Kylemore Castle - Some HistoryThe story starts with a man named Mitchell Henry and his beloved wife Margaret.

They became entranced with Connemara and its landscape after spending sometime there on their honeymoon. While dreaming of one day owning property in Connemara, they rented the Kylemore Lodge whenever they visited the area.

Mitchell Henry, a surgeon, came into a vast fortune when his father, a cotton merchant died. His father was Alexander Henry of the A & S Henry & Co. in Manchester England.

He turned away from his profession as a doctor and went into business and politics.

He also bought Kylemore Lodge and built, for his wifeMargaret,amagnificentcastlewith33bedrooms, 4 baths, 4 sitting rooms, a ballroom, study, library, billiardsroomalongwithofficesandresidences for the staff.

Construction of Kylemore Castle began in 1867 and was completed in 1871. It took 100 men to build this magnificentcastle.

Margaret Henry was an heiress, the daughter of George Vaughan of Quilly House, Co. Down. It is unclear whether she had any money, but she did have the right to use the family crest and coat

of arms, which for a female, was unheard of in the day.

(It is Margarets family Coat of Arms that hangs over the main entrance!)

She was also cousin to Cardinal Vaughan who was a considered to be a great man. He was known to visit Kylemore often.

Margaret and Mitchell married in the 1840s and by the time they moved into Kylemore Castle, they had 9 children.

The castle grounds included 2 hobby farms and the largest Victorian Walled Gardens in Ireland, complete with 21 glass greenhouses.

Kylemore & J.J. OMalleys, Westportwall panels inside the Abbey, it is Margarets family crest over the entrance to the Abbey.

Margaret contracted dysentery while on a family vacation in Egypt and died.

Mitchell built a Neo-Gothic Chapel and a Mausoleum in her memory.

After walking around the grounds for a bit, we were joined by Paul and Stephanie and we went for a late lunch at the Tea Room.

The food in this place is served cafeteria style, but dont be fooled by that. The meals we had there on bothoccasionswemagnificent, withawidevarietyof offerings and a great selection of beverage choices.

Housed in the same building is the gift shop where I bought the cutest little sheep covered umbrella.

I also bought Stephanie an Irish souvenir coin with a special saying about friendship on it. Her spirits were pretty low. The coin perked her up.

After our lunch we headed back up to the Abbey, where Paul discussed the procedure for getting an interview or two lined up for me the next day.Soon we were off and headed back towards Westport. It was already late in the day and the wind had not let up.

We got back to the B & B, everyone headed to their respective rooms for showers and we were headed into Westport and J.J. OMalleys for supper.

The meal at J.J. OMalleys was served by a great gal who had an awesome sense of humour.

The shrimp and salmon pizza I had was a very different sort of meal from the others I had had so far. The crust was light and crisp and the cream cheese combines with the smoked salmon and shrimp made for a very rich meal indeed.

The chocolate brownie that I had for dessert was nothing short of heavenly.

It was here that I learned never to order a pop in a pub! For the little 1/2 bottle it was almost 3 Euros, more than a coffee and I had had two! OUCH!

Oh well, small price to pay for the great food, atmosphere and company!

After our meal we walked around Westport a bit. Its such a pretty place and on this Sunday evening, we

had the streets pretty much to ourselves although there was music coming from many of the pubs!

We went via cab back to the B & B, it didnt take me long to go to sleep!

We were up and ready to go early. We had to be back at Kylemore Abbey for 10am, I was to interview Sister Maire Hickey, the Abbess and a tour guide named Eithne OHalloran.

I had a phenomenal full Irish for breakfast and then got my bike packed up. It was funny to listen to the donkeys braying that they wanted their breakfast too!

Cillcoman Lodge B & B was another fantastic experience created by two great people, Bernard and Mary and I cant thank them enough for their hospitality and care!

We saddled up and headed out, as I wanted to stop at the Famine Monument. The weather was trying to be nice, banks of clouds would roll through and then the sky would become a brilliant blue and then a little later the clouds would roll in and the whole process would be repeated. The temperature was comfortable but it was still a wee bit windy.

The Famine Monument in the Doolough Pass of Connemara was erected to pay homage to those who perished in the Doolough Tragedy In 1849 someofficialsfromWestportweresupposedtodoan inspection of people who were receiving relief from the government in the town of Louisburgh. The Famine Monument - Doolough Passandtheofficialsmovedontothe Delphi Hunting Lodge some 12 miles or 19 KMs away.

The people of Louisburgh were told that if they wanted their relief to continue they would have to come to the Delphi Lodge for the next morning. In extremely bad weather, hundreds of destitute and starving people walked the road,7wereconfirmeddeadon the roadside along the route and 9 others never made it back to their homes.

The locals however, dispute the numbers of the government officialsandclaimitwasafarhigher number that perished.

The monument that was created an unveiled in 1997 has a quote from Mahatma Gandhi on it that reads:How can men feel themselves honoured by the humiliation of their fellow beings.

There is an annual famine walk that takes place between Lousiburgh and Doolough to remember the lost souls.

