Map in the Trunk

T ake the first exit. That will get you

home.”

I had just finished hanging out

with my friend Brenda in Hagerstown,

Maryland. Now I was heading to my home

in Columbia, Maryland.

In a time before GPS and cell phones,

all I had to get me home were Brenda’s di-

rections and the map in the trunk of my car.

After I’d been driving for about 20

minutes, it started getting dark, but I kept

going, confident that I would soon see a

sign for my exit.

What I saw instead was a sign welcom-

ing me to Pennsylvania! I stopped the car

and pulled out my map. Yup, I had gone the

wrong direction.

Sometimes we treat our Bibles the way I

treated my map. We keep them out of reach

while we rely on people to guide us on our

spiritual journeys. I learned that day that

even well-meaning people can send us in

the wrong direction if we’re not paying

close attention to our map—the Bible.

Glass catfishThe glass catfish is a popular aquarium fish that comes from the

rivers of Thailand. They have no pigment, so their body is completely clear. You can easily see the heart and other organs located near the head. When the fish is very sick, it turns milky white.

Human eyeTwo parts of the human eye are completely clear: the

lens and the cornea that covers the lens. They have no blood vessels, which would interfere with the light coming through them. Instead, their cells absorb oxygen directly from the air and from the liquid inside the eye.

As their name indicates, jellyfish have jellylike bodies that are made up mostly of water. Their body structure makes it easy for them to stay afloat, but it’s a good thing they’re so hard to see—because they can’t move very fast.

Glass shrimpAlso called ghost shrimp, these shrimp are

handy to have in your aquarium because they eat the algae that makes a tank look dingy. If you look closely, you can see their meals travel through their bodies.

If you could see through the skin of humans the way you can see through Saran Wrap, it would make it easier for doctors to see what is making us sick. But the

inner workings of people are hidden, just like their thoughts. When we let people see our true thoughts, we call it “being transparent.” Back when the church

members in the ancient city of Corinth wondered if there was some hidden reason the apostle Paul wasn’t coming to visit them, he promised that he was being transparent. “I can say it with a clear conscience: In everything we have done in the world, and especially with you, we have had an honest and sincere heart from God,”* he told them.

What about you: Are you brave and honest enough to let your friends see inside you?

The Impossible Paper Fold

Try the following using a church bulletin or other piece of paper. (Make sure nobody needs the bulletin!)

1. Fold the paper lengthwise in half and crease it down the middle.2. Draw three lines as shown, and cut them.

By Randy Fishell

3. Twist under the right half of the paper as shown and gently recrease this section.

4. Move flap B back and forth.

Now show your folded paper to someone who doesn’t read Guide and see if they can figure out how you did it.

I ’m going to make pancakes,” I an-nounced to my family members, who were content to settle for a

boring breakfast of cereal and toast.“OK,” Mom agreed, absentmindedly

crunching on her granola.I stood on my toes and reached for

the pancake box, just out of reach on the top shelf.

“Need some help?” Kimberly asked, raising a skeptical eyebrow.

“Nope, I can do it myself,” I told her confidently.

“OK,” she said, reaching around me for her perfectly browned toast. The pleasant aroma tempted me to forgo my present task and settle for toast instead.

Nope, I decided. I want delicious, fluffy pancakes today.

I frowned at the pancake mix taunting me from its lofty height. “I just need to use something as a lever,” I resolved. Grabbing a box of spaghetti, I wiggled the pancake box toward me until it started to tip forward.

“Got it!” I told my amused family as I held up my slightly

squashed trophy.“ You sure you don’t need any

help?” Mom asked, a smile at the corner of her mouth as she dipped her spoon into a sea of milk and chunky granola islands.

“I’m sure,” I said, clearing off the counter in preparation for my masterpiece.

After scanning the directions on the box, I decided they were way too complicated. I pulled out the Vitamix blender. Surely this would give me the same results.

I ignored Kim’s incredulous look as I dumped pancake mix into the blender and quickly plopped on the lid to trap the ris-ing powder from tickling my nose.

