Halls Head Bowling & Recreation Club Club of the Year 2016 – City of Mandurah SUPPORT THOSE WHO SUPPORT US Tuesday, 4 th June 2019 Good afternoon Members. We hope you are all enjoying this fantastic weather. Winter is around the corner so get some sun rays while you can. Exciting News!!! Clubs WA Industry Awards The Clubs WA Industry Awards for Excellence recognise the outstanding individual and collective achievements of Western Australia community clubs and reward best practice across the sector. The 2019 Clubs WA Industry Awards for Excellence is going to be held at Crown Perth on Saturday 29th June 2019. **We are the finalists in medium size category ‘Club of the Year’ and Community Partnerships, joint with Peel Bowling. We also make the Milestone Awards for 30 years.** We’ll keep you posted on how we go. Men’s Bowls Captain – Doug Myers Twenty-four bowlers from Eaton visited Halls Head on Sunday 26 May for our annual scroungers’ day. They were joined by 29 local players on the greens with Halls Head bowlers coming away with the honours on the day. Kelly Kay was the winner after beating Keith Guelfi in a play-off in the final and Stuart Anderson came third. This was the first time that Halls Head had won the event. There was some speculation that Keith had thrown the final against Kelly after it was realised that he had won $300 by buying Kelly in the Calcutta auction. ‘Not true’ says Keith. 'My pride is worth more that that paltry sum’. Perhaps so! The Eaton vs Halls Head scroungers always has a great atmosphere and this year’s event was no exception to that. Mike Barker and Hugh Donnelly, ably assisted by bar manager Kerri, Heather Little and Joy Burkett, added to the comraderie by producing an excellent hamburger and salad lunch. The Monday Nominated Pairs continues to have strong support from members with around thirty teams playing each week (38 teams yesterday). Wednesday Social bowls is also attracting good numbers, averaging about 40 bowlers per session. Several new faces are being seen on these days, an encouraging sign for the club. Halls Head is hosting the Wednesday Open Triples this week and we have 30 teams registered to play. This event is the first of two that Halls Head will be running this Winter, the next one scheduled for Wednesday 14 August. Relatively new member Chris Hill has undertaken the role of getting our competition results into the newspaper. He also helps out with Friday Mixed Scroungers and Men’s Social Bowls events. These efforts should serve as encouragement for some regular bowlers to help out now and then. Wink, wink; nudge, nudge; say no more! I am going away for two or three months next Saturday and Vice-captain Denny Berson will take my place while I am away. It will be appreciated if you give him all the support he needs to keep the ‘show on the road’. The Bias Newsletter
