The Buddhist Text Translation Society (BTTS) is dedicated to making the principles of the Buddhadharma available to Western readers in a form that can be directly applied to practice. Since the early 1970s, the Society has been publishing Eng-lish translations of sutras, instructional handbooks on meditation and moral conduct, and biographies. Many of the Society’s sutra translations are accompanied by contemporary commentary, based on lectures spoken by Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua.

The accurate and faithful trans-lation of the Buddhist Canon into English and other Western languages is one of the primary objectives of the Dharma Realm Buddhist Association (DRBA), the parent organization of the Buddhist Text Translation Soci-ety.

When Buddhism first came to China from India, one of the most important tasks required

for its establish-ment was the translation of the Buddhist scriptures from Sanskrit into Chinese. This work involved a great many people, such as the renowned monk National Master Kumarajiva (fifth century), who led an assembly of over 800 people to work on the translation of the Tripita-ka (Buddhist canon) for over a decade. Because of the work of individuals such as these, nearly the entire Bud-dhist Tripitaka of over a thousand texts exists to the present day in Chinese.

Now the banner of the Buddha’s teachings is being firmly planted in Western soil, and the same translation work is being done from Chinese into English. Since the 1970s, the Buddhist Text Translation Society has been making a paramount contri-bution toward this goal. Aware

that the Buddhist Tripitaka is a work of such magnitude that its translation could never be en-trusted to a single person, BTTS, emulating the translation as-semblies of ancient times, does not publish a work until it has passed through four committees for primary translation, revision, editing, and certification. The leaders of these committees are bhikshus (monks) and bhikshu-nis (nuns) who have devoted their lives to the study and prac-tice of the Buddha’s teachings. For that reason, all of the works of BTTS emphasize the applica-tion of the Buddha’s teachings in terms of actual practice.

Master Hua was born in 1918 near Manchuria, China into a family of frugal farmers. He learned to read at 15, and after his mother’s death at 19, he became a monk. He meditat-ed by his mother’s grave for three years and practiced other austerities before receiving full ordination.

At Nan Hua Monastery in Canton, the bodhimanda of the Sixth Patriarch Hui Neng, Master Hua received the mind-to-mind

transmission of the Patriarchs from Master Hsu Yun, making him the 45th Buddhist patriarch in direct lineage from Shakya-muni Buddha.

With the arrival of the commu-nists on the Chinese mainland, the Master went to Hong Kong to promote orthodox Buddhism. In 1962, he brought monastic, Mahayana Buddhism to Amer-ica. He founded the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, the Interna-tional Translation Institute, and

over 20 other monasteries and temples all over the globe, with the goal of spreading Buddhism worldwide.

NEW AND NOTABLE

In China Buddhism flourished during the Liang Dyansty (502–587) due in large part to Emperor Wu, who personally met with Bodhidharma, the 28th Indian patri-arch from Shakyamuni Buddha.

Legend has it that Emperor Wu’s wife died prematurely and fell into the lower realms. In order to rescue her and to help her spirit ascend to the heavens, Emperor Wu, a great patron of Buddhism, had Chan Master Baozhi compose a re-pentance ceremony on her behalf. The resulting repentance text was so successful and popular that it is still used in monasteries today.

Repentance Dharma of Kindness and Compassion in the Bodhimanda is a complete English translation of what

is popularly known as “The Jeweled Repent-ance of the Emperor of Liang.” It was translated over a period of 15 years by the monks, nuns and laity of the Bud-dhist Text Translation Society.

This particular repentance is designed to be practiced in a monastery with bhikshus (monks) and bhikshunis (nuns) leading those wishing to repent in a week-long ceremony. The repentance text is divided into ten chapters of forty sec-tions. Each chapter starts with a verse of praise. The main part of each chapter con-tains sections of texts explaining the principles of repentance interspersed with bow-ing in full prostration (head, hands and knees to the ground) to various Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Each chapter concludes with a poem.

