SOCIAL STORY
State Theatre New Jersey is delighted to
welcome you to our Relaxed Performance of
Barnstorm Theatre in The Bockety World of
Henry & Bucket. This charming production
features two friends who live in a playful
world where ordinary pieces of junk become
a car, satellite dish, toothbrush, and more—all
through the power of their imaginations!
Through Henry and Bucket’s relationship we
can what friendship is, what happens if it goes
wrong, and how you fix it.
This Social Story will help you and your child
prepare for your trip to the performance,
from arriving at the theater to watching the
show, all the way through to leaving at the
end of the show. There are also discussion
questions and suggested activities to help you
make the most of your experience.

State Theatre New Jersey—creating extraordinaryexperiences through the power of live performance.
WELCOME! 2
I am going to Crossroads Theatre in New Brunswick
to see a show!
The show is called
“The Bockety World of Henry and Bucket.”
“Bockety” is a funny word!
It means crooked or wobbly.
THE BOCKETY WORLD OF HENRY & BUCKET SOCIAL STORY 3
THE BOCKETY WORLD OF HENRY & BUCKET SOCIAL STORY 4
In the show I will see Henry
and Bucket.
They are good friends.
They live in a
junkyard.
There is a lot of
junk!
This is Henry. This is Bucket.
THE BOCKETY WORLD OF HENRY & BUCKET SOCIAL STORY 5
I will be going to the show with
We will have a lot of fun!
THE BOCKETY WORLD OF HENRY & BUCKET SOCIAL STORY 6
I will go to the theater in a
car or on a school bus.
I will get out of the car or bus
in front of the theater.
Or I will park nearby and walk
to the theater.
THE BOCKETY WORLD OF HENRY & BUCKET SOCIAL STORY 7
If I go to the show on a bus,
I will wait quietly until it’s time
to go into the theater.
THE BOCKETY WORLD OF HENRY & BUCKET SOCIAL STORY 8
I will go into the theater.
There will be a lot of people
at the theater.
I must stay with my parent or
teacher so I don’t get lost.
I can go get a drink from
the water fountain or
use the bathroom if I
want to.
THE BOCKETY WORLD OF HENRY & BUCKET SOCIAL STORY 9
A helper called an usher
will tell me where to sit.
There are a lot of seats
in the theater!
I will go upstairs.
I can walk up the stairs
or use the elevator.
THE BOCKETY WORLD OF HENRY & BUCKET SOCIAL STORY 10
When the show starts I will
stay in my seat and watch
the show.
I will wait quietly in my seat
for the show to start.
When the show is ready to
start, the lights will get a little
darker. But not too dark.
THE BOCKETY WORLD OF HENRY & BUCKET SOCIAL STORY 11
Or I can take a break in a
quiet room where I can sit,
color, or do something else.
If I get scared or
things are too loud, I
can cover my ears,
use my iPad or my
headphones, or
squeeze a toy.
THE BOCKETY WORLD OF HENRY & BUCKET SOCIAL STORY 12
When the show starts, I will
see Harry and Bucket sleeping.
They wake up when the alarm
clock rings.
They take a pretend shower.
Then they pretend to brush
their teeth.
THE BOCKETY WORLD OF HENRY & BUCKET SOCIAL STORY 13
They heat up their food on a
clothes iron. How silly!
Henry and Bucket pretend
they are catching raindrops.
Bucket wants to have all the
raindrops.
Henry wants him to share.
Henry sings a song.
Bucket is annoyed by
Henry’s singing because he is
trying to read.
THE BOCKETY WORLD OF HENRY & BUCKET SOCIAL STORY 14
Henry and Bucket make a car
using pieces of junk.
It is not a real car.
They pretend they are driving
in their car. They are having
so much fun!
Then Henry and Bucket make
believe they are driving their
car in outer space!
They make believe they are
wild animals and a then a
witch. Bucket gets scared.
They are just pretending.
I don’t need to be afraid.
THE BOCKETY WORLD OF HENRY & BUCKET SOCIAL STORY 15
Then Henry and Bucket have
an argument. They get mad at
each other.
Bucket puts away the pieces
of the car. Henry does not
help him.
Bucket sits on the tires and
gets stuck. Henry helps him
get unstuck.
THE BOCKETY WORLD OF HENRY & BUCKET SOCIAL STORY 16
Henry and Bucket are
friends again!
They play music. They watch
the stars come out in the sky.
It is nighttime.
Henry and Bucket to go to bed.
When they go to bed, the
theater will get a little darker.
It won’t be dark too long.
THE BOCKETY WORLD OF HENRY & BUCKET SOCIAL STORY 17
When Henry and Bucket fall
asleep, the show will be over.
Then the actors will bow to
the audience.
I can clap and cheer if I liked
the show.
Then the audience can ask
the actors questions about
the show.
If I want to ask a question, I
will raise my hand and wait
until I am called on.
THE BOCKETY WORLD OF HENRY & BUCKET SOCIAL STORY 18
Going to the theater is so
much fun!
When the actors are
finished answering
questions, I will leave the
theater and go home or back
to school.
BEFORE THE SHOW
Show the children the pictures of the show on the
next page. Ask them:
• What can you see?
• Where do you think Henry and Bucket live?
• What are some things you might expect might
happen in the show?
Discuss what it’s like to go to the theater.
• Have you ever gone to a theater before?
• If you have, what was it like? What did you see?
• What was it like to be a member of the
audience?
• What is the difference between watching a
show on TV or a tablet and watching a play
onstage at a theater?
• How do you behave differently at the
performance of a play in a theater? Why?
QUESTIONS FOR AFTER THE SHOW
• Who were the characters in the show?
• What did they do?
• Where did they go?
• What were some things that Henry and Bucket
did that showed they were good friends?
• What were some things they did that made
them angry or hurt their feelings?
• What did they do to stop being angry and be
friends again?
EVERYDAY OBJECTS
Tell children that there were many objects in the
play that Henry and Bucket used in ways you
wouldn’t expect them to be used. Can they
remember any of them? [examples: computer
mouse as a real mouse, car antennae as
toothbrushes, clothes irons to heat the beans]
Find some everyday objects around the classroom
or house: sheets of paper, cans, buckets, hats,
boxes, hairbrush, pencils, etc. Have children
improvise different ways you could use an object.
[examples: roll a piece of paper into a tube and look
through it like a telescope; hold a hairbrush by the
handle and ‘sing’ into it like a microphone]
DRAW WHAT YOU SAW
After the show, have children decide what part of
the show was their favorite. Have them draw a or
paint picture of that scene. You can even have them
put themselves into the scene, interacting with
Henry and Bucket.