“ You really should follow the directions,” Kim advised as she put her dishes in the sink. “I’m certain they don’t say put the pancake mix in a blender.”

“I know. It says to use a whisk and slowly mix the dry ingredi-ents with the wet,” I poured the milk into the blender, “but I’m trying something different.”

“Different is not always better,” Kim countered, still skeptical.

“This will be better and faster,” I said defensively. “Besides, this is my project, and I’m doing it my way,” I added, making it clear I

didn’t need her opinion.“ Whatever,” Kim said with a

careless shrug of her shoulders. “Just don’t yell at me when they don’t turn out right.” She walked away.

I glared at her retreating back. What does she know, anyway? I frowned at the olive oil bottle and poured some in the blender.

Mom kissed the top of my head as she reached around me for the milk. Feeling a little better, I smiled at Mom and tossed in a dash of salt for good measure.

Flicking the blender on, I watched contentedly as the mix-ture pulled together. Well, sort of. Sadly, most of the flour stuck to the side.

Not to be deterred, I grabbed a spatula and proceeded to try scraping the flour toward the blade. I decided maybe it needed more liquid.

“ You keep stealing my milk,” Mom joked as I retrieved it from the table and poured some into the blender.

I laughed. “Sorry,” I said, watching as the mixture turned thin and gritty. I reached for the pancake box, but no matter how much more flour I put in, it still didn’t thicken the way it should.

My tummy growled. Who cares if it’s a little runny as long as it tastes good, I decided. I turned off the blender and rummaged through the cabinet for a frying pan.

“Oh, no!” I cried in despair.

The small one was dirty, and I didn’t feel like washing it, so I pulled out the big pan. I could make two pancakes at once. After all, that would be quicker.

We didn’t have a nonstick pan, so I improvised. “ Where is the coconut oil?” I asked Mom.

“It’s in the cabinet behind the honey,” she answered, putting the milk and cereal away.

I scooped a glob of coconut oil in the center of the pan and watched it run to the edges. It didn’t look like nearly enough, so I added some more.

When the coconut oil started sizzling, I poured in some batter. It spread thinly over the entire surface, so I poured some more. This was going to be the biggest, fattest pancake ever.

“Smells good,” Mom said on her way out the back door to walk the dog.

“Thanks,” I replied, returning her smile. I got the maple syrup out of the fridge and waited for my pancake to cook.

When the timer went off three minutes later, I found to my sur-prise that my pancake was boil-ing. Trying not to panic, I decided to give it some more time.

I impatiently waited another minute, then poked the spatula at the edges of the pancake. “Oh, no!” I cried in despair, realizing that it was burning on the bot-tom while the top was practically

drowning in coconut oil! How was this possible?

I quickly pulled it off the stove. It was ruined! I heard Kim’s foot-steps and knew I couldn’t handle her victory gloat. Sitting down on the floor, I started crying.

Kim walked quietly into the kitchen and handed me some Kleenex. Surprisingly, she didn’t say a word. Instead she went to the stove and picked up the spatula. I wondered if she could somehow rescue my pancake.

She gingerly poked at the pan-cake and then shook her head. “ We’re going to have to toss your batch out and start over.”

My shoulders sagged as I watched her scrape my pancake disaster into the trash. It resem-bled soggy cereal.

“OK,” I said as I got up and joined her at the stove.

“And this time we are going to follow the instructions,” she admonished, giving me a look.

“ You mean . . . no shortcuts?” I asked playfully, giving her my best puppy face.

Kimberly shook her head sternly, a smile curving her lips. “No shortcuts.”

N o fair! Trees are off- limits,” Spence called up to his younger sister,

Krissy, who was perched up in an old oak tree.

“Says who?” she asked, smil-ing. Spence just glared at her and stomped off toward his cat, Jada, who had been watching their game of tag curiously. He scooped Jada up.

“Says Jada. She can’t climb trees either.”

Krissy chuckled. “She’s always chasing rodents around the neighborhood, Spence. I’m sure she’s scurried up a few trees after them before,” she said as she swung down.

