• Also called the bubonic plague or simply The Plague
• Killed 25 million people between 1347 – 1352 AD

Victims had headaches, nausea, aching joints, fever of 101-105 degrees, vomiting, and a general feeling of illness. Symptoms
took from 1-7 days to appear. The main symptom was enlarged and inflamed lymph
nodes (around arm pits, neck and groin).

• Ring around the rosy: rosary beads give you God’s help
• A pocket full of posies: used to stop the odor of rotting bodies which was at one point thought to cause the plague. It was also used widely by doctors to protect them from infected patients.
• Ashes, ashes: the church burned the dead when burying them because to laborious.
• We all fall down: we all die!

Before the Black Death, music was happy and
frequently heard. During the Black Death music was
played very grimly or never played at all. The only
exceptions were people who decided that since they were
going to die anyway, they might as well spend the rest of their life in happiness. The
somber change in art and music demonstrated the grim
reality of the world around
them.
