Letter from the President 2020– No. 6
Welcome to the July edition of the BUZZ.
The midst of winter is a great time for those of us who like to snuggle up in front
of the heater and catch up on some reading or watch a movie. On those crisp
sunny days, we have an opportunity to get out for some fresh air, perhaps a
leisurely stroll or if you are in need of a little more exercise, join one of our
walking groups.
At the June Committee meeting, planning for the gradual reintroduction of activities was
discussed. The walking groups, beginning with the Bushwalkers, have recommenced their regular
program of walks and several smaller groups have begun meeting at members’ homes and in other
places where allowed. Committee encourages convenors and their group participants to discuss
how they might resume. Please let Lyn Goodall know your plans via email to
Other groups have continued to catch up via email, phone calls and online Zoom meetings. Zoom
get-togethers have proved satisfactory for most participants, although some members have had
difficulty in joining meetings. Convenors who would like to use U3A Bendigo’s Pro License to host
a Zoom meeting should get in touch with Michael Gallagher via email to [email protected] to
obtain access to our Zoom credentials or for advice.
All members are requested that when they meet in person, they abide with the COVID-19
Protocols for U3A Members. These were endorsed by Committee following the May meeting and
have been circulated with the June BUZZ and published on the U3A Bendigo website. The state
and federal governments have advised the easing of further restrictions are planned to take effect
in coming weeks, allowing for more activities to be gradually reintroduced.
Indoor activities at St Mary’s are not recommencing yet, even with the relaxation of restrictions, as
many members may still be at risk due to their age or underlying health issues.
As a result of the restrictions, U3A Bendigo’s Committee of Management decided to postpone the
AGM until it was possible for members to meet again in the hall. Committee is now planning to
conduct the AGM on Wednesday, 26 August 2020, if possible. The date will be confirmed
following the July Committee meeting after which a notice will be published in the BUZZ.
Members are invited to consider nominating for Committee. If you would like further information,
please let me know. Committee extends its grateful thanks to retiring Committee member, Brenda
Stevens-Chambers, for her involvement and willingness to participate in meetings.
As we look forward to many of our activities resuming in coming weeks, please remember to look
after yourself and each other by adhering to the hygiene and distancing rules that are in place to
help protect us. If you are attending an activity, ask yourself if you are well and able to participate.
I am sure we are all keen to see each other again and share our stories in these extraordinary
times.

VALE
Mary Hallam
Sympathy is extended to Neville, family and
friends of Mary Hallam who passed away on
May 26 after a two and a half years battle
with cancer.
Mary was a valued member of the U3A, ac-
tive in several groups:
In the garden group, her love and knowledge
of plants, especially natives, made Mary the
go-to for any queries.
Mary had been an active hiker for many
years. She was a member of the Hiking group
having joined in 2016; she was always inter-
ested and friendly.
She also joined the Bushwalking group until
her health prevented her attending.
A retired teacher, Mary attended many U3A
classes over the years, always wanting to
learn more; and she travelled the world to
appease her love of walking.
Mary always had a ready smile for everyone.
A lovely lady who will be sadly missed by many.

Correction:
The witty poem about Covid-19, con-
tributed by Barb Ritchie in the last
issue was wrongly credited to Jan
Beaumont from the Starts at 60
Community. Val Wellings has alert-
ed us to the fact that the well-known
and amusing poet Pam Ayres actual-
ly penned this tribute to self-
isolation. Thanks, Val.

COVID 19 Protocols for U3A Bendigo Members
[at the time of printing]
Be aware of your underlying health issues by asking yourself if I am at a greater risk if I attend an activity at the moment.
Maintain social distancing of 1.5 metres. Use good hygiene practices by washing your hands and using sanitizer. Car-pooling is not permitted until further notice. Outdoor group activities are limited to 20 participants in stage two. U3A indoor activities are not allowed in stage two. From 21 June, indoor physical recreation will be allowed in stage three with up to 20 people allowed per
separate enclosed space, subject to the four square metre rule, with up to 10 people per group or activity.
Stage three allows sport and exercise activities if you can keep your distance (at least 1.5 metres apart)
and they are not competitive. All indoor venues will need to abide by existing physical distancing requirements of one person per four
square metres.

