As we reach the end of this year, now is the perfect time to reflect on 2012 and start planning for the new year. We welcome 2013 as a year of possibility, a new beginning and a chance to start fresh. We tend to create resolutions that unfortunately, after a couple of weeks, don’t stick. This year, let’s try something new. Instead of creating a lengthy list of resolutions, reflect on how you want to feel in 2013 and set intentions instead. It will change everything! No one I know is genuinely motivated or inspired by their New Year’s resolutions. Yet, year after year, we make these promises to ourselves and get stressed out over keeping them. By setting intentions, we get to the source of what we truly want. Because intentions are not oriented toward a future outcome, it becomes deeper and more profound than meeting a goal. Living with intention is a path, a practice and a responsibility. My intention for this year is to be more creative. Creativity comes in all forms. Writing more, reading books or poems out of my typical genre, cooking a new recipe or starting a new craft project with my children. Pick an intention! I’d love to read what word you’ve chosen or are considering for 2013. Please send in your intention and how it has inspired you to make changes. Make 2013 the best year yet!

I write this letter at the end of a production marathon, culminating hundreds of hours of work by many, to share the voices of children. For me personally, my passion and intense drive to work insane hours to this end is my default. This labor of love has grown into a beautiful piece of magic that is lighting up the lives of many. I see it everyday. From the mom that squeals in excitement when I tell her that her daughter’s piece will be published, to our growing and loyal group of Bunk Roomies that come to our Friday night meetings to learn and experience publishing. That’s pure Love of Learning and I couldn’t be more proud to be part of that magic!

hat is lighting up the llives

Right now my life is pretty crazy! I’m at the end of my fall term

so I’m in the middle of writing a lot of pa-pers and finishing up projects. I’m feeling a little swamped. This is an exciting time for me though because by the time this issues gets released, I will be starting my last

term at Rasmussen College! I can’t believe I’m almost done! This week my family is going up to our cabin in Alabama for a couple days and I’m really excited about that. We’re bringing a couple of our friends with us, so I’m excited to show them around and just have fun, relax and release all the stress of school both mentally and physically. While continuing to be busy with school-

work and traveling, I’m also busy with orchestra and playing music. My siblings and I had a couple fun Christmas concerts and were invited to play a few string quartet gigs. While I am busy this time of year, I have to work very hard to keep my-self focused because it’s nearing the end of football season. I’m a huge fan of the Green Bay Packers and I’m really hoping that they get to the Super Bowl. I hope you enjoy this issue. We’re excited to see so many new writers find us every time we go to print. Also, make sure you vote for your favorite photo in our new Instagram Photo Contest. There are some amazing photographers out there! Make sure to follow us too so you can enter your masterpiece! Hope you enjoy this issue! Keep writing and snapping pictures!

Yes, because it is not good to lie, especially if someone finds out the truth later on.

Daija 12, Tavares, FL

That’s 50/50 because if you tell the truth then it could hurt someone’s feelings and it could also help.

Brooklyn 14, Tavares, FL

I think honesty is the best policy because if you’re honest, you get good luck, karma.

Thomas 12, Leesburg, FL

Yes, because if you're honest you will get farther in life and not be a failure.

Jeffery 11, Leesburg, FL

Yes, because you won't get in as much trouble. You can get caught in a lie.

Anthony 12, Tavares, FL

No, because there are reasons why you should lie. For example, if someone is trying to kidnap you or give you drugs.

Coltin 12, Mount Dora, FL

Honesty IS good but it isn't good if you hurt someone's feelings.

Megan 8, Concord, NC

Well, it’s definitely good to be over all honest, but if somebody doesn't need to know the truth to...and it would hurt them to, it MAY not be the best choice to tell them.

Heaven 12, Melbourne, FL

Honesty is the best policy unless it’s hurtful.

Annika 12, Mount Dora, FL

Yes.... even it’s a little white lie.

Juni 10, Palm Bay, FL

Sometimes to lie because I don't like to be mean.

Lily 11, Clermont, FL

No, because sometimes being honest is no fun at all (blame it on your little sister instead.) :)

Do girls look better with makeup on? Some girls look better with make up, but not caking their face in it.

Daija 12, Tavares, FL

I think girls look better with makeup because it looks better.

Lily 11, Clermont, FL

I think they look better without because it hides their inner beauty and also make up hurts your skin...

Brooklynn 14, Tavares, FL

I think both because God made girls beautiful without make-up. But girls do look pretty with it too ;)

Juni 10, Palm Bay, FL

Girls with makeup is better becauuuse... they require style

Thomas 12, Leesburg, FL

No, I don't think that girls look better with makeup because it's not their real self. Makeup covers up their real beauty.