After some time at the Famine Monument, we had to get on the road to Kylemore Abbey. I was looking forward to this series of interviews as today

I was going to get to see the famous Victorian Walled Gardens. Being a former florist,Iwastrulylookingforward to seeing them.

The winds had died down a bit and Mother Nature was trying really hard to give us a

goodday, butfilminginthisstrangeclimateprovedchallenging. The humidity in the air washed colors out and just made it really tough, but in spite of those challenges I still managed to get some great information on both Kylemore Abbey and the Victorian Walled Gardens from tour guide Eithne OHalloran.

I also had a great chat with the Abbess, Sister Maire Hickey who spent some time with me discussing the Abbey and its future.Shewasacharmingwomanfilledwith a passion for seeing this beautiful place thrive.

The sisters employ a lot of people in the region and the

Abbey and the Walled Gardens are vital to the survival of those living in the region.

The video below is an excerpt from the interview that I did with Eithne for Ride Like a Local on Eastlink TV:

    Victorian Walled Gardens

These walled gardens according the Eithne are not only the largest in all of Ireland, but they were amongst the last of their kind to be built.

It was a great social coupe if you will for the Henrys to be able to grow exotic fruits, vegetables and flowers.Thegardenshereprovidedanenormousamount of food and pleasure for the owners, their guests and their staff.

Kylemore Castle in its hey day employed some 400 people.

The head gardener was one of the most valued of all the employees, his efforts to make stunning gardens that produced quality goods was so

important to the social standing of the landownerthat they were housed very well and paid handsomely.

There is so much more to the story and the history of Kylemore Abbey that Id like to share with you, but I have so many other things to share, that I will leave it to you to go to Ireland and discover the rest about Kylemore for yourself!

After leaving Kylemore we headed towards Doolin.

The slide shows to the left give you a bit more of a feel for the gardens and the paths to them. It was mid October when we visited and I have to tell you that I was amazed at how many plants were still blooming.

They are lovingly tended by a regular staff of 7 and during peak season there will be 12-13 gardnerslookingafterthesemagnificent, controlled style, Victorian gardens!

    Cliffs of Moher

Reportedly this area is home to a wide varietyofbutterflyspeciesaswell.

From Murrooughtoohy we rode through Fanore, past the Ballinalacken Castle and stopped in the town of Doolin at the Hotel Doolin so we could use the facilities.

From here we rode up to the Cliffs of Moher, named for a fort that once stood on Hags Head,

the southern most point of the cliffs.

The windy, twisty little road that takes you to the cliffs is an amazing ride. You can see the OBrian Tower long before you get close to it.The cliffs are impressive and are better known than the Slieve League Cliffs, but they arent as high!

Located on the southwestern edge of the Burren region of County Clare, the cliffs are 120 meters high at Hags Head. 8 Kilometers to the North, the reach their highest point ate 214 meters high.

By comparison, the Slieve League Cliffs are 601 meters high!

30,000 plus birds representing some 20 speciesincludingpuffins, gulls, ravens and hawks call the Cliffs of Moher home.

When we got to the cliffs the visitor centre was closed, but I found it

rather wonderful that the center is built into the hills so as not to detract from the landscape.Continued Next Page...

They have incredibly helpful staff and the hotel is well appointed.

Once we got checked in, we

all headed off to our rooms with the promise of meeting up in the pub for a beverage before going for supper.

    The rooms were MAGNIFICENT.

A wonderful deep tub, two beds, a desk, TV and tons of instant coffee and tea and the most

delicious cup cakes I have ever eaten.

Everyones gear was wet and the gal at the front desk took it all to the laundry to be dried for us.

Doolin to DingleStephanie and I met up in the hallway and took the elevator downstairs. After dropping off our wet gear at the front desk, we wandered past the dining room where a young gal was playing the harp, through the gift shop and tourism information area and down to the pub.

After a beverage there it was decided that we should walk up the street to McGanns pub.

The atmosphere was warm and the place was full. There was a jam session taking place and Joe jumped in to do some singing.

The food was fantastic - I am sure by now you are sick of

hearing the same terms to describe the food here, but truly the entire trip we had nothing but fabulous meals.

It was wonderful, truly wonderful to eat food that tasted like what it was. You know what I mean, you orderdeepfriedchickenbutittasteslikefishbecause its all fried in the same oil or the blandness of the vegetables.

    HereinIrelandthefoodisflavourful,eatingislike

having a party in your mouth. Its exciting and rewarding.

The quality and consistency of quality of the foods here in Ireland remind me of the phenomenal food experiences of Quebec.

I had the ribs, and they fell off the bone. Utterly delightful they were!

Paul and Siobhan were departing for Dublin in the morning, Joe, Stephanie and I would

be heading for Dingle, I stayed up as late as I could, but I was exhausted and had one too many glasses of wine Three to be exact.

I needed to hit the hay, so I said my good nights and wandered back to the hotel.

When I got into the room I decided I would try the seaweed bath that was in the bathroom. It was 10 Euros that they would add to your bill if you used it.

According to the package, seaweed restores moisture to your skin and is very soothing. The hand harvested, organic seaweed bath blend at the hotel was combined with sea salt and is made by a company called Voya.

