An organization’s workplace strategy is about more than just the physical environment.

“Integrating cultural, procedural and behavioral factors such as wellness, social and environmental stewardship, enhance the employee experience,” said Cynthia Milota, director of workplace strategy at Ware Malcomb. “Training and workforce development also contribute to the overall em-ployee experience.”

Milota joined Ware Malcomb last month and leads the company’s Work-place Strategy and Change Management consulting services for clients nationally. Ware Malcomb’s strategy and design teams work together with clients to create agile, human-centric, high-performance work environ-ments specifically designed to maximize the workplace as a competitive advantage. The teams work with a wide range of clients to formulate their unique objectives, including employee wellness, social responsibility, tal-ent strategy, the workforce ecosystem and measures for success. Milota’s scope of work for her team spans pre-lease, data-driven decision making and robust change communications plans to multiple workplace perfor-mance assessments.

At its core, the employee experience encompasses one’s personal connec-tion to the organization, manifested through all the touch points, Milota explained.

“We refer to these touch points as ‘moments that matter,’ a new paradigm in talent management,” she said. “These moments collide in three dimen-sions: physical (the space), human (the people) and digital (the technol-ogy).”

Milota, who is based out of Ware Malcomb’s Oak Brook, Illinois, office, said face-to-face experiences are in high demand, even for an increasingly mobile workforce. When teams are in the office, measures for success are essential — understanding they will be subjective (perception is reality), context driven (what is this data telling us) and dynamic (people’s feelings change from day to day).

“As we understand from lessons in the consumer research space, it’s not one and done,” Milota said. “Products and workplaces are re-imagined and re-invented to best support the user and employee experience.”

From a leadership perspective, Milota believes aligning a work environ-ment to accomplish business objectives comes down to employee experi-ence. “An engaged, delighted staff equates to a productive workforce,” she said, adding the office environment is just one element in that equation. Organizational culture and technology resources are key elements that also impact successful business outcomes. The emergence of abundant data — quantitative data which shows the “what” and qualitative data which shows the “why” — is critical in decision making to provide a posi-tive employee experience and successful work environment, Milota said.

Before Ware Malcomb, Milota was the workplace strategist for a global financial services firm. It occupied millions of square feet and consumed vast amounts of architecture and design services. Her takeaway from that

experience are five key service delivery methods used to enhance Ware Malcomb’s workplace strategy practice:

Integrate strategy services with the design team for seamless delivery.Customize research methods to client requirements.Create actionable reports with goals that are achievable within a project’s

budget and schedule.Approach each project with no preconceived outcomes.Uphold an unbiased perspective.“Recent changes in the industry,” Milota said, “are sparked by the avail-

ability of good data and strategic consulting services accessible for all cli-ents, not only the large corporate customer.” BoF
