Join us at 6:30pm on Wednesday, February 13th for our special Ash Wednesday Services

If you go to the greeting card store looking for a greeting card to send to a friend for Lent, you are not likely

to find one. You will find plenty of Valentine cards, Birthday cards, and “Hope You Are Feeling Better”

cards, but no Lenten cards. For unlike the nostalgia and wonder we experience at Christmas, or the victory

we celebrate at Easter, we don't quite know how to observe Lent.

It doesn't look like very much fun, the Lenten season, certainly not worthy of sending

cards to loved ones. Thinking about our mortality is not something we particularly want

to do for 40 days. No thanks, I'll see you at Easter.

But when we simply show up at Easter, we miss a big part of the story of salvation. We

miss the opportunity to see just how far Jesus dug into the soil of our humanity. We

begin to see our sin for what it is, and we begin to understand why it was that Jesus had

to die on an “Old Rugged Cross” to set us free from ourselves.

--Romans 5:8 reminds us that “While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us”

Special Lenten Devotion Guides will be available to families following the service.

A Beautiful Devotional Thought

Does God really love us forever? Not just on Sunday when our shoes are shined and our hair is

fixed. We want to know . . . how does God feel about me when I am a jerk? Not when I am peppy,

being positive and ready to tackle world hunger. I know how He feels about me when I think He

cannot see me.

I want to know how He feels about me when I snap at anything that moves, when my thoughts are

gut-level, when my tongue is sharp enough to slice a rock. How does He feel about me then?

God answered our question before we asked it. So we’d see His answer, He lit the sky with a star.

So we’d hear it, He filled the night with a choir; and so we’d believe it, He did what no man had

ever dreamed. He became flesh and dwelt among us.

He placed His hand on the shoulder of humanity and said, “You’re something special.”

FROM THE BOARD OF DEACONS

Your Board of Deacons was very active during the past two months. The Board promoted gifts for the family that

Johnny Butler is working with for Christmas. The Board sent out the letter for Christmas gifts for the church staff

and promoted a special offering for Mark and Sarah Williams, missionaries to South Africa, to be used in their

work. Christmas gifts for homebound members were purchased and delivered by Board members.

The Board’s Bible emphasis for the past month was Luke. Board members will be reading and studying the book of

John during the coming month. All church members and friends are encouraged to join with the Board in this Bible

emphasis.

“Sunday School Update”

January Bible Study started January 4, 2013, at 7:30 p.m. with 18 members in attendance. It will be running for

six weeks. We are so pleased Rev. Bill Duganne, our Youth Minister, is teaching Living Like You Belong to God.

These classes are on Friday nights allowing Rev. Duganne to continue with the Youth on Wednesday nights. All

members are invited and are welcome to bring a friend. The class usually last until about 9:00 p.m. You will be

provided with a sheet with the scripture references printed so having your Bible with you is optional.

Two new Young Adult classes have been started recently. For the ladies, Susan Butler is teaching and for the

men, Johnny Butler will lead. There is a class for everyone so please join us on Sunday at 9:40 a.m. each week. If

you have any questions regarding a class, please feel free to call the church or me (270-2215) at home.

“The Library Corner of Our Church”

The Book Club reviewed For One More Day by Mitch Albom, the author of Tuesdays with Morrie and The

Five People You Meet in Heaven. It’s a small, easy read book that anyone would enjoy. If you’ve lost a person

you would love to spend one more day with, this is the book for you. I’m suggesting we read Gone Girl by

Gillian Flynn for our March meeting. Barbara and I have both read this and it has been on the “Best Seller” list

in the Richmond newspaper for several Sundays.

There are always books of various interests in our Library and we would love for you to come up and explore the

selection. If you need help, please ask us and we’ll be happy to search out any book we feel would satisfy your

interest.

How do I support Sara and Mark Williams’ mission in South Africa?

After meeting Mark and Sara last Sunday folks are asking, “How can I help?”

There are two up-coming opportunities:

1. You may write a check to the “Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.” Please include on your check memo line

“Mark and Sara Williams. South Africa”. Bring or mail your check to Westhampton Baptist Church, and it

will be forwarded to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship in Atlanta. CBF will then place your gift in Mark and

Sara’s account.

2. On Sunday, February 3rd, the Youth have invited the church to join them for a SOUPer-Bowl luncheon

immediately after the worship hour. There no charge for the meal, but there will be an offering plate available

in which you may leave a “love gift.” The church will see that those gifts also get to Mark and Sara.

Thank you so much for your support.

canned meat, canned fruit, cereal, oatmeal, peanut butter, jelly,

spaghetti, and spaghetti sauce.

For February, we need to purchase two $25 gifts cards for Hess or BP