For me it turned out to be a disaster. Who would have ever thought I would be allergic to seaweed, but apparently I am!

By 2 in the morning I was covered head to toe in hives and having a hard time breathing.

IrummagedthroughmyfirstaidekituntilIfoundsome Benadryl and headed for the shower.By 6 am I was feeling much better but I was wiped out.

At 9 am, after a fabulous breakfast of eggs benny, we got on the bikes and headed out to get fuel and say our good byes.

Our trio would be catching the Shannon Ferry and heading towards Dingle and our accommodations for the evening the Pax Guest House B & B.

This was a glorious day to ride, the weather was fair, we had more blue sky than overcast and there was hardly a breeze.

We boarded the Shannon Ferry at Killimer, Kilrush in County Clare.

Conor Pass and into DingleI met some young school boys who wanted to chat with me about the bike I was riding. They were so into motorcycles and I was thrilled to catch some of

their enthusiasm because I was dragging my arse.

The ride to Dingle took us past Listowel and Tralee and before we knew it we were

    riding the Conor Pass.

Stunning, gorgeous, ancient, magnificent, theseand a 100 other words can be used to describe this part of Ireland.

At the base of the steepest and narrowest incline in the pass is a gorgeous waterfall.

At the top of the narrowest point is a pull out with incredible panoramas.

I might have been tired but I was now fully

    exhilarated.

The weather was great, the temperature perfect and the riding was heavenly.

I had caught my second wind and was ready to ride!

I rode to the top, then back down and up again, it was that much fun to do and I wanted to ensure I had good footage of the ride.

Far too soon we were at the Pax House B & B on the edge of Dingle. I could have ridden that pass a couple of more times!

We checked in to our rooms and then immediately went and checked out the rest of this

Pax Guest House B & Bstunningly beautiful place.

The host of the Pax Guest House B & B is a man named John. He is a very engaging character with a sharp wit and a winsome smile. The Pax House is 110 yrs old. It has always been a guest house,

and has evolved over time into the impressive home it is today.

We headed for our rooms and unpacked the bikes.

The rooms are spacious, comfortable, well appointed and nicely decorated. Each with a private bath and heating bars for the towels! A good sized TV, a desk, lots of outlets for charging cameras and a coffee pot with instant coffee, creamer etc and a kettle - I was one happy girl!

John served us cof-fee out on the back deck and while we took in the amazing view, Stephanie and I made a friend in Johns dog, Jazzy.

    This place is truly magical.

The view is the most impressive of any of the B & Bs or hotels we stayed in during our entire stay.

There are boat tours available to go see the abandoned village, you can camp over night too.

After our ride we stopped at a little shop and I picked up some bread, Camembert and some pate - I was so

tired, I was not going out anywhere.

Joe and Stephanie went out to the Half Door for supper and then stopped in at some of the local pubs and one of the churches. They had a blast from what they told me.

I had my supper of pate, cheese and bread with instant coffee out on the deck.

I spent some time watching the sunset and the boats coming in and then sawed logs for the rest of the night. I was in bed and asleep by 8pm!

The next morning I felt alive and refreshed and after the gourmet breakfast that was cooked by John and delivered by Michelle, well I was all hopped up and ready to ride. The sun was out, it was a glorious 60 degrees as we headed out at about 8:30 am.

    Do Loud Pipes Save Lives?

As we begin the new year and the annual Vancouver Motorcycle Show kicks into high gear this week, riders are thinking about

the upcoming season and the wallets are about to open, very wide.

Ive already spoken with a few folks that will be coming to the show and already have their shopping lists prepared, which for a couple folks, includes new stage one pipes. And having been a big supporter of loud pipes, I have to ask the question, Do loud pipes save lives?

Oddly enough, there are more than a few riders I have met who emphatically say that is an erroneous and untrue statement, while others will vehemently say the opposite. Probably the vast majority of riders. So folks, which is it?

I cannot count the number of times I found myself inacagesblindspot(incitytrafficwherepeopleswitch lanes with regularity and often without a shoulder check or signal) and then by throttling while my clutch was engaged as I approached said vehicle to pass, I could see that Id caught the drivers attention.

And how many times have I experienced riding in a group (with loud pipes) on the highway where cagesandtrucksareweavinginandoutoftrafficand changing lanes like they are on a speedway,

and the roar of the bikes has caught their attention so that for the most part, they move into a lane and stay there, while the bikes pass or move in unison to a desired position in a particular lane.

Of course there are always the cage drivers with biker envy who want to control something, anything so they will be the exception and purposely try to create chaos on the road and ignore the bikes and show no respect while creating potentially dangerous situations. But, for the most part I have seenthatloudpipesdefinitelydoalertcagedrivers(and lets not forget other bikers too) of our nearby presence.

Faith & Motorcycles The jury is out as to the fact just how many accidents are prevented and how many lives are saved because of loud pipes, but just as seat belts save lives for cage drivers, I believe many lives are saved because of loud pipes and I for one will ring the bell in praise of loud pipes whenever I get the chance.

