Its ministry is firmly grounded in sharing the good news through action and by being a good neighbor. Here are some examples of our continued partnership in Outreach: 1. Community Dinner: The Community Dinner program will be continuing its ongoing outreach through all of 2020 with 51 meals in 52 Thursdays. (The only 'off' week is Thanksgiving Day). We have renewed pledge of support from all of our 2019 participants including Advent Lutheran Church, Westminster Stake Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Westminster United Methodist, and the Bahai Community of Westminster. We are continuing to average 75-100 people per meal total combined guests and hosts. And the third Thursday night of each month, when Westy Pres hosts, FISH of Westminster opens for evening hours from 6:15-6:45. 2. FISH of Westminster: We saw a 10% increase in our clients from 2018 to 2019 as we continue to feed an average of 500 people a month. In addition to usual fare, FISH now stocks homeless ready-to-eat food items, a hygiene supply kit. head lamps, and a small collection of winter wear including gloves and socks. 3. Point-In-Time Survey: Every year during the last week of January there is a nationwide census of all the unhoused persons. The purpose of the survey is to generate demographic data that proves demonstrated need for housing support for at-risk communities. Last year in the Denver metro area, the Point-in-Time survey counted more than 5400 unhoused individuals who over a single night were sleeping in cars, shelters, or camping. As a result, the Denver metro area received $27 million dollars in federal funding to support housing needs. This year's PIT survey is Monday, January 27 though Tuesday, January 28. We will be working with many neighbors, agencies and government to help survey and count all of our unhoused neighbors, especially here in Westminster. This effort will include a magnet event on Monday night at the Westminster Swim & Fit (76th and Irving) and street outreach Tuesday to better count all those at-risk individuals whom we serve. ~Pastor David

“I was hungry and you gave me food to eat.

I was thirsty and you gave me a drink.

I was a stranger and you welcomed me…

I assure you that when you have done it for one of the

least of these brothers and sisters of mine,

you have done it for me.’”

Matthew 25:35 & 40

FISH OF WESTMINSTER, INC was established in 1970 by a group of Westminster Christians to express their love and concern for their neighbors. The name comes from the early symbol for Christians.

FISH of Westminster has evolved into two neighbor-hood foodbanks:

Westminster Presbyterian Church (WPC) and Westminster United Methodist Church.

Clients of WPC FISH Food Bank can be helped with food boxes once each month. Clients are provided sufficient food to feed their family for approximately 3 days.

Discounted food is purchased from the Food Bank of the Rockies. Additional food items – primarily bakery and dairy - are donated weekly by local grocery stores. Food is also donated by members of the WPC congregation, local organizations, and community food drives.

The amount and kind of food available varies based on donations and availability from the Food Bank of the Rockies. We serve residents of Westminster and portions of unincorporated Adams County.

Our Food Bank:

Provides food at no charge to over 150 families each month,

Open Monday through Friday, 3:00 – 3:30 pm, Is staffed entirely by volunteers, Operates throughout the year.

Letter to the Congregation:

Today I read that it's always so good to know that someone is walking with you through life. In difficult times it is nice to have someone to hold your and and pray with you; even cry with you. Shared sorrow has less power. Thank you so

much to my church family for sharing my sorrow in the loss of my son, Craig. Your support and caring have upheld me in these last few months.

Blessings to you all,

Sue Singleton.

~~~~~~Life is like a cup of tea – to be filled to the brim and enjoyed with friends.~~~~~~~~
Just when you think you know everything there is to know about WWII, along comes a book with new information. Did you know there was a battle fought on American soil? It was the Battle of Attu, in Alaska, with our GI’s fighting the Japanese.The book that tells about this battle is The Storm on Our Shore, by Mark Obmascik. Here’s what happens:
Dick Laird, an American, kills an enemy medic with a grenade. Af-ter the battle, Dick finds his diary. Reading it, he discovers startling news. The medic, Paul Tatsuguchi, had studied in the states, and loved America. Paul had returned to Japan to handle a family crisis when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He was forced into the Japanese military, and became a medic. Dick is tortured by the fact that he had killed
The story continues as Dick searches for Paul’s family, especially Paul’s daughter Laura. Laura wants to learn the truth about her father. Don’t you want to know what happens when they finally meet, some 40 years later?
Come and join us on February 16, at 7:00 p.m. at Rich and Barbara Day’s home. We will discuss the book and it’s implications while we enjoy the ice cream dessert that Dean Hammond always makes for us. New faces are always welcome!
Because love covers over a
multitude of sins”
SOUPER BOWL OF CARING – SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 2
A simple prayer: "Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those
who are without a bowl of soup to eat" is inspiring a youth-led movement to help hungry and hurting
people around the world. This prayer, delivered by Brad Smith, then a seminary intern serving in
Columbia, SC, gave birth to an idea. Why not use Super Bowl weekend, a time when people come
together for football and fun, to also unify the nation for a higher good: collecting dollars and canned
food for the needy?
Once again, FISH will be collecting cans of food and cash donations on Super Bowl Sunday, February 2,
before church. In addition, the Communion Offering will be collected in the name of the national
Souper Bowl of Caring. All funds will be donated to the Westy Pres FISH Food Bank.
From the Treasurer
PER CAPITA APPORTIONMENT
Every church is apportioned a share of the expense of the presbytery, the synod, and the General Assembly for
ecclesiastical purposes. The apportionment is based on church membership. The amount varies with the needs of the
presbytery, synod, and General Assembly and is a regular expense payable by this church at the spring meeting of the
presbytery.
The amount to be paid this year per communicant member is $32.00.
Barbara Scanlon
Westminster’s First Church
is now designated as Westminster’s
‘FIRST LANDMARKED CHURCH’
The first time the congregation of the Westminster Presbyterian Church meet was Sunday, January 3, 1892. Most of those attending were profes-sors and staff of the new Presbyterian University called Westminster Uni-versity located near 84th and Federal on Crown Point. The cornerstone of the new building was laid on June 6th, 1892.
The Village of Harris voted in February 24, 1911 to become the Town of Westminster taking the name from Westminster University. The Universi-ty closed during World War I when all of the male students left to fight in the war.
The church decided 1n 1922 to purchase the land the congrega-
tion is still on and relocate to be near the center of Westminster. The first Church building was finished in 1925 and served the congregation until it was razed in 1981.
After the Denver-Boulder Turnpike opened in January 1952 West- minster’s population started growing, the church’s membership also increased. A new sanctuary was built in 1957 to accommodate that
growth.
An Education wing was opened in 1961, named after Janet Gillespie who advocated for children’s Christian Education. The two buildings were con-nected in 1985 when the library and offices were added.
The congregation has been very involved with the City. Six of its members have served as Mayor of the City: Gil Bean, Francis Day, Don Hoch, Paul King, Don Nelson and AV Wil-son. Church members have served on the Westminster Public Schools Board, Adams County Commissioner, State House of Representatives, Regional Transportation District Board,
Westminster City Manager and Public Works Director. Members have served on the Mental Health, United Way, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Growing Home, Fish Food Bank and many more boards and committees. Over 200 boys have earned their Eagle Badge from Troop 324. The Westminster Masonic Lodge started its basement. Thousand’s of weddings and funer-als have taken place in the sanctuary of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