Jeffery 11, Leesburg, FL

No, because putting on makeup is not their true skin. It's fake and I like girls to be "real.”

Coltin 12, Mount Dora, FL

Without! Because with makeup you can look ugly if you put on too much or too little.

Hannah 11, Tavares, FL

Girls look pretty without makeup, but if they just wear a little they look pretty too.

Megan 8, Concord, NC

It depends. Tasteful makeup is okay, but if you go overboard it’s yucky. Natural is always a safe and beautiful choice. For any girl. Because every girl’s beautiful.

Heaven 12, Melbourne, FL

Girls look pretty with makeup on, but just a little bit; not a huge dose.

Annika 12, Mount Dora, FL

Yes, because girls look prettier with it.

Longboarding can be very intense, but sometimes when you ride around aimlessly it can be very relaxing. Having the right equipment is essential for longboarding. This equipment includes a helmet, wrist guards, gloves, knee pads, elbow pads and leathers. There are a bunch of facts that you will learn from this article. I hope you enjoy. There were many people that contributed to the making of the first longboard. Their names are Tom Sims,

Lonnie Toft, and Willi Winkles. This first longboard was made out of a water ski and the inventors just put trucks and wheels on it and rode it around. There were a few types of skies that wouldn't work and it took them a while to find the

right kind of trucks. The way you longboard is you put

your left foot first (unless you are goofey-footed, then you put you right foot first), put your back foot off the board, push off the ground and PRESTO you’re longboarding! The sizes of a longboard vary on what you want. Say I have a 34" board, then I would use it for tricks, but if I have a 43" board then I would use it for going downhill. There are many different types of longboards. The Apex 40 Double

Concave, Freeride 41 Rocker Concave, Pintail 43 and many more. All of those boards are made by one company named Original. Original is a great company. I recommend them. Another company I would recommend is Sector 9. They have a large variety of longboards. These companies are unique in the that they put carbon fiber in their longboards.

Don't buy a used longboard. Those are always the worst in that they have rusty bearings and the board isn't always stable. One reason you should buy a longboard is because the are a great form of transportation, and they cost less than cars and motorcycles. Another reason why you should buy a longboard is because they can ride longer and faster than a regular skateboard, and you can do better tricks at faster speeds.

Have you ever been in a poster contest? Well, I have. This year in the Mount Dora Fire Department Poster Contest I drew a poster of a kid protecting his family from a fire monster.

My family and I got to go to a city council meeting at the Mount Dora City Hall to see how my poster placed. It turned out to be placed best out of all! I won a bike and a picture of me and my poster on the back of the fire inspector’s truck. It was so cool!

Then I thought about how I already had a bike and some kids don’t, so I asked the fire inspector if I could give my bike to Toys for Tots and get a ride on the fire truck instead. She said, “Yes!”

The day I rode on the fire truck, I woke up excited, got dressed and put on a

fluffy pink coat. It was one of the coldest days of winter. When I was on the fire truck I got to try out the walkie-talkie and when we went by my grandpa’s house, my grandpa waved at me. There were lots of lights and buttons.

When I got to school in the fire truck all my friends came out of chapel and saw me; even some of their moms. It was so exciting! So when you read this, think about entering a poster contest and think about other kids who don’t have the stuff you have. Maybe even give them a little something.

........................"Ryder! I'm not going to tell you again. Get up! The bell is gonna ring in 10 minutes!" says my dad on a typical weekday.

Just five more minutes..." would be a very likely response from me. I will admit, I am probably the

worst person to wake up in the entire world. But what can I

say? I'm a teenager!

So as my dad is yanking me out of my bed and leading me like a zombie into the shower, I stumble around for a bit then lie down and fall asleep in the nice, warm torrent of water.

Some people might find that a little strange, but who cares, I'm sleepy! Suddenly I'm shocked by a blast of intensely cold water as my mom reaches in and turns the hot faucet all the way off. I leap out, hastily covering myself with a towel, throw on some clothes and bound out the front door, only to hear Mom's loving reminder, "RYDER, COME BACK IN HERE AND GET YOUR BOOK BAG!"

I finally travel the five minutes to school, where I like all of my classes pretty well, but really enjoy AFJROTC. My goal is to attend the Air Force Academy, so I try to excel every day for my commanding officers.

Once school is out, I get to go to the illustrious Family Martial Arts Center in Mount Dora, where I'm greeted by grade school students whom I teach every day about discipline and respect. Of course I'm not complaining, but sometimes they can get a little . . . rowdy.

