Joseph was betrayed by his own brothers and sold into slavery.


The people of Israel were forced to become slaves in Egypt.


Job lost all his family and his possessions in one day.


David had to flee many times from Saul who was trying to kill him.


Paul was beaten and imprisoned on numerous occasions.


Jesus was beaten, nailed to a cross, and forsaken by His own Father.

So many have experienced a broken heart…

When your heart is broken…

Words cannot describe the pain and suffering.You may feel downcast and dejected. Sleeping problems. Eating problems. Frequent crying. Loneliness. Isolation. Depression. Feelings of helplessness and despair.You may think that no one cares.You may think there is no hope for you.

He Really Does Care

Psalm 56:8 “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected my tears in Your bottle. You have recorded each one in Your book.”

Psalm 68:20 “Our God is a God of deliverances/victories.”

“Cast all your cares/anxieties/worries upon God because He cares about you.”

God cares about you, and He can help you get through whatever is troubling you, and He can heal you of your broken heart.

God not only CAN help you,

He WILL help you, and He

WILL heal your broken heart.

Psalm 147:3

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their sorrows.”

We can do a lot of things ourselves to help us get through our difficulties, but there’s only so much we can do on our own.

Ultimately it is God who is the one who heals our broken hearts. He is the one who knows how to bind up our sorrows.

There is no shame in going to a doctor when you are sick.

V11 says, “God is pleased with those . . . who wait with hope for His mercy.”

Psalmist made this statement in the midst of praising God!

V4-5 “He counts the number of the stars; He gives names to all of them. Great is our Lord and abundant in strength; His understanding is infinite.”

V8-9 “He covers the heavens with clouds, He provides rain for the earth, He makes grass to grow on the mountains. He gives to the beast its food, and to the young ravens which cry.”

V15-18 “He sends forth His command to the earth; His word runs very swiftly. He gives snow like wool; He scatters the frost like ashes. He casts forth His ice as fragments; who can stand before His cold? He sends forth His word and melts them; He causes His wind to blow and the waters to flow.”

In the midst of all these grand statements about God’s awesome strength and power, the psalmist says, “God heals the brokenhearted.”

The psalmist doesn’t say that God may heal the brokenhearted sometimes, or that God healed a few broken hearts in the past or only some broken hearts.

This is who God is. This is what God does.

Present tense. He heals. He has healed. He is healing now. And He will continue to heal the brokenhearted and bind up their sorrows.

This is the work of God.

Isaiah 61:1

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives and freedom to them that are bound.”

Healing broken hearts is also the work of Christ.

Luke 4:16-19

Early in His ministry, Jesus went to the synagogue in Nazareth on the Sabbath.

When He stood up to take His turn to read, He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah, and He read from chapter 61.

Luke 4:20-21

“He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant and sat down; and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. And He began to say to them, ‘Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.’”

No matter how hard the task, when someone was sent by God to His work, he was sure to succeed!

Exodus 3-12

Moses was sent by God to stand before Pharaoh and deliver the people of Israel from their bondage in Egypt.

Moses was the most unlikely of persons to accomplish such a task. But by the power of God, Moses did what he was sent to do.

Joshua 6

Joshua was sent by God to conquer the city of Jericho by the most unlikely means.

They did nothing more than march and shout.

By the power of God, those walls came tumbling down and the city was conquered.

Judges 7

Gideon was sent by God to defeat the Midianites with only 300 men.

They did nothing more than blow their trumpets and break their pitchers as God had instructed.

By the power of God, Gideon’s small army was victorious.

1 Kings 17

Elijah the prophet was sent by God to a widow who lived in Zarephath.

She had very little food, and then her son died.

By the power of God, Elijah provided her with endless food, and he brought her son back to life.

Jonah 1-3

Jonah was sent by God to preach to the people of Nineveh.

Jonah was determined not to do what God sent him to do.

After being swallowed by a great fish, Jonah finally went and preached, and the people repented.

There’s not a sorrow or a grief or a situation so terrible that the Lord cannot fix and overcome!

“What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?”

There’s not a sorrow or a grief or a situation so terrible that the Lord cannot fix and overcome!

Do you have a broken heart?


Tell the Lord how much you are hurting. Tell Him you need His healing touch. He will hear your cries for help.



And He will reach down, and take your hand, and walk you through your pain.




It may happen quickly; it may take a long time. But it will happen in His time.
