Financial Aid Workshop Date: Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2013
Time: 6:30 pm

Seniors and Juniors to attend to learn about how to
take advantage of the FAFSA (Free Application for
Federal Student Aid) form question by question.
Information on how to fill out the form, avoiding
mistakes, and how to obtain loans, grants and
scholarships will be presented. Michelle Davis,
Director of Financial Aid at Lynchburg College will

ASVAB Testing –
Attention all Junior and Seniors The ASVAB Career Exploration Program is back as
an option for all current juniors and seniors. The test
will be administered here, at Brookville on
November 20th
. This test will provide students with
the opportunity to thoroughly explore career options
and discover personal skill strengths. If you are
interested, a sign-up sheet is available in the BHS
school counseling office. For more information or
questions about the ASVAB, please see Ms.
Melton/School Counselor.
Eleventh Grade Classroom Guidance We had our 1
st of several classroom guidance
lessons with the juniors on September 9 and 11,
2013. During this lesson we met with the students
through their English 11 courses. We covered
options after high school (workforce, military, 2-
year, 4-year and technical colleges) and what they
need to be aware of and planning on doing during
their junior year of high school to plan/prepare for
that transition. We also discussed the PSAT,
College Entrance Exams (SAT and ACT), Financial
Aid, Scholarships, the NCAA Clearinghouse for
prospective collegiate student-athletes, and so much
more. Each student was given a packet of
information to take home to share with parents.
Please take time to review this packet with your
student. The junior year is when the majority of the
planning and preparation for transition out of high
2
school takes place. What your child does in high
school truly has an effect on the doors that will be
open to them upon graduation.
I highly encourage you to stay updated on junior
year activities and events by checking out the the
Brookville High School Websites
www.bhsbees.com
You can also stay updated through the “BHS Junior
Bulletins” that are published every few weeks.
Each junior is given a paper copy and they are also
published on our website.
Tenth Grade Classroom Guidance We conducted our 1
st of several classroom guidance
lessons with the 10th
grade students on Sept. 18,
2013 through their English classes to discuss the
PSAT test. All students were given a handout to
take home to share with their parents.
The PSAT/NMSQT is a national standardized test
that is given to high school sophomores in
Campbell County Schools. The results will be used
to assist parents, students, teachers and counselors
in selecting courses for students and many
scholarships and enrichment programs.
The PSAT/NMSQT measures developed verbal and
mathematical abilities important for academic
performance in high school and college. It does not
measure other abilities, motivation, creativity, or
additional characteristics that also contribute to
success.
The PSAT/NMSQT has two verbal sections, 25
minutes each, two mathematical sections, 25
minutes each and one 30 minute writing skills
section. The entire test requires 2 hours and 10
minutes, plus 35 minutes for completing test related
activities. Test results will be available in
December.
The test was given on Wednesday, October 16,
2013. The test will began at 8:00 AM and finished
at approximately 11:00 AM. This is a mandatory
test for all 10th
grade Campbell County students
and all test fees for 10th
grade students are paid
by Campbell County Schools.
We conducted our 2nd
classroom guidance lessons
with the sophomores on Oct. 2 and 4, 2013 through
their English courses. During this lesson we
focused on preparing for the PSAT test. Sample
test questions were covered and well as test taking
strategies. Each student was provided with a paper
version of a full length practice PSAT test to take
home for test prep and a PSAT Test Taking
Strategies Handbook. These test preparation
materials are provided by Collegeboard, the test
company that provides the PSAT, and are very
useful materials in helping your student prepare for
this test.
We will conduct our 3rd
classroom guidance lesson
with the sophomores on November 6 and 8, 2013.
During this lesson we will meet with the students
through their English 10 courses. We will cover
graduation requirements and options after high
school. The focus will be on what the students can
and should be doing now as sophomores in high
school to prepare for those transitions. We will also
cover college entrance exams (SAT and ACT),
National Honor Society Requirements, Governor’s
School and Early College Program
Requirements/Application Process and the
Campbell County Technical Center. Each student
will be given a packet of information to take home
to share with parents. Please take time to review
this packet with your student. What your child does
in high school truly has an effect on the doors that
will be open to them upon graduation.
I highly encourage you to stay updated on
sophomore year activities and events by checking
out the Brookville High School Website
www.bhsbees.com You can also stay updated
through the “BHS Sophomore Bulletins” that are
published every few weeks. Each sophomore is
given a paper copy and they are also published on
our website.
Ninth Grade Classroom Guidance All freshmen at BHS took part in our first classroom guidance lesson during their English 9 class on September 25 and 27, 2013. We introduced the Freshman Workbook, which was given to every student in the ninth grade. Freshmen are asked to work through the workbook during FLEX, and we will also reference it in future classroom guidance lessons. The workbook is designed for freshmen to work on the skills and knowledge needed to BEE successful in high school. Topics include: • Life in High School • Learn About Yourself • What Motivates You • Your Future • How You Learn • Study Skills • Priorities and Goal Setting
3
Freshmen are asked to work at their own pace. Once they read, answer questions, and consider what they have learned, they are asked to fill out a blue sheet, and turn it in to the school counseling office. For their efforts, they are given a treat and a chance to win a $5 gift card to a local business!
Tips for Parents: Please ask your freshman
about their workbook and what they have learned.
Ask what their learning style is, and how knowing
that can help them study more effectively. Ask
what they learned about their time management and
organizational skills and how they will improve
them this year. Ask what goals they have for this
year, for high school, and beyond.
You can stay updated on freshman year activities by
checking the Brookville High School website
www.bhsbees.com. You can also stay updated
through the “BHS Freshmen Bulletins” that are
published every few weeks. Every freshman is
given a paper copy, and they are also published on
our website.
Our next 9th
grade classroom guidance lesson is
scheduled for November 11 and 13. During this
lesson, we will be working out of the Freshman
Workbook. Freshmen will work on developing and
reinforcing organization and time management
skills to help them be stronger students.
SAT We are a testing site for the November 2, 2013
SAT. Official SAT practice tests are located in the
BHS School Counseling Office. Students are
encouraged to take the practice test and review the
answers before test day to prepare. Additionally,
SAT prep books and study guides are available for
use in the School Counseling Office. You can also
visit www.collegeboard.com for additional study
and preparation materials.
BOOKS- AND-BALL PROGRAM –
An Educational Support Program
for High School Athletes