It is very rewarding for the most part, and I'm blessed to be able

to do it every day. It's pretty amazing to have a five year old want to be just like you.

Those are my weekdays, but the best days for me are Saturday and Sunday. Almost every weekend I go to Combat City in Orlando, FL where I can have airsoft battles with all my friends. (If you aren't aware, airsoft guns are replicas of real guns that shoot little plastic bb’s.) It's super fun, and you can shoot your friends and family, and not get in trouble for it! But in all seriousness, be safe and only use your rifles at the playing field, and never harm any animals with an airsoft gun.

Now you know a typical day in the life of Ryder. How does it compare to yours?

Zoom! Hold on! Here we go!

I clutch the reins and set up to let my horse go. The speed and adrenaline roar. He is ready to go and I am smiling waiting for the rush. Hi, I am Alexia; I am 10 years old and ride barrel horses.

I have two horses that compete and I love the sport. We go around the barrels as fast as we can to try to qualify for the fastest time in the divisions; usually a 4D, which means you can place in any of the Ds in the top six and win some money or prizes. I am still working on going as fast as I can. My main point horse is Doc Time Rebel and he is my best friend. I can tell him anything and he just shakes his head up and down to say, “Yes you can.”

Riding horses has been so much fun. I take them trail riding and to the beach. They seem to enjoy our outings because they always wait for me at the gate and say, “Let’s go Alexia, I want to ride.” I dress them up sometimes too. They wear my cowgirl hats or

a fancy scarf. Horses are a lot of work and time but I wouldn’t change a thing.

My day starts at five most mornings to feed them then off to school and it ends at 7 pm after I have ridden and fed them again. Sometimes later. I have to groom them and exercise them too. I unload 300 pounds of feed every two weeks and six bales of hay weekly. They have special diets that I fix in their feed buckets every day for both morning and night time

feedings. They get treats of carrots, sugar and they

love Gatorade in their water buckets. Their stalls are cleaned at least one time a day and their

water buckets are emptied and cleaned twice a day.

I love the barn work

but I am not crazy about

cleaning tack. I don’t

enjoy oiling my saddle or washing the splint boots but I do it because I have to keep it in good shape to last as long as it can. Horses are hard on their horse wear.

Barrel racing has taught me many things. For instance team work, completion rules and just plain values of right and wrong. I love everyone and I try to be everyone’s friend but there are mean people in the world just like there are mean horses in the world.

Last year I rode two horses for NBHA (National Barrel Horse Association) and qualified to go to Youth World in Perry, Georgia. I competed against 1,700 other youth riders and did real well. I didn’t make it to the finals but there is always next time. I was seven riders out the first day so I know I am close. I have qualified again this year to go next year. I can’t wait to go again. I really want to win a saddle or belt buckle. That is my goal.

Reining is an awesome sport because you get to hang out with horses and ride them. Reining is where you do a pattern of fast and slow circles, spins, roll backs and sliding stops on your horse. I have a horse named Portia and she loves to rein. Portia is only four years old.

My favorite part of reining is the sliding

stops. This is where you run from one end of

the arena and go as fast as

you can to the other end and then do a sliding stop. It’s both exciting to watch and exciting to do on your horse. The horses have special shoes that are really flat and smooth so they can do sliding stops. The horse has to be careful walking on cement because they could slip and fall. The horses have to have the right kind of training to slide.

Both the horse and the rider must train for many hours to become better at the sport. I train for at least 15 hours for my reining pattern that takes about three minutes at the show. Even though this is

work, I still have fun. I met new friends at the reining shows and at the barn where I train. They are fun to hang out with because they love horses too.

Hi, My name is Mandi. I play ukulele, piano and drums.I got to sing and play ukulele with Jamie Grace, the 2012

New Artist of the Year Dove Award winner and here's how.I started piano when I was six years old. I watched my mom

play the key board, and then asked her if she could teach me. At first my mom just showed me simple chords. Then when she was playing a rhythm with chords I copied her. She asked me who taught me how to play it and I said, “No one. I learned it from watching you.” My mom said after that I had a gift from God.

I played the piano for a few more years. Then I started the drums. After church I would get short

lessons from the church drummer. When I was 9 years old my mom showed me a video of a

little boy playing ukulele. After that video I was hooked on ukulele. My parents and I were looking for a ukulele for about a

month. We went to a couple of music stores until we found a ukulele. We didn’t get the ukulele right then. We went back the next week and got it. I was so excited I learned a song in the store and on the way home in the car. When I got home I played it nine hours straight. Since then I have been posting videos of me singing and playing instruments on YouTube.

