A MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR
Making Time for the Elderly
Their day starts out the same as the day before; wake up, get your bearings, get some breakfast, maybe take a bath, a
nap, lunch, more of a nap, followed by dinner, then bed after a while.
Maybe in between those times, catch a little television, or maybe a game with some friends. Read the paper? Possibly.
Get a visit from someone? Maybe.
The scenario I’m describing pertains to our elderly members, who, by the way, have been heavy on my heart.
They are a generation whose time has come - and for many, has gone, as far as working and generating income for the
family.
They have spent years working, scrimping, saving, building and securing their family’s future and legacy.
They are now in their “retirement” years. Where once in their lives they tried so hard to gather time; they now have time in
abundance; and yet, time may be short for them on this earth!
They essentially are “young people” in an older body that doesn’t function quite as efficiently as it once did, and the “hard
drive” takes a while to boot up and recall information.
Many have taken the “time” to give of themselves to their family, their church, their community.
Now, there are some who face loneliness due to simply being forgotten.
And, when it’s time for them to pass into the next life, we essentially lose a library of information they alone possessed (I
heard or saw that phrase somewhere, and it has stuck with me!).
I’m not trying to paint a bleak picture here; rather, to bring to light a situation I see when I do visits. We all get caught up in
our daily lives, obligations, concerns, pressures, etc.
Please keep in mind that this is not meant to point a finger at ANYONE in our church family; rather, it is a stark reality that we have some people in our community who are missing something in their life that could be easily rectified; and that is a
visitation.
I was raised in a family that believed in tending to their elderly. Grandparents lived with the family until it simply wasn’t fea-
sible, and then other options were explored and decided upon.
1 Timothy 5:8 rings in my mind: “But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he
has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”
Some people look at the word “provide” as a roof over their heads and food. While that is true, it also applies to providing
companionship, love, communication and patience.
The crux of my thoughts is this: If you haven’t done so already, would you consider taking the time to visit someone, or at the very least, call them and briefly visit with them on a weekly basis? Think of the happiness you’d bring them, knowing
that someone was thinking of them and took time out of their busy schedule to simply drop by and say, “hello.”
Such a small gesture; yet so profoundly impactful in a person's life!
Pastor Keith

SPIRITUAL COUNCIL MINUTES The Spiritual Council of Bethel UCC met in Duensing Chapel on January 9, 2020 at 6 pm. Present include Michelle
Francis, Stephen Luther, Dean Griepenstroh, Curt Stukenholtz, Nancy Brown and Pastor Keith. Minutes from December
meeting were not available for the meeting, will be made available at a later time.
Pastor Report: Pastor Keith reported that Rabbi Richards Bible Study “The Biblical Feats of the Lord” started January 8 th
with 8 people. It will continue for 8 weeks, ending February 27th with no cost to attendees. Bethel Brotherhood will meet
February 1st at Sapp Brothers. Sunday School and Confirmation started back on January 5th.
Old Business: Discussion on Christmas Services were held, felt they both went well. Altar communion by intinction was
well received. Sliced gluten free bread from Walmart was used. It was noted that the side candles were not lit for the
services. Will need to remember to have the ushers be sure this is done next year. Liked having the Confirmands help
with the services, feel this helps to keep the kids engaged. Pastor feels that new year he will have the Council look over
the program prior to the service to prevent any confusion. Question raised if members of the Council can help with the
distribution of the elements, Pastor will look into this for us. We will also need to be sure the pew lights are tight on the
pews. Two fell and broke and could have caused damage to the carpet. LED battery operated lights were discussed.
January 7 the decorations were put away without difficulty. The Confirmands will be asked to choose a verse to study,
they have the Apostles Creed memorized and are working to understand the Statement of Faith. Pastor met with the
NCTC this week and they were happy with his Tree Lighting Service and the Town Crier. He would be willing to do again
next year, hoping to get Fareway and Walmart on board to have the Wisemen and Crier outside the building. This year
we had no volunteers for the Wisemen, hope to get some for next year. No feedback has been received on the Coffee/
Tea Bar. Time and Talent Sheets due in by January 26th. Need to remind folks to bring them in. The Council will be bring
the proposal for the Sound System to the congregation on the 26th. We have received an anonymous donation if we are
will to go through with this. Neal Niebrugge volunteered to continue on grant process if the congregation is interested in
giving to the general fund and sound system fund. $850 and food products were collected at this years Living Nativity
scene.
New Business: Election of officers for 2020 were held. Stephen Luther President, Jen Tietz Vice President, Dean
Griepenstroh 2nd Communion Steward, Curt Stukenholtz 1st Communion Steward and Nancy Brown Secretary. Michelle
was thanked for all her work on last years council. She has volunteered to continue sending welcome cards to visitors
that sign the guest register. Stephen took over the meeting as President. Agreed to continue in holding meetings on the
first Wednesday of each month at 6pm. Next month we will meet in Pastor’s Office February 6th. Anne from Harlan First
UMC will be touching base with us at the end of 2020 for the Living Last Supper Performance to be held Saturday March
27th 2021. Discussion was held about having an open forum of the congregation to get input on direction of where they
would like to see the church go and get some volunteers to help us meet those goals.
Activities coming up: January Bible Study 8th-Feb 19th, 2020 Installation of Officers 12th, Bethel Brotherhood Feb. 1st at

