Pompeii was a Roman city thatwas in existence during Christ’s time.It was destroyed with-out warning about noonon August 24, 79 AD. Afew years earlier it wasrocked by an earthquake, but no one saw this as awarning that the citywould be destroyed byash from a volcano inthe future. Why is thisimportant and, why discuss it in TheBrethren Journal? I believe that theexperience of Pompeii has somethingto tell today’s Christians, and byextension the Unity, as well as us asindividuals.
Paul traveled near Pompeii on theshore of the Bay of Naples. Pompeiiwas not unlike other cities such asCorinth that we are familiar with inthe Bible and the cities that werevisited by Paul as discussed in Acts. What we can learn due to the erup-tion of Mount Vesuvius is how people
lived in these Roman Cites whenChristianity was in its beginnings.
As part of a recenttrip my wife, Jean and Iwere able to visit Pompeii. That visit brought sev-eral thoughts togetherthat are worth sharing.Although I had heardabout the devastation ofPompeii, I didn’t realizethe size of the city, which
is about 160 acres. Also, I didn’trealize the importance of this ad-vanced sea-front city (before the erup-tion) with a population that is esti-mated to have been around 20,000 ormore. The city was advanced by ourstandards and understanding. It hada hall of justice, paved streets withgutters, sidewalks, shops, religiousstructures, and sewage systems, aswell as a water system for the wealthyand wells for the not so wealthy. Ithad music, and a theater for every-

one that could accommodate 5,000people. The theater was open airwith a canvas cover to shade thespectators, and the theater was de-signed to reflect the sound of theactors so everyone could hear them.It even had public restrooms for thosein attendance. There were gladiators, and sports events such as foot races.
The city had a system of govern-ing and taxation like modern society. It also had a system of transporta-tion that accommodated both pedes-trians and carts or wagons withinthe city. The streets were paved withstones, and some of the stones werelight in color to allow one to see thestreet in the dark. Because the streetswere dirty and water by design wasallowed to clean and flow down them, cross walks had elevated stones withgaps between them to allow pedes-trians to cross the streets to thesidewalks and wagons to pass. Thestones were placed in the streets toallow the donkeys and the wheels ofthe carts to pass between them. Thisrequired regulations that specifiedthe width of the carts and the height
of the wheels to allow them to passbetween and over the pedestrian step-ping stones.
Just like today, they had fast foodrestaurants where you could buy acup of soup, have a drink, or have afish sandwich. By all counts, thiswas a modern city with modern con-veniences, diversity in its society, and acceptance of different life styles, including open gambling and broth-els. It was a rich community sup-ported and protected by the centralgovernment in Rome. The parallelsbetween Pompeii and similar citiesduring the time of Christ and after-wards are amazingly similar to whatwe experience today in America.Granted, the technology is different, but the things available to its citi-zens were not unlike almost any cityin America today.
When reading about how Christand the apostles went to differentcities to speak to the population, Iwondered how they would gather anaudience. Each city, just like Pompeii, had a central forum where scholarsand others could come and start
speaking. People would listen to whatthey had to say, and like us chang-ing the channel on a television; peoplecould go to different speakers tohear what they had to say.
So what lesson, if any, can welearn from the experience of Pompeiiin 79AD? One lesson is that we don’tknow when our time is up. Lookingat Matthew 24:36-44, Jesus talks aboutclues that will precede His secondcoming just like the earthquake thatrocked Pompeii years before the vol-cano erupted. He also clearly statesthat no one can predict the exacttime of the second coming. Verse 36states “No one knows about thatday or hour, not even the angels inheaven, nor the Son, but only theFather.” When Vesuvius eruptedaround noon, the people were eatingand drinking like mentioned in verse38. Although Jesus is referring towhat happened in Noah’s time, itapplied to what happened to thepeople of Pompeii. The people tookshelter in their homes or were caughtin the open, and due to the way thecity was destroyed we can see theexpression on their faces and theirpositions at the time of their deaths.
This lesson can also apply to Chris-
tians today. Like the people ofPompeii, we are fortunate to live in arich country where there is a stablegovernment, strong infrastructure, en-tertainment venues, wealth, and thefreedom to be just as diverse as wewish. Verse 42 admonishes us to keepwatch, because we do not know onwhat day our Lord will come. Verse44 tells us to “be ready because theSon of Man will come at an hourwhen you do not expect him.” It isdoubtful there were many, if any,Christians in Pompeii at the time ofits destruction, but if they had knowwhat was about to happen, do youbelieve many of those people wouldhave been doing some things differ-ently? Just as what happened to theinhabitants of Pompeii, we don’t knowwhen our end will come. Therefore,we as Christian individuals and mem-bers of the Unity need to carefullyconsider what Jesus is telling us inMatthew and be ready when we faceour Vesuvius, be it the second com-ing, or our individual mortality. Thegood news that can’t be stressedenough is, when that time comes,we as believers have the grace ofGod that nonbelievers don’t have.

