The Calkin Family Origins
The Calkin Family Shield showing the Calkin Coat of Arms.
Origins Of The Calkin Name
There are two main schools of thought on the origins of the surname "Calkin".
One version is that the name is patronymical in origin, e.g. the suffix of "kin" signifying
the "son of", leaving Cal as a pet form of Caleb.
Another thought is that the Calkin is a part of a horseshoe, and therefore the name is
derived from the occupation of a blacksmith. Every village had it's share of Smith
families, but maybe one decided to be more original and choose the name based on one
of his creations.
So what is a "calkin" on a horseshoe ?
A Calkin is a raised & squared thickening of the metal of the hind shoe at the outer
edge of the heel. This will increase the grip. A similar effect can be created on the inside
of the heel by thickening the metal into a wedge shape (wedge heel) which is less likely
to cause brushing than will a calkin.
The Calkin family is now visible worldwide with migration to the four corners of the
earth.
I have obtained a document dated 6th October 1989 which lists the full names and
addresses of 367 Calkin families.
It comprises 84 here in England, 216 in the U.S.A., 48 in New Zealand and 19 in
Canada.

Tracing The Calkin Ancestry
Firstly it has to be understood that there is no definitive spelling of "Calkin".
Long before the days when everyone could read and write, often when someone was
recording a name, they would ask the supplier of the name and simply record how it sounded.
In most cases there was no point in asking the individual themselves how their name was
spelt as they would have no grasp of the alphabet at all.
Therefore a northern accent may make the Calkin name sound like and be spelt as "Caulkin",
the "i" could easily become a "y" or even an "e" and it would be just as easy to mistake a
plural group of Calkins to be forever thus spelt.
For my part though I will stick with that which is by far the most prevalent spelling - Calkin.
The earliest mention of Calkin (or derivative thereof) that I have traced so far was in reports
of the Battle Of Crecy in 1346.
This was a most significant battle of The Hundred Years War.
The "Hundred Years' War" between France and England (1337-1453) was an episodic
struggle lasting well over a hundred years, for much of the time without any conflict.
King Edward the Third was accompanied into battle with a number of knights, one of who
was listed as:
Sir Hugh Calkyn of Flanders with 4 Esquires.
This can be read in "English Historical Documents" - The Government Of The Realm by
David Douglas (and others).
(I read that on a visit to the Society of Geneaologists in London)
The only other sources for material are all the usual places:
Parish Registers and collections thereof such as The Church of the Latter Day Saints
Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates
Census Records
Trade Directories
Word of mouth ....
Unfortunately, my pedigree line research has hit a wall with Nathaniel Calkin of Stafford.
There are mentions of earlier Calkin families, such as in the Monmouth, Waverton and
Cheshire areas but I've not yet proved a link between them and what is not very far away,
Staffordshire.

Family of John Baptiste Calkin
John Baptiste Calkin. Cyber Hymnal - The Works of J.B. Calkin *
From Wikipedia
Life
He was born in London on 16 March 1827, the son of James Calkin (1786–1862), composer and pianist.
Reared in a musical atmosphere, he studied music under his father, and his three brothers, Joseph, James,
and George, also adopted the profession.[1]
When nineteen Calkin was appointed organist, precentor, and choirmaster of St Columba's College, Dublin,
in succession to Edwin George Monk. St. Columba's College was a school mainly for the boys of the upper
classes and for candidates for the ministry of the Church of Ireland; music and the Irish language were
prominent features in the curriculum. From 1846 to 1853, Calkin maintained a high standard of choral music
at St. Columba's, and he cultivated composition. From 1853 to 1863 he was organist and choirmaster of
Woburn Chapel, London; from 1863 to 1868 organist of Camden Road Chapel; and from 1870 to 1884
organist at St. Thomas's Church, Camden Town. [1]
In 1883, Calkin became professor at the Guildhall School of Music under Thomas Henry Weist-Hill, and
concentrated on teaching and composing. He was on the council of Trinity College, London, a member of
the Philharmonic Society (1862), and a fellow of the College of Organists, incorporated in 1893. [1]
Calkin died at Hornsey Rise Gardens on 15 April 1905, and was buried in Highgate cemetery.[1]
Works
As a composer, Calkin essayed many forms, but his sacred music is best known, especially his morning and
evening services in B flat, G, and D. His communion service in C is marked Op. 134, a sufficient proof of
his fertility. He wrote much for the organ, including numerous transcriptions, and he scored many string
arrangements, as well as original sonatas, duos, &c. His hymn tunes, though not to be found in 'Hymns
Ancient and Modern,' are in other collections.
6
Calkin's setting of "Fling out the Banner" (by Bishop G. W. Doane) has a great vogue in America and the
British colonies, and was included in the Canadian Book of Common Praise (1909), edited by Sir George
Martin. His "Agape" was composed specially for the 'Church Hymnary of Scotland (1871), to the words
"Jesu, most loving God", and was inserted in the Church Hymnal of Ireland (1874).[1]
His best known work is the setting from 1872 of a popular Christmas song I Heard the Bells on Christmas
Day by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
From Calkin Ancestry
John Baptiste Seventh of 8 children born to James and Victoire
Composer, organist, precentor, and choirmaster.
He was a prolific composer of church services, anthems and hymns.

On his return to London he served in various churches in London.
He then became an esteemed professor at the Guildhall School of Music and later at Croydon Conservatory.
In 1872 John Baptiste wrote the music to the classic carol "I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day", to which
Longfellow supplied the words.
Longfellow's words were a poem written in 1864 during the American Civil War following his son being
badly wounded in 1863.
When J.B.C. set them to music, two verses referring to the war were removed.

Family of Frederick George Calkin or ...
Robert Henry Joseph Calkin
This is a real mystery as there are cross-references to two people who seem to "share" the same family but
are called two different names as one follows the clues from 1863 right through to 1946.
Culminating in the unusual (and quite frankly bizarre claim) that the original Frederick George fathered
three children while in his 70's.
I personally think son Frederick George must be the father of the latter children.
This is a tangle which I will unravel, when I get round to it.
Calkin, Frederick George It is believed that F.G. may be a child of Alfred Thomas ... birth certificate has been ordered.
The marriage certificate of his first wedding in 1895 has "Robert" living at
60, Newnham Terrace, Hercules Road, Lambeth.
Occupation on the 1895 certificate is "Upholsterer (Joineryman)". Occupation as declared in 1901 census =
"Shipwright".
The 1901 census has Frederick living with his wife and three daughters at,
23, East Street, Sittingbourne, Kent.
The 1911 census has Robert Henry Joseph (aged 46) living with wife Emily and four children at Nettlestead,
Paddock Wood, Kent.
His occupation is given as "Inspector Water Works".
On Ellie May's marriage certificate of 1918, her father Frederick is listed as a "Water Inspector"
The marriage certificate of son Reginald in 1929 has Fred's occupation as "Hotel Inspector".
After his first wife Emily died in 1928, Frederick re-married in 1932 (aged "58" ... born 1874 ?) ...
The marriage certificate of this second wedding "Frederick" living at High Street, Snodland.
Frederick's father is listed as Alfred (deceased) a "Composer of Music".
