Building homes for the homeless in the Dominican Republic

A team of 11 people from Bewdley BaptistChurch are going to the Dominican Republicand build homes for the homeless Haitianrefugee families. They decided to supportthis work following the devastation caused inneighbouring Haiti.

Instead of sunning themselves for two weeks on thebeaches of the Dominican Republic in October, the team

will be hard at work building homes for people whoare currently living in shanty towns. In between thiswork, they will be helping with feeding programmesand working in hospitals and schools.

“We are certainly not a bunch of young people, ouraverage age is into the 60’s” said team memberDavid Glenn. “All of us decided to go on this tripafter we had a talk from Mission Direct as part of aSunday Church service. A number of us felt verychallenged to make the world a better place in onesmall way and give something back. Between us, thetrip and accommodation, will be costing around£15,000 and we need to raise £2,500 for everynew home that we build. We are also planning anumber of fund raising events so that we can do

much more while we are away. With funds that we raise we are hoping to not only build thenew homes, but furnish them with beds, chairs and cookers.”

Pat Streatfield, who is co-ordinating the visit added “For many of the team, they will bestepping out of their comfort zone and witnessing first-hand the conditions of the poor in athird world country. All of us are so excited that we can come together and use our variousskills and experience to make a real difference to people’s lives. I have been involved inoverseas mission before, but this will be the first time that I have seen such a group cometogether with such a clear vision.”

A number of fund-raising activities are being planned. These include knitting and selling teddybears with Dominican Republic flags on their chest, hosting a Caribbean Meal (with anauthentic Caribbean chef), asking local businesses to donate items for a promises auction, holding a Blues and Roots concert as part of this year’s Bewdley Festival and a barn dance in areal barn.

The team includes three ex-nurses, a landscape gardener, a graphic designer, a retired librarymanager, a retired chemistry teacher, a computer programmer, a medical receptionist, retiredmotorhome sales manager and a counsellor and their average age is 62.

As I write, Spring is hurtling towards us with birds whizzing around likeoveractive three year olds, trees and hedges flaunting their green bits anddaffodils and tulips shouting from every garden. I was in Jubilee Gardensthe other day, just for the pleasure of being out and about without a coat. The Gardens were looking particularly lovely in the Spring sunshine, andevery bench was full of people breathing a collective “Aah!” in the warmth.I failed to spot last month’s cover girl by the pond, but did enjoy seeingthe giant apple core down at the Lax Lane end where the new orchardhas been planted. Do go and look if you haven’t already; it’s wonderful.

One thing did occur to me while I was there. Why doesn’t Bewdley have a statue of Baldwinsomewhere? Our most famous son of the town and nothing to commemorate the fact apartfrom a blue plaque on the house he lived in. The Victorians used to raise a publicsubscription to put up all sorts of things; perhaps we should take a leaf out of their book.

I’m hoping that our civic pride will be evident in other ways this month as we DiscoverBewdley on the 30th and 31st, and you will find details of that inside. We will have lots tocelebrate, not least saying farewell to Severn Trent. Although the general feeling around townseems to have been “Actually, they’ve been pretty good, and the work had to be done”, Ithink there will be a universal sigh of relief when they finally pack up their bags and go.Perhaps we could all make a resolution to support our local traders, who have had such abad time during the roadworks

So bring on the sunshine, and let’s get out and enjoy our lovely town.

You move to a new area and you have a new job to settle in to, a new home tofind and perhaps schools to sort out for the kids. Once the initial hard work isover, you then start to think about how to meet people and build a social circle.Or perhaps you have been in the area for a long time but would like to expandyour horizons?

If you’re interested in coming along to a couple of evenings sosee if you like it, give one of us a ring. If you like, we caneven arrange for a couple of us to meet you in a pub for aninformal chat. We are a relaxed bunch and welcome all sorts- just as long as you enjoy social occasions and would like tobe able to put something back in to the community a couple of times a year. We look forward to hearing from you.

Scarification of your lawn

Well, you’ve probably been to have a look atthe lawn; maybe even been tempted to have aquick mow. But in all probability it’s head inhands and a despairing retreat to the comfortof an armchair, where the ravages of winterare best considered. Scarification, a posh wayof saying, “give the lawn a good raking” is said

to be the correct start before all the other lawn jobs. It’s really hard work raking out thethatch of moss, debris and lateral grasses but work that brings light and air to grass aroundits base.

The work creates an environment where good dense grass growth is possible, not the overaccumulation of organic material which leads to a poor lawn that is neither hardwearing nor tolerant to drought conditions.