Last week I was invited to attendthe Industry Brethren Church onNovember 7, 2010. It was a specialservice that honored Veterans andthose who were left behind. The churchwas full of over 100 worshipers whocame not only to worship, but to offertheir appreciation to the Veterans liv-ing and passed who have served andare serving to ensure that they couldworship. The service was respectfuland humbling for those of us who hadserved in the military. Candles werelighted and flags handed out by rep-resentatives from the Scouts. Not

only were those who served recog-nized for their service, but those whowaited and worried and prayed fortheir loved ones were appreciated. Itwas an all-inclusive worship servicethat will be remembered a lifetime.
Even a small church can do greatthings, be it appreciating those whoensure the right to worship or providehelp to those in need. Never underes-timate the contribution your church, regardless of its size, can make toothers. Industry didn’t, and they lefta lasting impression on everyone whowas in attendance.

In Christ’s Love . . . from the Mission FieldFrom the Thiessens…October 13, 2010On Death and Digging
Dear friends, In the last three weeks, we have
learned a lot about needing to lean onone another. Little baby Taylor died aweek ago Tuesday (the 5th), after twoweeks of heart-wrenching battle. Shedied, leaving us wondering what todo in even the simple steps of deathcertificates and burial procedures. Sothen the baby church that we wroteabout at the same time came to ouraid. Even though they are an infantchurch, they are a well-establishedclan in an old part of Oaxaca City, withmany contacts and an insidernetwork. They found a way to get aburial plot, and get all the paperworktaken care of. They helped with thecoffee and bread for the late nightprayer vigil at the funeral home. Theyhelped me and a couple other fellowsdig the grave Wednesday morning,
and gave us lunch afterwards. Theyhelped us work better in their culture.
It was odd for me to walk with thecemetery attendant through unkemptgravesites, searching for a suitablesite for Taylor’s body’s final restingplace. He wanted to squeeze it be-tween existing adult sites, to maximizefuture room. Finally he settled on acertain place, and we began to dig.Now it was my turn to help them.Perhaps not many of you remember,or even knew, that in my previous lifeI was a professional “ditch digger”.Actually, holes very much the size forcoffins, but to repair undergroundtelephone cable. I had spent four yearsperfecting the “best” ways to digholes. Now I was putting that skillinto practice again. So, as I shared theresponsibility with the other threeguys, I was giving them some digginglessons. Their natural way was verydifferent than what I had developed,so the morning turned into a friendly

“interchange” of shovel techniques.Even the type of shovel differed. Ihad acquired, somewhere along theway, a long handled pointed shovel, the kind preferred by Canadians. Theyhad short, D-handled flat-nosed ones.By about two feet deep, they were allquite convinced of the merits of theunfamiliar shovel, and were askingwhere to get one (not that any of usdo much digging normally).
In another “lean on me” (ormentoring) role, we have entered thelives of three other baby churchesforming, or perhaps better said, aboutto form once their leaders “get” thatthey can really be the church. In eachcase we are getting to play the part of“midwife,” encouraging new birththrough cheers of “you can do it,”and “push just a bit harder – it will geteasier soon.” An exciting characteris-
tic of these baby churches is that theyare already involved with other groupsin outlying areas that can also be-come churches as soon as the youngmother church’s leaders take the simplesteps of recognizing what God is do-ing, and has always been doing.
So pray for Phil and Eunice as theygrieve and begin to make new plans(to get involved with efforts to reacha group of Mixes). Pray for the babychurch meeting in Samuel’s home.Pray for Gerardo and Graciela, fatherand daughter, both dentists, who leada church in their home and will beformalizing the group in Claracordoba. And pray for Noel, an electricianfriend, who was abandoned by hisdenomination and is meeting in hisown home and helping a group orga-nize an hour away in the mountains.
Blessings, Robert