Buddhist Meditations on Islamic Contem-plative Paths is a collection of academic lectures and papers that shows the connections between Bud-dhism and Islam. Within the greater scope of Islamic development, the book describes details of these interactions during the tenth and eleventh centuries. The author provides an abundance of supporting resources and references as she weaves her special knowledge of a lit-tle-understood culture that is a rich repository of wisdom and spiritual traditions and traces the unbro-ken thread that connects us all.

Snježana Akpınar’s practice is Buddhism, but her studies are in Islam. She is orig-

inally from the Republic of Croatia. She graduated from the University of Belgrade in the former Yugoslavia and earned her doctor-ate inOttoman Turkish Studies at the University of Istanbul.

Before retiring, Dr. Akpınar spent half her time at the City of Ten Thou-sand Buddhas, a Chinese Buddhist Monastery in Northern California, teaching Buddhists about the West, and the remainder of her time at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, offering courses in Islam and comparative religion, teaching Westerners about the East. She is presi-dent emerita of the Dharma Realm Buddhist University in Ukiah, CA.

NEW AND NOTABLE

This collection of letters was written by two American Buddhist monks, Heng Sure and Heng Chau, during their two-and-a-half year pilgrimage for world peace along the California coast from 1977 to 1979. Bowing to the ground after every three steps, in the manner of early Buddhist pilgrims in China, they made their way from Gold Wheel Temple in Los Angeles, following Pacific Coast Highway to Mendocino County and the newly established City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. Going at a pace of a mile of day, they bowed, -studied, and wrote letters chronicling their experiences to their teacher, Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua.

These journals are a complete chronicle of the journey that Heng Sure and Heng Chau kept during their two-and-a-half year pilgrimage mentioned above. These eight volumes contain the daily journals and letters of the monks as they reflect on their journey along the California coast and their spiritual journey of self-transformation. They wrote numerous reflections on passag-es taken from various sutras, inspirational readings, and literature, as well as people and sit-uations they encountered on the way.

“The knowledge and vision of the Buddha is just your own mind; there is no other Buddha.” Such is the teaching of Master Huineng (638–713), the most import-ant and most revered figure in the Chan (Zen) School of East Asian Buddhism. Huineng left no written record, but his students compiled accounts of his public lectures and one-on-one exchanges, together with the dramatic story of his life. The resulting volume was The Sixth Patriarch’s Dharma Jewel Platform Sutra, “sixth” because Master Huineng is count-ed as the sixth generation of patriarchal succession from the first Chan patriarch Bodhidharma. Master Huineng’s Platform Sutra is so highly regarded in East Asia that it is called a sutra, a term otherwise

reserved for texts originating in India that record the words spoken by the Buddha or Bodhisattvas.

As Huineng says in a verse, ‘The -Bud-dhadharma is right here in the world; there is no awakening apart from this world.’ The essence of the Sixth -Patri-arch’s philosophy is that all beings have the buddha-nature; all can become Bud-dha. Full awakening is not a future state or a distant place, but exists ‘right within your own mind,’ directly and immediately available. The text presents a powerful and resounding vision of un-bounded human potential waiting to be fully real-ized—if only we could see it.”

Also known as the Avata.msaka Sūtra, in Sanskrit Mahāvaipulya-buddhāvata.msaka-sūtra, in Chinese Da fangguang fo huayan jing / 大方廣佛華嚴經, this immense, multi-volume sutra is yet to be fully translated to English by BTTS. The volumes available include commentary by Tripitaka Master Hua that makes the text and its principles come to life by adding explanatory text and background stories. The many chapters of this sutra reveal the vastness of the Buddha’s realiza-tion and the bodhisatt-va’s mind, reveal the different stages on the bodhisattva path, and -present a cosmos of infinitely

interpenetrating realms. Be-cause of its depth and great length (81 scrolls with more than 700,000 Chinese characters), it is traditionally known as the ‘’King of Kings’’ among Buddhist scriptures. This true spiritual classic, with its depth of thought and its practical tools for spir-itu-al cultivation, has been the foundation for many Buddhist thinkers and practitioners throughout the ages. It is the basis for the East Asian Huayan 華嚴 (Japanese: Kegon) school of Buddhist philosophy.

