Notes from PCCC President - Dave Smith Greetings, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Feliz - Navidad to everyone and I hope all is well. WOW Christmas is here and soon it will be Grill 57's New Year’s Day cruise. The time sure does fly when you’re having fun. Well things in our household are a little hectic (I'm sure no one else has that problem HA). Sold the Monte and cried when it left, tears dried up a few hours later when I acquired my new toy, a 1967 Chevy Pick Up (from Brian Anzak). I have been working 11 hour days and Saturdays, vacation cannot come soon enough. The Christmas party once again was a great time, I think everyone who attended had fun and had a chance to mingle with other club members. Rain and chill kind of put a damper on Toy’s for Tot’s as well as the Candle Light Tour in Raleigh. It was good to see many members brave the elements to attend both functions. All and all I think it has been a very good year for PCCC, the car show was the largest we have had in a long time, and Hilltop Home was blown away by the contribution made by the club. A grand total for the year was $8,000.00 and well appreciated. Well here is wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, hope to see many members New Year’s Day at Grill. IT ALL STARTED WITH - By Jay Shealy

My first Chevy was a 1966 Corvette. I believe I paid $2500 for it in 1976 in Bucyrus, Ohio. It

had a removable hardtop and a black soft top. It was pulled out of a barn in very rough condition.

The motor was supposed to be a 327, but I later discovered it was a 350 with popped freeze plugs.

It had Thrush side pipes, Hurst 4 - Speed, leaky gas tank, leaking brake calipers and rusty Cragars.

There was a 3 foot hole in the rear deck and mice nests under the seats. The flip headlights were

glassed over with lights mounted into the grill. The picture shows me inflating the flat tires with a

bicycle pump. It was great..

I had a friend teach me how to repair fiberglass and fixed the large deck hole and many body

cracks. I stripped the paint in a one car garage and had it painted the green 1970’s color. I added

new interior parts, chrome tubular side pipes, clutch, Crane Cam, and new U-Joints. I was so

proud and even got to carry Miss Ohio contestants in a parade.

Bit shortly after with the gas crisis, a new house with no furniture, and starting a family, it was

sold for $4000. That was good money and I even made a bit. I was actually glad to sell it at the

time. Doing all the work myself, that car really gave me an education.

Now, this is one car I wish I still had.

FEATURE ARTICLE

The History Of Gas Pumps

The first gasoline pump was invented and sold by Sylvanus F. Bowser in Fort Wayne, Indiana on September 5, 1885. This pump was

not used for automobiles, as they had not been invented yet. It was instead used for some kerosene lamps and stoves. He later

improved upon the pump by adding safety measures, and also by adding a hose to directly dispense fuel into automobiles. For a

while, the term bowser was used to refer to a vertical gasoline pump.

Many early gasoline pumps had a calibrated glass cylinder on top. The desired quantity of fuel

was pumped up into the cylinder as indicated by the calibration. Then the pumping was

stopped and the gasoline was let out into the customer's tank by gravity. When metering

pumps came into use, a small glass globe with a turbine inside replaced the measuring cylinder

but assured the customer that gasoline really was flowing into the tank.

In the 1900s-1910s the gas pumps were hand pumps where you had to have a great deal of arm

strength, not only to pump your gas, but also start your car!

In the 1920s the “visible” gas pumps were created. These were very TALL pumps. The amount

of gas was selected and would fill a transparent glass tank at the top of the pump so the

customer could “see” the quality of the fuel and the color of the fuel. Fuels were colored

different colors to indicate the grade of the gasoline and to avoid the dangers of using the

wrong fuels for cleaning purposes. The colored fuel allowed for yet another method of branding for customer

loyalty to specific oil companies. Creating customer perception of quality was crucial for the expansion of oil companies, so

marketing of the superiority of products was extensive. Names such as “superior” and “marvel”, “super” and “best”, “mighty” and

“deluxe”. Glass bowls were affixed to the top and lit up, advertising the brand.

1930s still had the bowl at the top of the pump, but the "visible" glass tank was gone. Now, the measuring method was the “clock

face” scale that would weigh the amount of liquid. The 1940s introduced the first iteration of the shape of pumps we are more

familiar with, simple rectangular posts, however several versions still have the globes on top as they were more eye catching that

way and again, allowed for brand recognition. These were called the calculator pumps due to the rolling numbers.

The 1950s ushered in the current era of gas pumps, shorter, stockier pumps with the rolling numbers to indicate the amount of gas

being pumped. The pumps of the 60s and 70s were minor modifications of the prior models, becoming more squat and the rolling

numbers eventually being replaced by digital displays.