November 2, 2010This week our family has been re-
minded again of the goodness of God’sWord. This is the week of the “Day ofthe Dead”, when Catholic families layout food, flowers, and candles on al-ters to feed the dead who return tovisit. They spread a path of marigoldpetals from sidewalk to altar to leadthe dead home. They accompany thedead in the city graveyards in all-nightvigils lit by candles and accompaniedby solemn music. If they ignore thedead, they fear the consequences.
On Wednesday, when I went tovisit Linda, my bedridden grandmother-friend whom we baptized last year inrecognition of her trust in Christ, wetalked about what the Day of theDead means for her village.
“I am not afraid, you know,” sheanswered.
“What do you mean?” “I know the muertitos (the dear
dead) don’t come back and walk aroundlike they say.”
“How do you know that?” I testedher.
“I heard it on the Bible CD you gotme. They are asleep until the timewhen Jesus comes back. They arewaiting for the sound of his voice andthe trumpet, you know. I am not afraid.I am ready to go to Him any time.”
Linda’s simple trust in God’s Word alwayschallenges me. She is going against the beliefs andtraditions of her entire village, but it gives her nofear. She is so sure of God’s grace and power.
On Sunday our home church wasstudying Ephesians 5. Because wehad no music leader, we simply readthe chapter and let people offer prayersof praise, petition, and confession asthey felt inspired by the verses. Wehad to stop several times because ofthe conviction that ran through theroom. “I can’t read any more.” “I keepthinking I have it all down pat – untilI read this.” “I have been foolingmyself.” “This is for me.” God’s Worddropped us outside of anything wehad planned for that day. We hadconfession and forgiveness and shar-ing and the Lord’s Supper, and, afterthe meeting, “sent out for groceries

From the Kozaks…Greetings! - my dear friends in the
Lord! We are back home from theDecin ministry and from the weddingplace in the Pilsen (Plzen). We reallydid spend NICE time, MINISTRY timein those places.
The BEST was to see the develop-ing church planting ministry in thesuburb city Boletice. There were about70 people who could hear the Mes-sage, and about 25 did OPEN theirhearts to the Lord! Here are somepictures… (Mainly the KIDS werecute…
Marek and Peter (first members ofDecin Maranatha Church and nowElders) were preaching and had greattestimony. There were MANY friendsof Peter, who are STILL cheating androbbing people, as Peter did BEFORE…
It was so touching to SEE Peter, Rene(Decin Youth Leader), Marek, andothers as the ministers of God!
The altar call was touching andmany kids came… a few minutes after, their parents came, too. There weremany tears and prayers…
It was wonderful TIME! They willminister in that place each Thursday! It is a really NEEDY PLACE for theministry.
Also, the wedding ceremony was
and held a meal together” in goodMoravian fashion.
Tonight I taught the leaders of thenewborn church in Samuel’s househow to use the stories of the OldTestament to reinforce the teachingsof the New. We did as much laughingas studying.
Even as I write, many of our Mixtecbrothers in Guerrero have gatheredon this Day of the Day to hold anevangelistic campaign in Arroyo Prieto,Guerrero, bearing witness to the changeGod’s Word has made in them. Wehave been witnesses of these changesand have told them to you when wehave visited you. This letter is one ofpraise for how good God’s Word is inall cultures, in all ages, in all settings,in all circumstances.
Blessings, Anne

Save the date!
February 26, 2011, The Unity Foreign Missions Board is present-ing “T.E.A.M. Mission - “Together Everyone Achieves More!”atthe Hus Encampment from 9 am to 3pm.
Two years ago, we asked the question of our churches,“Where in the World Are You and Jesus Working?” As a commu-nity of churches we took a day like this one to meet and worktogether on strategies for answering this question. The strategieslooked at both local and foreign missions. Two years later we aregoing to take a day and concentrate this time on Foreign Missionsand how we can “work together to achieve more” in the missionfields we are already invested in and then explore new areas God iscalling us to.
So Plan Now to:Come connect and catch the excitement!Hear first-hand Tom Prohaska, Founder and Execu-tive Director of Fields of Faith, fresh from the fieldsof the Czech Republic and his vision for us to join inmore church-planting in the Czech Republic.Strategize with us for our new “Adopt A MissionaryEndeavor” in Mexico and ChinaHear Mark Ebert, Moravian Mission Board Mem-ber, Insights on Working Together

This month will focus on Gifts.
The verse for this month is:1 John 4:10This is love: not that we lovedGod, but that he loved us andsent his Son as an atoningsacrifice for our sins.
The Holiday season isupon us! This includes manyadditional activities – shopping, baking, wrapping, social events,Christmas programs andrehearsals. The list is neverending.
Christmas is often associated with gifts. Thismonth’s lessons and devotions are focusing on giftsand gift giving. As you shop and bake and decoratethis season, always remember the greatest gift evergiven… Jesus!
Also, remember other gifts that we havereceived from Heaven: Peace, Love, Hope