In November of 2011 Jamie-Grace contacted me and asked me if she could meet me some day. There was a concert 4 hours away from us that she was in but we didn't know much about her then. We didn’t go. But last summer, we went to one of her concerts and it was loads of fun. When we got there at 3 pm, at first I only saw her silhouette because of the lighting in the room. Her silhouette had hair all on one side and I could see her guitar case. That moment almost seemed like a movie. We talked for 15 minutes and then we jammed for 15 minutes. She told me I

could watch her sound check. On the second song she called me up to the stage and invited me to sing with her. She told me what to do and we went through the song twice. Then she had an interview.

My little sister said she was hungry so we went out to get some food. We ate and when we went to go back in it was closer to show time and we got locked out. At the time I didn’t know whether I was singing or not. Just 30 minutes before the show, Jamie's manager texted my mom and asked where we were because I was going to sing with Jamie-Grace! When I went up on the stage, I couldn't see anyone in the crowd. I couldn't even make out my mom's face in the crowd. It seemed like a vast land of darkness. I came in during the middle of the song, after the bridge. When the crowd saw me, they went wild. But they didn't even know who I was. I don't think they were expecting a little girl to go on stage with Jamie-Grace.

When the soundtrack ended, Jamie-Grace kept playing her guitar and let me do a solo. After I sang she gave me a hug and I walked off the stage to enjoy more of her singing. Then she started introducing me to the crowd. I thought she was exaggerating a little about what she said, because she said that I was one of the best artists on YouTube! She also said that Toby Mac discovered me on YouTube and that is how she herself discovered me. When the concert was over, I got to meet Laura Story and Mandisa. I also got to see Jamie-Grace again before I went home and I got my ukulele signed by her. A few weeks later, Jamie-Grace posted on her YouTube channel the video of me singing backstage with her. I am still having fun reading the comments that people post about that video. I had fun singing with Jamie-Grace, but I am glad that I have friends who think I am just a normal girl, because I am.

I am writing this with a humble heart, so don't think I am bragging. It's such an awesome honor to have won the MVP (Most Valuable player) trophy this year. It's the trophy where your teammates vote. I am humbled to have won such a trophy. I thank all my teammates for voting for me. In soccer there are a few different trophies like the golden boot, and most improved which the coaches vote on. I think the MVP is

the greatest an individual player can receive. Not a lot of players even have one. I am thankful that God has given me this incredible talent. I don't take it for granted. I work very hard at my passion, maybe not at home, but on the pitch there is nothing more important than performing at 1000%. I think anyone who aspires to be good at something can do anything. I have won five MVP trophies over my soccer career. It's very rare to have won this many. Sure lots of people have tons of trophies that are maybe participation trophies, but this trophy is a trophy you have to work for. and only one person can win it. You as a person have to be willing to put forth everything in order to be the very best you can. I am still learning this as I grow.

I don't see what others see in me, so I am thankful and humble, because that's what my creator would do. Thank you God.

Hard Work Always Pays Off

By Taylor 12, Melbourne, FLWest Shore Junior/Senior High

What do you think of when you hear the word “love?” Do you think about hugs, kisses, dating, marriage, or things? The dictionary defines love as affection or concern, devotion to someone or something. You might say that it has something to do with a boyfriend or a girlfriend or a pet. Maybe you think about hugging a friend or a family member. How about a sick elderly person, or hugging a stranger? Would you do that? Why or why not? Do you think about dating when you think about love? Do you date because you want to feel accepted or loved? Do you do it to compete with others or because everyone else is doing it?

Some think of marriage when you talk about the word love. The big, big word marriage. When you get married, you make a promise,

a commitment to someone and say two very important words, “I do.” When you say those words do you mean them? Or is it a temporary thing until something better happens? Is marriage forever love? God wants you to say those words like you mean them, like you care. When you have fights with your husband or wife, God wants you to fight for them, not with them.

My family and I go to a little church that’s not a big dazzling building. We meet at a restaurant. Church isn’t about the building itself but what happens inside the building. Kind of like the “don’t judge a book by its’ cover” saying. It matters more about what’s inside than outside. True love doesn’t care about what you look like. When we make a commitment to God to follow Him it’s like we say, “I do” to God. God loves us more than anyone else in the whole world.

That’s what love is.

This year I decided to join the Mount Dora High School swim team; this is my first year enrolling in any sport for a high school team. Lots of my friends were involved in this sport, which is probably one of the main reasons I wanted to join this team. I thought to myself, it’s just splashing around in a pool, how hard could that possibly be?

So the first day of swim conditioning was one of the hardest. I was expecting it to be super easy because I thought I was a good swimmer before I joined. Sadly I thought wrong. After the first day of swimming it was so hard and made me so tired I really didn’t want to do it again. It was a lot of work but I decided to go the next day, and the next, and the next.

