Stud Staff training for the breeding industry held at The National Stud
Tabbi Smith, Training Director
CertEd, BA(Hons), MSc
05/12/2016
30
Aim today:
• Overview of the training offered at The National Stud.
• Primarily the Stud is a commercial stud farm.
• Largest boarding operation in Newmarket.
• We also provide stud work/skills training and that is part of our mission statement and fits with JC objectives.
The National Stud’s Training Department• A small team that complements the
commercial activities of the Stud farm
• Responsible for:
• Student recruitment, training and welfare
• Course management, development of new programmes and involved in industry wide training strategy.
• Training facilities and their use
• Training reports to the Board and The National Stud is highly regarded within the Jockey Club Group largely due to its training function and role.
05/12/2016
31
A lot of what we do is signposting or IAG,Information, Advice and Guidance, for people wanting to get into the
industry or wanting to improve their career prospects.
And then we provide access routes into stud work or related
industry roles by providing the training the industry wants for its
staff.
• Probably fair to say that most equine careers prefer applicants to have practical experience of some sort.
• They are industries orientated around practical skills and recognise practical experience as key for office based/administration roles.
• Particularly true for Thoroughbred careers
• Therefore programmes/opportunities that have realistic experience are immensely important.

“I took this opportunity because I thought it would be an advantage to be able to learn, while maintaining a full time job. I very much enjoy my job, being trained while earning a wage is a win winsituation for me.” Steven Skillington, Level 2 apprenticeship at Norman Court Stud
“I’ve enjoyed the theory side of the apprenticeship more than I thought. I feel I have gained a lot more knowledge about the breeding industry because I do more research than I did in the past. I have also gained more confidence in my written work as my assessor always gives me the support I need.”Yasmin Fish, Level 2 apprenticeship at Norman Court Stud
“I wanted to complete a Breeding apprenticeship because I wanted to learn how to work on a stud instead of a general yard. I like to be busy and wanted to be part of a team, I love working with horses and the fact I get a qualification is a bonus!” Vicky Hutton, Level 2 apprentice at Mildmay Stud
“I decided to do an apprenticeship because I thought it was the best way for me to learn and achieve a qualification whilst working with horses. I learn a lot easier practically, than theory based work.” Simone Worsley, Level 2 apprentice at Mildmay Stud
WHAT THE APPRENTICES SAY:
“Horse care apprenticeships are important for the breeding industry because they introduce students to an industry that requires a huge amount of knowledge from their staff, which is best learnt from practical experience.
This platform of training encourages attentive and knowledgeable grooms that have learnt their skills 'hands on', making them indispensable to Breeding establishments”Oliver Nash, Manager at Mildmay Stud
“It is important to invest in the grass roots of your employees. It is important to develop our young staff and help them achieve qualifications which they can further themselves with.” Paula Bevans the Yard Secretary at Norman Court Stud