(Based on lectures given by Master Hua in California from 1971 to 1979)

In the Prologue, divided into Ten Doors or sections, Master Chengguan gives a detailed analysis of the profound doctrines of the Huayan School. The four volumes comprise the First and Second Door, which explain the origins and classification of the teaching.

SUTRA

This sutra, more commonly known in English as the Lotus Sutra (in Sanskrit, Saddharmapu.n.darīka Sūtra), is one of the major Buddhist texts of East Asia. According to Chinese interpretation, it was spoken in the last period of Śāk-yamuni Buddha’s life, proclaiming the ultimate principles of the Dharma, which unites all previous teachings into one. With many parables—e.g. those of the burning house, the lost son, and the rain—the Buddha teaches that all beings can become fully enlightened Buddhas and that this achievement, and not that of becomintg Śrāvakas or Pratyekabud-dhas, has always been the ultimate intent of his teaching. This sutra also includes separate chapters on

several important bodhisattvas with-in the Mahāyāna tradition, such as Avalokiteśvara (Guan shi yin 觀世音) and Samantabhadra. All the chapters include extensive commentary by the Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua, whose lively and highly accessible explanations show this ancient text’s meaning as instructions for practice of the spiritual path even in the modern world. Sixteen volumes, contain-ing the entire twenty-eight chapters, are currently available.

Regarded as a complete and practical manual for spiritual practice that will lead to enlightenment, this sutra pro-vides instruction on understand-ing one’s own Buddha-nature, the poten-tial within every being for becoming a Buddha. The sutra explains how and why this nature is hidden and how we can uncover it and recognize it as our own true mind. The sutra also explains why personal integrity and purity of conduct are prerequisites for spiritual awakening. It presents the principles of meditation, and provides guidelines for discerning correct practices from those which deviate into wrong ones. It explains how our own intentional acts, whether physi-cal, verbal, or mental, result in karmic experiences, including rebirths into vari-ous levels of being, both human and non-human.

At the heart of the Sūtra is the Śūra˙ngama Mantra. The sutra promises that the practice of reciting this mantra, in the context of the other practices taught in the sutra, can successfully eliminate internal or external obstacles that block the path of spiritual progress.

This translation of the Śūra˙ngama Sutra was produced over a period of six years by a committee of Buddhist monastics and experienced lay prac-titioners led by David Rounds and Dr. Ronald Epstein. Rounds, editor of the journal Religion East & West, holds a B.A. from Harvard and an M.A. in Buddhist studies and translation from Dharma Realm Buddhist University. Epstein, a practicing Buddhist scholar, holds a Ph.D. in Bud-dhist Studies from the University of California, Berkeley and recently retired from teaching Buddhist studies and world religions at San Francisco State University.

The Sutra in Forty Two Sections is traditionally regarded as the first -Buddhist text translated to Chinese and serves as an excellent introduction to the realm of Buddhist canonical writings. It contains short and clear traditional explanations and instructions for those beginning on the Bud-dhist path. The text’s forty-two sec-tions cover a variety of topics, ranging from basic Buddhist terminology, moral instructions, and warnings

about the danger of sexual desire to meditators. Commentary by Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua further clari-fies the text according to the format of traditional explanations and further emphasiz-es its principles and their relevance for spiritual cultivation in the modern world.

(Based on lectures given by Master Hua in San Francisco, 1974)

Health is an important concern for human beings and hence a topic of immense importance in religious thought and practice as well. Where does sickness come from? How can we give meaning to the experience of being sick? And, what methods can we use to heal ourselves? Medicine Master Sutra describes perfect health and healing methods, including visualization,

mantras, and contemplation. Ultimately, sickness is traced back to the roots of suffering, ignorance and desire.

