On a balmy Thursday afternoon on 1 December, 12 members took to the fairways of Royal Canberra Golf Course for

the fourth annual Carbine Club Russell Parkes Memorial Golf Day. Final scores were very close but Mark Sullivan

won the day with 39 points from Allan Hawke on 37 points. A fantastic day was had by all and it was great to have

Helen Parkes along to present the trophy to Mark.

That same evening the club hosted its inaugural Christmas Cocktail Party with 50 members and their respective

partners enjoying a great evening on the balcony of Royal Canberra Golf Club. The event was an outstanding success

with the function to be included as a permanent feature on the Carbine Club of the ACT calendar.

That same night the club announced the inaugural Carbine Club of the ACT Sporting Scholarship with the recipient

of the $4000 scholarship being awarded to Joe Slater from the Weston Creek Molonglo Cricket Club. Joe is a fast

bowler with potential to play First Class cricket as a bowling all-rounder. Joe has worked hard over the past twelve

months to enhance his strength and aerobic capacity and we are looking for a breakout season from him in

2016/2017. The scholarship will provide Joe with additional support as he pursues his dream of playing first class

cricket.

On Friday 9 December, 40 members including our Patron Hon. John Gallop attended The Carbine Club of the ACT

2016 AGM which was followed by lunch in the Boardroom of Jim Murphy’s

President Mac Howell reported on the year's activities and highlighted the highly successful and varied events that

the Club conducted during the year. In his report Mac made the important point that membership of the Carbine Club

should not be taken for granted. A lot of work from Club Secretary Paul Walshe goes into organising our events

throughout the year and all members need to support the club and its functions.

The Club remains in a healthy financial position with a small profit being made this year.

At the AGM the following positions were filled for 2017.

Committee, Allan Williams, Cade Brown, Maurice Reilly, Todd Wills

Both Allan Hawke AC and John Mackay AM did not seek re-election after well over a decade of service, their

support and assistance over the years and throughout 2016 has been tremendous and very much appreciated.

10 new members were accepted into the club including Bronwyn Fagan a well-respected lawyer in Canberra who

also co-hosts ABC666 Radio Grandstand program with Tim Gavel on Saturday mornings and is a member of the

Canberra Raiders Board.

THE CARBINE CLUB OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA – Test Cricket Luncheon

The Carbine Club welcomed 550 guests at their recent Test Cricket luncheon in the William Magarey

Room at Adelaide Oval. It was a great day leading into a Test that even if the series had been

decided, the coach Darren Lehmann was impressively confident that they would win the Adelaide

Test, and they duly did. Several Senior Members of The Club thought the Luncheon was one of the

best ever – not bad for Members who have been to so many!

Australia.

wager for CanDo4Kids

A certain favourite with the crowd, and also on his betting prowess with our MC, Wayne ‘Flip’ Phillips

– they earned another $250k for CanDo4Kids, making it a total of $12,250 raised for the charity on

the day – a great effort.

The Carbine Club of South Australia has unanimously agreed that The Club, from the 2016 Rio

Olympics, will acknowledge South Australian Gold Medalists with a set of Bohemia Chrystal CC

inscribed Wine Glasses. Paralympian Brayden Davidson accompanied by his father Mark was the

first to receive our prestigious Award. Our other Olympian Gold Medalist, Kyle Chalmers was not

able to attend due to illness but Kyle will be presented with his award at the next opportunity he is

able to attend. Brett Chalmers, Father of Kyle was in attendance and we look forward to him being in

attendance again when Kyle is also able to attend to receive his award.

Brayden was humbled by the win in Rio and was also in awe of the

legend sports people such as Merv, Flip and Club Special Member

Mark Ricciuto. Merv was certainly smitten and not shy to have a

picture taken with Roo and Flip.

Past CCSA President, David Shipway, in his capacity of an Ambassador, spoke on behalf of the

CanDo4Kids charity, and also acknowledged Bernie Lange on his last official lunch as Carbine Club

President. Also he serenaded Merv’s 55th birthday! Happy Days…

Carbine Club of Western Australia Treasurer, Matthew Fahey

and Luke Cunningham -– enjoyed the day. This Luncheon was

the perfect exercise as a trial run for Clubs being able to

classify one of their 2017 Luncheons as an International

Luncheon.

To add to the enjoyment on the day an exceptional

sponsorship from Serafino Wines included their medal

winning 2014 Shiraz and delicate Fiano Bellissimo.

But for the birthday boy Merv, Steve Maglieri presented him

with a bottle of Terramoto Syrah – double gold award and

97points from James Halliday – what a bottle! Lucky Merv.

