T hink your Valentine's gift ideas might be pushing the boat out? Try hiring a private jet for a dinner reservation, ordering 50 red roses with a hand-written

message on every stem, or flying 101 tulips to Paris for a proposal - just some of the Valentine's Day extravagances arranged by concierge service, Ten Lifestyle. But forget the air fares and grand gestures and give the gift of your beautiful self on February 14th. Whether you're cuddling up on the sofa for a cosy night in or planning an indulgent night on the town, treat your beloved with a smouldering look and captivating scents he will find irresistible. Recreate those first date butterflies and lip-locking moments. We've got all the beauty tactics you need to seduce your man all over again.

Pampered to perfection Bring some romance to the bathroom. Put up the 'do not disturb' sign and envelop your body with rose-scented products to get you in the mood for hearts and flowers with

your beau. Layering complementary products on your skin will make your scent even more alluring.

"Rose essential oil is renowned for its euphoric, feel-good factor, as well as its skin enhancing properties." Lather up in the tub with Lush's Love heart soap containing aphrodisiac oils, £2.50, and surround yourself with rose petals and candles. While you're soaking give your face the glowing look of love with Montagne Jeunesse's Passion Peel Off mask, 99p.

Keep skin touchably soft with Aromatherapy Associates' Renew Rose Massage & Body Oil, £33.75, or slather on Philosophy's Unconditional Love Firming Body Emulsion, £27.20, to keep love handles in check.

Seductive scent Get those attraction pheromones buzzing. With a quarter of men buying fragrance as a Valentine's gift, a sensual scent is clearly a priority for the opposite sex. "Choose a fragrance that you know will make him want to pounce. Woody, spicy, and musky notes are very alluring. But whatever your choice of fragrance, remember not to be too overpowering - you want him to be seduced, not knocked out!" If you do everything together as Mr & Mrs and want your scents to harmonise with each other try Oriflame's Intense Embrace for him and her, from £11.95 for 50ml. For a scent that's romantic yet feminine and playful, spritz on Lacoste's Love of Pink, £34 for 50ml.

Kiss 'n' make-up Unless your name is Alex Reid and you're dating Jordan, no man would choose a full-on glamour look over natural gorgeousness. Keep your date night make-up sultry but subtle. "Think candle light when it comes to skin," advises make-up a r t i s t V i c t o r i a B o n d (www.victoriabond.co.uk). "Romantic make-up is all about dewy gorgeous skin. Your eyes are the windows to a romantic's soul so keep them soft but dramatic. "Open them up with eyelash curlers and two coats of Max Factor Lash Extension Effect mascara, £10.99, in black - all the intensity of falsies without the hassle." Give your pout some attention with some conditioning treatment. Pucker up with Sealed With a Kiss cherry lip gloss, £3.95 from What's About Town. For a lip product that withstands snogging marathons, try Clinique's I Love Kisses Long Last Glosswear SPF15, £13, available at House of Fraser stores throughout February.

C lambering through a castle which sweeps up high above a steep hilltop in Northern Cyprus, I could see why its magical ruins are believed to have helped

inspire Walt Disney's film Sleeping Beauty. As I sat on a rock to recharge my batteries by St Hilarion Castle, I looked down on the fairytale surroundings below, including the labyrinth of rooms and tunnels which almost appear to have grown out of the rocks. British pensioners, especially, love the place - many escape the miserable UK winters and enjoy the spending power of the Turkish lira. They sit outside cafes, browse souvenir shops which sell local handicrafts such as lacework, rugs, pottery and jewellery, and read readily-available British newspapers. At the crossroads of three continents, Cyprus is known for its natural romance and charm. According to legend, it was once given to Cleopatra by Julius Caesar as a token of his affection.

The laidback Turkish side of the island has few traces of mass tourism. Northern Cyprus enjoys long, hot Mediterranean summers, when temperatures reach a very pleasant 35C, while winters are mostly mild. Citrus fruits thrive and olive trees blanket the mountains, surrounding villages which in many ways appear to have stood still in time over centuries. The unhurried pace is reflected in its nightlife, so think more of cosy bars and restaurants than the pounding club scene of the south. An obvious starting point in the north for any visitor is Kyrenia, with a distinctive horseshoe-shaped harbour boasting colourful fishing boats and a lively yet relaxed atmosphere. You can enjoy an evening drink outside one of the restaurants at the water's edge and take in the unhurried surroundings. Decent lunches, with drinks, cost little more than £8 per head.

Northern Cyprus The Med’s Best Kept Secret With its unspoiled natural beauty, Northern Cyprus, has much to attract backpackers,

whether they want to pull on a pair of sturdy boots to explore the coastlines, relax on the

uncluttered beaches or get up close among ancient archaeological ruins.

