Bronia Jenkins, playing with Bernace De Young of Miami, won The Smith Life Master Women’s Pairs national title at the ACBL’s fall Championships in Providence, Rhode Island. Well done Bronia! The December Sectional was held on the 5 th -7 th and was a huge success with 170 tables played. At the meeting two new governors were elected, Don Tribus and Boots Van Nostrand. They are replacing Bill Poole who has served the past year as vice president and has contributed particularly to furthering our bridge program. Also being replaced is Don Brinkerhoff. Don has served as treasurer for an extended period and it is our hope he will continue to do so. For those who do not know, it is not necessary that the treasurer be a board member. We thank both of these men for their may contributions to the club. The members confirmed the prior action of the board in approving a one dollar increase in the playing fees for members and non-members to be put in place at a point in time that the board deems necessary. This action stems from a commitment to the bank that has financed in part the roof project. We expect to make a further appeal to our members for contributions to the roof project and the success of such an effort will be one of the elements governing the timing of the implementation of an increase in the playing fees. We are all disappointed that the re-roofing of our building is not completed or at least well underway. Most recently the delay has been caused by the rainy weather that has persisted. Work has at long last started, however, as of December 9 and we pray dry weather will continue. We know there has been some inconvenience in measures taken to accommodate the roofers and we have to expect this will increase when they are actually up on the roof. We ask for your continued cooperation and tolerance. We began collecting membership dues for 2015 on December 8,the day of the annual meeting. It is very convenient to pay and a great bargain at $25. Beginner’s Corner Trumping losers in dummy gives you extra tricks. Trumping in the hand with the long trump, usually declarer, does not add to your trick count. Declarer may have to trump a trick to take it, but it is not an additional trick. Declarer is south and holds the following hearts and clubs. Hearts are trump. Declarer Dummy clubs 6 872 clubs hearts AKQJ109 432 hearts There are always 6 heart tricks whether you lead hearts or trump clubs. However, trumping in dummy, the side with the shorter number of trumps, will give you extra tricks. Declarer Dummy clubs 642 9 clubs hearts AKQJ109 742 hearts After losing the first clubs trick, you can ruff (trump) two clubs in dummy which adds two tricks to the total number of tricks you take.

PLAYER PROFILE

MAUREEN HENDRICKS

Warm, tons of fun, great competitor and a megawatt smile. You probably guessed I’m talking about Maureen Hendricks. A fifth generation Washingtonian, Maureen moved a lot as a child. Her dad’s job took the family to St. Louis, Kansas City, New Canaan, CT and Paris. “Turning 16 in Paris was a kick”, she grins. After a liberal arts and business education at Smith, Dartmouth and Harvard Business School, she joined the commercial bank training program of Morgan Guaranty Trust Company of New York and stayed with that firm for 24 years moving through various divisions as the bank transformed itself into an investment banking powerhouse. She spent 5 years in London running Morgan’s European Equity and Equity Derivative business before returning to the NYC to run the Global Debt Capital Markets business. She was recruited by Salomon Brothers to run the Global Energy and Power group in 1997 and retired from there at age 50. She says that the most business fun she ever had was her final M&A deal representing Atlantic Richfield Company in its sale to British Petroleum for $26 billion. But she is not completely retired because she has sat on the Board of Directors of 3 public companies and is currently the non-Executive Chair of Fred Alger & Associates, the New York based growth stock fund manager. Time for family? She and John are the proud parents of Jennifer (33), Kate (30) and Alexandra (24). When asked how they found Vero Beach she quipped: “that was easy, I went online and looked for a place in the sun with a good school for Alex who was then entering middle school…that was St. Eds.” Now that the girls are on their own in NYC, John and Maureen have a bought a home in Beaver Creek, CO and spend their summers there.

MORRIS BRADT “Bud” was born February 22, 1922, of Vero Beach, FL , New York City, and Amagansett, NY, passed away peacefully on December 6th. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Peggy, his two sons George and Rick, and several grandchildren. Bud graduated in 1943 from Cornell University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army in WWII. The funeral will be Friday, December 12th at Frank E Campbell The Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Avenue, NYC 10028. He will be buried at Cedar Lawn Cemetery on Saturday, December 13th. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Bud’s name to the Amagansett Free Library or the American Cancer Society.

December Sectional committee: Jackie Wince, Martha Glassmeyer, Debbie Brower, Arnie Summers, Judy Melchiorre, and Karen Adelman

Golf and bridge have taken the place of the corporate ladder but she attacks both with the same enthusiasm. If you want to brighten your day, say hello to Maureen.