Weve been looking at how loud pipes save lives, but consider for a moment the fact that as we travelonlifesspiritualjourneys, whenwefindJesus Christ well experience a life change that is far more spectacular and miraculous which is a conversion.

In our Owners Manual for Life, we read:2 Corinthians 5:17 This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person.

The old life is gone; a new life has begun!

When a born-again believer has been saved, their life is forever changed. Both here in this life, on earthand in the future eternity in heaven, where we will be in the presence of Almighty God.

Good Morning Industry Associates & Media Partners:

I am sending this message on behalf of a long time colleague and friend (a term I dont use loosely), Ms. Marilyn Stemp.

As you may or may not be aware, Ironworks Magazine will soon be closed for business. Marilyn being a person of impeccable integrity, has issued the following statement to insure all of her customers and fans, both advertisers and readers are aware of the situation.

Below, aside from the Ironworks information, you will see the new logo of Iron Trader News. The fact is, Iron Trader News is the original title that started the entire company and as she says, predates Ironworks. So, take a ride back to a publication of old school, grass roots values by visiting the web site and Facebook page listed below.

Readers of IronWorks and Motorcycle Industry Friends,

It is with some sadness that I write to inform you that Hatton Brown, the publisher of IronWorks, has decided to cease publication of the title after 24 years, effective with the March 2014 issue. Some of you may have learned this news as it was leaked and I apologize if thats the case. Its not what I would have chosen.

As much as this represents the end of an era for the IronWorkers, it also presents an opportunity forustoexpressgratitudeforthefulfillingworkwe so enjoyed and the great times spent among you, our friends in motorcycling. You allowed us to tell your stories, showcase your craftsmanship and peek behind the counters in your shops. I speak for the entire staff when I thank you for the many entertaining and enriching experiences IronWorks enabled.

That said, I do regret not being able to follow through on some editorial plans. Were doing our besttofindplacementsforpromisedarticlesthatremain unpublished at this time.

The Edmonton Motorcycle show - the Farewell Tour for Laurie Paetz and her show management team.

I attended the Edmonton Motorcycle Show on Friday, January 17th,2014.Iwastheretofilmforourcommunity TV show on Eastlink TV called Ride Like Local. Although I have a booth at all three western shows, volunteers from various riding clubs or motorcycle events have been running them for me.

Its a great thing for the clubs and events as they get to promote themselves and I dont have to be away from home right now.

I had contacted Laurie Paetz, the show manager for all three Western shows about doing some interviews and she and her team had a great line up of people for me. I got the interview Ethan Barkley, Jordan Szoke, some of the Evolution of Extreme team and of course Laurie herself.

This was going to be a really hard interview. After 10 years of running the Motorcycle Shows Laurie and her team will not be the management team in 2015. The manufacturers who own this show

formedaforprofitcompany,PowerSportServicesthat is now ready to take over the management of their own show.

During the interview with Laurie we talked about the 10 years of shows and how hard it was to say good-bye.

She, and her team, works for the National Sportsmens Shows and the core group have been together a long time.

Over the 10 years of doing the Edmonton and Calgary Shows and the last two doing Vancouver, they have become good friends with much of the staff at the venues and with many of their exhibitors.

Laurie truly loves the motorcycle community and is going to miss being a part of the community.

She looks forward to whatever door opens next and

is always up for a challenge, but she confessed she has a soft spot for this set of shows.

I personally want to take a moment to thank Laurie, Pam, Brittany, Jackie, Serah and Chantel.

These ladies work so hard to give the exhibitors a great experience for exposing their business to the consumer by offering the consumer a show that is action packed with quality attractions and exhibitors.

Its not an easy job, there are always challenges to face and this team of

strong, vibrant women has always risen to meet those challenges and kicked them straight in the butt!

It will be interesting to see whom the 2015 show master is and how the shift is going to go over.

I am sure, that no matter what, riders will come out in full force again, to assuage the PMS that January always brings.

Speaking of PMS Our Beat the PMS Blues Online Show N Shine is going well. We are getting some great entries and I am grateful to have my anti PMS prescriptionbeingfilled.Unlikemostofyou, myvisit to the bike show in Edmonton did not give me a whole lot of time to see the new models or to spend

I have been told to take a vacation, to treat myself, to put it into my bike to freshen it up or into the business for new equipment etc. and while all those things are surely something I could use, I want any excess funds to go into a community project that will help people. With the anguish that has been caused in the Salmon Arm/Sicamous regions of BC over Sturgis North, I think it would be fabulous for the biking community to help heal some wounds there.

If anyone has ideas on a community project we could throw support behind in Salmon Arm and or Sicamous let me know.

Thank you again for all of the support that has been shown to me and our little newspaper.

Motorcycle Musings - your way...I know your way is far from mine..I know we have a place to get to...an idea in mind...a plan...And I need you to know I will see it through .. but in my Own time.. my Own way...We will reach the same objective..

youwilleitherjustgettherefirst&wait...Or stay with me & hopefully be content with that.If not... I know you don;t understand my reasoning... or what you consider lack of, at times...I know you don't think I maybe try hard enough, or push myself more sometimes, either. But have you thought that I might see the things that you do not.. cannot.. or Will not...And therefore, act accordingly?I know there are certain things that we will likely never see eye to eye on.. things we both think ought to be handled in a certain way.. a way that is So not the other's...Perhaps that perspective will change. It's ok if it does. And also if it doesn't...because we are both right.. just as we are both wrong...

