Buzz About Book Week
Australian School Library Association Inc.
Create a buzz about shortlisted books for a term
Provides TLs with a Term Program focussing on quality Australian literature
Annual theme can provide another level of engagement for students and class teachers.

Theme Ideas

29
The theme surrounding escape and linking to books provides endless ideas for TLs.
Which books/stories/characters have either focussed on an escape or needed to escape from a situation?
Could be the basis of a writing task – students can write about where they would like to escape to – could be a real or fictional place. Could even write it cryptically, so other students have to work it out.
Develop further into a drama piece, short film or stop motion animation

30
Catalogue searches to locate those titles which feature a character or story relating to an escape. Group activity
Library scavenger hunt using catalogue searches to unlock clues to help in the ficticious ‘escape’ of students in the Library
Use Chris Grabenstein’s book ‘Escape from Mr Lemoncello’s Library’ which is full of puzzles, puns and references to book titles. Activities downloaded from the website

31
Design online travel brochures using online tool –‘canva’. Advertising a weekend away to a fictional place – Narnia, Oz, 100 acre wood, Hogwarts etc. Students may also use the brochure option in Microsoft Word
Use the following quote by Mason Cooley ‘Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are’ – ask students what this means to them and which book has ‘taken’ them ‘somewhere else’?

John Edmonson HS TL, Mandy Kirk has developed a ‘digital breakout’ task called ‘An Oliver Twist’ using both the theme and the Oliver LMS.
Students crack codes, use the catalogue and solve puzzles to discover the solution.
An example of the online ‘postcard’, Mandy used as part of the task shows some of the hyperlinked clues in the next slide.

Students judge the shortlisted titles using same criteria as the ‘real’ judges. This can be located via the ‘Book of the Year Awards’ tab, click on ‘Entry Information and scroll to the bottom of the page on the CBCA website
Students can write up their evaluations of a category –Early Childhood for example, then vote by secret ballot or via online survey tool such as Survey Monkey or ‘Google Forms’ from the Google suite of applications
Use rebus word puzzles to develop a puzzle based on a shortlisted title......

....these may be displayed in the library or all around the school to be solved by students/staff.
