Societal Change in the 1700-1800s
Before 1750: Agrarian Society
• Almost all members of society farmed or hand-crafted goods for trade.
After 1750: The Industrial Revolution
• With new energy and transportation, society begins to become more involved in manufacturing than farming and crafting.

• Limited to local printers, creating localized print materials such as Newspapers, Flyers, Pamphlets, etc.
• Books were in high demand, but still scarce.
The Small Print Shop
Still uses printing technology from 1500 A.D.

Development of New Fonts
• Most new fonts are blocky, with Serifs.
• “Three Dimensional” fonts are a big hit.
• No Script or Cursive Fonts.
The Sans Serif Font
• Introduced in 1838.
• Created an uproar in the print community.
• Not widely used until after the Civil War..

The Broadside
• Printers began to create the Broadside: “A type of printing created on large paper, designed to be plastered to walls”

graphics.• Blocky fonts. • Minor
Ornamentation.• Included ALL
information regarding event, in fancy terms.