with vital support through academic tutoring twice
weekly, at no cost. They attend tutorial sessions
two days a week at no charge. This program is
available to all athletes attending high schools, both
public and private. There standard ration is 5
students to one tutor. Along with basic subjects,
tutors will focus a significant amount of their time
on advanced subjects such as geometry,
trigonometry, calculus, science, and other subjects
that the parents or home schools feel that they need
assistance with. Students who attend are also given
guidance through the process of obtaining athletic
scholarships and monitored to ensure that students
remain eligible for these scholarships through the
NCAA guidelines and Clearinghouse.

ENCOURAGE
YOUR HIGH SCHOOLER
TO VOLUNTEER
IN YOUR HOME TOWN Teens tend to think that the whole world is focused
on them – that “everyone” is looking at that huge zit
or “everyone” will laugh if they fail the driver’s
test. Help your teen think about the needs of others
by encouraging him/her to volunteer in your
community. They could volunteer at:
A local camp. Any camp could use any extra
pair of hands.
The local humane society.
The local library.
The local children’s museum. Amazement
Square has a teen volunteer program
The local hospitals. VA Baptist and Lynchburg
General have teen volunteer programs.
Habitat for Humanity
And so many more!
Teens who give back to their communities often
have higher self-esteem and are more courteous to
others. They also gain valuable work experience –
which will look GREAT on a job resume, college or
scholarship application. If your teen isn’t sure
where to volunteer their time, encourage them to
talk to their guidance counselor. We can help
connect your teen with a volunteer program that
will be right for them.