Jada had been brought to their family seven years ago as a stray in her adulthood, so no one knew her exact age, but Spence had claimed her the second he laid eyes on her. The two had been an inseparable pair ever since.

“ Well, that’s it for the game, I guess,” Krissy said, looking up at the darkening sky.

“ Yeah, because you cheated,” Spence replied, letting Jada

down onto the ground. Her ears and tail twitched as she focused on something in the bushes behind them and bolted after it. Their neighbor Mr. Maxwell came out of his house and waved to them. They didn’t see him often, because he was always traveling, but they waved back and watched as he opened up his garage and got his motor-cycle out.

“It’s gonna start getting cooler this week. Stay warm, you two,” he said, smiling at them as he put on his helmet, started the engine, and sped off down the driveway.

“Kids, time for dinner,” they heard Mom yell from the front door, and they both headed inside.

They had a delicious dinner that night of Special K loaf, mashed potatoes, and string beans.

Krissy and Spence cleaned their plates and got up to get their devotionals. It was a family tradition of theirs to do their nightly devotional while eating dessert. Mom said it was like having two desserts, one for the body and one for the spirit. Dad opened his devotional to the marked page as Krissy and Spence got back into their seats. Mom dished apple pie onto plates.

“Hope is a powerful thing,”

Dad started. “ We all need to have hope and faith in Jesus and trust Him to help us in our times of need.” Krissy and Spence listened and ate their pie as Dad read about a young boy who needed to have hope and faith in God to overcome his fear of heights.

“Spence, can you read the scripture, please?” asked Dad.

Spence eagerly scanned to the bottom of the page and read aloud. “Romans 15:13. ‘Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.’ ”

“Krissy,” Dad turned to her now. “ What we can learn from this?”

She sat back in her chair thinking for a minute, then re-plied, “That no matter what, we need to believe in Jesus to help us whenever we are in trouble or afraid, and always put our faith in Him.”

“ Very good. We need to always trust in the Lord to provide for us. And we need to lean on Him for guidance and understanding when we are afraid.” Dad closed the devotional.

“All right, go brush your teeth and get ready for bed,” he said. Together they dashed up the stairs.

Both their parents came in and kissed them good night.

They were about to leave the room when Spence shot up out of bed.

“Jada! She’s still outside!” He jumped out of bed and ran down the stairs, Krissy and their parents close behind. He ran out the door calling for her: “Jada! Jada!”

Dad came out of the house holding a bag of her favorite cat treats and shook it as everyone else called for her. After about an hour of searching, Spence flopped down on the ground and began to sniffle.

“Maybe Mr. Maxwell has seen her,” Krissy suggested.

“No, he left this evening on another trip,” said Mom.

“ We have to have faith,” said Dad. “Remember the Scripture message tonight? God is always with us, and He is with Jada. She probably got caught up hunting in the woods. I’m sure she will turn up tomorrow.”

Spence nodded and seemed to perk up a little at that idea. Mom gave a short prayer asking for protection for Jada and to give the family faith in Jesus that she would turn up.

Three days went by, and there was still no sign of Jada. Every day, in the

morning and evening, Spence would walk around in the woods calling for her. But as the days

passed, Krissy and her parents began to believe less and less that Jada would ever show up.

By the fifth day Mom told Spence that there was still no word from the Humane Society about Jada, but they had just gotten a litter of kittens, and the receptionist said if he wanted to take a look at them, he was welcome anytime.

Spence only furrowed his brow slightly and said, “Jada’s coming back. I have faith that she is coming back.” Mom’s eyes looked sad as she nodded, handing Spence a cookie as he went outside to look again.

By day six everyone except for Spence had given up hope. Night had fallen and the family was getting ready to have dinner when they heard a motorcycle coming up the driveway. Dad looked out the window.

“Mr. Maxwell’s back,” he said.Mom was ladling soup into

their bowls when they heard a knock on the front door.

Spence got up and opened the door to find Mr. Maxwell hold-ing a scrawny Jada.

