My interpretation of The Bright Blue
Mailbox Suicide Note• The way I interpreted
this play was that whether it be someone you know or not, people handle the concept of death in different ways. Especially suicide. Some people handle it with humor, some with anger, and some with sadness.
Statistics of
Suicide• Between the ages of
ten and twenty-four, suicide is the third leading cause of death in the United States.
• Yearly total of young suicides each year (ages 10-24): 4,600
• Percent of students (grades 9-12) who reported seriously committing suicide: 16%
• 78.9% are males and 21.1% are females
Why would someone commit suicide?
• There are many reasons why a person would consider committing suicide. Some include:
– Bullying (cyber, emotional, physical, etc.)
– Mental disorders (depression, anxiety, etc.)
– Abuse (domestic, physical, emotional, sexual, etc.)
– Genetics passing down mental disorders that cause things like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc.
– Dealing with internal problems like sexual orientation (especially in an unsupportive environment)
– A previous unsuccessful attempt
Ways you can help prevent suicide• Don’t joke about it! Suicide is
not a joke, and is not funny. It has taken too many lives.
• Reach out to a friend if you think he/she is considering it.
• Stop bullying. No one thinks you’re cool, and words can kill.
• Start accepting people for who they are and don’t judge them for it. Everyone is equal, you know.
• Know the signs. Knowing the signs of someone who might be considering suicide can save a life that is worth keeping.
• Just be kind to everyone; there’s no reason to be mean.