AndasIlearn&growmoreconfident,Iwilladaptto new challenges easier, although I feel quite comfortable now, where I am...And if you ride with me long enough, you too, will adapt to the way I be on the road...This is the nature of the beast...This is why riding is so Incredibly personal....in a group or alone.I appreciate your suggestions, as you have been on a bike far more than I have yet to hope for.Would I offer mine? Doubtful. Will you be annoyed when your suggestions are not followed?Maybe. Is there a chance you could learn from me?Possibly.Does it matter? Not as long as our personal safety.. nor that of anyone else's..is not compromised. And there are still smiles at the end of the day... :)Your way is just different from mine...later.. Full disclosure: the head instructor and owner, Dennis Bigras, and I used to work together until 2009 when we got laid off. He was a great instructor then, and we went on to do bigger and better things. For Dennis it was starting a motorcycle training school in Strathmore. When I took my training it was great, but driving in the big city of Calgary is scary sometimes even when youre in a cage. My sweetie Patti talked to Dennis, and I think she and her friends are going to be getting their own licenses this summer.

    The calgary bike Show

Middle Age: That period when a man begins to shed his hair, his teeth, and his illusions.

    --Anonymous

Article by David PocockPhotos by Edmund KoelleWhile at the Calgary Motorcycle show I had the pleasure of talking with Brent Allanson, the Factory Representative for Indian Motorcycles, and here are the things Brent had to tell us.

The Indian brand is now here to stay, no ifs, buts, or maybes about it. Polaris has invested 27 months in engineering and marketing to bring us a motorcycle that they believe stays true to the original image that the name Indian Motorcycle brings with it. One of the telling comments Brent made, Polaris/Indian decided that the latest Indian WILL be affordable, it was thought that the latest ones, prior to Polaris taking stewardship of the name, were too expensive.

That being said, they started with a clean sheet and designed the 111 Thunder Stroke engine to look liketheoriginal, inhowthecoolingfins, exhaustpipes and all the other elements work together. However, under that exterior, is a power plant that, from 111 cubic inches (1819 cc for our metric reader), produces 119.2 Ft/Lb Torque at 3000 RPM, all of which means there is about 92.3 HP, which will move the 800 lb (356 Kg) plus bike with very quick response to the throttle. If youre wondering how long the legs on these bike are, think that you will get about 300 km per tank full of go juice. The

ABS brakes have 4 cylinder dual disc brakes on the front wheel and a single disc on the rear, to bring this road burner to a safe and controlled stop. There is cruise control for the long trip to ease the strainonthewrists, andfingertipcontrolsforalltheother usual, all mounted on 1-1/4 handle bars with all the wires safely tucked inside the bars.

Speaking of the motorcycle itself, the basic platform is called the Chief and comes in three levels of trim, which all share the same three colours, Indian MotorcycleRed,SpringfieldBlueandThunderBlack.

The other common equipment all share; Cast aluminum frame, Light bar, ABS brakes, Keyless start, Cruise control, leather seats, Floor boards, and a 5.5 US gal (21 litre) fuel tank.

The Classic is the no frills base model, no windshield, no saddle bags, pretty much the basic for the rider using it for basic riding. When you look at this bike and at the 1948 Chief you can see the lineage, the front and rear fenders are Valanced, the light bar still has the auxiliary driving lights outboard and level with the head light. The engine stillstandsoutwithitsboldfinsanddownward

AB Events Brent Allanson, the District Retail Manager with Polaris for Indian and Victory motorcycles talked with us about the where and who market for these bikes is.

Polaris feels that the markets for these two bikes has very little overlap. The Indian will appeal to the older rider in the 50 years plus range,

Facing noise bylaws that single out motorcycles?

Contact M.O.D.E.L. for assistance no matter what province in

    Canada you live in! www.modeledmonton.com

while the Victory is the renegade brand for the slightly younger folk, 10 -15 years younger, who are looking for a techno cruiser.

While both bikes have seen great advances in technology the Victory has the more modern lines that they feel will appeal to the younger more adventure styled rider, and so far the sales numbers are backing them up. Across all their motorcycle brands the Victory brand Cross Country Tour and High Ball were the top sellers.

For 2012 Polaris International sales were $3.2 Billion... Yes, with a B and they fully expect the 2013 numbers to be even larger due in part to the expanding cruiser markets.

ride for dad - Thoughts to PonderWork for Prostate

    cancer IN your community.

    by David Pocock

At the Calgary Bike show I sat with Steve Adar the Co-chair, with Ron Parkinson, of the

Ride for Dad, we talked about the Ride for Dad and what and where the funds raised were used for.

    Alittlehistoryfirst:

The Ride for Dad has been going for 13 years.

There are 33 Ride for Dad chapters. The Ride for Dad now has events happening

on ATVs, Snow machines and last year the firstRide For Dad event on water-craft was held in Kelowna B.C.