“Is this your cat?” he asked as Spence, crying, grabbed Jada out of his arms and gave her a big hug.

“ Where did you find her?” asked Mom as they all crowded

I was a volunteer missionary on Sakhalin Island, once one of Russia’s worst penal

colonies, a place where prison-ers were sent. Some prisoners had escaped and were hiding in the hills. Anyone venturing there usually went in groups for safety.

My students often went into the hills to gather stinging nettles, burdock, and other edible plants. Once they invited me to come along. I missed the mountains and forests near my home in British Columbia, and so I gladly went with them. While they scrounged for who knows what, I became en-tranced by all the wildflowers. I did not even notice their voices getting fainter until I suddenly realized I was alone.

I called, but no one answered. I ran downhill in the direc-tion I thought they might have

gone, but there was no sign of them. I went back up to where I had last seen them, but noth-ing looked familiar. I wanted to ask someone for directions but didn’t know any Russian and was afraid of possibly meeting escaped convicts.

Finally I saw a woman and her young son coming down a faint trail.

“Gdye Komsomolsk?” I asked. “ Where is Komsomolsk?”

The woman pointed, and I started in the direction she indicated, but then stopped. The cold war was over, but many Russians were still hostile to foreigners. Was she trying to get me lost?

“Lord, help me,” I cried. When my tears stopped flow-

ing, I followed my original plan. I walked downhill. I found a barbed-wire fence and followed

When you take a close-up picture of something, you can see more of the detail. It is the same with relationships: the closer you are to someone, the more they know you and you know them.

James 4:8 holds a promise from God that the closer we get to Him, the closer He will get to us. In order to draw closer to God, we need get rid of anything that may distract us from Him.

Below are some pictures that are close-ups of everyday items that are found in most houses. Can you guess what they are? For an added challenge, take a couple close-ups of things around your house, and see if your friends can guess what they are.

I heard Monique ask you if you believed in God,” Sam Greely commented to Pete as the

two cruised on their bikes toward the steep path that the boys called Suicide Hill.

“ Yeah, well, you heard my answer then, right?” Pete pedaled his bike faster to get ahead of Sam.

“So you really don’t believe in God anymore?” his friend asked.

“No, I really don’t!” Pete ex-claimed.

Pete tried to put more distance between him and his friend. He felt kind of uncomfortable talking about it, but he hadn’t believed in God for three years.

Sam caught up with him and matched his speed. “So would you mind telling an old friend what that’s all about?” he asked.

“I wondered why you hadn’t been coming to Sabbath School.”

Pete didn’t really want to tell, but Sam was a good friend, so he slowed his pace and talked.

“It all started when I was in third grade,” he began. “I learned that year that there is no Santa. Anyway, after that I got to wondering about the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. Well, after I found out all three of those things were phony, that’s when I started wondering how many other lies I’d been told. And that’s when I began having questions about God.”

“But God’s different!” Sam began. “ You can read about Him in the Bible.”

“ You’re just say-ing that because you’re the pastor’s son.” Pete rolled his eyes.

“Pete, if we got in a bike wreck today and I got killed, I know that at the resurrection Jesus would raise me back to life, and I’d get to be with Him forever!” exclaimed Sam.

“Sam, I’m glad you like your religion. But it’s not for me.”

The two then approached Suicide Hill.

“OK, it’s my turn to go first this time,” Pete called out as he took off down the winding road on the hill. He knew Sam wouldn’t be far behind. A quick glance over his shoulder confirmed his suspi-cions.

He just loved the rush of this hill as he quit pedaling and began

concentrating on leaning into the curves. Finally the road began to straighten out, and before long Sam pulled up by his side.

“That was awesome!” smiled his friend.

“ Yeah, that’s still my favorite hill around,” Pete agreed. “Hey, why don’t we stop in and say hi to Roberto?”

Their friend lived just a short distance ahead on the left. The two pulled into the driveway and knocked on the door.

“Pete! Sam!” greeted their friend as he opened the door. “Come on in!”