From the Library
The library is off to a great start this year with many
students using the library before school, after
school, and during lunch. Our “Visit the Library in
October and Win” campaign has also been a big
success. Students who had never visited came in
for a chance to win. Many of them checked out
books creating an increase in circulation of nearly
thirty percent over last year. It has been lots of fun
seeing students eager to read and win.
Students will once again be able to participate in
selecting the Virginia Readers’ Choice book this
year. The selections appear to have a broad appeal
this year. Students who read just four of the ten
selections can vote for the Virginia’s Choice book
for 2013-2014. See all ten of the selections on the
bulletin board just inside the library doors. Titles
include the following:
Anya’s Ghost by Vera Brosgol
Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys
Choker by Elizabeth Woods
Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride
Oogy: The Dog Only a Family Could Love by Larry
Levin
The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
Something Like Hope by Shawn Goodman
This Dark Endeavor by Kenneth Oppel
These books have all been nominated by your peers.
For those who voted last year, the 2013 high school
winner was Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares by Rachel
Cohn & David Levithan. If you have not read that
selection, you may want to check it out along with
others from that series.
If you would like to make recommendations
for titles for the library to purchase, please stop by
the circulation desk and add your choices to the list
of purchase considerations. Your input is
appreciated and your selections will be considered
for the collection.
Did you realize that you have a school email
account this year that allows you to email your
work to yourself or your teacher? Please use this
email account to get your work from home to
school. You no longer need to use external media
for saving your work if you use this email account.
Please remember that your personal email account
is still not accessible at school. If you have
problems with this, stop by the library for help.
Do you know someone who would be
willing to donate copies of the following BHS
yearbooks to the BHS library collection? We are
missing the 1973, 1979, 1987, 1995, 1998, and year
2000 copies. If you know someone who is willing
to donate, please contact me at the school at 239-
2636, ext. 8526 or bring it by the library. The BHS
yearbooks are some of the most used books in the
library. Students, teachers, administrators and
community members all come in asking to see
them. We would love to have a complete set.
Don’t forget that you can drop by the library
anytime between 7:30 AM and 3:00 PM to check
out a great book, to use the computers and other
available resources, or to just sit and read a book,
magazine, or newspaper. We look forward to
seeing you at the library.

Miss Brookville Pageant "A Night With the Stars," The 10th Annual Miss
Brookville Pageant, sponsored by BTV and B-
PUBS, took place on Friday, October 25, 2013.
Scores were based on GPA, extra-curricular
activities, teacher recommendations, interview,
casual wear, and formal wear. Our adjudicators
were Dr. Judy Goding, interview and talent coach
for Miss VA contestants, Miss Ashley Shores,2007
BHS grad and Biology teacher at Altavista High
School, Mr. Calvin Staton, Director of Volunteer
Services at Central VA Training Center, and Mr.
Sean Sublette, Chief Meteorologist for WSET- 13.
Fifteen junior and senior girls competed in this
year's pageant. 2nd runner-up was senior, Leah
Porter; 1st runner-up was junior, Emily Toth;
Senior Nicole Nicholson was crowned Miss
Brookville 2014. Her platform was The Challenged
Sports Exchange. As Miss Brookville, she plans to
get more BHS students involved with this
wonderful organization that is dedicated to
providing recreational activities and sports
programs for individuals with mental and/or
physical challenges in the Central Virginia region.
A Day of Service The Miss Brookville contestants and their friends,
chaperoned by Megan Emanuel (BTV) and Brett
Hastie (B-PUBS), loaded a bus on the morning of
Saturday, September 28 and headed out for a day of
service. Our first stop was New Vistas School. The
mission of New Vistas School is to provide an
individualized instructional program for students,
kindergarten through grade twelve, with learning
and attention differences, as well as the associated
emotional difficulties that often accompany these
challenges. We spent several hours painting their
dining room, mud room, and a bathroom. The Head
of School, Charlotte Morgan, was appreciative of
our time and efforts. Next, we went to the YWCA
on Church Street where we landscaped the entry
way. Junior Sherri Arthur said, "it was a fantastic
experience getting to know other BHS students, and
it made me feel good to help others."
7
Haunted Trail On Saturday, October 5 fifty Drama Club students
spooked patrons at the Third Annual Devault
Family Vineyard Haunted Trail. Drama Club
sponsor, Megan Emanuel and Drama Club
President, Riley Dewitt-Rickards, planned the
theme and organized the stations and costumes.
The students played patients who escaped from an
Insane Asylum. "My favorite part was seeing the
fear on people's faces when we jumped out at
them," said senior, Daniel Evans. A spooktacular
time was had by all!