Dear Bethel Church Members:
The Council is putting forth a proposal to replace the sound system for the sanctuary. What we
have is an outdated analog system that is becoming more and more difficult to use with modern
technology. Weddings, special events, and getting a quality recording is impossible to deal with at
times. We have acquired two bids from the two companies in the state that do this type of work. It
was suggested that a committee be established to study this issue and get a third bid. A sign up
sheet for the requested committee will be in the back of the sanctuary or you can call the office to
volunteer.
There will be a special congregational meeting on the 23rd of February to discuss and vote on
this proposal. We need to move forward on the fundraising and grant writing to raise the funds and
will not do so without your approval of the project. If a third bid is not found by April 1 that beats the
lower one that we have, then we will have the funds and permission in place to get the job done.
The much lower of the 2 bids is split up into 3 phases that are listed below. We are only looking
to accomplish the first phase and possibly the third if we have the support and the funds. We are
asking for permission to spend $26,000 for phase one. This is above what the initial bid is, but we
will be fundraising, grant writing and searching for other outside sources. Depending on the amount
of time we need to raise the money so we do not put the church in a financial pinch, will determine
the final cost. The price ranges are from last year's price and an estimated amount that inflation,
tariffs, and the possible need for a dedicated laptop to run portions of this system.
Please read through the information and pray on this issue. We need to get our voice out to
the congregation every Sunday at a minimum. We need to grow to bring our church back to the
thriving church family that helped raise So many families. This update allows us to reach out to
people looking for a welcoming, conservative, solid church that feels like home. We know that we
have that, but we need to make sure people out there know it.
In Mark 16:15, Jesus commanded his disciples to “go into all the world and preach the gospel
to every creature.” To preach means to communicate, to “broadcast” the gospel.
Bethel has a tremendous opportunity to reach out to Nebraska City and beyond. Bethel can
and should be that voice.
Continued on pg. 10…….

Phase 1:
Presonus Digital/Analog mixing council - $21,716.28 - $23,453
Up to 16 components
Direct recording
Atlas speakers and amplifier - designed for spaces like ours
2 Shure wireless microphones, one handheld, one lavalier, 3 new choir area mics
ADA compliant system is included if ours needs replacing
Upgrades to the Nursery and basement connections
Installation, fine tuning and training of our people
Phase 2: This is for another discussion in years to come.
This is a modular system that will allow increased capabilities in the future. As we grow and need to
expand into video aspects of Audio Visual presentations, having our service aired on-line, or
recorded for our homebound, that plan has been developed as well, but we can do that
later. $20,229.92 - $21,848.32
A third phase was planned for a mobile system that would make programs such as the Living Last
Supper and Christmas pageants more enjoyable. We would be able to hear everyone. This would
be nice to do with phase 1. $1704.80 - $1,841.19
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Bethel Church Council

The Nebraska City High School Pioneer Baseball Team’s Quintin Holman has signed his Letter Of Intent with Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. Holman is extremely excited the opportunity to play at Morningside and was happy with the whole recruiting experience. "I personally chose them because it's not a far away school it's a big school that's very competitive in all sports. They really had a lot of interest in me, as soon as I put my interest in them they offered it right back. They invited me to a workout with them. So we called they put a scholarship on the offer, and I kind of already decided before hand to go to Morningside, just because I did like the atmosphere there. As soon as they offered me the scholarship I almost broke down crying, because I was so happy, and I accepted it right then and
there." Holman also enjoyed the family atmosphere at Morningside and already has a plan to further his education. "They invited me for lunch and I ate with the baseball team, and it just felt like a family atmosphere. It felt kind of homey. My plan is to study accounting and get my CPA." The Morningside Baseball team is very competitive and went 26-19 last year with a record of 14-4 at home with the addition of Holman the future looks bright for the Mustangs.