U3A Table Tennis Group
As Co-cordinators, Michele Robinson and myself consider it is un-
wieldy and unworkable for U3A members to restart table tennis at
Eaglehawk until doubles games can be played.
It is also noted at the moment that it is not possible to use the social
area of the building and the social interaction of U3A table tennis group is an important part
of this group.
As soon as it is possible to re-start, members will be advised through the Buzz.
Kind regards,
Ann Cooper

Notes for Members
In Victoria we still have restrictions and a State of Emergency, as I write. We also have a Di-
rective (by Law) that we cannot participate in indoor activities. Until this changes, it is unlikely
that we can use the St Mary's rooms. We are also beholden to the Church (our Landlords) as to
when we can start.
However due to some restrictions being lifted and your Committee having given their approval,
some outdoor groups and those undertaken in a member’s home, have started back.
The Walking groups, Art groups, Chess and the RUGS Book Club have all been given approval
to start with Insurance coverage. It is expected that the Radio Players will also have started
back by the time you read this.
Matters are being reviewed and changing all the time, so please keep a watch on our Facebook
Page, UMAS and Convenor's Bulletins.
Please contact your Convenor to find out what's happening in your groups, if you haven't heard
yet.

MENTAL HEALTH TIP – MORNING NOTES
One of the issues that has come to the fore during the COVID-19 pan-
demic is a rise in the incidence of people experiencing poor mental
health. For example, people who are used to having lots of other people
around them might get depressed as a result of enforced social isolation.
Employment, money and housing concerns can cause a spike in anxiety.
The rise in mental health issues can worsen symptoms for those who had
existing issue before the pandemic, but can also initiate them for some people who have never
experienced issues in the past.
There is plenty of advice out there about what you can do to address mental health issues af-
ter they arise. However, it is good to get into the habit of doing regular exercises that might
stop them arising in the first place. We don’t think twice about exercising to maintain our
physical health, and many people have a program in place to do just that. However, we are
far less likely to have a good mental health plan in place.
One simple technique that can be used is what’s referred to as “morning notes”. (cont. page 9)

ACTIVITY NOTES
GARDENING AND GROWING THINGS
This article was in the Royal Horticulture Society of Victoria magazine
The botanists Banks and Solander observed and collected Australian
flora during Captain Cook’s first of three voyages to the South Seas.
There was a team of botanical illustrators, (they all perished along the
route) – John Reynolds, Sydney Parkinson, and Alexander Buchan),
without their work, imagine how difficult it would have been to publish
accurate descriptions, based on the collected items, eventually fading to
brown and black specimens.
Since the second aim of Captain Cook’s voyage was to record natural
history, the Australian Plant Society Victoria, conducted an exhibition in
2020 to acknowledge the success of that aim.
So what might the Endeavour crew have seen? Banksia plants were on
the list, imagine how difficult it would have been to explain the flower
spikes and fruiting cones without a coloured botanical drawing. Analysis
indicates that there are almost 300 individual flowers on the spike
structure of banksia coccinea.
Banksia solandri was first collected by William Baxter in the 1800s and
the name honours Daniel Solander who was on the Endeavour voyage.
Banksia solandri is a large shrub found in Western Australia, part of its
attraction are the large leaves and cream/yellow flowers which appear
during spring and summer. Two more stunning plants are the banksia
coccinea and the banksia canel, the canel has bunches of seed cones
which makes for another interesting attraction to this plant. No doubt
Captain Cook and his crew would have been pretty amazed at these
incredible plants.
There is an Australian native plant nursery called ‘Karwarra Australian
Plant Garden and Nursery’ at Kalorama, open all year round; if you
happen to be near there at any time, could be well worth a look.

Variations on this idea
come from many different sources, includ-
ing a program called “The Artist’s Way”,
which you can look up if you are interest-
ed. The main goal in that program was to
enhance creativity, but it works just as
well in reducing the impact of anxiety and
depression. If you experience insomnia, try
it in the middle of the night when your
mind is racing and stopping you sleeping.
The technique is as follows - first thing in
the morning, before brekky, you sit down
and just write out longhand (no computers)
everything that’s on your mind. Just get it
all out, good or bad. Don’t edit or worry
about grammar. Have a rant if you want
to. Aim to write for about 15-20 minutes,
or maybe do a page of an exercise book
each day.
It’s not a diary and not something that you
ever read back over. You throw it out after
you’ve done it. It tends to clear your mind
for the day ahead. The simple act of put-
ting things down on paper can be a relief in
many ways.
You can also use the notes to make a plan
for the coming day/week etc – important in
these times. When you commit a list of jobs
to paper, you are more likely to do them
than if you just think about it. Ticking
them off gives you a sense of achievement.
Give it a try over a couple of weeks, writ-
ing every morning. It won’t work for every-
one, but you might just be one of those who
gains benefit from writing regular morning
notes.
Next issue we will give you another Mental
Health Tip about breathing, submitted by a
member.
