MISSION TO PERU - Part 3Lima was the busiest and most tiring part of our trip. The city is grey, damp and 5 of its 8million population live in pueblos jovenos (shanty towns). Our days were packed with visiting the various missions and church schools situated in the most dirty, poverty-stricken areas you will find anywhere in the world. The social action projects run by thechurch and missions included feeding programmes for children, pre-school groups, childhealthcare and development work, a centre for disabled children, community building work, and knitting/sewing/handicrafts (which provide a livelihood for the women). At one pointwe formed a human chain across a steep hillside helping move rocks to clear an area forthe community to extend the mission building.

Some of the missions/churches, balanced on rocky hillsides in the shanty towns, were verymuch ‘work in progress’, some were mere shacks with sides open to the elements; otherswere quite well founded but very simple buildings.

We took with us over £5,000 (the result of our fund-raising, including the Art Exhibitionheld in St Anne’s last June) and 160 finger puppets (made and donated by the charity Ted-dies for Tragedies). We used the money to purchase footballs and art materials locally, andto pay for the nutritional drinks and food for the feeding programmes in the shanty townsin Lima. The remainder will be used in some of the community projects we visited. Thepuppets found homes in the schools and the orphanage and will be used by the mobile‘Play Bus’, which tours round the missions, and by the priest who visits the isolated com-munities in the Colca Canyon.

I was able to spend some time relaxing beforereturning to England after a truly remarkable time inPeru. Lyn Fox

Another new year, another set of expectations and resolutions thatprobably won’t make it past the middle of the month – but here’s my firstresolution: I’m going to take more notice of people’s talents. I’ll start bysaying I reckon last month’s Bridge was one of our best for quite sometime, so well done, David, and why don’t you do the magazine for thenext few months? Then I can go on holiday somewhere warm (I amwriting this in that extreme cold snap just before Christmas) and justread the Bridge online from my laptop, as I sit on some sandy shore. Well,OK, perhaps not, but it was nice to have a break. Particularly as someone in China decidedto hack into my emails and send out a lot of invitations to look at another website.Apologies if you were one of the unlucky recipients. Fortunately the Bridge address is quitesafe, so there wasn’t any difficulty getting together plenty of interesting things to read thismonth.

We hear how our shopkeepers see us customers, where to eat this month, and whatTransition Food is about; and of course, inside this month is lots of what The Bridge doesquietly but efficiently, which is to let us know what’s happening in the town and what we canfind to do; even in the iciest weather!

So whatever the weather is like during January, may we all have a happy new year.

The New Seasonat the TIC

We come across some amusing situations atthe Tourist Information Centre and our visitors never cease to amaze us. Last summer we had a couple visiting for thefirst time and who were pleasantly surprisedwhen we told them that admission to theMuseum was free. After about an hour and ahalf they came out saying how much they’denjoyed it, but asked “what had happened tothe cars?” We thought they were perhapsreferring to the old fire engine that used tobe there, but they kept going on about expecting to see a large collection of cars. Itwas then that the penny dropped. It wasn’tBewdley Museum that they thought theywere at but Beaulieu National Motor Museum in Hampshire. They were about 150miles in the wrong direction. Slightly redfaced, they looked at each other, smiled andsaid, “Well, never mind; we thoroughly enjoyed your museum, we’ll save Beaulieu foranother day.”

January sees us getting ready for the newseason and this year we are introducing a tailor-made ordering service for UK holidaybrochures. Request any brochure and wewill arrange for them to be sent direct toyou. Not only will this be more environmentally friendly, it will also help toreduce our carbon footprint.

So please call in and see us or telephone01299 404740

or [email protected]

to order your 2011 UK holiday brochures.

Lions Duck Race 1 January 2011Just a reminder about the Lions Annual Duck Race taking place onNew Year’s Day in Bewdley. Hiring a duck costs £2 and registration is a further £1.Registration starts at 10 a.m. Please register early to avoid largequeues and to ensure a prompt midday throw-in.As with last year home-made ducks are welcome and eligible for the ‘Best Dressed Duck’Competition, but will not be registered for the Race on the river unless they arecompletely bio-degradable. Please try not to make ducks from polystyrene and plasticbottles. The Lions know our environmentally conscious youngsters understand theimportance of keeping our river clean. The Wyre Forest Canoe Club manages to rescuemost of the yellow plastic ducks. The Lions want as many entries as possible as the more money raised the more funds areavailable to support good causes. This year a major project has been supporting the WyreForest Talking Newspaper in its change to digital format. Come along on New Year’s Day. Enjoy yourselves and help us to help others.

