEWS Mr Boardman’s Yr 11 Physics class doing cool things with iron filings and magnets …
… and Year 10 have been exploring forces and Newton's Laws. They had a lot of fun ensuring their
playdoh families survived collisions.
STEM CENTRE NEWS STEM Transition with Orange East Public – Orange Civic Theatre
This term OEPS are putting on a school production and Year 5
and 6 students are in the process of modelling the Orange Civic
Theatre stage. Mr Scott has been working with the classes on
coding so they can code a light show for their model stage. Last
week the Principal of Orange East, Mr Bourke stopped by and
students taught him some Arduino code!
Equipment Loan
Last week the STEM Centre took delivery of a Denford
CNC Mill. Worth $50,000, this computer controlled router
will allow students in 9 iSTEM to carve balsa into F1 cars
that have been designed and tested on computer. While
this machine is on loan, we are looking at ways that we
can acquire one of these on a permanent basis.
Year 8 STEM – Coding
8STEM classes are making a code powered keyboard
this term. How can we do this? Use our Makey Makey
microcomputer of course! The Makey Makey allows
you to attach things to it using alligator clips, and
these objects can then control the computer using
the Scratch online computer code. Here, 7/8 AcTal
STEM created a circuit of six students that could
control this laptop!
Following this, students used Scratch to code a
sequence controlled by playdough letters. When
the playdough letters were touched by a hand,
the corresponding letters flashed up on the
screen!
Year 9 iSTEM – Aeronautical Engineering
9 iSTEM have continued learning about aeronautical engineering. Students have applied their
knowledge of the four forces of flight into their corflute gliders designs, and tested them. Students
now need to control the yaw, pitch and roll of their gliders to try and get them to fly as straight as
possible.

On Wednesday the 25th May, the girl’s league tag team travelled to Bathurst to participate in the
CRL Country Cup.
In our first game we faced Kelso High School. The girls were extremely keen and showed lots of
enthusiasm during their warm up. They went out firing from the start. The girls managed to score
early with Nailani Lang throwing a dummy from hooker and scoring in the corner. Emily Melnik
scored just before half time when she scooted through the defence, taking the half time score to
8-0. In the second half the girls were making lots of breaks through the middle with some great runs
by Destinee Navale, Caitlin White, Emily Merchant and Sammie Kudrins. This put the side in good
field position and Emily Melnik used this opportunity to catch the defence off guard, with a quick
run from hooker to score under the post. She then converted her own try, taking the score to 14-0.
Nailani then split the defence and used her speed to run away for the final try. The girls defence
was incredible and proved to be too strong, not enabling Kelso to break through at all. Leaving
the final score at 18-0.
In the second game we took on Parkes High School. The girls were once again fired up and
showing off their skills. Emily Melnik received the ball out wide and swivelled her way through the
defensive line and then sped off to score a try. Not long after Erin Naden crossed the line after she
was given a brilliant inside ball from Emily Melnik. This saw the half time score at 8-0. In the second
half the girls started to ask more questions in attack. Nailani once again showed her League Tag
experience and found a gap to cross the line again to make the final score 12-0.
The girls finished 1st in their pool which took them to the Grand Final against Orange High School.
This team was very structured and it was clear to see they had lots of experience. Both teams were
displaying excellent skill throughout the game. Kyiesha Dixon was the first to score after she
stepped her way through the defence. Unfortunately we were unsuccessful in the conversion for
this try. The girls’ great defence denied Orange High of a few tries, with try saving tags from Kalika
Fuller, Bek Turner, Connie-Lee Beletic and Savannah Moore. The girls went in to half time leading 4-
0. With five minutes remaining, some costly errors on our line left us defending 4 continual sets. This
proved to be difficult and the girls became lethargic, Orange High used this opportunity to score
and convert their try. This left Orange High the winners 6-4. The girls showed great sportsmanship
and behaviour throughout the day and should all be very proud of their performance.
Congratulations girls.
Netball NSW Schools Cup On Friday May 20, ten Year 7 and 8 students travelled to
Bathurst to participate in the Netball NSW Schools Cup, in the
7/8 Years Competitive section.
The first game of the day was against St Raphael’s from
Cowra. Being the first time the group had taken the court
together, this game was a warm up where the girls came to
familiarise themselves with each others style of play. While we
went down, the girls took it in their stride and had a number of
personal points to on which to work.
The second game against Kelso 1 saw the girls come out
strong, with Caitlin Masila working well in defence, and Lily
Mitchell demonstrating her strong skills in the shooting circle,
with Krystal Donohoe handy in support. Following our first
victory we came up against a strong team from Oberon. A
strong effort in midcourt from Briana Priest, and relentless defence from Lisa Collyer and Ruby
Nesbitt saw Canobolas sneak in front of the Oberon team, and came away with our second win
of the day. Chloe White, Savannah Cullen and Montanna McIlwain-Browne played consistently
well over the day, gaining confidence with every game we played, and showed improvement
against All Saints College. After suffering an injury during the third game, Tegan Woods decided to
take on the responsibility of umpiring and should be proud of her great effort.