Once scarification is complete, other tasks can be started straight away. Level the dips, aer-ate to improve drainage and spots that are compacted, over-seed areas that have lost toomuch grass, fertilize and water as needed.

Remember to keep off seeded areas until good growth is established, keep grass at your preferred height by regular mowing and then go for a really intensive scarification at the endof autumn to give yourself and the lawn a good start for next spring.

Life of an Opera singer Part 3

When I went to Bayreuth to sing in the operachorus, I was warmly greeted by Wolfgang Wagner, the grandson of Richard Wagner, whowrote the operas. I clearly remember that wewarmly shook hands.

Some months later I was browsing in a 2nd handbookshop and found a book about the history ofthe Wagner Opera Festival. I turned a page andsaw a photo of Adolph Hitler shaking the samehand of Wolfgang Wagner when he was a boy. Iwas quite shaken by the experience, and it provoked many deep thoughts, among which was

the realisation that Adolph Hitler, whom I regarded as a dreadful demon all my life, was onlyflesh and blood like the rest of us, and had shaken the same person’s hand as me.

Friends of Bewdley MusuemThe museum re-opened last month for Easter and visitors streamed in for the many activitiesorganised by the museum team. It is always fantastic to see so many people of all ages reallyenjoying the benefits of the museum. And it is so much more than just a museum! The visitor numbers across the season would make many larger attractions very happy.

We are always looking for new ways of keeping our visitors entertained. There are new children’s activities in the saw yard area, where volunteers help with brass rubbing. Plusthere is now a colouring table, new jigsaws, a history box and dressing up outfits. This willoperate weekends and through the school holidays as much as possible. Each month, on oneor two Sundays, there will also be more advanced brass rubbing opportunities. So we lookforward to seeing as many of you as possible.

You can also have a look at us now. We have a page on the Bewdley Development Trust website where we will try to keep you up to date with what we have going on.

www.Bewdley.org.uk. Just look for our link. You can also email us on [email protected]

A quick reminder for your diary – our AGM is on Wednesday 26th May at Bewdley Baptist Church at 7.30 – all welcome. Why not pop along and say hello.

Penny Griffiths Chair The Friends of Bewdley Museum.

During the course of future issues of the Bridge I hope togive readers a bit of insight into the role that Bewdley FireStation and its personnel play in the local community.

Bewdley Fire Station is one of 19 stations in Hereford &Worcester Fire and Rescue Service that operate the retained duty system.

It is a common misconception that we are volunteers, when in fact we are paid part timeprofessionals; trained to the same high standards as our full time (whole time) colleagues. However the Fire Service is not normally our primary occupation.

Typically a retained station crew live and work in the local community and must be availableto attend the fire station in less than five minutes when receiving a call.

Bewdley is currently equipped with a Dennis Sabre fire appliance and a Leyland DAF watercarrier. The primary role of the fire appliance is to provide a “first line attack” covering awide range of emergencies from fires, special service incidents including RTCs (road trafficcollisions) and various rescue situations. We can also call upon additional resources includingspecialist appliances and teams depending on the nature of the incident.

An equally important role is one of safety in the community; the old adage that “prevention isbetter than cure” has undoubtedly saved many lives. At Bewdley we take a proactive role byvisiting local events such as school fetes, the carnival and various civic occasions to promotethe safety message. A dedicated Freephone number is available to anyone needing Home FireSafety advice 08000321155 and if necessary we can arrange to visit you at home.

The fire station is “your fire station” and interested parties are welcome to get in touch andarrange a visit to meet members of the crew and learn more about our equipment and ourrole in the community.

The Brownies The Brownies at the at the

Fire StationFire StationOn Thursday 11th March an excited groupof girls from 2nd Bewdley Brownies metoutside Kidderminster Fire Station withBrown Owl Karen Chapman, new leaderTeresa Shaw and me. We were met by Crew Manager, Tony Wilks, who explained that hiscrew had just received a call out to a grass fire – so with blue lights flashing and sirenswailing we watched the fire engine (Tank) speed away.

After the excitement of watching the tank hurry away, we were led into the station’sgarage, where all the tanks are kept. Tony talked to the girls about incidents that requirethe fire service. We also saw the cutting equipment used to cut car roofs off and foundout that 1,800 litres of water is stored in each tank! Tony gave us a demonstration of thebreathing equipment that they have to wear when dealing with fires.

After walking through the tank to have a look the girls were given one last treat…. A gowith the hoses with the help of a fireman.