WaterToo easily taken for granted

Drinking water needs to be clean – sometimes easier said than done.

South Wales rivers used to be black from washing the coal. (Was the Severn below Ironbridge any better, a hundred years ago?)

Then someone found that good old starch could be used to help settling muck out of dirtywater. Starches, tweaked a bit, are still used to do the same job. Fancier modern variants ofstarch do an even better job.

These materials are used on river water to get the mud out, before the water goes into ourpipes.

And on the subject of dirty rivers: Brummies in exile - remember the River Tame? I’m toldthere was an old, grimly accurate, joke:

“What’s the difference between the River Tame and a new penny?”

‘Fraid my penny hasn’t dropped yet. Any ideas? Al Curmist

Questions, Questions – and answers!

In the last month, I have helped a pensioner challenge her tax bill, a single mum calculatewhether she can afford to go back to work, an employee challenge his company’s attempt tohalve the hours he worked, a man threatened with homelessness access help and supportfrom the army veteran’s association, SSAFA, and a bereaved husband deal with the forms hehad to complete. I am not some kind of super-charged social worker but a volunteer atWyre Forest Citizens Advice and this is just a small sample of the problems, which peoplebring to their offices in Kidderminster, Stourport and Bewdley every day.

When I offered my services as a volunteer just over a year ago, it was with some trepidation– I knew next to nothing about benefits, employment law, housing or dealing with debt andwondered how on earth I would be able to learn it all. I quickly found out that I don’t neces-sarily need to: each office has on-line access to an exhaustive database, which either gives theanswers to all these problems, and many thousands more, or helps me work out where theycan be found. Nor I am expected to solve all these problems alone: trained and experiencedsupervisors are on hand to provide signposts and fill in the gaps in my knowledge, as are myfellow volunteers – most of whom have a lot more experience than me.

A year in, I can honestly say it is one of the most satisfying and enjoyable things I have everdone. Helping people work out how to solve what, to them, seem intractable problems isimmensely rewarding while the sheer variety of issues I have to deal with in each session isexhilarating, and certainly keeps my brain in working order. There are regular social eventslike the annual lunch, taking place next year, and quiz nights. We might have to add match-making to our services as two of our volunteers have just got married.

CAB is always on the look-out for new volunteers and, because we try to help as many peo-ple as we can, our workload is expanding. We are particularly keen to have new people joinus at the moment both as trainee advisors and also to help with administration and recep-tion duties. Volunteers should be able to work at least six hours a week, although the timesand locations are flexible. We welcome people of all ages, backgrounds and experience.

or check out the volunteers section of the CAB website, www.citizensadvice.org.uk.or telephone 01562 60194 where you will find more information

It’s official:Arty is a qualified Guide Dog

Since hearing officially of Arty’s qualification, Ihave had the pleasure of chatting to Gill,Arty’s owner. He is living on the Isle ofWight, taking Gill to work, getting to knowPippa, Gill’s retired dog and digging up Rydebeach! Arty is Gill’s fourth guide dog and hassettled well. When the dogs have beenplaced, some owners change the dog’s nameand a B now starts his name, so before longhe will be used to Bart!

Gill is totally blind and I found it very humbling when she thanked me for all I haddone walking Arty, and amazing that, at twoyears old, he was giving someone the abilityto live an independent life.

Now Frazzle will be over a year old in January and I must prepare myself for hermove into formal training. She continues tobe a pleasure to have and I know that manyof you will miss her too. I’m hopeful that shewill adapt to her new routine well and ofcourse become a qualified guide dog. Mythoughts occasionally turn to puppy number3 - this puppy walking is addictive.

I wish everyone good health and happinessfor 2011.

PPrreesseenntt PPrroobblleemmss aanndd SSoolluuttiioonnssSo, Christmas is over and you may be wondering what to do with those plants that arrivedas presents and now may be looking a bit sad.

