I want to say “Thank You” to the residents of Haywood County for choosing me as Mr. Haywood County. It is quite a surprise and truly an honor! When we moved here a little over two years ago, my family and I noticed immediately that Brownsville/Haywood County is a special place fi lled with good hearted people that will go above and beyond to help one another. We look forward to spending the rest of our lives right here in Brownsville!
Lee Berry Mr. Haywood County

I am certain that I have never inter-viewed a person as humbled as Lee Berry was when I walked into his offi ce. “I never in a million years would have expected this,” said Berry. He was of course talking about being named 2012’s Mr. Haywood County. He and his fam-ily have only been in Brownsville for two years, and he “didn’t even know that the title Mr. Haywood County ex-isted.” But one thing is certain; he has made quite the impression on the people of Brownsville and Haywood County.
Berry is originally from Florence, Ala-bama, and holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the Uni-versity of Mississippi. He moved to Jack-son in 2007. At that time, he had been with State Farm for 11 years, where he worked as a fi eld specialist. In 2010, Berry decided he wanted to become an agent. He spent a year and a half training to become a State Farm Agent before he opened his offi ce in Brownsville. “I had several op-tions as far as cities to transfer to and
begin my career as an agent, but I want-ed to come to Brownsville,” said Berry. “We packed up and moved to Browns-ville, and we absolutely love it here.”
I asked Berry what the best part about being a State Farm Agent in Brownsville was, and he said, “help-ing the people here and being a part of this community.” Berry also stressed how vital his offi ce staff has been in his success. “We are like family here, we really are,” said Berry. “We usually all have lunch together, and we can sit around the table and laugh together.”
Berry’s wife, Casey, works with him, as do Sabrina Benard and Katrina Byrd. “They are a vital part of this offi ce, and I appreciate all that they do,” said Berry. “They are the fi rst faces our customers see, and they are always friendly and smiling, and they feel the same way I do: it is our job to serve them in any way we can. They’re just awesome.”
“I am completely shocked that I was named Mr. Haywood County,” said Berry. I just want to thank every-one for welcoming me and my fam-ily with open arms. We love it here!”

“The term ‘power’ comes from the Latin posse: to do, to be able, to change, to infl uence or effect. To have power is to possess the capacity to control or direct change. All forms of leadership must make use of power. The central is-sue of power in leadership is not ‘Will it be used?’ but rather ‘Will it be used wisely and well?’” -Philosopher Al Gini
The above quote seems to speak di-rectly about JoAnna Morris, the 2012 Miss Haywood County. JoAnna uses her leadership and power as Commu-nity Bank President of First South Bank wisely. She is dedicated to her family, her profession, and her community. That dedication, along with her warm and friendly personality, has led to her being named Miss Haywood County for the second time in three years.
Morris is a native of Brownsville, and a 1992 graduate of Union Univer-sity. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Union, and went on to graduate from the South-
ern School of Commercial Lending.Morris is also a proud graduate of
the 2000 Leadership Haywood Coun-ty class and a 2009 graduate of the West-Star Leadership Class, which is a program based at the University of Tennessee at Martin aimed at helping community-minded people become more involved. Morris has been a member of the First South Bank team for 15 years. She is a former member of the YMCA and Chamber of Com-merce board of directors, and cur-rently serves on the Carl Perkins Ad-visory Board and the Exchange Club.
Morris was named “Woman of the Year” in Haywood County in 2006 and Miss Haywood County in 2009. “The title Miss Haywood County means someone who knows, understands, re-spects, and cares about the past, pres-ent, and future of this community,” said Morris. “I think the community has been very good to me, and I try very hard to never lose sight of that.”
Morris and her husband, Greg, have two children, Gray and Graham, and they are members of First Presbyterian Church. JoAnna Morris