Being part of this team lived up to my expectations and then some. It was a lot of fun for my first year and a lot of work at the same time. One of the biggest challenges was probably doing all the different swims like the

200 IM which is two laps each of the following strokes: fly, back, breast, free. I had to swim this for my first time in one of the swim meets. I did a

lot better than I thought I would have done so I was

pleased with myself.

For future swimmers of a swim team all around the world, I suggest bring sunscreen and don’t sprint all your swims or you will feel sick afterward. Trust me I have tried.

Bikes Come Back To Life & Bring Smiles!

It’s Never Too Lake To Try a New Sport!

By Benjamin Slaby 14, Mount Dora, FLBunk Roomie A-Team / Homeschooled

The feeling of riding a bike is amazing. The wind in your hair, the adrenalin that is accumulated just makes a kid feel amazing. Unfortunately many families can’t afford a bike for their children. John Von Hartmann is bringing that to a halt with Second Cycle. Second Cycle is a non-profit organization in Lake County, FL, that takes old bikes and fixes them up and adopts them out to needy children and in some cases adults too.

Second Cycle has adopted out 33 bikes so far. A few bikes have been adopted by some adults that can’t afford to pay for gas, let alone buy a car. Second Cycle is run out of the Von Hartmann’s home and is easily identified by an old bike that has been painted many colors and has jasmine growing around it with a Second Cycle sign next to it.

Von Hartmann’s experience with working on bikes goes back to when he was five-years-old when he first started working on bikes. Throughout Von Hartmann’s life he has been an auto mechanic and now has the skills to oversee all the repairs that are done

to the bikes. One of the things Von Hartmann loves most about Second Cycle is seeing the children's faces when they get a bike. “I love seeing a kids’ face light up

when they come to pick out a bike and take it home as their own.”

There are many challenges with running Second Cycle but the most challenging part to Von Hartmann is when a bike won’t work. “The hardest part to me is when you get a bike that looks great and looks like it’s ready to be adopted out and you look closer and see that it has a cracked frame. When that happens your heart drops. Thankfully that has only happened to

five of the bikes we have gotten.’’

Von Hartmann’s goal with Second Cycle is to make as many kids happy as possible.

If you have any bikes or bike parts that you would like to donate, email Second Cycle at [email protected].

When I get older I plan on going to UCF or Harvard. There I will study for a career to be a pediatrician or a nurse (RN).

Before I go there I will go to Lake-Sumter Community College, so I will know all the basics of college.

After I graduate college I will go to London to experience adventures, shopping and learn to speak French.

Then I will go to Texas and experience the West and see the big spiders there.

Then I will move to Atlanta, GA and work to save lives, communities and fly to Africa and Haiti to save lives and build a shelter.

Then I will retire and move to Miami, Florida. There I will help people become doctors or nurses. I will also build a shelter for kids to enjoy their freedom or life with their friends, and build a basketball court where kids can meet basketball players.

When you get in bed at the end of the day and think, “I had a bad day today because I had stew for dinner” or “my mom did not get me a new toy that I wanted,” think instead of all the good things you do have. The trip I made last year to Nicaragua was nowhere close to what Derling and his family suffer. Derling is a 15-year old boy our family gives money to every month to help him and his family survive. Tap-tap-tap. It was nearly five in the morning. My mom was tapping me to wake up. We were getting dressed and carrying our suitcases out the door. I was now in the backseat of our car thinking about the yummy frijoles (beans) in Nicaragua which is located in Central America. Now the whole family was in the car and my dad was backing the car out of the driveway ready to go to the

parking area to get on the bus that would take us to the airport. We are now waiting for our mom to figure out what happened to the second plane we needed to get on. She came back to tell us we had to stay in the airport hotel for the night. The next day I woke up from my cot in the hotel. Once we were all ready, we went off to the next plane. We enjoyed our flight. We were picked up by my aunt who took my brothers and I to my abuela's (grandma's) house while my parents drove in my Tio Juan's truck. When we got there, we were greeted by our relatives. When we went to Nicaragua, we went to visit Derling, the kid we sponsor. The last time we were in Nicaragua, we visited his house that was made of plastic bags

and a piece of tin for the roof. His family ate chicken that they raised and killed. They would

drink water and on special occasions they would get milk. There are five kids in his family. The dad has died a few years ago. They walk to school a couple miles away. We brought them school supplies, food and some clothes.

I feel so bad for Derling and his family and all the poor people in the world. Maybe, the next time you're having a bad day, think about Derling and his family..