AAmmaarryylllliiss

Place the potted bulb in a warm place with direct light; the ideal temperature is 15 to 16 degrees C. Water sparingly until the stem appears, then gradually water more until flowers appear in 7-10 weeks. After theamaryllis has stopped flowering, cut the old flowers from the stem andwhen the stem starts to sag, cut it back to the top of the bulb. Continue towater and fertilize as normal through the summer, allowing the leaves tofully develop and grow. When the leaves begin to yellow, cut them back to

about 2 inches from the top of the bulb and then remove from the soil. Clean the bulband place it in a cool (5-10 deg C), dark place for a minimum of 6 weeks before replanting.

PPooiinnsseettttiiaa

Examine the soil daily, and when the surface is dry to the touch, water the soil until it runs freely from the drainage hole in the container. If a saucer isused, discard the water that collects, so as not to leave the plant standing in water. A wilted Poinsettia plant may drop its leaves prematurely, so check the soil frequently. Plants exposed to high light andlow humidity require more frequent watering. If wilting does occur, immediately water and 5 minutes later water again. Place your plant near asunny window, preferably not north but where it will have the best of daylight. Do not let any part of the plant touch the cold glass as this may injure it. To keepthe plant in flower, maintain at a temperature of 10 to 20 degrees C during the daylighthours and move it to a cooler place at night. Root rot problems are more prevalent atlow temperatures so avoid going below 10 degrees C. Keep away from hot or cold drafts, which may cause premature leaf drop.

Double-glazing for £5....It needn’t cost the earth.

My firm belief is that it is down to us all to do what we can about global warming and notleave it to “them” whoever they are. Hopefully this corner will become a place we can ex-plore together practical things that we can all do here in Bewdley.

Let’s start by saving energy (and money) in our homes. Quickest payback comes fromthings like sealing gaps between floor and skirting, jacket for hot tank, insulation for mainhot pipes and draught proofing. Depending on your starting point these could pay forthemselves within one year and floor insulation, cavity wall insulation and loft insulationwould be not far behind.

Typically 10% of heat lost from homes is via windows. Single glazing leaks heat faster thanany other building material in normal use: add draughts round windows and we can soonbeat 10%. However replacement double-glazing costs a lot and will take years to pay for it-self. If you live in a rented or listed building, this limits your options considerably. Haveyou considered double glazing film from about £5 per window? It looks very like cling-filmand is fixed in place using double sided tape. The wrinkles are removed by warming with ahair dryer. Fit it onto any clean, dry surface, dealing with each opening section separately, unless you are absolutely sure that there is adequate ventilation elsewhere forgas fires, boilers, etc. A number of different brands are available: try local shops first, DIYstores (e.g. Screwfix, Wikinson and Wickes) or online.

Next month find out here about Transition Bewdley and the volunteers who will soon beready to meet with you, to help you calculate and compare your carbon footprint and toexplore ways of lowering your energy use.

If you have any comments, suggestions, etc for future articles, please write to the GreenCorner at the Bridge.

Mystery DinerBuilt in 1610, and nestling in the heart of HighStreet in Bewdley, is the fantastic Bailiff ’s House. What a transformation from a 'pub' to an exquisite'Bistro'! The property is now an elegant sophisti-cated place to eat, and to enjoy the company ofyour friends.

We were escorted up the narrow, low-roofed stair-case to the superbly decorated and transformed, very busy and full restaurant to our table, wheredrinks were served, overlooking the High Street, inthis quaint old town.

The menu, from Soup, Scallops, Risotto or fish dishes, was beautifully presented, and mymain course of Venison with rosemary infused potatoes and parsnips, was in a class of itsown. My fellow diners also enjoyed a Seafood platter, a superbly cooked 28 day old dryaged Fillet Steak, while my final guest indulged in the Guinea Fowl. The desserts were ofequal standards, including Bread and Butter pudding, Creme Brulee and a very temptingChocolate Torte. The usual cheese and biscuits, coffee and tea followed.

This place has really changed, and all for the best. The eye for detail from the stone blastedbrick work, and fine carvings to the exposed wood work of this fine 17th century building, beautifully fitted out with natural rush matting, and very modern lighting, all adds to the joyeven if you only pop in for a drink on your way home, or a quick drink on a cold frostylunchtime

They also do a Sunday Lunch menu, with the traditional Roast Beef or Lamb, so l think thatwhen we get the festivities over, another visit in January is on the cards, with a long walkalong our river walks afterwards.

Free guided walks along our footpaths andbridleways taking 2-3 hours, off the roads andinto the countryside.

On HoldThe phone in the shop needed attention from BT. I rang them andof course, I was put on hold.

