Fifty-nine musicians on the plaza bandstand on Tuesday July 4 was more than a full house. The band members were packed together with little room for music stands, the full complement of percussion equipment and some sound equipment. Two concrete blocks, more properly known as Concrete Masonry Units or CMUs for short, were added to the steps of the bandstand to accom-modate the podium for our conductor Greg Heltman. Notes from the President

A Santa Fe Tradition since 1865 Paul

Two of the musicians on July 4th this year, Laurie Rossi and Rene Freeman, were the winners of our December Holiday Concert Auction which is now a regular feature of our performance at the Lensic. The auction includes the opportunity for one person to select a piece of music, rehearse with the band and to conduct the band on the plaza at the July 4th performance while another person has the prospect to join the percussion section and Ring the Bell in the performance of John Philip Sousa’s Liberty Bell March.

We are grateful for the financial support from these two winners of last year’s auction as well as what they added to the program on the 4th of July. Laurie Rossi was our guest conductor; she selected Danzon by Leonard Bernstein, arr. Jay Bocook. She did a wonderful job both at rehearsals and for her debut with us on the bandstand. The Bell Ringer was Rene Freeman who was nearly flawless both at rehearsal and on stage.

Our Director Greg Heltman provides great advice to the band both from the podium and as a member of the Board of Directors; in short, he is the glue that holds the band together. I suppose it may be trite to say “Super Glue” but it is a wonderful analogy and tribute to Greg, who is also known for his “strength, quality, and durability”.

The Santa Fe Concert Band was formally incorporated in 1983 under Greg Heltman’s directorship. One year later he founded the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra, and has been a trumpeter with it ever since. Since 1996 he has been the General Director of the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, Inc. Thank you Greg for your leadership – you have stuck with us and been great for both small and heavy-duty repairs, in short you have been super!

A native of Cleveland, Mike Thompson lived there and worked until joining the military during the Viet Nam War. His formal education began after that. He wanted to be a professional horn player, so he enrolled at Bowling Green and later transferred to a larger Music School--the Univer-sity of Cincinnati. Deciding to switch his major, he graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Presently he is an adjunct Professor of Engineering at SFCC, teaching Manufacturing Engineering.

While living in Cleveland, Mike started playing trumpet in junior high but switched to French horn in high school. He studied with his band director, who also was 2nd horn player in the Akron Symphony. Mike played some with the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra. At that point, he entered the service and was assigned to the US Military Academy Band. He became a Bugler and says, “I guess my trumpet playing early on came in handy.” He eventually was assigned to the West Point Concert Band, performing for concerts, on post parades, ceremonies and sporting events.

Before retiring, Mike worked as a Mechanical Systems Engineer, designing vertical lathes and robots. He had also managed a manufacturing group and a hydraulic engineer-ing department.

Mike and his wife Susann moved to Santa Fe in August 2016. They are enjoying living in Eldorado and learning to find which plants will survive there. Since Mike took a 25-year vacation from playing because of his hectic work schedule, he is thankful for the opportunity to play again. He has found the band members friendly, helpful and patient with him as he becomes a part of the horn section. He likes the band repertoire and says, “When I was growing up, I used to hear the bands in the local park -- and now that’s me!”

Just for fun --

Q: How can you make a trombone sound like a French horn?A: Stick your hand in the bell and play a lot of wrong notes.

Q: What’s the difference between a horn player and a director?A: Two measures

Q: Why is the French horn a divine instrument?A: Because a man blows in it, but only God knows what comes out.

Longtime members of the clarinet section, Dave Dennison and Bob Jones

to be a volunteer participant at Pancakes on the Plaza and we look forward to it each year.

The Band’s program for July 4 included Sousa’s Liberty Bell March and Berstein’s Danzon.*

In addition, there were two vocal soloists for our program, Gary Harris and Rose Marie Lenahan both of whom are accomplished vocalists and frequent performers with the band. Rose Marie joined us, as she has for many years, in the singing of the Star Spangled Banner. Gary Harris belted out the tunes and led the large number of singers in the audience at our annual performance of the Patriotic Sing-A-Long. Allegra Print and Imaging, provided the Song Sheets for the Sing-A-Long. Vic Perry, the owner of Allegra, has been very generous in providing the printed programs. He has been a member of the band since 1989.

Danzon by Leonard Berstein, arr. Jay Bocook

Go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYBQUhStO0Q and listen to the music and follow along in the score. You will get a good sense of the complex rhythms, and you will see what the conductor is using.

Danzón is the music that Laurie Rossi conducted on July 4. It is a brilliant piece composed by Leonard Bernstein in collaboration with famed choreographer Jerome Robbins for the 1944 ballet Fancy Free. Jay Bocook's skilled adaptation for band captures the sensual mood of the original and offers a unique programming choice.

Danzon comes from the words Danza and Son, two other dance styles. It is also an active musical form in Mexico and is still beloved in Puerto Rico. The danzón evolved from the Cuban contradanza, also known as the habanera, literally Havanan dance - a dance in slow duple time.