Each year has seen a steady increase not only in rider-ship but female rider-ship.

With very few exceptions, all of the money raised by a Ride for Dad stays in the community the ride was in, the only exceptions are the smaller centres which pool their contributions and share in their area. This can not be said by any of the other Prostate cancer awareness events. In Calgary, the funds go to The Prostate Cancer Centre. The 2014 ride donated $70,000 to Dr. Eric Hyndman for research into early detection. Funding for the Man Van, a mobile screening and information centre, which is also funded by Telus and Suncor. As side note here, at the Calgary Motorcycle show they processed 250 men for PSAs at the Man Van.

So typically how do you get to do a Ride for Dad? I am glad you asked, I had wondered about that

myself. Go to www.ridefordad.ca and follow the prompts. The cost is $30.00 per participating person, rider or passenger. There is a suggested fundraising goal and from there on you provide your details and electronically sign the waiver and make your payment. The process for signing up on-site is not that much different, just all in person. If you are not sure where or when the nearest ride is the information is available on the website. In Calgary the ride is on 14th of June and starts at 9 am. The startfinishisattheDeerfootMall.Lastyeartherewere 675 riders and they brought in a total of $109,000, not bad for a bunch of folk out for a good ride! If you want to talk with the organiser for Ride for Dad in your area the information is listed on the website.

So why is this all happening?

Men over 50 are more prone to this disease.

Man who ride, motorbikes, bicycles, horses or drive long periods at a time are more prone.

    In Canada

1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with Prostate cancer.

8 men a day will die of, or complications from, Prostate cancer.

    The Male Fairy Story

Once upon a time, a Prince asked a beautiful Princess, Will you marry me?

The Princess said, No!!! And the Prince lived happily ever after.

He rode motorcycles and banged skinny long-legged big-titted women and hunted and fishedand raced carsandwent to stripbars and dated women half his age and drank whisky, beer and Captain Morgans and never heard bitching and never paid child support or alimony and kept his house and golf clubs and ate spam and chips and beans and blew enormous farts and never got cheated on while he was at work and all his friends and family thought he was cool and he had tons of money in the bank and, he left the toilet seat up.

    The End

    The question of the year!!!!??

We are always hearing about how OLD AGE PENSION is going to run out of money.

How come we never hear about Welfare running out of money?

    Whatsinteresting,thefirstgroupworkedfortheir money... the second didnt!!

    The Deadly Three

It seems like every time change in the Motorcycle Community of Saskatchewan is discussed, either online or over coffee, people get caught on The Deadly Three. A discussion can start off about rates, safety, or even about the different rides in the spring, and then it will eventually evolve to one of these. The Deadly Three:

    Helmets making full-face helmets mandatory

    Gear makingspecificgearmandatorylikefluorescentvests

Telematics Devices yes, those little black boxes

I refer to these as the Deadly Three because to the average person they give the appearance of making us safer when really they dont. We, those who ride, know just how little any of these three do to keep us safer from poor road conditions and other drivers who do not pay attention, are constantly distracted and in too much of a rush to give the right of way to a vehicle they believe can drive on the shoulder of the highway.

Of the 17 different options in the Motorcycle Review Survey last summer these three were the ones that got the most airtime and caused the most

controversy. Heck when the survey was released a journalist in Germany was even talking about how the State of Saskatchewan was bringing in mandatory gear and full-face helmets.

What does this tell us, the Riding Community of Saskatchewan? Well, for me, it screams that wed betterbepreparedtofighthardforourrightsoncethe recommendations from that survey are released to the Legislature. After all, the Ministers and MLAs will ultimately decide what should be implemented. Otherwise these Deadly Three may be what we get. If we sit and say nothing about our rights, then by default we leave the decision to the media and the government. Last time all they talked about were these Deadly Three. Why would this time be any different?

R.A.G.E.formedforthesolepurposeoffightingfor our rights. To let the motorcycle community of Saskatchewan know what was happening. So we wouldnt be caught off-guard again, so wed wake up and notice every time a change was being made toourrights.Sowedbeabletofightbeforethechange took place, for our rights. R.A.G.E. comes to our rights with SGI and the Government is just that, a political process. This means that we can very effectively ensure our rights are not taken away in the process.

It means paying attention, acting together, taking action, listening and following Calls To Action. Then calling, writing, emailing, and showing up in personBEFOREfinaldecisionsaremade.

R.A.G.E. has been paying close attention. Very close attention, because change is coming.

    bad Uncle MonkeyStarting a

new project is an exciting time. I want to tear into the project reducing it to a pile of parts. Progress measure

by what is left bolt together. Its a trying time this is the time when most mistakes are made. Parts get throw together, dropped and misplaced. Mental notes are made only to be forgotten days, weeks, months down the road when it is time to put it all back together. That is when you realize this partneededtobefixed, thatonereplaced, somechromed, some painted. It all adds to the overall cost.