As I waited, Marjorie popped in for the flowers for All Saint’s church. She took them, we chatted about her news and she went.Greensleeves played in my right ear. The disembodied voice told meseveral times that my call was important to them. A man came inwanting to read our gas meter. “We haven’t got gas here, let alone a

gas meter”, I told him. He went too. Greensleeves changed to Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Theystill thought my call was important, though obviously not important enough to do anythingabout it. My mother-in-law came in to ask if I wanted anything from Sainsbury’s while shewas there. I wrote a list and she went. Anthea came in about a dog needing a home. “Notme” I told her. As she went out, I gently replaced the receiver. Another time, perhaps. Cat from Bewdley Blooms

What’s Going On?St Anne’s Church in the centre of the town hasbeen shrouded in scaffolding for over two monthsnow. So what’s going on up there?

“More than we expected, is the answer to thatone,” says the rector, Rev Keith James. “All thisyear we have been in the process of making surethe church had a “dry hat and boots“ by improvingthe gutters and drains, pigeon proofing all its ledgesand checking the roof. Unfortunately when the workmen started the lastbit of the process they discovered that the towerroof has been leaking for years and needs replacing. It’s taking every penny the church has saved but weknow it has to be done.”

Specialist workmen, hidden behind the parapet, have been replacing disintegrating timbers with newEnglish oak and ensuring that no water can get inanywhere.

Robert Smith, a member of the committee overseeing the work, said “It’s a particularly trickyjob because of the church’s unusual position. It forms a sort of roundabout in the town andtraffic goes all round us; the workmen have to allow for that. But we’re hoping to have everything done and the scaffolding down soon after Christmas.”

So we can all be sure that the Christmas star that goes up on the tower every year, will beshining down Load Street next year too.

I spent a happy afternoon toiling over a hot hob in myeyrie last month. The reason: to prepare a dish for theTransition Food Group meeting at the Baptist church. My beef rendang and spiced rice – a classic Malaysian dishtaught to me by a chef on Langkawi Island a few yearsback – wasn’t really appropriate, as the Transition group is

about promoting localisation. It is a tender beef dish with masses of spices and coconut;hardly local fare. But I did at least buy the excellent braising steak from Lickhill Farm Meats –cheaper than the supermarkets and twice as delicious.

The evenings are just getting going for the food group, run by Sara Hirst and Gill Holland andI hope they are going to become part of the monthly calendar for Bewdley food lovers.Everyone brings along a home-made dish and has the opportunity to listen to a talk and dis-cuss food matters. On this occasion it was a Friends of the Earth discussion about the evilsof destructive farming in South America by Steve Tonry. I can’t say it exactly made me feellike eating, so I’m glad we filled up beforehand, but it was certainly thought-provoking.

The talk at the December meeting was on a subject closer to home – “the Apple and CherryOrchards of the Wyre Forest” by John Iles of the Wyre Community Land Trust. What is really special about the evening, though, is the chance to share food with other Bewdley residents. Local angler and wild woman, Jo Bloom brought her home smoker and somemackerel – clearly not local either – and smoked them for us there and then. I took the leftovers home with me; they were so delicious. There were also a range of vegetarian andmeat dishes, salads and savories and special cakes and cookies. As a confirmed foodie, I lovethings like this but I reckon anybody would. You don’t have to be adventurous with yourcooking, just keen on eating local produce, so do come down to the next one and bringsomething tasty to show off your culinary skills.

The Holy Land Today

Journey with us in the footsteps of Jesus to modern dayIsrael and Palestine. An illustrated talk

by Heather Flack and Lynne Fox.Bewdley Baptist Church.

Wednesday 16 February 2011 at 7.30 pm. Refreshments available.

Tin TabernaclesRound the country you can find many anonymous corrugated iron buildings known as ‘TinTabernacles’. A hundred years later, these secretive places should have decayed out of existence. Between 1860 and the early 20th century, the rapid increase in iron, coal and leadmining resulted in vast numbers of people moving to remote corners of the land. These sudden new communities found themselves without a church.

The Anglican Church was loosing its grip on the worshipping public due to the spread ofnon-conformist movements such as Methodism and Wesleyanism. Their medieval churches, built upon medieval geography, often left them out of the reach of the communities they hadhoped to serve.