“ You know I’d love to, but I’ve got to get home,” Sam said. “I just wanted to stop and say hi.”

“ Well, it was good to see you.” Roberto shook Sam’s hand before he left.

“See you later, Sam.” Pete shook his friend’s hand. “Next time it’s your turn to go down Suicide Hill first.”

“OK, we’ll see you then.”After his bike buddy left, Pete

hour later.“Go where?” Roberto asked.“ You have a soccer game in a

half hour,” his mom responded.“Oh, man, let me get my soc-

cer shoes!” the boy raised his eyebrows, then ran into his bedroom.

He returned quickly, and Pete walked with him out to his mom’s car. Pete’s mom got in the car and started down the driveway. She then stopped at the road and waved Pete around her.

As Pete passed the car he waved at Roberto and then turned left. The squeal of tires caught Pete’s attention as a van pulled out of a side street and weaved back and forth toward him. Pete wasn’t sure which way to go.

It all happened so fast that he didn’t have a chance to recon-sider whether or not he believed in God. There really wasn’t even time to pray, had he been a be-liever.

The next thing Pete knew, he was lying in a hospital bed. He heard voices talk-

ing softly beside him, but he felt a bit groggy, so he couldn’t make them out. After a while he real-ized the voices were his dad, his mom, and Pastor Greely.

“ What happened?” he asked. “ Why am I here?”

“ You were run over by a drunk

driver,” his dad explained.

“Oh, honey, it’s so good to hear your voice.” His mom’s eyes were misty as she tried to choke back tears.

A nurse then entered the room.

“ Well, look who isn’t hibernating anymore,” she smiled. “Peter, how are you feel-ing?”

“I feel like I’m sleepy,” Pete replied.

“ Well, you probably are,” the nurse nodded. “ You have several broken bones, so we have you on a lot of pain medicine. Young man, let me tell you you’ve been involved in a miracle.”

It was then that Pete remem-bered going down to Roberto’s house. He also began to remem-ber the conversation about God he’d had with Sam.

“Does Sam know what hap-pened to me?” he asked Pastor Greely.

“ Yes, he does,” responded Sam’s dad. “He told me to give this to you.”

The pastor handed Pete a

D uring the American Civil War a young soldier in the Union Army lost both his older brother and his father in the Battle of Gettysburg. The soldier de-

cided to go to Washington, D.C., to see President Lincoln. He had decided to ask for an exemption from military service so that he could go back to the family farm and help his sister and mother with the spring planting.

When he arrived in Washington, he went to the White House. Approaching the front gate, he asked to see the president.

The guard on duty told him, “You can’t see the president, young man! The president is a very busy man! Now go away, son! Get back out there on the battle lines, where you belong!”

So the young soldier left, very disheartened, and was sitting on a park bench not far from the White House when a little boy came up to him. The boy said, “Soldier, you look unhappy. What’s wrong?”

The soldier looked at the little boy and began to share his sad story. He told of his father and his brother being killed in the war. He explained that his mother and sister had no one to help them with the farm.

The little boy listened and said, “I can help you, sol-dier.” He took the soldier by the hand and led him back

to the front gate of the White House. Apparently the guard didn’t notice them, because they weren’t stopped. They walked straight to the front door of the White House and walked right in. After they got inside, they walked right past the generals and high-ranking officials, and no one said a word. The soldier couldn’t understand what was happening. Why didn’t anyone stop them?

Finally they reached the Oval Office—where the president was working—and the little boy didn’t even knock on the door. He just walked right in and led the soldier in with him. There behind the desk were Abraham Lincoln and his secretary of state, looking over the battle plans that were laid out on the desk.

The president glanced at the soldier and then looked at the boy with a smile. “Good afternoon, Tad. Can you introduce me to your friend?”

And Tad Lincoln, the son of the president of the United States, said, “Daddy, this soldier needs to talk to you.”

