fellow residents to wear it as well!
Thank you!
To Carolyn —A big thank you for the boun-
ty of handpicked fresh greens that you
have delivered to the kitchen over the past
two weeks. These beautiful, tender
greens have been combined with the
greens in the tossed salads and used in
cold platters prepared for the residents.
Talk about hyper-local! Thank you
Carolyn for these gifts from the garden.

Women’s Suffrage Depended Entirely on the Votes of Men
As we celebrate our fathers on Father’s Day,
it’s a good time to remember that the ability
of us women to gain the right to vote
required our male allies (since they were the
only ones who could vote). Over women's
70-year struggle for women’s suffrage, there
were more than 50 electoral campaigns, and
in every one, a large number of men—often
above 40%—voted in favor of equal
suffrage. In NY, California and 11 other
states, a majority of male voters actually
approved women’s suffrage.
One hundred years ago, in August, 1920,
after the overwhelmingly male Congress and
36 state legislatures approved it, women’s
right to vote became the 19th Amendment to
the US Constitution. We are grateful to our
fathers, brothers, husbands and male friends
for their caring, their courage, and their
support.

How to Wash Cloth Face Coverings Cloth face coverings are an additional step to help slow the spread of COVID-19 when com-bined with every day preventive actions and social distancing in public settings. Cloth face coverings should be washed after each use. It is important to always remove face coverings correctly and wash your hands after handling or touching a used face covering. How to clean Washing machine • You can include your face covering with your regular laundry. • Use regular laundry detergent and the warmest appropriate water setting for the cloth
used to make the face covering. Washing by hand • Prepare a bleach solution by mixing:
5 tablespoons (1/3rd cup) household bleach per gallon of room temperature water or 4 teaspoons household bleach per quart of room temperature water
• Check the label to see if your bleach is intended for disinfection. Some bleach products, such as those designed for safe use on colored clothing, may not be suitable for disinfection. Ensure the bleach product is not past its expiration date. Never mix household bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser.
• Soak the face covering in the bleach solution for 5 minutes. • Rinse thoroughly with cool or room temperature water. Make sure to completely dry cloth face covering after washing. Dryer Use the highest heat setting and leave in the dryer until completely dry.
Air dry Lay flat and allow to completely dry. If possible, place the cloth face covering in
direct sunlight. Copied from the CDC

Join a growing movement of people like you who are helping fellow community members living with dementia. A little support can make a big difference. Be a Dementia Friend!
What Makes You a Dementia Friend? You become a Dementia Friend by attending a one-hour informational session to learn about this worldwide movement, about living with dementia, and the simple things you can do to support someone living with the disease. What Happens at the Information Session?
The one-hour session is a discussion led by a Dementia Friends Champion. It is not a train-ing session. You will learn what dementia is, what it is like to live with the disease, and some tips for communicating with people living with dementia. Everyone who attends is asked to turn their new understanding of dementia into a practical action that can help someone living in your community. The action can be as big or as small as you choose—every action counts!
Dementia Friends is a global movement that is changing the way people think, act, and talk about dementia. Developed by the Alzheimer’s Society in the United Kingdom, the Dementia Friends initiative is underway in Pennsylvania and across the United States. By helping everyone in a community understand what dementia is and how it affects families, each of us can make a difference for people touched by dementia.
Dementia Friends Information Session: Thursday, July 23, 2020 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.
Participants will register on the website using this link: https://www.dementiafriendspa.org/eventdetail/263

& Ted Riga, Latvia 2019
In Riga, we walked through a park to a spa built by the Soviets in the 1960s during the Cold War. The spa was beautiful with gardens and a reflecting pool, designed to provide R&R for elite members of the Latvian Communist Party. Not until 20 years later did the local Latvian people learn that beneath the spa was a concealed, underground bunker for use in case of a US nuclear attack. We visited this 90-room bunker, which could accommodate 250 people for up to three months. In the dining room, still looking as it had when abandoned in the 1980s, we saw this poster. As we walked the halls of this hidden shelter, we felt cold, the walls smelled of damp cement, and heavy doors clunked behind us—not an attractive place to live. The woman in the poster invokes the silence and secrecy that still seems to surround the place.
6. Jay & Fleur Eight Decades of Beautiful
Summers in Québec’s Wilderness
31 Mile Lake, Québec, Canada 2019
When very young, my first travels from our home in Northern Ohio were to a great aunt’s farm 40 miles south of our home. At age seven I was allowed my first big trip, with our family of four, driving through Erie, PA, then Buffalo, where we crossed the Peace Bridge just upstream from Niagara Falls, and into Canada. After staying one night east of Toronto, we drove through Ottawa and then onto 80 miles of rugged dirt road to our destination at 31 Mile Lake, north of Ottawa in Québec Province. For the locals, the lake is the Lac des Trent-Et-Un Miles. It is a maze of channels and islands, still pristine wilderness 83 years after my grandparent Chandlers built a summer
cottage here, complete with ice house, shop, and boathouse. Since the 1940s, I and my family have repeatedly returned to this beautiful place with its clear waters, thick forest, colorful sunlight, great bass fishing, mink, eagles, and so many loons.

7 Barbara Camel Muzzles for Sale
A Souk at Dubai 2006
Our son and his family lived in Dubai from 1999 until 2010. On a trip in 2006 we visited the
Camel Race Track on the outskirts of Dubai. The track had been “closed” (actually moved far
into the desert) because of an international
outcry over the treatment of boy jockeys.
Training continued at the original
location, and all support staff lived there.
I took the pictures at the outdoor Souk
which served the workers. It consisted of
a series of connected concrete stalls
offering everything the men and camels
needed, food, linens, clothing, cooking
utensils, plus camel feed. The
temperatures were in the 90s. Camels
wear muzzles to prevent spitting and
biting.