The concept of Lea and Simmons Funeral home began with a dream. Jody Lea had always been in the funeral business, and longed to open his own funeral home in his community. He ap-
proached his brother, Chris Lea, with the idea. They then went to Elliott Simmons, who immediately jumped on board. Lea and Simmons Funeral Home went from a dream to reality, and they now strive to serve their “family members” to the best of their ability. They have also welcomed a new partner, Harriet Bond.
“All of us in our careers had the privilege to work and train un-der Rex Bond,” said Chris Lea. “We were all instilled with his commitment to providing excellent service to each and every family member we serve.” The four partners have nearly seven-ty-fi ve years combined experience, and understand that they see people when they are going through one of the absolute worst times of their life. “We want people to leave here with the feel-ing of peace that comes from knowing that their loved one was handled with care,” said Jody. “Most of the people in this com-munity know us, or watched us grow up, and now it is us tak-ing care of their loved ones. We do not use trade embalmers, and that allows us to give a personal touch to each family we serve.”
I asked Jody how they felt about being named the “Best Funeral Home,” and he responded, “We are very hum-bled. It is truly an honor, and it shows that we are dedi-cated to our community and the families we serve.”
Lea and Simmons Funeral Home offers Traditional Funerals, Me-morial Services, Cremations, Insurance Funded Pre-Arranged Funer-als and a wide selection of Granite and Bronze markers. “It’s all about service. We will do whatever it takes to help our families in their time of sorrow,” said Jody. “They can count on us to be here for them.”

Jay Walker has always had a deep love for music. He start-ed taking piano lessons in the third grade under the direc-tion of Irene Saunder. During the summer of his eighth grade year, he had the opportunity to attend the Sewanee Summer Orchestra Camp where he was able to play with three differ-ent orchestras each week for six weeks. Later in life Jay had the opportunity to study percus-sion and organ under the direc-tion of Frank Schaffer, who is a percussionist with the Mem-phis Symphony Orchestra.
Jay currently serves as Di-rector of Music at First Presby-terian and Director of the Hay-wood County Arts Council. Before coming back to Browns-ville, he served in several other positions, including Director
of Music at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, where he started a concert series. “Music has always been a part of my life,” said Jay. “I am completely shocked and deeply honored to have been chosen for the title of ‘Best Musician.’” Jay has only been back in Browns-ville for a short time, and adds that being chosen for that title is like a “big welcome home.”
Jay said there are a lot of great things in store for the Arts Council next year. They have doubled their concert se-ries, and will be holding six concerts next year instead of three. They will also be adding a new movie series, as well as a “concert on the lawn” series that will be held at College Hill.
“I’d like to thank all of those who support me,” said Jay. “I have a deep love for mu-sic, and again, am completely honored that they chose me.”

Bobby Pratt loves what he does, and he loves this community. All you need to do is sit down and have a short conversation with him as I did, and it becomes crystal clear the deep love he has for his hometown and its people.
Bobby and his wife, Lanette, opened the doors of Pratt Termite and Pest Control in February of 1979. “I put i n a lot of 10 to 12 hour days the fi rst couple of years,” said Bobby. But business quickly grew, and he needed help. In 1981 he and his wife hired their fi rst employ-ee, and have continued to increase that number. Today they employee seven people, and strive to provide the absolute best pest control service to their customers.
Pratt offers a variety of services, including get-ting rid of everything from ants to snakes and ro-dents. “Insects change with the seasons,” said Pratt, “in the spring you have to worry about ants and in the winter you have to worry about mice. But we are here to serve our customers year round, and are not satisfi ed until they are satisfi ed.”
Pratt Termite and Pest Control suffered a great loss in March of 2000 when a devastating fi re took almost everything they had. “We struggled for three years,” said Pratt. “It was the closest I have ever come to wanting to close the doors and retire.” But Pratt has recovered, and are continuing to serve their custom-ers needs in a professional and courteous manner.
“The good Lord has blessed us,” said Pratt. “We have great customers and we’d like to thank them for their loyalty in allowing us to take care of them. They are our family members, and we will continue to work to keep them completely satisfi ed with our services.”
Bobby has been “retired” for the last two and a half years, but just can’t stop working. “I love this work because of the people,” he said. “My cus-tomers have been good to me, and it’s hard to walk away from that.” Bob-by’s goal is for his son-in-laws to keep Pratt Termite and Pest Control g strong when he offi cially retires. He wants the Pratt name to live on and continue to serve the people of Brownsville and Haywood County.