The soldier pleaded his case before Mr. Lincoln, and right then and there he received the exemption from the war that he desired.—Taken from More Hot Illustrations for Youth

LESSON 1: WAY TO PRAY, PART 1

Memory Text: “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). Our Beliefs, no. 11, Growing in Christ: “By His death on the cross Jesus triumphed over the forces of evil. . . . In this new freedom in Jesus, we are called to grow into the likeness of His character,

communing with Him daily in prayer, feeding on His Word, meditating on it and on His providence, singing His praises, gathering together for worship, and participating in the mission of the church.”

Read Thoughts From the Mount of Blessing, pp. 102, 103.

Corin has a friend who is struggling with her parents because they are getting a divorce, and the whole situation is getting ugly. Her friend seems bitter about God, but Corin really wants to pray with her or for her and show her that God can be a source of strength

and hope. She doesn’t want to drive her friend away, but she feels this is a great moment to talk honestly to God with her friend. What do you think she should do? What should she be careful of?

We live for Jesus because of what He has done for us and what He is doing in us. Since Jesus lives in us, we are to live as He lived—doing good and helping others. And we do this by staying connected to Him through prayer and Bible study.

How can you make prayer and Bible study a priority in your life?____________________________________________________________________________________

Unscramble the words in the word box and fill in the blanks with the correct words. oedeirmtpnnigdokmsrsdaknegionfrsvseeldidreveeocnvydee

“He has __________ us from the power of __________ and __________ us into the __________ of the Son of His love, in whom we have __________ through His blood, the __________ of sins” (Colossians 1:13, 14, NKJV).

The question isn’t whether we should pray or not—even those who don’t believe in God will pray when they face a moment of potential disaster. There are other people who repeat prayers all throughout the day, but still never really connect with God. The question is: What is the quality of the communication?

Jesus would steal away at night just to be able to talk with His Father in prayer. Jesus knew talking with His Father was worth more than sleeping. Think of a conversation you have had with someone that means the world to you—maybe a parent or a friend. That is what a conversation with God can be like.

Look up the following passages in the New International Version (NIV) of the Bible and fill in the blanks. If you don’t have the NIV Bible, you can go to Biblegateway.com and click on Passage Look Up.

1. “Very early in the ________, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a ____________ place, where he _________________” (Mark 1:35).

2. “In the __________, Lord, you ________ my voice; in the _________ I lay my _____________ before you and wait ___________________” (Psalm 5:3).

3. “__________ always, ____________ continually, give __________ in ____________ circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

4. “And ______________ in the ______________ on all _____________ with _______________ kinds of ____________ and _______________. With this in mind, be ___________________ and ______________ keep on __________ for all the Lord’s ____________________” (Ephesians 6:18).

5. “In the same way, the _____________ helps us in our ______________. We do not know what we ought to ______________ for, but the ______________ himself ____________ for us through __________ groans. And he who __________ our hearts knows the ___________________ of the Spirit, because the Spirit ____________ for God’s ______________ in accordance with the _________________ of God” (Romans 8:26, 27).

6. “By His __________ and His ___________, Christ has achieved even more than __________ from the ruin wrought through sin. It was Satan’s purpose to bring about an ___________ separation between God and man; but in __________ we become more closely __________ to __________ than if we had never fallen. In taking our nature, the ________________ has bound Himself to __________ by a tie that is never to be broken. Through the eternal ages He is _________________ with us” (The Desire of Ages, p. 25). [The Desire of Ages is online at egwwritings.org]

Have you ever wanted to pray but just couldn’t bring yourself to do it because it had been so long since your last conversation with God? The fear or guilt that keeps us from opening our hearts to God in prayer is not coming from Him. It is the work of someone else. Take the Savior at His word when He says, “Whoever comes to me I will never drive away. . . . And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but

raise them up at the last day” (John 6:37-39, NIV).Jesus understands how hard it is to stay connected to God

while we are here on earth. He knows how busy life can be. He spent whole nights in prayer so He could be ready for the day ahead! The key is making time to spend with God. The more you talk with God just as you would a friend, the more you will experi-ence how wonderful He is.