(Based on lectures given by Master Hua in 1983)

Reminiscent of Dante’s Inferno but largely unknown in the West, this sutra, which discusses the workings of karma and rebirth, describes the various Buddhist hells and the reasons for falling into them. Spoken by Shakyamuni Buddha, it tells us that he entrusted Earth Store (Ksitigarbha) Bodhisattva with the endless task of rescuing all

living beings from suffering. Earth Store’s long history and extraordinary vows to accomplish this impossible task have made this an extremely popular Buddhist text and the predominant fu-neral scripture in East Asia for centuries. Master Hua and his disciples published the first ever English translation from classical Chinese.

Often cited as the best-known Mahayana Bud-dhist sutra, the Heart Sutra has been chanted daily in Bud-dhist monasteries in Asia for more than a thousand years. This sutra, the “heart” of the larger Prajna Par-amita (Perfection of Wisdom) Sutra, describes the transformation of wisdom and experience of the liberation of

the bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokiteśvara, through the insight gained from deep meditation into the fundamental emptiness of all phenom-ena.

THE HEART OF PRAJNA PARAMITA SUTRAtranslated by Ronald Epstein, PhD

A highly readable translation of the Vajra Prajna Paramita Sutra as transmitted in the Chinese tradition, this brief text summarizes the teach-ings on emptiness of the Prajñāpāramitā, the perfection of wisdom. In this sutra, the Buddha teaches his disciple Subhuti the subtle points of Buddhist philosophy on -emptiness, the lack of true existence of anything—thoughts are

illusions; life is a dream. Master Hua enriches the text by providing details and narratives, and he explains how to incorporate the concept of emptiness into our lives.

A central text of the Consciousness-Only (Yogācāra) school of Buddhism in China, this treatise by the Indian scholar-monk Vasubandhu presents a list of 100 dharmas, primary elements of our experience. The list includes elements ranging from the subconscious realms of the mind to the sense organs, and from the material world to the unconditioned. Master Hua’s com-mentary provides examples and explanations of

all the elements. The-ory and practice merge in his commentary, as he shows how this text is not mere philosophy, but is of invaluable use on the Buddhist path, breaking through confusion and attachment.

(Based on lectures given by Master Hua in San Francisco, 1970)

The Resolve for Bodhi (bodhicitta), the aspiration to reach full Awakening or enlightenment for the sake of all living beings, is a core element of Ma-hayana Buddhism. This short text by Master Xing An (d. 1734) who lived in Hangzhou, provides instructions on the Resolve for Bodhi that fit well into the Chinese cultural context, while staying true to the spirit of Mahayana Buddhism. Mainly written for a monastic audience, the text provides

an intriguing glimpse into the Buddhism of the Qing Dynasty, which is yet to receive much schol-arly attention. At the same time, the text and its modern commentary by Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua also speak to the -people of the twenty-first century, asking what makes our lives worth living.

(Based on lectures by Master Hua in CA in 1979 & 1985)

A clear and concise introduction to Buddhism compiled by monks and laity of the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas in California. The book uses original source material to explain essen-tial teachings of Buddhism such as the Four Noble Truths, the concept of karma, and Bud-

dhist cosmology. Also included are discussions of different forms of Buddhist practice, such as meditation (Chan/Zen), devotion (Pure Land Buddhism), and esoteric practices such as the recitation of sutras and mantras.

Straight from the spoken instructions on Chan (Zen) meditation given by Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua during meditation retreats in the seventies and eighties in various locations in the United States, this collection touches upon topics such as basic posture and breathing techniques, meditation topics (especially the hua-tou), as well

as unsettling experiences that can occur during meditation and the ways to avoid or remedy them. This book, however, does not merely introduce Chan practice; it introduces its tradition in the context of actual experience, as the Master recounts many stories about his own experiences and those of others.