A sincere thank you to the community for choosing us as the “Best Lawyer”
for the fourth consecutive year. We are very grateful of this honor.
Although there is mention of Zion meetings in homes as early as 1831, Zion Baptist Church was organized in 1836. It was known at one time as a “Missionary Baptist Church.” Brother Jonas Stewart was honorary pastor for many years and currently his nephew, Dr. Bob Agee serves in that capacity. Holly Grove Baptist Church began in September-1885 as an offset from Zion and in October of 1901 some of Zion’s members left for the organization of Allen Baptist Church. The original building for Zion’s members burned in 1905, but was later rebuilt.
Zion has had many pastors since the beginning, but Brother Mark Conway led the congregation from 1995 until his death in October, 2011. During his leadership the sponsorship of Forerunner Baptist Church was started and is being led by Mike Hopper.
Members also purchased the land behind the building with the lake where several fellowship activities are held.
Following the sudden death of Brother Mark Conway, Dr. Mark McSwain has fi lled the pulpit as interim and a pastor search committee has formed. Many activities including youth, senior, and discipleship training are ongoing as well as the men’s community prayer breakfast each Thursday morning in the family life center at 6:00.
“It is an incredible honor for us to have been named “Best Church,” said Pastor Mark McSwain. “We want to be known as a church that loves people and the Lord.”
Zion Baptist Church has two Sunday morning services, one at 9 a.m. and another at 11 a.m. They also have Sunday and Wednesday evening services at 6 p.m.

First South Bank’s Peyton Riley was voted the 2012 B r o w n s v i l l e / H a y w o o d County “Best Bank Teller.” Peyton has been greeting customers with a friendly smile at First South’s West Main location for more than four years, but has been in the banking profession for the last 14 years.
Riley graduated from Tipton Rosemark Academy and then pursued an Associate’s degree in business management at Southwest Community College in Memphis. She worked for other fi nancial institutions before coming to Brownsville, but says she loves working in this community. “I feel like everyone here at the bank is my family,” said Riley. “And that includes our customers.”
I asked Riley what was most important to her as a teller, and she said, “Customer satisfaction. I follow the ‘Golden Rule.’ I treat others the way that I want to be treated. I greet them with a smile, and always try to call them by their name. I try to make them feel like family.”
“The bank expects a lot from its employees,” said JoAnna Morris, Community Bank President. “Only by having high expectations are high achievements possible. Standards of service are taken very seriously. But, bottom-line, it’s all about having competent, caring people, and then staying out of their way and letting them do their jobs well. It’s all about good dedicated people doing a good job, and Peyton does her absolute best to provide excellent customer service at all times.”

Lea and Simmons chose to keep the Treasure Chest legacy alive when they purchased the business after Tom Lea, the former owner, passed in 2011. This year the community let their joy about that decision be
known by voting Lea and Simmons Treasure Chest as the “Best Florist” as well as the “Best Gift Shop.”
The offi cial opening date was December 21, 2011, and Jody, Chris, Harriet and Elliott have spent the last year working hard to serve Brownsville and Haywood County’s needs. “This was a family business, and everybody
in the Lea family grew up working in Uncle Tom’s fl ower shop,” said Chris Lea. “When Uncle Tom passed suddenly, Aunt Judy wanted to retire and close it. We started thinking about it being an established business that’s deep in this town, and how it runs hand-in-hand with our funeral home. So we all got together, approached Aunt Judy, and decided to buy the business and carry on the tradition.” “We were afraid The Treasure Chest closing was going to hurt the community,” said Jody Lea. “I mean we heard people say, ‘what are we going to do if The Treasure Chest closes?’”
Tom Lea set the standard years ago, and was an icon in his business. Lea and Simmons is dedicated to continuing to serve this community with those same high standards, and it shows.
Lea and Simmons Treasure Chest is a full-service fl ower shop, and they serve their customers, whatever the need. From birthday and anniversary arrangements, to weddings, to funerals, Lea and Simmons offers it all. They also have a wide selection of gifts for all occasions. One thing is certain, if you are looking for the perfect fl ower arrangement or gift for any occasion, you can certainly fi nd it at Lea and Simmons. Not only can you fi nd that gift, but you can guarantee you’ll fi nd a staff eager to serve you and make sure you leave completely satisfi ed with your purchase.
“We would like to thank Brownsville and Haywood County for their support,” said Jody Lea. “It means so much to us that our community supports us and trusts us to take care of them.”