This week, identify three things that keep you or distract you from having a real interaction with God. Plan how you are going to close the door on those distractions, and journal a few thoughts about your experience doing this throughout the week. Also, think of someone you could hold yourself accountable to for this activity. (You will discuss the concept of accountability in class on Sabbath.)

The real miracle is that the weather’s been so mild this past week. Even though it’s the middle of July, it didn’t get too hot in there for her, and it’s a good place for catching mice,” he said.

Both of their parents de-cided to take Jada straight to a veterinarian, who said that

aside from being underweight and dehydrated, she was OK to return home. But he encouraged Spence to keep a close eye on her food and water intake so she wouldn’t overdo it in one go.

When they got home, Dad gathered them in a circle around Spence, who was holding Jada, and thanked God for allowing her to return home safely to them. He also prayed that they would all learn a lesson from Spence’s unfaltering faith in God and that they would always remember to put their trust in Him.

And from the looks of it, their prayers are be-ing answered!” exclaimed Pas-tor Greely. “Now Pete, I know you’re very tired right now, so I’m going to leave you and go tell Sam that you’re awake. But before I go would you mind if I just have a prayer for you?”

Sam folded his hands and bowed his head.

“Dear God,” prayed Pastor Greely. “ We just want to thank

You for saving Pete’s life. Lord, we pray that You would contin-ue to be with him as he heals. And God, we would ask that You would strengthen him physi-cally, mentally, and spiritually. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

“Amen,” Pete whispered. As Pete lay there, dazed by

the medicine and all that had happened, he started coming to a realization. He was actually starting to believe in God again. He was glad he had a second chance to get to know Him. It would take some time, but he wanted to get to know the God of second chances.

A fter Pentecost the number of believers continued to grow. Everyone was in awe

of the miracles that the disciples performed. They listened eagerly to their teaching. They spent hours together praying, praising, and studying. Since they were together most of the day, they shared their meals in one another’s homes. Those who were able sold their possessions and gave to people in need. For a while even nonbeliev-ers were excited about the changes made in their friends and family

members. The believers were a loving group of people.

Yet the priests, elders, and other religious leaders began to per-secute the believers. Following Christ was becoming more dif-ficult. The disciples decided it was time to do something.

“Peter, we’ve got a problem,” one of the disciples said when they met for their daily planning time. “Many of the new believers are being thrown out of their homes by their families, and they have no place to go.”

“That’s right,” John added. “Some of the men have lost their jobs. So they cannot provide for their families.”

“ We have to find some way to help them,” Peter said.

“ Why don’t we put out a general announcement?” Matthias sug-gested. “ We can have everyone contribute what they can to help those who don’t have food, clothing, or a place to stay.”

“ Will some of you organize this right away?” Peter asked. “ We’ll need a list of what is turned in so we know what we have to distribute.”

In just a few days the disciples made contacts with other believ-ers. They had plenty of things for people, but now they needed help distributing them. So they invited the believers to contribute to the distribution of the supplies. Within a short time, the volunteers were ready to start working. Some were willing to help because they wanted to work in return for the food and shelter they would be given. Others helped because they loved God and His people.

Soon those who were struggling to provide for their families receiv- ed from the followers of Christ what they needed: food, shelter, clothing. With these needs taken care of, the new believers were free to share the good news of the

gospel with others. Some of the believers had sold

property and donated the money to the community of believers. Several others were also plan-ning to contribute in the same way. One man, Barnabas, from another country, sold his land and journeyed to Jerusalem to give the money he received for it to the

apostles.“I now see why

Jesus commanded us to care about our neighbors as much as we care about

ourselves,” Matthew said. The apostles and the other

believers were happy and grateful for the outpouring of love. It made them want to love and serve God—and one another—even more. The description of the early Christian church recorded by Luke in the book of Acts serves as an example of authentic Christianity for us who live in the present age:

“All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and posses-sions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2:44-47, NIV).

Do you like organizing things and people? It’s a gift to be able

to do that. The disciples had their hands full after Pentecost, with people losing homes and jobs because of their faith. But they pulled together, and ev-