Page 9: The Bracknell Forester

9

My first stop was the Malpas Hotel, nestled in hills outside the village of Catalkoy and five miles east of Kyrenia. The hotel boasts two outdoor swimming pools, an indoor pool, steam rooms and even a casino. I also stayed at the elegant Colony Hotel, centrally located in Kyrenia and boasting a pool on the roof of the building with great views of the town, the coastline and the nearby Five Finger Mountains. Further afield, a few miles east of Kyrenia, stands the gothic abbey at Bellapais. The village is immortalised in the book Bitter Lemons Of Cyprus by Lawrence Durrell, brother of naturalist Gerald Durrell, which recounts his tales of moving to Cyprus in the 1950s. The building is one of the monuments to the numerous civilisations which have been established on the island. Travellers can take their time wandering through the narrow streets of Bellapais, with its boutiques and restaurants. In the main square, where locals stop and chat, stands what Durrell named 'The Tree of Idleness'. For a more energetic pace, visitors can make the exhilarating walk up to St Hilarion Castle. The views are stunning, but you really need a pair of sturdy, flat shoes to explore the hidden nooks and crannies - plus a bottle of water, although a small cafe near the entrance is useful to recharge the batteries on the way down. The stamp of different cultures over the centuries means that local food takes in a mix of influences. The traditional meze, made up of hot and cold appetisers including salads, meat and fish, is a particular attraction. Meals tend to be washed down with a Turkish coffee. For another authentic experience, try a traditional Turkish-style massage. Mine was fairly vigorous and without any of the lotions and potions you might find in a British spa, but it left me feeling great. Getting around by car is also straightforward for Brits, as motorists drive on the left-hand side of the road. Standard car

hire costs little over £20 per day. So why not delight yourself in a sunny climate virtually year-round and the lack of the over-commercialisation evident on many stretches of Mediterranean coastline - and hope others won't discover the charms of Northern Cyprus for years to come.

Key facts - Northern Cyprus Best for: Couples and families wanting a relaxed getaway from the usual tourist trail. Time to go: Weather is mild and pleasant most of the year. A good escape from cold, wintry British weather. Don't miss: Relaxing drink and bite to eat by the water at Kyrenia. Need to know: Stock up on water and slap on the suncream if you tackle St Hilarion Castle. Try to avoid midday heat. Don't forget: A stout pair of walking shoes and/or a pair of flat sandals to explore ancient ruins.

By Patrick Arundell H The New Moon in Aquarius is excellent for giving your social life a boost. Get to it at the start of the month and your networking habit will bring some fabulous friendships your way. Towards the end of the month you may be motivated to take a big risk. Make sure it is worth your while, and calculate how much you'll gain or not before you go ahead. You could be very lucky! Get off to a positive start early in February and make the most of the New Moon in your career zone. This is the best time to apply for new jobs, go for an interview, begin your new career or contract, or any other activity associated with your profession. Mercury moves in later on, which will encourage you to negotiate. If you need publicity, this is the time to get it. Seize your opportunity to travel far. The New Moon early in February will be a great omen for any journey you are about to embark upon. Whether it is a holiday, business trip or honeymoon, you will have fun in the sun. Mercury moves into Aquarius, encouraging you to explore any subject that holds a fascination for you. You may be able to increase your earnings as a result. Your finances are in focus this month. The New Moon at the start is great for re-organizing debts, arranging loans or other kinds of finance or investing if you have cash to spare. The Full Moon in Leo mid-month may coincide with a desire to splash out and purchase a few luxuries for yourself. Don't go mad, but do enjoy yourself. A golden opportunity also awaits you in the final week. Relationships are a big deal. Valentine's Day isn't the only day on which you can have fun - there are many more. The New Moon in your relationship zone early on brings a chance to take your relationship to a new level. You may want to commit to your lover and perhaps get engaged or even married. The end of the month brings a love affair made in heaven. Go for it! Are you keeping well? With a focus on your health zone, you may be wondering how you can develop a toned and tanned body that will be the envy of everyone. You are usually quite modest but you also find the idea of radiant wellness more attractive than anything, and actively look for it in others. If you take a risk at the end of the month you may be rewarded. Be bold!