Teen Cabana
In Jerusalem at the time, there was a man,Simeon by name, a good man, a man who lived in theprayerful expectancy of help for Israel. And the HolySpirit was on him. The Holy Spirit had shown him thathe would see the Messiah of God before he died.
Here’s an older gentleman who must have beenas giddy as any child who has ever lived. He waited hisentire life for the first Christmas – and when it came, itwas the greatest moment of his life. Seeing the comingof the Messiah caused him to break out into a blessingto God. When’s the last time you broke out in praisearound Christmastime?
If the ‘burdens’ of Christmas are starting to weighyou down – maybe it’s time you took advice from theReason for the Season Himself: For an answer Jesuscalled over a child, whom he stood in the middle of theroom, and said, “I’m telling you, once and for all, thatunless you return to square one and start over likechildren, you’re not even going to get a look at thekingdom, let alone get in. Whoever becomes simple andelemental again, like this child, will rank high in God’skingdom. (Matthew 18:2-4)
That’s right – resurrect your childhood feelingsabout Christmas – or if you don’t have positive ones, then start over. If we as Christians don’t demonstratetheir excitement about the Christmas season – whywould anyone believe the Christmas message?
Relax in Port O’Connor at Kotrla’s Coastal Retreat!
Reservations: Contact Valerie at 361-920-4663, or [email protected] Yes – GREAT FISHING, too!
The GiftMaterials Needed: A wrappedChristmas gift, some small treatsor gifts to share with all children inthe class.1. EXPLAIN: In both the Old and NewTestament and in our lives today,it is not enough to know the factsabout Jesus. God wants us to havea relationship of love and faithwith Him. God wants us to KNOWHim and talk to Him and listen toHis voice. God wants us to livetogether with Him today. Just likeyou can accept or reject a gift, soit is with Jesus.
2. Hand the box to someone and say, “Here, I have agift for you.”(Let them respond and either take it or not take it.)3. (Ask the child:) What do you have to do to accept mygift? (Just take it!)If you are going to ACCEPT my gift, what do I want youto do?4. Receiving a GIFT & Receiving Jesus:Knowing about Jesus and hearing about Him doesn’tmean you received Him. How do you receive Jesus asGod’s special gift?5. Invitation:If anyone here today has not received Jesus as yourSavior, you can right now.
Make sure the child to whom you gave the gift knows heor she can keep it. Pass out some other small gifts ortreats for the other children to enjoy at this time.

Beautiful fall weather, a well-plannedschedule, meaningful study sessions, and congenial people all contributedto a very successful Primetimers’ Re-treat. The event was held, as has beenthe tradition, during the second week-end of October at the Hus Encampment.
Several of the participants arrivedon Friday evening for a relaxed eveningof fellowship.Others arrived in timefor breakfast on Saturday morning, and brought the total number of at-tendees to 52. It was encouraging towelcome several new participants tothe event.
Singing and mixer activities beganat 9 a.m. The theme of the retreat was“Fearless” based on a video series byMax Lucado. The Rev. James Hejl, retreat pastor, lead 3 study sessionsduring the day based on the videos. The overall focus was facing current

Welcome
Thoughts about giving…Remembering the Unity of the Brethrenor any of its ministries is a fittingtestimony of your belief. Your gift in awill can be a legacy that continues toaffect the Christian values, mission, andministry that is important to you.
You can give without restrictions and let us use thefunds for the most pressing needs or you can specifyhow, when, or where you want the funds used.
You can require that we hold the principle as anendowment and use only the earnings each year.
You can give in memory or in the honor of someone.
Your gift can be contingent. The funds go to someone ifthey survive you and if not, then to the Unity.
You can tell us now that you have named the Unity inyour will and allow us to express our gratitude…oryou can let it be known later.
There are many other ways to give. Contact anyBoard of Grants and Bequests member about whatyou can give and how you can give.

Needed: FRIENDS OF THE BRETHREN JOURNAL– from the editor
The Brethren Journal has been publishing life and activitiesof the Unity of the Brethren in Texas for over 100 years. All of theseinclude records of weddings, baptisms, deaths, etc., of the minis-ters... when they were submitted. These records are invaluable forfamilies who which to research their family history or activitiesthat have taken place in our congregations and the denomina-tion. It would be fitting, in the eyes of the Brethren JournalBusiness Committee, to ask for financial support for the continu-ation of this publication. If you wish to become a special FRIEND OF THE BRETHRENJOURNAL, please send your donation to the Business Manager,Cathleen Schlechte (address inside front cover). These donationsare tax deductible.