Ive done enough bikes that it really doesnt take that long to tear a bike down but slowing down and beingmeticulousiswhatittakestogetthefinishedbike to next level. Throw in the fact that I often get

carried away and forget to pick up a camera once and awhile for info and for possible article ideas and it pays to be patient. As I spin the wrenches on the King, nuts and bolts for each assembly go into a separate zip lock bag along with any notes necessary. Long bolt here, spacer there makes a world of difference when it comes time to bolt it back together. I also have several clipboards with note pads for important notes. One each for parts that need to be repaired, which need to be replaced, what will be painted and plated along with a detail list of how the bike is coming apart so when the time comes to put it all back together I just work from the bottom of the list up. I admit more then

once Ive bolted together a Softail only to realize I forgot to put the belt on.

The same attention to detail can be said about my other project - restoring my uncles South Bend 9C lathe. Id love to rip it open but I have to bide my time, figureoutwhatiswornout, whatwillneedto be replaced. I could make lots of parts for it on it but the tolerances just wont be there until I spend some money. I have to check, double check and triple check tolerances before I take it apart otherwise Ill be chasing my tail around wasting time and money.

Projects like these are prefect times to slow life down. Marvel at the ingenuity behind the parts that combine into great things, how everything interacts. Pour a Jack&Coke and step back. Life comes and goes a million miles an hour but taking the time now maymeanthat, whenfinished, thatprojectwilllastlong after we are gone.

A patient going to a doctor for his first visit was asked, And whom did you consult before coming to me?

Only the village druggist, was the answer.

And what sort of foolish advice did that

Oh, replied his patient, with no malice aforethought, he told me to come and see you.

Chiller tek has left a new comment on your post To the bottom of the bucket list...Queensland & al...:

Im a recreational rider who lives in Sydney, NSW, Australia and thankfully not Queensland. The new VLAD laws are really anti association laws which have been sold by the media as anti bikie laws. Bikie gangs here have a really bad reputation due to the media so its no great surprise that most people are infavour of the anti bikie laws. Unfortunately 99% of those people have no idea what the laws are actually capable of. Under those same laws the government could suddenly use these laws to stop anyone group from gathering in numbers more than 3. So if one day they decided that the catholic church or Muslims were now an criminal organisation because they had committed crimes then they could quite easily be outlawed.

These laws have taken us back to the 1940s Nazi germany style.

With any luck these clowns will be voted out at the next election and order restored.

Im not planning on any rides in Queensland anytime soon and if I did theres no way in hell Id be ringing the cops to tell em where Im going and what Im doing.

This is utter madness and a knee jerk reaction. There are already laws in place to deal with criminals.Iftheycantfinethecriminalelements

under those laws then I suggest the police learn how to do there jobs instead of standing in the bushes with their speed guns booking people for doing 5km over the limit. Thats not policing thats revenue raising.

Please dont tar all of Australia with the same brush - they are a bit simple in Queensland.

Ride like a pro - abs: stop it nowby Jerry Motorman Palladino

At the present time, there is a new study being conducted on motorcycle crashes and their causes. The last time such a study was conducted was back in the late 70s, early 80s and is known as the Hurt Study; named after the recently departed Dr. Hurt. (Do a google search on the Hurt Study, its a very interesting Read). While the new study has not been completed, some of its findingshavebeenreleased.Irecentlyreadthesection on ABS brakes. Just as I suspected, ABS is a life saver. Since so many crashes occur due to improper braking, i.e., the rider puts too much pressure on the rear brake and not enough or noneatallonthefrontbrake, thisfindingisnotasurprise to me.

Luckily, more and more manufacturers are offering ABS as an option, even on cruisers. Harleys entire line of touring bikes has the ABS option. Honda also offers ABS on their new Fury chopper and four of their 2010 cruiser models as well as just about all of their sport and sport touring motorcycles.BMW,thefirsttohaveABSonamotorcycle, has the option on its entire lineup.

Why is ABS so important? Thats simple. Anti-lock braking systems keep the tires from locking up. Since you only have two small contact patches and two wheels, if you lock them, youre going down. Since most motorcycle riders spend a lot

more time driving their four-wheeled vehicles and since theyre used to slamming on that brake pedal in a panic stop in the car, they tend to do the same thing on their bikes.

On the bike, when you slam on that brake pedal, youre braking only the rear tire---consequently, the rear tire locks and the rider slides onto the ground. Even if the rear tire doesnt lock, the rear brake only gives you 20% of your stopping force. Thats why you should of course, use both brakes. Sounds simple, right? Unfortunately, since most riders rely on their instincts, which by the way are completely wrong when it comes to motorcycles in a panic, they lock that rear brake every single time.

By now you must be saying, what am I supposed to do if I cant afford to buy a new bike with ABS? What am I supposed to do, quit riding? Ok, simmer down now. Heres what you can do and it wont cost you a cent. PRACTICE stopping and DO IT NOW! Find an empty parking lot or a deserted road and practice stopping quickly from various speeds. Start at 20 mph and work your speed up in 5 mph increments. The idea is to be able to stop quickly without locking the tires. In 15 or 20 minutes, you can improve your braking ability tremendously.

Now that youve got your straight line braking down pat, lets try swerving, then braking. Remember, you cant do both at the same time.