Love happens out of the blue. You had better watch out as Cupid is on the prowl. There is an air of excitement around so expect the unexpected. The New Moon early on is perfect if you want to start dating after being alone for a while. It is also excellent for starting a new creative hobby or business. The Full Moon mid-month is a great time to party. Be there or be square! Are you selling your property, buying a new home or about to move? If so, try to do it as early in the month as you can. Your efforts will be well rewarded if you do. Meanwhile, the Full Moon in your career zone is perfect if you want to stand out from the crowd and get some publicity. You will be noticed, so keep your actions squeaky clean. One huge opportunity awaits you. It's a month for sharing ideas, getting in touch and clearing out the clutter in your office! If you want to talk to someone about your brand new brilliant idea, do so as soon as the month begins. You will set off on the right foot and success is practically assured. The chance to take a gamble presents itself later on. The outcome is uncertain, but you could be very lucky. Money makes the world go round, and the New Moon at the start of the month is perfect for new beginnings. If you want to buy something on credit, ask for a pay rise, reorganize your budget, get a loan or whatever, this is the best time to go ahead. But do take extra care around mid-month as the Full Moon may encourage more spending. Don't undo all your good work in one go! This is one of the best months of the year as there is a New Moon in your sign early on. You can use this to ask the cosmos for whatever you want as there is a good chance you just might get it. It is also excellent for new beginnings, whatever they are. Your intuition may alert you to the possibility of a big catch later in the month. Hang on and you will be successful. Jupiter is in your money zone and gradually makes a fabulous aspect to Pluto. You have a chance to fulfil one of your dreams, but as the aspect is challenging you need to be persistent and tread with care. You could get the reward you have been seeking for all the hard work as long as you are willing to move beyond your comfort zone. Your dreams will be important, so listen to them.

Ben Jackson, from Reading, is offering to supply and fit energy saving bulbs throughout

pensioners' houses for £10. He says he is hopeful that it will go a long way to helping pensioners

save money on lighting, which can be better spent on turning the heating up during the cold

snaps.

He thought it would be a good idea after visiting his own grandmother, who asked for Christmas

presents that would help her to keep warm, so that she didn't have to turn the heating up. "The

cost of energy efficient bulbs has come down dramatically with recent government subsidies, but

pensioners have not been kept informed, or often aren't able to fit the bulbs themselves. They

do not want to impose on anyone else by asking them, so many still haven’t taken advantage of

the reduced cost, and are still paying too much for lighting. This is something I hope can make a

difference for pensioners during this arctic winter we are suffering!”

Ben is available to fit bulbs in Reading, Bracknell, Wokingham and other surrounding areas. His

website can be found at www.rg1handyman.info or you can call him on 07833 938 973.

“Why does Berkshire have Search and Rescue teams,

we don’t have any mountains?”

earch S &

R escue

D id you know that the majority of search

and rescue in the UK is done by

volunteers? When a disaster happens,

or someone is in trouble at sea or in

the mountains, everyone looks to the

emergency services for help. The emergency

services rely upon the volunteers of the various

search and rescue charities to respond and

deal with the incident.

Without these volunteers the emergency

services would not have the manpower or the

expertise to resolve or respond to these calls for

help!

David Cameron introduced us to the “Big

Society” in the following way;

“The Big Society is about a huge culture change…

…where people, in their everyday lives, in their homes, in their neighbourhoods, in their workplace…

…don’t always turn to officials, local authorities or central government for answers to the problems they face …

…but instead feel both free and powerful enough to help themselves and their own communities.”

Prime Minister, 19 July 2010, LiverpoolPrime Minister, 19 July 2010, LiverpoolPrime Minister, 19 July 2010, LiverpoolPrime Minister, 19 July 2010, Liverpool

He was wrong!

Search and Rescue in the UK has had this

culture of volunteering for over two hundred

years and continues to do so. It started out with

local people helping themselves in their specific

environment.

So on the coast, long before the decimation of

the UK's fishing fleets, the main source of

income for the locals was fishing. The local men

would take to their fishing vessels to eke out a

living. And when they got in trouble there was no

one to call to come and help...

So the other fishermen would take to their boats,

or to old rowing boats, and set out to sea to try

to help or rescue those in peril. These men, and

often women, would risk their lives to save their

friends and colleagues because they never

knew when they would need that help

themselves.

Likewise in the mountains if you got into trouble

you had no mobile phone to call for help; you

relied upon yourself and your friends. If that

didn't work fellow mountaineers would come

together to launch a search and rescue mission

because, again, they never knew when it would

be them in need.

“ There are over 200,000 missing persons every

year in the UK. “

Page 17: The Bracknell Forester

17

olunteers

Thus the lifeboat charities –

did you know that there are

over 60 independent

lifeboats around the UK's

coast as well as the RNLI

boats? - and mountain

rescue teams were born.

There are other forms of search and rescue

though; all born from locals helping locals out in

times of need. Here in Berkshire, one of the two

main search and rescue teams was created

primarily to help the local council authorities out

during what are now termed civil contingencies;

flooding, gas leaks, severe weather and major

incidents.