The girls really enjoyed their experience at the fire station, so a big thank you to CrewManager Tony Wilks for showing us around his tank and letting us have a go with thehoses.

Community News

Just over a year ago a flier caught my eye...’No sense of rhythm? No experience? No problem!’ I had wanted to join a band for years, but never had the musical talent required for playing most instruments. So I plucked up courage and went along to the firstever Samba Drumming workshop at Areley Kings Village Hall. By the end of a morning withprofessional percussion group ‘Glamba’ we were playing our first piece of Samba.

Since then we have gone from strength to strength and are now a fully fledged band. We arevery much a community band and are open to members of all ages and abilities. Our members range in age from 6 years to 60+ years. We have people like me with no previous experience, as well as skilled musicians.

Our rehearsals are for two hours on Sunday mornings. All you need bring along to a sessionis your smile and enthusiasm. We’ll provide instruments and even a tea break too. There isno charge for your first session. Thereafter we collect £3 per adult and £2 per child, all ofwhich goes towards buying new instruments etc. We do ask that children are accompaniedby an adult. In fact several of our adult members were ‘only meant to be bringing the kids’. If you’re still not convinced then come along and see us at Bewdley Carnival, pick up a shakerand join the groove. Dear readers,

During early April we have executedMisuse of Drugs Act warrants at residentialpremises in Bewdley, and more are inpreparation. The two seizures so far are atopposite ends of the drugs spectrum. Thefirst, linked to premises in Kidderminster, has prevented cannabis with a street valueof £1 million from going into circulation.Four Vietnamese Nationals are in prisonawaiting trial. The second was from a 19-year-old youth who was cultivatingcannabis in his bedroom for his mates andhimself. He has been cautioned, but he andhis family now face eviction. The cost to allof getting caught is proportionately severe.

We have since been told by other residentsthat they had suspected something wasgoing on. We really need such informationas soon as people become suspicious.Every little piece helps us to build up apicture. Frustratingly, so often whenconducting searches we find that most ofthe drugs have gone. Snippets ofinformation such as times and days thatstrangers visit an address can be crucial toachieving a big seizure and taking thedealers out of action.

Many people fear drug dealers due to amystique that has been built up in films andthe media. They are not sharp–suited hardmen protected by a gang of thugs. Ourdealers are pathetic conniving individualswho often are as much victims of their ownaddiction as they are criminals: or they areoutwardly respectable selfish, greedy menand women who care for no one but

themselves, as they significantly supplementtheir income by supplying recreationaldrugs around the town. Whoever they are, whatever they are doing, we want to know.Ignore them and you may be passivelyimplicated in the downfall and lifelongmisery of yet another young person andtheir family.

Cannabis has a distinctive odour likenothing else. It is not particularlyunpleasant, but has been likened tounwashed feet. If you have never smelt itbefore, you will know it when you do.Quite a few years ago when cannabiscultivation on a commercial scale was muchrarer than it is now, some smart youngdetectives proudly bagged up their seizureof 40 or so plants in front of theiruniformed colleagues in Kidderminsterpolice station. They then went off to thepub for some mutual back slapping, and leftthe bags in the centrally heated CID officeovernight. The following day the stenchwas so strong that people were chokingand coughing and complaining of headaches.Rarely have so many officers spent theirentire shift without coming back into thestation. Curiously though, the rather fieryDCI that we had at the time was pleasantlymellow for the next few days. On a highwith his officers’ success no doubt!

From the Registers

Any old deeds?Despite having written a book on early Bewdley, I am still passionate aboutWribbenhall and am currently trying towork out where everyone lived in 1901. I have lots of gaps in my information onproperties. So if you have some pre-registration titledeeds in your possession, would you bewilling to let me have a look at them? Even if your house is modern, the ground itis built on has a history.I live at 23 Stourport Road (tel. 400691),which is a modern bungalow, but near itstood the Highwayman Cafe.Who remembers that?

Heather Flack

A number of us from the Parish attended theCompassionate Communities Conference organised by Kemp Hospice at Stourport CivicHall on 18 March.

The aim of the day was to discuss support and care through the end of life. We heard howthis issue will become more prominent in the next five to ten years, as the projected increased number of people dying (post-war baby boomers) coincides with a decrease in theworking population and cuts in public spending.

We were challenged by the keynote speaker, Professor Allan Kellehear (Professor of Sociology, Bath University), to imagine whole communities – not simply a community’s directhealth services – really caring about its members’ health and social well-being and to thinkabout that care being extended to the dying, death and to all losses, including deaths of identity and belonging.

