Thoughts from the Chairperson Hello Everyone, Firstly, on behalf of the committee and residents we would like to offer our deepest sympathy to Kurt’s family. This is a real shock, and I know how much he will be missed. Cheryl and I have arranged flowers to be sent to the family from all of us. Too hard to say goodbye just yet. Some Residents in the Village have been kept busy with the new activities which have started over the past few weeks. Mahjong seems to have taken off and is enjoyed by a number of residents along with the Book Club, the Men’s Happy Hour, and the monthly BBQ which I believe has been postponed until around September because of the cold nights but will resume again as the weather warms up. Pot black is still being played by the Ladies each Saturday, along with scrabble, craft and Bingo which is a great success every second Wednesday. The Mothers’ Day Concert and Happy Hour was a happy night with every one enjoying “Chris” our singer followed by the finger food which put a nice finishing touch to a very enjoyable evening. The shopping bus to Black Pepper in Cottesloe was enjoyed by all who went even Norm who found a book shop while the ladies were busy trying on new clothes and having afternoon tea which was put on by the shop owner. Mind you I have heard some of the ladies came home with lots of exciting new clothes for the winter. The Bus to the DFO was full and I am sure that those who went enjoyed themselves. The Birthday Morning Tea for May was a happy occasion. We have so many of the Residents who celebrate their birthday in May. The Cancer Morning was held on the 30th May and I will let you all know how much money was raised along with the sixpences which have been kindly donated by the residents. It is amazing how much each 5c amounts to over the period of 12 months. And, last but not least Dr. Jack is still coming to our Village so if you haven’t already had your flu needle please think about it and maybe make an appointment with him to get your Flu Vaccination. Keep well and warm Bye for now. Regards Marg

A Word from Cheryl

FISH & CHIPS – Before I forget to say this for another month, I’m getting it in

first before I say anything else! In the interest of saving paper, we are not

going to issue Fish & Chip order forms to every resident every month. All the

regular residents will receive an order form in your letterbox. Fish & Chips will

still be advertised on the planner and in the newsletter to remind anyone else

who may wish to place an order. Hopefully this will work out and save some

money on printing costs.

Remember the Budget Meeting is on this month, at 11am in Fontenay Hall on

the 20th June. Budget papers will be issued prior to the meeting, please bring

them along with you.

As for the rest of the world, it continues to remain round, can become a little

square but we push on. The staff have all been busy doing some training over

the past month and brushing up on some of their skills covering:

• Food Safety

• Safe Chemical Use

• Fire Safety

• Occupational Health and Safety along with Risk Management

• How to Prevent Slips, Trips and Falls and

• Manual Handling

I am working on Awareness in August and Safety in September and getting

some guest speakers together. These talks will be of benefit to both the

residents and the staff. I will give out more information closer to the time.

Happy to still receive your ideas on any talks you may enjoy.

We have quite a few falls in the village and this month I have included a “Build

Your Balance” flyer so some of you can do a bit of practice and see if it helps

you Stay on Your Feet.

We have put a new blind up in the Gazebo in the centre close to Stock Road

and hope it keeps the afternoon sun of everyone. We have also planted a

Curry Tree in the garden opposite unit 9 on Waddell roadside for those who

enjoy some curry.

We had a bit of a security breech in the village last month with a lady (Julie)

doing air-conditioner cleaning who somehow had a list of names of the

residents with phone numbers. I can assure every resident this was not issued

by the office as we just don’t share your information. It is a mystery to us.

Roger is doing something very special for the residents in July, some of you will

be very special and recognised in a very special way and all other residents will

be guests. Keep your eye out in the letter box this month for your invitation.

I am off to Sydney this month and away from Friday 7th June and not returning

until Monday the 17th June. Greg’s Mum is turning 90 and all 11 of us from WA

are going over for the big event. We are all on the same plane together and all

staying in the same house together. The local Coles where we are going to is

opened from 6am to 12MN! One day WA, the wait a while state, will catch

up😊

After writing my report last Friday and the world was round, we all know it has

gone square again. Losing such a great friend and co- worker is devastating to

all the staff and to you as residents. We all loved you Kurt, you were taken far

too young and we are going to miss you heaps. Remember to give each other a

hug. We have sent flowers to Lauren from the Bicton Community. Our deepest

sympathy to Kurt’s wife Lauren, Teneka and Lee. XXXXXXX

Welcome to our new resident……Kevin in Villa 11.

We all hope you settle in well. Please don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. We

are all here to help, nothing is too much trouble or a bother, just ask and

someone will be there.

Privacy

As residents of this village, we ask that you all please respect each other’s right

to privacy.

The sharing of other resident’s personal information, including telephone

numbers, without their consent is not permitted, even if you are only sharing

this information within your own family.

If a resident gives consent to your family having their telephone number that is

acceptable.

We publish the list of resident’s telephone numbers to you all so you are able

to contact each other. However, this is confidential information and should

not be issued into the wider community.

Project Marmalade

As we are producing a lot of citrus fruit in the village, Terri has decided that we

should produce our own marmalade to sell at our annual Village Open and

Market Day in November.

At the moment we are putting out the call for empty preserve jars suitable for

the bottling of our marmalade.

If you can contribute to our ‘jar drive’ please take your empty jars to the

kitchen in Hammersmith House.

Dr Jack Yap

Just a reminder that Dr Jack has changed his day starting this month. He will

now be in the village every Friday from 11am to 2pm. Appointments can be

made by:

Phoning Kaleeya Health direct on 1300 155 674

Emailing [email protected]

Phoning the office on 9330 0100

For regular patients of Dr Jack, I have magnets available for your fridge with

the After Hours Contact info for you. If you do not have one, please let us know

at the office and it will be issued.

We only had 6 residents put their names down for Molescan to come in and

we needed 20, so that is out…..but plan B is Dr Jack will check any resident

(bulk billed) who may want a skin check carried out😊, so really all is good.

New Home Visiting Continence Service

Do you have bladder or bowel health concerns such as incontinence, or find

yourself rushing to get to the toilet on time, or wake several times at night to

go to the toilet?

These common issues can often be treated or made more manageable by

making a few simple changes to your daily routine.

Bladder and Bowel Health Australia (a Western Australian Not for Profit

organisation) are now offering a Home Visiting Continence Service. If you are

unable to access other services, our experienced Continence nurse can

conduct a comprehensive continence assessment in the privacy and comfort of

your home. Dee can also provide advice on continence subsidies, appropriate

pads, pants and bed protection if required.

Costs for this service may be covered by a Home Care Package or heavily

subsidised for those receiving Commonwealth Home Support Program Services

who have a Pension Concession Card. For more information please call

Deborah or Dee at Bladder and Bowel Health Australia on 9386 9777.

Man Power

It took some extra man power by both Chen and Bill to remove the root system

from the lime tree that once stood in Bill and Marie’s garden.

Good job boys, well done!

Chen looks extremely proud of his efforts.

How heavy is it Bill?

Muriel and Audrey

Muriel came back to say hello to us all last week. She gave a wonderful speech

about how she has settled into her new home and made some new friends.

She does still miss her old friends, but she is very happy in her new home,

everything is done for her and she really has a new lease on life. It is nice to

see her with her dear friend Audrey and looking so well.

Audrey also shared her secret weapon to good ageing…keep a hip flask in your

handbag full of brandy “you just need a small nip” and it treats everything.

Audrey stated she has helped many people with her treatment. Joan was

sitting beside Audrey and is going to make sure the next time she falls she will

do right beside Audrey, so she gets a little nip for “recovery” purposes only of

course.