South East Berkshire

E m e r g e n c y

Vo lunteers (now

known as SEBEV

Search and Rescue

Team) was set up in

1980 to provide

trained volunteers

willing to help others in times of need. In the

same way that local fishermen would go to the

aid of their colleagues, and mountaineers would

go to the aid of fellow mountaineers, SEBEV

volunteers would go to the aid of local people

when Bracknell and the surrounding areas were

in need!

In the early 1990's, however, another group of

local people were found to be in need of

assistance and lowland search and rescue in

the UK was born here in Berkshire.

Lowland Search and Rescue is the search for

vulnerable missing persons. There are over

200,000 missing persons every year in the UK.

Most are found quickly and safely and the vast

majority of the others are in little danger; they

just want to get away.

However, a very small number are deemed

vulnerable (or high risk). This means that

because of their mental state they are in

danger. It may be that their age or mental

health means that the normal environment we

take for granted; our roads, parks, streams and

fields, is, in fact, hazardous and they may come

to harm there. It might also be that their mental

state makes them a danger to themselves.

The vast majority of these vulnerable missing

persons come from three distinct groups;

children, people with dementia and suicidal

people.

Whilst it is generally obvious that missing children

are at risk, they are actually at the least risk of

the three. Those at most risk from the

environment are those missing persons with

dementia, who because of their mental

condition may be working from a cognitive map

that doesn't resemble the ground they are

walking on.

Missing persons with dementia can walk for

hours and hours aimlessly; unfortunately they

can also fall into ditches, streams and walk into

thick undergrowth and become stuck.

It is in situations like these that

the volunteers of the two

Berkshire SAR teams – SEBEV

Search and Rescue, and

Berkshire Search and Rescue

Dogs – respond, with that

historic culture of helping

others in your community.

Bringing specialist search

techniques developed over

the years and volunteer manpower that the

emergency services just can't match, these two

search and rescue teams, respond day or night,

to find our missing loved ones.

B illingbear is a little gem of a place. It is situated on the

Straight Mile between Wokingham and Twyford within

easy reach of Binfield, Bracknell, the M4 and A329M.

It is the only course of its kind in the area, having 18 tees and 9

holes on the old course, with a beautiful par three golf course on

the same site. It is a family run course, and Martin and Jacquie

Blainey together with their son Gregg can often be seen in the

clubhouse or on the course. The business boasts an excellent

website www.billingbearpark.com.

Greenfees are very

reasonable so that regular golfers return

often to enjoy the great facilities at

Billingbear. There is a friendly “roll up” on

a Wednesday and Friday morning where

you can join in with the banter and fun.

Beginners are welcome to play on the par

three course before graduating to the main

course.

The log cabin style clubhouse is small, cosy

and friendly. Home cooked food is served

daily from 9am ‘til 2.30pm, and hot and

My name is Lucy Eleanor Brown and I am a London

based photographer; I grew up with a photographic

background as both my grandfathers and my father

were keen photographers, which meant I had access to

cameras from a very young age. At 18 I became an

assistant to a photographer for Kodak Weddings, which gave

me my first taste of wedding photography. When I was

where I found my first client during my first year of university.

I did in-house work as well as advertising campaigns for my

A Message from Berkshire Search and Rescue Dogs

We hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year. Berkshire Search & Rescue Dogs was

on call all over Christmas and New Year but luckily we weren't called upon on those key

dates! Since the beginning of December the team has attended 2 callouts in High Wycombe

and Oxford and also been placed on standby for calls in Sussex twice.

Over the last couple of months we have had a few things going on within the team which

have kept everyone busy. As you may have seen in the local papers, we were very lucky to

be donated an amazing £1000 from Christie EMEA. Nick Bye, one of our members, high-

lighted our good work and the company felt that we deserved a very generous dona-

tion. This money was spent on a first aid course for quite a few of our members, which paid

for itself when Jo, Iain, Janice and Jo’s dog Dillon located a missing person in Penge!

December saw the quarterly National Assessments held in Berkshire. A huge congratulations

to Iain Lewis and Mist who achieved their Level 2 air-scenting qualification and to Jon Rumbol

and Woody, Graeme Rumbol and Murphy who all gained their Level 3 air-scenting qualifica-

tions. All are now looking forward to their next search when they can put these new qualifi-

cations to the test!

If you were out and about at The Look Out on New Years Day and saw a very large pack of

dogs and people wandering around, you probably saw the team and friends all out for what

is becoming our annual walk. This is either held on Boxing Day or New Years Day to walk off

some of those extra calories and give the stars of our team a good exercise after a few days

of being spoilt. Everyone had a lovely time and all dogs were suitably worn out.

If you do see any of us out and about this year please do pop over and say hello as we are all

a very friendly bunch!