Fulfilling one of his vows to spread Buddhism from the East to the West, Tripitaka Master Hua and a group of dis-ciples traveled to Europe in 1990 to spread the Dharma in Europe. In lively lectures and discussions in England, Belgium, Poland and France, he touched on the subjects of

• stopping wars• harmony among religions• karma and illness• communism• education as national defense• spiritual mantras

Venerable Master Hua’s Talks on Dharma (bilin-gual Chinese/English)

Master Hsuan Hua speaks candidly on cultiva-tion. His lectures to his disciples over a period of 40 years, in places as diverse as Hong Kong, Tai-wan, Poland, France, Canada and cities through-out the United States, have been col-lected into a twelve volume series called “Dharma Talks.”

He speaks on such topics as• the practice of patience• the six basic guidelines for cultivating

A captivating story about one of the most influential leaders of Buddhism in America. As a youth in China, he liked to fight, ride wild horses, and tended to disobey his parents. Later, he changed by bowing to his parents and bringing them honor. At nineteen, he became a Buddhist monk, living in the snowy

mountains with tigers as friends. Without a cent, he traveled through China to America where with simple words and humor, he revealed the deep meanings of the Buddha’s teachings. With kindness, compassion, and joy, he devoted his life to oth-ers.

THE KIND MONK

by Bikshuni Jin Rou

Master Hsu Yun (虛雲, Xu Yun; “Empty Cloud”) was a renowned Chan master and one of the most influential Chinese Buddhist teachers of the 19th and 20th centuries. He founded Zhenru Monastery in Jiangxi Province and restored Nanhua Monastery in Guangdong Province, the monastery of the Sixth Chan Patriarch Huineng. At Nanhua Monastery, he transmitted the Dharma-seal of the Weiyang

lineage of the Chan school to Tripitaka Master Hsuan Hua (then Tu Lun). Over his 119-year lifespan (1840–1959), he witnessed the end of imperial rule in China, the short-lived rise of the democratic republic, two world wars, and the eventual rule of the Chinese Communist Party.

CHILDREN’S BOOKS

retold by Bhikshuni Jin RouIllustrated by by Shramanerika Gwo He

Snow-Covered Peaks is a devo-tional book for children, retold from the Buddha’s long discourse on The Land of Bliss. It is a great book for children to connect with their kind and caring nature. Beautiful artwork is combined with text, introducing children to the most significant values of Buddhism, such as loving-kindness, compas-sion, giving, and courage. On each page, the reader meets one of the Buddha’s helpers, a wise and kind Bodhisattva, and learns what’s special about them. The book ends

with a message of how children can bring peace in the world by being a Bodhisattva too.

This richly illustrated, historically accurate story relates the life of the Buddha, from his birth as a pampered prince, through his cul-tivation and enlighten-ment, to his founding of the Buddhist sangha and his final Nirvana.

illustrations by Tara Kandahsari, Cintya Kandahsari

The Buddha lived in India over 2,500 years ago and was a great and wise teacher. One of the wonderful ways he taught was by his very own actions. For this reason, and others, his teachings were sometimes called the teachings beyond words and lettes.

In this collection of stories the Buddha explains how to develop good character through wisdom, kindness, generosity, patience, and other such qualities.

In ancient India, youth learned about morality from Jataka tales, engaging stories about right and wrong and the consequences of one’s actions. The bilin-gual Spanish/English book La Leyenda de Mahaduta is the story of a rich jewelry merchant and his slave who encounter a wise Buddhist monk. The tale teaches the lessons of cause and effect, kindness and compassion, greed and hatred.

The story reads smoothly in both lan-guages, and the Spanish translation is excellent. The large, computer-generated illustrations, with their bright color palette, are reminiscent of Walt Disney’s animated films. . . .this story will appeal to young and old alike. A good addition to the legend section in school and public libraries, this book is also an excellent support resource for the study of religions in middle grade classrooms.