All you need to do is get up to 20 or 30 mph and start weaving back and forth. At some point, straighten up the bike and apply both brakes. You must straighten up the bike before applying the brakes and dont forget to downshift. Last but not least, lets try braking in a curve. Again, get up to 20 mph and start turning a big circle at least 100 in diameter---then, straighten up the bike and stop quickly. This skill will come in very handy on a winding road when you come around a turn and suddenlyfindanobstacleblockingyourway.

If your bike does have ABS, you still need to at least practice your swerves then braking and your braking in a curve since ABS can only be activated with the bike straight up. Thats because you cant press hard enough on the brakes to activate ABS when the bike is in a lean. Maximum braking can only be performed with the bike straight up, with or without ABS. Everything I just described can be done in 45 minutes to an hour of practice. If you practice just one hour a month, your chances of avoiding a crash will greatly improve.

Now, for those of you in the frozen part of the Country whose riding season is still a couple of months away---how about getting that bike completely detailed and looking better than new? Heres a product I recently tried. Its called Chrome-It Super Polish. Chrome-It is a liquid that works on chrome, aluminum, brass, stainless steel and even plastic headlight covers. It works in half the time and with half the effort of anything else Ive ever tried. An 8oz. bottle will set you back $15.00 or $25.00 for a 16oz. bottle. To get yourself a bottle, call Wes at 352-279-9556 or www.chromeit.us Tell them Motorman sent ya.

Until next month, get out there and PRACTICE

RR by Stephanie Arnold-Coffin When BDBetty called to invite me to Ride Ireland with her I was a bit hesitant. See I would be leaving for Newfoundland in less than 36 hours and had no idea what this trip to Ireland would involve.

ThefirstthingwediscussedwaswhatIwouldberiding. Being a new rider I needed to be sure I could be comfortable enough to last 10 days on a bike I had never rode before. After BDBetty gave me more information on what I needed to bring with me and what we were to experience, I agreed to go and was already getting excited.

I hung up the phone and tried to get my head back to the task at hand, laying out the paper before leavingforCalgaryTuesdaymorning.Ifinishedthe paper Monday night and sent it for editing, thencamethetaskofpacking.Ineededtofinishpacking for my 3 week Newfoundland trip, and pack for Ireland because once I landed back in Calgary from Newfoundland I would have to drive to my friendKimshouseinRedDeerfixanycorrectionsthat needed to be made to the paper, load it to the server, pick up my Ireland luggage and drive to Edmonton for the night. It would be hectic but I was too excited to be stressed out about it all.

When I arrived in Newfoundland the helmet BDBetty had arranged for me to test while in Ireland was there waiting for me and it really hit home that I was going to Ride Ireland. It had always been a dream to visit Ireland. Being from Newfoundland I have always felt that Irish connection as do most Newfoundlanders, its part of our heritage and culture. This trip home was a great beginning to my Irish Experience I was able to spend time with my family and friends, cross the island, attend a wedding, taste some of the great food and listen to some fantastic traditional Irish music in an Irish pub. All of which got me more excited to go abroad, lets

say the last 2 days in Newfoundland I didnt sleep much.

Once I arrived back in Red Deer, I repacked, finishedlayingoutthepaperandthendroveto Edmonton for the night. I would be meeting BDBetty at the Edmonton airport at 4:30am to start our adventure.

new rider travel Feature - an irish experience

FromEdmontonweflewtoChicagoandthenontoDublin,Ireland.TheflightsweregreatandIdidmanage to get a couple hours sleep.

Once we arrived at our hotel and got settled in BDBetty & I crashed for a couple hours while we waited for Joe Walsh, our riding partner/tour guide, to arrive from Boston. We then headed into the city of Dublin to explore for the day. There was so much happening in this busy city and so much to see, our heads were on a swivel, I think we were afraid we would miss something.

We visited St. Peters Cathedral and Christ Church both were beautiful and the craftsmanship that went into the churches was amazing and if this was any indication of what we would experience throughout the trip, then we were in for a real treat.

WE had lunch at the Brazen Head Pub the oldest pubinIreland.ThisiswhereIenjoyedmyfirstGuinness and it complimented the Guinness Stew I ordered. The food throughout the entire trip was amazing as were the different kinds of beer I had tried, several of Joes recommendations hit the spot after a long day of riding.

We continued exploring Dublin for the afternoon and returned to the Brazen Head Pub for an evening of Irish Folklore and Storytelling and a delicious meal and returned to the hotel totally exhausted.

WE woke early and headed to the breakfast room forourfirstIrishBreakfastbuffetbeforeheadingtoCeltic Rider for our safety course and get ready to start our riding adventure. WE met Paul and Mick who got us set up with coffee, our riding gear, the BMW 650gs bikes we would be riding as well as our itineraries. It was a busy day at Celtic Rider for Paul and Mick as they were having a photo shoot for an Enterprise Award. All their hard work was starting to pay off. The company Paul has built has truly captured a niche market. Paul and Mick have touched every aspect of each tour they have developed, from choosing the routes that are loaded into the GPS for you, to personally selecting the B&Bs or hotels you stay in, as well as recommending places to stop along the way for fantastic photo opportunities and tourist attractions.