Congratulations to all the girls on a fantastic effort.
Soccer Mentor Day A select group of our Year 10 and 11 Open Soccer team were invited by Orange East Public
School to assist in a mentoring program with the Central West Mariners. This day was aimed at
improving the soccer skills of primary aged kids and getting them out and enjoying physical
activity.
There was a range of different sessions which our students assisted in running, such as passing skills,
dribbling, shooting and blocking balls. The day ended with a full soccer game which our students
assisted with refereeing. This was a fantastic day and great experience filled with many valuable
learning tools for our Opens Soccer team who got to work on their coaching techniques.
The students from Canobolas High represented our school with great pride and respect and their
assistance with the day was greatly appreciated from all involved.

Aeronautical Engineering
Over the past few weeks the Engineering students in Years 10 and 12 have been working on
developing and testing aircraft.
The Year 10 students developed a variety of planes and tested them for both speed and lift.
Once they had done their testing they engaged in a number of ‘dog fights’ where they had to
catch another plane and crash them out of the air.
The most resilient plane which withstood damage was the team of Keru Frost and Josh Beasley.
The Year 12 class have calculated more advanced engineering principles relating to lift, thrust,
drag and glide angles.
The students were involved in a range of problem solving tasks and worked in groups to
complete each activity.
TAS FACULTY NEWS
CANOBOLAS BIG PICTURE
From the start of Term 2, Big Picture students and advisors have been literally flying by the seat of
their pants in preparation for the much anticipated Big Picture Exhibitions. With such an exhaustive
yet productive first term it was time to showcase to the school community and support teams what
Big Picture was all about. From Monday to Friday of Week 2, six periods a day, each student
presented to a panel of five (teachers, parents/guardians, friends and mentors) their portfolio of
work and products from Term 1. Projects consisted of:
Past Maps: Visual representations via poster boards, powerpoints, books, 3D models, sculptures
Future Maps: Speeches, powerpoints, virtual games, 3D models
Oral History: Similarities, Differences and Interesting facts about 3 people via Informational
Interviews and outlined in an speech following the comparative essay format
Autobiographical Sketch: 3-6 page narrative style on a significant event in the students’ lives
A wide array of comments throughout the week were heard amongst the advisories such as: “I was
so stressed out it felt like I had 100s of butterflies shadow boxing in my stomach” to “OMG! I am so
nervous” along with “Gee, that was not too bad.” and “Thank god that’s over.” or even the odd
“Well done. That was great. I am so glad I sat in and observed your exhibition. I feel so much more
confident now that I have seen yours.”
Life skills such as time management, adequate preparation and organisational skills were evident
as the increased level of confidence indicated those who took on board the public speaking
techniques they had mastered throughout the term. This enabled most students to speak for 20 to
30mins about their proposals, products and reflect on the challenges they faced and how they
overcame them as well as problem solved issues throughout the term both individually and
collaboratively with their peers.
Proud moments were observed as students stepped up and were accountable for their learning.
Students had to get organised, schedule a time slot, deliver invitations, take on board honest and
constructive peer and panel feedback and of course, provide special treats as thank you gifts to
panel members (a highly sort after competitive arena here for Term 2).
A HUGE thank you goes out to all the parents/carers, mentors and the many Canobolas staff who
helped throughout Term 1 with projects ideas etc or who were in attendance as panel members
throughout the week. With such an impressive roll up of support, Big Picture students were able to
relish in self pride and celebrate success even with the shed of a proud tear here and there
amongst panel members.
Liverpool Boys High School visit
Good news certainly travels fast. Students, teachers and Deputies from Liverpool Boys High school
made the trip out to the country from the ‘big smoke’ to cast their eyes over the Big Picture
Program at Canobolas. The purpose of the visit was to experience first-hand what it would be like
to sit in a Big Picture classroom and to our delight the students in Advisory 1 and 2 welcomed the
visitors with beautiful smiles and firm handshakes. Over the two days, the Canobolas students
chatted to staff and students about the whole BP experience. Quirky personalities, similar interests
and funny conversations were heard amongst the advisories. Suggestions were even proposed
around perhaps even a little country road trip to the city could be on the agenda when the
school opens its Big Picture doors later this year in Term 4. This visit provided a wonderful
opportunity for all, as professional dialogue and resources were exchanged and enthusiastically
explored and networked for the future. Many thanks to all involved in making this visit a very
rewarding success for all.
Stay tuned as the journey continues …