The conference was extremely stimulating and gave members of the NHS, hospices, housingorganisations, charities, faith groups, local schools, social groups and individuals the opportunity to share ideas, knowledge and best practice, as to how local networks of careand compassion might be built up.

We now await with interest to see what next steps are proposed by Kemp Hospice who areleading on this project for the local area.

Community News

Dear Editor,

I feel I have to comment on the letter in Community News, March “Bridge”, in whichC.S.O. Nicholla Fice tells us, “We haven’t got agang culture in Bewdley, and certainly do nothave uncontrollable kids. No one has an ASBO,because no one deserves one.”

I think she must be living in a different place tome!

We in bungalows on Lyttleton Road are regularlydisturbed at weekends by a gang of vandals, notonly banging on our windows and doors, but also

throwing eggs, tomatoes and other rotting fruitat cars and over our gardens. Yes, C.S.O. Fice, generally there are some good kids about, butdon’t try and tell us that nobody deserves anA.S.B.O. Sort them out now, before they becometomorrow’s real criminals.

Yours sincerelyA.B. Whatton

Dear Bewdley Bridge,

I would just like to say that tonight a lovely Community Support Officer called Nikky walkedme and my brother home from Bewdley, becausemy mom was ill and she could not come andpick us up in the car. She said she would walkus home because it was dark and she wanted usto get home safely.

Thank you very much NikkyFrom Darius Lewis age 10.

SHIVER MY TIMBERS!Up above your heads as you walk by St Anne’s Church, some members of the church havebeen working in the roof space installing a walkway that will provide safe access to the roof. The great solid oak beams still bear the marks of the builders who first worked up there.Thankfully, they are no longer covered in pigeon droppings, many sacks of which have recently been removed from this area. Several interesting finds include evidence that thechancel – the part of the building behind the war memorial – seems to have been built on ata later date as a bit of an afterthought.

PENN & COACCOUNTANTS

ELDERLY TAX PAYERS You may be entitled to a tax refund.

H M Revenue have recently written to tax payers who received a repayment in previousyears, advising them that they are no longer required to complete a tax return. This is misleading, as tax repayments will be lost if no return is submitted.

We have successfully secured repayments for clients who erroneously believed that their af-fairs were correct.

If you have received tax repayments before, speak to Nigel or Tim, who will advise you freeof charge, whether a submission would prove beneficial.

MMMMaaaayyyy iiiinnnn tttthhhheeee FFFFoooorrrreeeessssttttIsn’t it wonderful how the changing seasonsstrike us as fresh and new each year, no matter how many years we have seen! Thearrival of the May blossom is one such delight, covering the ordinary hawthornhedges with masses of white flowers tingedwith the softest pink and with a heady aromawhich passing insects won’t fail to notice. Itwill be “all systems Go” now: the woodlandflowers such as violet, bugle, yellow archangeland bluebells using all their attractions to entice pollinators, so that they will success-fully set seed; the insects themselves workinghard to find food, mate and lay eggs in theshort season available to them. Into the picture come all the various insectivores andother carnivores, the herbivores; - each organism feeding on and providing food forsomething else – the whole web of interactions that go on in every natural habitat.Humans too have a part to play in the unfolding story and we can help or hinderdepending on how much we know and careabout what is going on and whether the actors in the drama are seen as friends orfoes. As in gardening, we can work with nature or in spite of it to achieve our aims

but should realise that our choices have consequences. We may have to sacrifice thatperfect herbaceous border, pristine golfcourse or productive plantation to keepthem. Many songbird species are in troubletoo, lacking feeding grounds free of pesticidesprays and nesting sites undisturbed by agriculture or recreational activities (that’s uswith our feet and mountain bikes). TheForestry Commission’s Visitor Centre andDiscovery Centre at Callow Hill aim to caterfor the public’s recreational and educationalneeds, and by doing so in one area of the forest to minimise any damage to more sensitive areas.

Old St Anne’s SnippetsChurch or Theatre?

Originally St.Anne's was dedicated to St. Andrew, being renamed after being rebuilt. Entrancewas by a flight of steps leading from the street, above several houses. The old chapel wasused for some curious purposes, such as the performance of strolling players and actors. Apparently there was no other building large enough in the town for the gathering of such acrowd. So the church was frequently a theatre where stage plays were enacted. A writer ofsome three hundred years ago in describing a parson of the day said, "He gets over it as fastas he can gallop, for there are games to be played, or a bear or bull to be bated, or an interlude to be played, and if no place else can be gotten, it must be done in the church".
