1 PRINCIPAL’S PROSE ART SHOW The Art Show turned out to be a very enjoyable evening. The weather was perfect for the evening. I want to thank everyone involved. It was a case of everyone pulling together that made the event so successful. First, and foremost, I want to thank the students for producing such wonderful art. The teachers did an outstanding job in guiding these lessons and in presenting their work. We received such wonderful feedback about the Art Show from so many parents. Thanks to the parent volunteers on the night who delivered the sausage sizzle, tea and coffee for 1000 participants – a great performance. The office staff volunteered their time to collect all the payments on the night. Berowra Rotary lent us their Art Display panels. We collected and spent a good deal of money on the Art Show and it was all worthwhile. We hired an artist for four days to hang the show and to help disassemble it. We rented most of the Art Stands from Hornsby Council. We hired a delivery firm to pick up and return the Art Stands and the Art Panels. We bought a lot of canvases, frames, boxes, speciality paper and speciality paints. We paid for the sausages, tea, coffee, bread, etc, for the BBQ. If you did not get a chance to contribute you still can and the art works are being sent home this week. They will become treasured mementos for many families. ATHLETICS CARNIVAL We are holding the annual Athletics Carnival on Monday at Bannockburn Oval. Miss Wilcock is the organiser of the event. Please be on time. All of Years 36 students will be going and some Year 2 students. See Mrs Hibbert’s column for more details. PRINCIPAL’S PROSE Continued/…  The site includes commentary from experts and identities, including the Bell Shakespeare Company's John Bell, maths guru Adam Spencer and personal trainer Michelle Bridges. Asquith Public School Assistant Principal, Elizabeth Vincent, who was involved in the development of the site, said School A to Z would be a useful tool for parents. The Federation of Parents and Citizens' Association NSW president, Helen Walton, said: "What I really like about School A to Z is that it supports parents getting involved in their child's education and it gives them tools to do just that." Visit http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/                                              GIRLS AND MATHS The teachers had an interesting discussion about girls and maths on Tuesday. We have regular topic meetings as part of our professional development activity. The participation of girls on higher level mathematics has increased greatly since the 1980’s and continues to improve. Many girls achieve great results but there is still room for improvement. More boys that girls take the hardest mathematics course at the HSC level. More boys than girls go onto careers that require high level mathematics. Attitudes and beliefs people have about boys and girls are important in ensuring all children and young people have the choice and support to achieve. Expecting both boys and girls to have talents, skills and interests in non‐traditional roles is part of this picture. Girls and boys need to believe they are capable of achieving great results in all subjects.  Ensuring girls know female role‐models in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics careers is important.  The performance of girls in maths here is very good but they make up a slightly lower proportion of the top group than we would expect. By focusing our attention to this issue I am sure we will make gains here.   NEW DEPUTY PRINCIPAL 2012  We have concluded the interviewing process for the vacant Deputy Principal position. Mrs Belinda Zorian was selected from a quality field. Mrs Zorian has been an assistant principal for 14 years and has excellent skills and qualifications, especially in the areas of gifted and talented students education and literacy. Mrs Zorian is currently at Lindfield East Public School. She will commence at the beginning of the new school year. We do this so we do not interrupt the learning for her class or another class here. I want to thank Mrs Hibbert for her excellent work in the position for the past twelve months. She continues to do a

great job as the relieving Deputy Principal and my right hand. The teachers have greatly appreciated her guidance,

corporate knowledge and leadership in ensuring the school’s programs could continue as smoothly as possible.

