Well good day folks. According to the calendar, we are now into the summer of 2020. Unfortu-nately, the weather man is not quite on board.

On the positive side we don’t have any smoke from forest fires. On the business side, the Breton R.V. Park is now fully open including washrooms. We do, however require guests to reserve their camp stalls. This can be done by phoning (780) 696-6558. Social distancing is also required.

Other business, Brother & Sister Elks were able to gather at the Breton Community Hall for their regular meeting on Thursday, June 18. At this time, we need to say a big thank you to Big Tee Management for the wonderful lunch they provided. Thank you Kathy it was deli-cious.

Some wood splitting took place at the R.V. Park and again thank you to two young outstandingmembers of our community Jack and Sam for their assistance. Thank you very much.

On June 28, Brother & Sister Elks and Bre-ton Royal Purple Elks gathered at Breton Golf Course for their year end B.B.Q. A big thank you to management of the Golf Course for al-lowing the use of the covered patio for the occa-sion. It was much appreciated. Due to weather condition, thank you Dana for your hospitality. Also thank you to Jack and Sam for assisting with the serving of the food.

This will bring to a close our business of the past year. It is our hope and prayer that every-one will be able to enjoy a healthy and safe summer. Be good - be safe, and we will chat again in September.

Greetings from the Elks

Local Musicians Release Rock Album

From Ben Tobiasson

On May 11, 2020, my brother Clint and I re-leased our first “rock” album and it’s based on the music we used to play in the ‘70s.

Clint and I have been working on this for a few years and had to dust off some old recordings to help us ‘remember’ how some of it went.

We released it under the Tunecore Label and it’s all over the world now. We are proud to say it was recorded entirely in the Warburg area. The new album is entitled “Fresh Tracks To-biasson Brothers”.

Many may remember Clint and I playing sock-hops in the gym in Warburg School. In later years Clint and I (hiring and rehearsing a drum-mer) played all over Western Canada with our band “Equinox”. We were mostly a smaller venue band.....the biggest bar we played was The St. Albert Inn before the bar was all chopped into pieces....would have seated about 500 people then. We BARELY had enough amplification on stage to play there. We have played some bigger venues (not a lot of them): Winstock 2016; Winstock 2019 and the reopening of the Sunnybrook Hall. Both the Winstock shows did have some amateur video done and we had some of them professionally produced.....unfortunately too late to replace the audio recording that we had released al-ready.

Our new album can be heard very easily on YouTube. Just search “Tobiasson Brothers” and find Fresh Tracks......play all. There are 12 tracks on the album and all of them Clint and I wrote and have performed live. This 70’s rock album and the recording are available on all major retailers: iTunes, amazon, etc..

Memories of District Nurses From Allan Goddard, Breton Museum

As a follow up to last week’s article about District Nurse Miss. Philippa Chapman, I thought it would be of interest to our readers to write about the diverse ser-vices carried out by these dedicated individuals often under very challenging conditions. In 2011 the Breton Museum developed a summer exhibit on District Nursing in the Breton, Lindale, Win-field, Pendryl and Alder Flats area called “A Picture of Health”. One section of the exhibit focused on the mem-ories of individuals in the community. The memories ranged from the near tragic to the humorous. The mu-seum was fortunate to capture these memories to assist us in the preservation of our community’s history. Below are some of the memories. District Nurses often took whatever method of trans-portation available to them to get to their patient. Bill Flesher recalls seeing D R Fraser Lumber Co. caterpil-lar go slowly past the Breton School pulling a stoneboat through the mud, at about three miles per hour. On the stoneboat sat Nurse Philippa Chapman on a kitchen chair, heading to a maternity case in Buck Creek. Several individuals spoke about the Travelling Clin-ic’s which travelled rural Alberta each summer during the 1930’s. The District Nurses would identify children who required teeth pulled, tonsils removed and other minor medical issues. A team consisting of a doctor, a dentist and two nurses would come into a commun-ity and set up, usually at a community hall, on the first day with the second day dedicated to the surgeries and dental work. On the third day the clinic packed up and moved to the next scheduled community. Harvey Van Ember from the Lindale area remembers the travelling clinic coming in the 1930’s to Lindale, although he didn’t have his tonsils removed… and was proud to say he still had his tonsils… the memory was seared into his mem-

ory yet. One individual could even remember the date and the year when he had his tonsils out at the travelling clinic in Breton. Annie Deacon (Impey) credits Nurse Helen Sabin of Winfield for helping save her life in 1955 when she was hit by a car in Winfield as she was coming out of a movie. Both legs were broken, with the left nearly severed and the other badly crushed, several on lookers cut a section of the wooden sidewalk to serve as stretcher to transport her to the nursing station, where Nurse Sabin controlled the bleeding until a make shift “ambulance” transported Annie to the Rimbey Hospital. The Doctor didn’t expect her to live and wanted to amputate her legs. Annie spent almost the next two years in hospitals and with many operations and rehabilitation recovered with her legs. Not all memories were tragic, but on the lighter side. Shirley Meade (Durstling) remembers being treated for pneumonia during the winter when she was about five years of age. Nurse Philippa Chapman scheduled a checkup in the spring. Nurse Chapman found Shirley splashing in the puddles in the ditch when she called to perform the checkup, instead of scolding her, Miss Chapman took her shoes and socks off and joined Shir-ley playing in the water. Finally, Vant Hayes attended school at the Saska-toon Valley School in the 1940’s. He remembers the nurse coming twice a year, travelling in a horse and buggy, wearing her nursing uniform. She would admin-ister vaccinations and give out cod liver oil pills. Vant remembers the bitter taste of the pills, a taste he could recall for years afterwards taking the pills. The photo below is of Inoculation day at Funnell School circa late 1940’s. Pictured in the photo is Miss Chapman and Gwen Hooks along with the students of Funnell School. Are you in the picture?

“Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances,

for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

It is certainly not always easy to give thanks, but it is the very thing we are called to do in or-der that we might see God’s will accomplished in our lives. Be joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; in the good times, in the not so good times, and even in the times of silence, for this is God’s will for us in Christ Jesus I know that many our question-ing what they should be doing right now, in this time of uncertainty. Well Paul gives us a pretty clear pattern for discovering God’s will for us.

Be joyful, be prayerful, and be thankful.....sim-ple yet powerful. What God can do with a people who are committed to those three things! So I encourage you to think of the many things in which you can be thankful, speak them out loud or write them down, pray for your life, for you families, children and grandchildren, thanking God for all that you have been given. I promise you this, it will bring joy to your heart and that my friends is God’s will for us in Christ Jesus!
