President’s Report 2017- 2018 (cont) Do you realise it will now be 10 years we have been at Claremont RSL? So…Starting tonight, courtesy or the RSL Club, we will be having a members draw. You must be here to win and you must be a financial member. The prize is a din-ner voucher to be used here at Jazz Club. Thanks to bar staff who look after our most important needs Please give a round of applause for them, the RSL Club and the kitchen staff.

Just remember, this is your club and we welcome your input, so don’t be shy. Our mission is to “Promote Australian Jazz and Jazz in Australia”. And as I tell you every year, this includes all genres and all ages. Once again I could not do this job without the support of an amazing committee, so personally want to thank the outgoing committee and welcome any incoming committee members; I know that each person has an expertise that will enhance the club and together we will do amazing things to keep the Hobart Jazz Club on top in Australia. Some of them have been on the committee for a number of years and I value the friendships that have developed over that time. At this point I also want to mention our volunteers, we always need an extra pair of hands, so to you who kindly offer help when we ask we are so grateful. Thank you.

From me to you - I thank you the members, for your support to me as President, and for your faith in your club; your warmth, your smiles and your trust; without any this Jazz Club would not exists. I hope we will continue for a long time to come to have this social and musical interaction with people who have a common interest and pleasure: Jazz.

Ross Jazz Jam A huge thank you to all the wonderful musicians and audience who came to the Jam at Ross. Pictured right Vicki on drums, Jamie on guitar and David on piano.

President’s Report 2017- 2018 Are the years going faster? Or are we just so busy everything flies past us. So much has been going on with jazz club, I will try and summarise. Hot August Jazz festival is just as strong as it ever was BUT we can’t be compla-cent…your committee works tirelessly to find the funding to create this wonderful event. This year we have had the Calendar (sponsored by Clarence city Council) and we will have the Jazz Cheese and Wine at the MAC on Sunday June 17…put that in your diary. It’s always a great afternoon. I think the thing I love the most about Hot August Jazz is at the end of the night all the musos (still standing) congregate at the Republic bar and they dance, sing and socialise, something they rarely get to do together because they are usually working. The musos have expressed this to the committee and I must say it brings a smile to my dial. Taz JazzFest will be at Lufra this year May 25, 26, 27; we have booked into Tidal Waters in St Helens for 2019. We envisage alternating between the 2 venues all going well. Please make sure you have booked in for Lufra as I know there are not many rooms left. Of course the Ross Jazz Jam is on this weekend, Sunday at Man’O Ross Hotel. Always good to see the whole of the Tassie bunch get together for a spot of fun and jazz. Our monthly events continue to be well attended and we have some great concerts happening here this year. Jazz Jam (JJ) is going strong with Brian Parkinson as the coordinator. JJ is on the third Tuesday of every month at the Duke of Wellington. Free entry and meals avail-able. We have been getting and average of 8 students and about the same number of experienced musos coming along to play and reasonable sized audiences. This project is funded by the Conservatorium of Music, The Duke of Wellington and the Jazz Club. The purpose of Jazz Jam is to give young musicians the opportunity to play with experienced musos and have the chance to perform in front of real audiences. All musicians are welcome; you can catch up with JJ on Facebook.

I have been president for roughly 17 years, and we wouldn’t have done any of the things we do without the wonderful committee and the support of you our members. We have many great music acts come through the jazz clubs monthly events and festivals and I am pleased to see so many young ones still coming up through the ranks and keeping jazz alive.

Jazz at the Victoria Tavern (from Brian Parkinson). Jazz at the Victoria tavern (next door to Hadley’s) – can this be true? Well, yes, the Dave Sikk Quartet (Fred Bradshaw drums, me on bass, Aaron Entresz on guitar and Dave Sikk on vocals and jazz harmonica) are performing there every Thursday from 8 till 11. Steve is the new owner of the Victoria Tavern. He is a very competent cock-tail mixer, and a very friendly person, easy to talk to. He has completely re-vamped the Tavern, creating a British pub atmosphere. And, he wants Jazz on Thursdays. So the Dave Sikk Quartet can be heard there every Thursday fro 8 till 11. A Hobart venue committed to jazz! That is something we (you) need to support. Pictured: Dave Sikk Quartet

Jazz at the Victoria Tavern.

While I am rambling on, another venue supporting live jazz is The Duke (corner of Barrack and Macquarie streets). The Jazz Jam happens every third Tuesday, and is funded by UTAS, the venue, and your own Hobart Jazz club. It features and supports up and coming young (college and conservatorium) musos; but, we also like to re-enforce the notion that music is something you have for life, by showcasing some “more mature” performers (never at the expense of performance time for the students). For example, on Tuesday March 20th, Ian Cocking (bass) and his wife Jen (vocals) astounded the audience with heir arrangement of Johnny Mandel’s “Close Enough for Love”. Then a friend of theirs from New York, Jeff Hunter, floored us all with some simply beautiful piano/vocal work, using some exquisite chord voicings. After this, Kartika (who, with her husband Doug runs the Duke), was summonsed to the stage. She sang “God Bless the Child”. Kartika has a great voice and a phenomenal range. When I say she brought the house down, I am not exaggerating. Some younger musos were very wide eyed (the intention, really). This gig is very worthwhile supporting – every 3rd Tuesday 7.30 till 10.