YEAR 6 YEAR BOOK As a final testament to seven great years of schooling, year six students have been creating and producing a year‐book.  We are looking for parents or friends of the school who have a connection with a printing business to help us print our yearbook and create this great memory. If you are able to help us out or know someone who may, can you please send an email to Mr Aghion at [email protected]

THE GOLDEN TREASURE   Once upon a time there was a pirate called Blackbeard. He lived on a ship called the Jolly Roger. He and his crew were trying to find some treasure. They sailed the seven seas and went to every island they could see but the treasure was not there. One day the lookout saw an island that no pirate crew had been to. It was called Skull Island. To get to it they needed to cross some sharp rocks. They went left and right and suddenly they saw a rock right in front of them. They just made it through and then turned and sailed straight to Skull Island. However when one of the crew looked behind, he saw another pirate ship called the Buccaneer. They were not scared so they kept on sailing but when they got to the island The Buccaneer had come closer. They split up into five groups. It was a very big island. Blackbeard had a map of the island and following this closely they suddenly saw the treasure. It was on the highest mountain. Suddenly the enemy crew caught up. The only thing they could do was to fight. Blackbeard sneaked out of the fight and began to climb the mountain. When he reached the top, the other captain had arrived. They fought but Black‐beard won, so he got to keep the treasure and live happily ever after.

COMING EVENT ‐ CHILDREN’S BOOK WEEK This year’s  Australia wide Book Week celebration takes place between 20th and 26th August. The theme is:    One World, Many Stories  (a wonderfully appropriate theme for our lovely multicultural school).  The Children’s Book Council  was established in 1945.  It was set up to encourage Australian authors and illustrators, and also Australian publishers at that time, to create books of high quality for Australian children.  It has been re‐markably successful.  The range of glorious and diverse books by Australians has expanded beyond belief.  We have much to thank the initiative and dedication of those who originated this.  As usual, Mrs McGrath and I are introducing the books chosen as the best Australian titles produced in the previous 12 months.  A total of  462  books were read by the judges (one from each Australian state). These will be on display in the library during Book Week before and after school on Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th of Book Week.    The children will  also be making their own judgments  about the books and we wait with interest to see how our choices compare with those made by  the official judges.  We are having  performers  come to entertain and encourage the children in their reading.  These will be: Friday 19 th for Years 3, 4, 5 and 6:  A visit by Susanne Gervay,  author of  “ I am Jack”.,   This book and its sequels are top favourites in our library. Tuesday 23 August for Years 1 and 2:   A presentation by Richard Bradshaw and his Shadow Theatre Tuesday 30 August for Kindergarten:    Story teller Bronwyn Vaughan  presenting At the Foot of the Storytellers’s Chair.  Because of the timing of the Art Show and School Fete  we are not having our fabulous Book Fair. This is a disappoint‐ment to many children, and a sad loss to the quantity and quality of resources you have so generously contributed in previous years, every one of which we valued and needed.  However, in response to  the children’s comments, we are having a Mini Fair.  That is, we will have available a choice of books  costing between $10 and $20, which will be on sale in the library 8.45 to 9.15 and 3.15 to 3.30 on the days of Wednesday  24th and  Thursday   25th of Book Week. The usual book plate with the name of the donating child/children will be put in the book and they will be able to borrow it first.  We would like also, if you can help us in this, to have a display of the small figures  (dolls) ,dressed in the national cos‐tume of other countries,  to link in with the theme One World,  Many Countries.  These would be put on display with books from other countries also.  We also have a small number of books in two languages to display.   Please let the children know if they may bring such a treasure to school and ask them to tell us.  We think this would be interesting and great fun.

Crys Mills and Trish McGrath, Teacher‐Librarian

P & C NEWS Well, we are now just over 2 weeks away from our Bush School Fair.

Your youngest child will be receiving your raffle tickets and also a form to pre‐purchase a wrist band for the rides on

Fair day this week.  Raffle tickets are $2 each and you will receive a book of 10 tickets. We welcome all siblings, those

who have not started school yet, and also those who are ex‐students, to also pre‐purchase the wrist bands and come

along and enjoy the day.  Friends and relatives can also pre‐purchase ride tickets to receive the discounted price.

There will also be a note coming home in the week of the Fair regarding the cake stall for Fair day.  This is being coor‐

tribute in both goods and dollars.  This is the only fundraiser that the P & C are doing this year and we encourage you

all to get behind it.  The group of parents who are helping to organise the Fair are doing an amazing job and they

need all of our support.

So far this year, the P & C have contributed money towards in‐Class readers, new library books, new mulch and a
