PRINCIPAL’S REPORT This week, our school celebrates Education Week with the theme of Every Student, Every Voice. We are extremely fortunate at Armidale City Public School where our students are provided with a wide range of opportunities, through the commitment of our staff, to use their voice. At the special assembly on Monday afternoon, our students explained how their voices were heard. We also presented the Semester 2 Student Representative Council members with their badges, with students from Kindergarten joining the SRC for the first time this year. Our SRC has an active voice in our school.

Our congratulations go to the recipients of our Education Week awards who have demonstrated their commitment to our school over a period of time: Student – Michaela Staff – Mr Commens, Mr McGrath and Mrs MacGregor Parent – Mr Simpson

This evening sees students involved in the major event for Education Week 2019, An Evening with ACOS. We have students involved in the massed choir, orchestra and Aboriginal dance group, as well as our school performances in the Stage 2 dance group and Stage 3 musical item. Our thanks go to the staff and students who have committed their time to ensuring the success of this event. I would particularly like to acknowledge Mrs Kelly for her amazing coordination of this special event for all public schools in Armidale.

It is extremely important for student safety that parents collect students from the courtyard near the bistro at 8.30pm and do not go to Madgwick Hall to collect students. We ask that you follow the instructions of staff in this regard.

Let’s Hang It! Last Friday night I had the honour of attending the University of New England Student Acquisition Art Prize: Let’s Hang It! 2019. Currently, an exhibition of the artworks of the 73 finalists, from the 576 entries, are being displayed at the New England Regional Arts Museum. These are on view until Sunday, 18 August. Kaitlyn from 3/4C was awarded a Certificate of Distinction for her entry, Boggart Pocket. Kaitlyn is congratulated on being recognised.

Tummy bugs and Whooping Cough about In this past week we have noticed a large increase in the number of students suffering tummy bugs. There are a number of viruses that can cause diarrhoea or vomiting. Please seek medical assistance if your child develops a rash, shows signs of dehydration or the symptoms continue beyond a couple of days.

Hand washing before eating and after using the toilet is the best method of reducing the spread of diarrhoea and vomiting. Children should not be attending school if they have diarrhoea or vomiting. Please send a note to explain the reason for absences or ask for a medical certificate if you take your child to see a doctor.

In addition to this, we have been notified of a suspected outbreak of Pertussis (whooping cough) at our school, and we are aware of more across Armidale. Whooping cough is spread easily by coughing, and babies are at risk of severe illness if infected. Older children and adults can often get whooping cough too and they can pass the infection onto babies.

Anyone with symptoms of whooping cough should see their doctor early for diagnosis and treatment. It's especially important to see a doctor early if your baby is unwell.

Your GP can provide more information about whooping cough and vaccination.

If you or your child has been diagnosed with whooping cough - stay away from work, school or childcare until your doctor tells you it's safe to return (normally after 5 days of antibiotics). This means that there is less chance of passing the infection on to other people.

Please let the school know if your child has been suspected of whooping cough and needs to stay home. We can discuss the opportunity to submit an exemption from attendance for the period that you are awaiting confirmation of the disease or for the antibiotics to work.

Over the next couple of day’s there is a severe weather warning predicted, please keep a close check on your child if they suffer from asthma.

School Readiness Evening Parents of prospective Kindergarten students in Armidale are invited to attend a school readiness evening at the Armidale Bowling Club next Monday, 12 August at 6pm. Presentations will be made by staff of pre-schools and principals of the six government primary schools. We will be staying around at the end to answer any questions that were not answered. This is a wonderful opportunity for our community.

Our next P&C meeting is next Wednesday evening, 14 August at 6.30pm in the school library.

Have an amazing week. Ms Deborah Nay

Principal

SEMESTER TWO SRC

In the spirit of partnerships and our 5 C’s, UNE Discovery teamed up with Armidale City Public School in the July school holidays for the inaugural school holiday LEGO Challenge!

Thirty five participants, aged between 7 and 12 years, arrived in the ACPS CoLab space at 9am excited to see thousands and thousands of LEGO bricks and mini-figures waiting for them and their imagination. The students gathered 9 themes to inform their build, and picked out of a hat which theme they would focus on for the day. The themes to build to were; Space, Deserted Island, Rainbows, Seasons, The Circus, Star Wars, Fairytales, Treehouse, and The Desert.