Therefore, the demand for cheap, transportable, temporary structures was immense. Stepforward the recently invented (1828) ‘Corrugation and Galvanization of Iron’ by British engineer Henry Robinson Palmer. The material’s increased strength and stability meant thataround a timber frame, buildings of any size from a garden shed to a cathedral could be ordered from a catalogue, prefabricated, flat-packed and shipped anywhere in the world.

Dubbed ‘Tin Tabernacles’ by the mocking ecclesiastical establishment, the term has outlivedmost of the buildings themselves. The majority in theUK was designed to last only as long as the local supply of ore, or until a permanent chapel could bebuilt. The surviving few exist on borrowed time. Those that have, are mainly still in religious use, although the vast majority stand derelict, perchedprecariously between structural condemnation anddemolition.

In Button Oak we have our own “Tin Tabernacle”,and supported by the National Lottery through ArtsCouncil England, on January 18th, a duo, Trevor Mossand Hannah-Louise are giving a folk concert as partof their nationwide Tin Tabernacle tour.

Winter conditionsWinter conditions

As I write, we are nearing the end of a week of exceptionally cold weather, and thesephoto were taken early December. A seasoned rower told me that in 27 years he has notseen the river like this, and, unsurprisingly, rowing is suspended until the river melts! Wehear stories of ice-fairs on frozen rivers, but until this year I had found this a difficult sce-nario to imagine. Now here, opposite our club steps, the water is frozen so that the birdscan walk about on it; and ice-floes cover the surface of the water. It is a beautiful and dra-matic sight, but historically icebergs and boats don’t mix! Melanie Gunn

Tails of a Veterinary PracticeLife at Riverside Vets as seen by

Gavin the practice cat.Hello all and a Happy New Year to everyone.

This month, it had been brought to the attention of my humans that theroad along Severn Side South has become somewhat dirtied with dog faeces. As veterinary professionals my humans all support keeping our streets clean and free ofdog mess. They can often be seen picking up any mess from in front of the practice and inthe archway at the side, but cannot be out and about, up and down the road as they arebusy working hard (I patrol downstairs occasionally to make sure of this). I have arrangedthat my humans will have some poo bags available free of charge in the practice receptionfor anyone who gets caught out by their dog and needs one. Please feel free to pop intothe practice and ask if you need a poo bag when you are out on a walk with your fourlegged friends.

Being a cat, I myself have no need of such things, as I have a litter tray and have my humanswell trained to clean it out twice a day.

More from me again next month, Gavin

Page 56: The Bridge - January 2011

Our wild neighbours have a hard time of it inthis harsh weather. Mice and squirrels go infor storing food in a small way, but otherwiseanimals have to adopt different strategies forsurvival in a season which offers only shortdays and low temperatures. Some, such asbats, toads, dormice and hedgehogshibernate, taking a lesson from the deciduoustrees. Life processes slowright down: a hibernatinghedgehog takes only onebreath every few minutesand its body temperaturedrops from 35 to 10degrees centigrade. Thebody fat from the gooddays of autumn is used upto provide the energynecessary to stay alive.Warm days can be a problem rather than ahelp, causing the animal to wake andtherefore have to find food. It’s a riskybusiness – there may not be enough toreplace the energy burnt up in the search.

The creatures who stay awake have to be

pretty resourceful, perhaps changing theirdiet or behaviour. Squirrels build winterdreys close to the trunks of trees towithstand storms and cuddle together insidefor warmth. Rabbits will dig up roots and

eat tree bark when other food is scarce, andI have seen clumps of ivy on a fallen branchcompletely stripped of leaves by deer. Thefox is ever ready to take advantage of a lapsein chicken coop security or a discardedtakeaway! Wood pigeons may form largeflocks in their search for food in thecountryside or take a more individual

approach andconcentrate on thegarden birdfeeders. Thisleads me to make aseasonal request onbehalf of our nativebirds: putting out foodand water will make abig difference to theirchance of survival thiswinter. If you can provide

a variety of birdfood in your garden you willattract a variety of birds: fatballs (or home-made bird cake) and mealworms will bringrobins, peanuts are a favourite withwoodpeckers, niger seed is popular withgoldfinches, sunflower seeds seem to attractthem all but are a particular favourite withnuthatches in my garden. Birds not onlyneed water to drink but also to bathe in sothat their feathers are kept in good conditionfor flight and insulation.

That brings me to the birds who have thebest plan of all – taking a holiday in theSouthern Hemisphere! If you’re not thatlucky you still have theforest to enjoy. Wrap upwarm!