The crowd wound out the day at the Lindsay Head Terrace Bar overlooking Adelaide – a fitting place

to end a great lunch.

Hong Kong – International Races Luncheon

The Carbine Club of

Hong Kong welcomed

425 members and

guests to the annual

International Races

Luncheon on Friday,

9th December 2016,

held at the Grand Hyatt

Hotel in Wan Chai.

This traditional

luncheon has become a

regular part of the

magnificent "Turf

World Championships"

racing week held in

Hong Kong every

December.

Master of Ceremonies Mark Richards once again conducted event with his usual aplomb introducing

President John Ridley who welcomed everyone to the luncheon then introduced the day's speakers.

First across the post was Malcolm "Miracle" Johnson who spoke of wonderful association with

Kingston Town. He shared his amusing adventures in racing which had the audience rolling in the

aisles. He concluded by proposing the "Toast to Racing."

Running a close second was BBC TV Racing Commentator Richard Pitman, retired British jump

jockey, who rode 470 winners in his career including Lanzarote in the 1974 Champion Hurdle.

Richard proposed the "Toast to the Carbine Club."

Derek Currie, former President of the Carbine Club of Hong Kong (1998-1999), and famed footballer,

was honored by the club by receiving his 25 year membership badge. Derek was one of the first

professional players to play in Asia when Hong Kong introduced professional football in 1970.

The lunch concluded with Hong Kong Jockey Club race caller Brett Davies delivering an exciting

Phantom Call of the 2000M Cup Race. Brett called the result correctly as Maurice, ridden by

Champion Jockey of the Year Ryan Moore, won by three lengths.

The club raised about HK$ 122,000.00 (approximately AU$ 21,500.00) at the lunch to donate to the

Riding for the Disabled charity in Hong Kong.

HK continued……

The Carbine Club of Hong Kong wishes to acknowledge the kind support of Inglis and Tattersall’s for

their ongoing sponsorship, Cathay Pacific for flying our guest speakers to Hong Kong, and the Grand

Hyatt Hotel for accommodating our guests.

After the lunch, members and guests retired to the Poolside Bar to continue exchanging exaggerated

racing stories and predictions for Sunday's International Race Meeting.

From all the Members of the Carbine Club in Hong Kong we wish all our fellow Carbine Club

Members all over the world a happy holiday season and a healthy and successful New Year.

‘Tis The Season……..

With 2016 rapidly coming to its end Clubs have been celebrating the year:

NZ … the Club held a Christmas barbecue at Vice President Peter Jeffares’ house where hosts Peter and

his wife Nicola ensured a fantastic spread of food and beverages, the weather and venue were perfect, and

the opportunity to mix and mingle with fellow members was greatly appreciated.

Club NZ earlier enjoyed a day at the races in November

where Club member Sir Patrick Hogan’s horse Ronchi

won the Carbine Club Trophy at the Auckland Race

Club’s Melbourne Cup meeting; member Peter Walker,

a committeeman with the ARC, invited Club members

to the Chairman’s suite to watch the action and enjoy

the hospitality.

In a newsletter to NZ members John Lindsay, President of the Carbine Club of NZ, commented on the year

in review; included in John’s review was the following comment which applies to all Carbine Clubs and

certainly bears repeating here:

“And through it all we members of the Carbine Club have been privileged to

have the Club Luncheons and meetings to retain our equilibrium and

enthusiasm by celebrating our love of sport, by continuing and renewing our

friendships, by listening to interesting, informative and at times challenging

speakers and by contributing to assist special athletes in the attainment of

their sporting goals.”

NSW… CCNSW finished their year with the now traditional

gathering at the SCG where Club Member and cricketing legend

Alan Davidson presented the annual Davo Award to rugby legend

Sir Nicholas Shehadie and both these wonderful sportsmen added

to the day with their words of wisdom and great interest. Alan is

pictured, arriving at the SCG, alongside the gate named in his

honour.

TAS… members of CC TAS

gathered at the Royal Automobile Club

of Tas on Monday 19 Dec to celebrate the

year with a casual cocktail party and to

hear from Scott Bowden, Olympic cyclist

from Rio.

Scott was a recipient of a CCTAS grant to

assist him on the road to Rio and he

delighted the crowd with his insight into

the journey – MC Steve Adermann had

the easiest possible time as interviewer

with Scott slipping very comfortably into

PNG… CCPNG members held their annual Christmas Cocktail Function at the Crowne Plaza, once again in true PNG style!

Congress Chairman Lloyd Meredith and his wife Jan were special guests in PNG with Lloyd taking the opportunity to cast his over the preparations for the upcoming (2018) Congress to be held in Port Moresby.
