TAKE THE ROAD A LITTLE LESS TRAVELED

PROS, CONS, MAKES, AND MODELS

In this ebook, you’ll discover useful information and

comparisons of a variety of lightweight recreational vehicles.

As a family that has enjoyed the RV and camping lifestyle for

many years, we want to share what we’ve learned. Lightweight

RVs are a great choice for many campers because they’re easy

to tow, even in hilly terrain, which is good news for those of us

who like to take the road a little less traveled.

If you’re just beginning your RV adventure or retiring the “big rig” for a more fuel-

efficient choice, you’ll find helpful information in these pages on the pros and cons of

choosing a lightweight RV. We’ll define what a lightweight RV is exactly, the various

materials that make up construction of vehicles in this class, and requirements for

towing. We’ll also highlight our two most popular lightweight RVs. You can compare

model specifications, features, towing needs, and price range. We’ll look at:

• Bullet 274BHS

• Wildwood Heritage Glen 282RK

WILL THERE BE ROOM FOR MY S’MORES?

THE SWAY FACTOR KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Lightweight RVs are exactly what their name implies, RVs constructed with lightweight materials and

components. Their reduced weight means they don’t require a fuel-guzzling, heavy-duty towing vehicle.

That’s great news! But if you choose to tow your new RV with a lighter-duty vehicle, remember there

will be limitations to the total weight you can tow. It’s easy to stow several hundred pounds of food and

gear, especially if you’re going for more than a weekend jaunt. So, keep that weight limit in mind when

you’re packing your marshmallows and graham crackers.

If towing a vehicle in windy conditions is a

concern, make sure you ask about the “sway

factor” of each model you’re considering for

purchase. Often, lightweight RVs are effected

more greatly by wind and passing trucks on the

highways than standard recreational vehicles. Do

you plan to travel through a mountain pass in the

Rockies or over the straits of Mackinac on The

Mighty Mac? Then a lightweight RV may not be

the best choice for you.

Before you even visit a dealership, know the

basics of owning a lightweight RV. Not only will

you narrow down the features that are most

important to you and your family, but you’ll

also be prepared to ask the right questions when

talking to a professional.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A LIGHTWEIGHT RV?There are two categories of lightweight RVs: lightweight and ultra-lightweight. The heaviest trailers

in this category top out at 8,000 pounds. New materials and technology, such as fiberglass panels and

lightweight insulation, have paved the way for this special breed of RV made for easy towing and lower

fuel consumption.

Lightweight RVs don’t require a heavy-duty towing vehicle because of their design and construction,

opening up the RV experience to many more camping enthusiasts. Excluding pop-up campers,

lightweight RVs can be classified into these styles:

Mini (Lightweight) Travel Trailer

Lightweight, Expandable Hybrid RV

Lightweight Sport Utility RVs (aka: Toy Haulers)

Lightweight Fifth-Wheel Trailers

Mini lightweight

travel trailers tend to

be under 23 feet long

and the newest models

offer designer-grade

interiors, slide-outs,

bunk beds, and built-

in generators.

Expandable hybrid

RVs feature the rigid

body of a travel trailer

with expanding canvas

areas, usually sleeping

compartments off the

front and/or back. You

get the full canvas-

camping experience

with less setup time

and a little more

between you and the

elements.

The Sport Utility RV

is often referred to

as a “Toy Hauler”

because of the garage

area built into the

rear. This space

can be used for

hauling motorcycles,

ATVs, and personal

watercraft.

The fifth-wheel trailer

gets its name from the

large hitch pin that

attaches the trailer

to a special mount in

the bed of a pickup

truck, making it easier

and more stable to

maneuver than a

travel trailer.

PROS

CONS

There are many pros to owning a lightweight RV. Their light materials and sturdy construction makes

them towable by a variety of vehicles. But don’t be fooled by their smaller footprint. Many models offer

the latest in design features and amenities such as high-end interiors, bunk beds, and even TV options.

Lightweight RVs are easy to tow by a variety of vehicles including standard pick-up trucks, SUVs,

and some minivans so you can save a little money by not investing in a heavy-duty towing vehicle.

Score! But remember to refer to the owner’s manual of your towing vehicle for the maximum towing

capacity. You want to select a vehicle that can tow your RV when it is packed; don’t choose a tow

vehicle based on the dry weight of your RV.

Lightweight RVs are more fuel efficient because they weigh less overall than other choices.

Additionally, this category of RVs often has an aerodynamic design meaning less wind resistance

during driving or towing. Again, saving you precious fuel!

And if you choose to purchase a lightweight travel trailer, you will also have the convenience of a

vehicle to explore the local area once you set up your “house” at the campsite.

If you plan to be a full-time RVer, participate in extended trips, or travel to regions with extreme

temperatures, then a lightweight RV may not be for you. Smaller than their standard counterparts,

there is less interior space for you and your family, as well as any recreational items that you may

have thought about bringing on your trip.

The lightweight construction may not be as durable as standard-weight recreational vehicles and

may not hold up to extensive traveling. Additionally, the materials used are less efficient at

controlling climate, so if you’re in the desert Southwest or the snowy Midwest you are probably

going to feel the impact of those temperatures.

You may also want to consider your skill level at towing and maneuvering your lightweight RV.

Lightweight RVs are more affected by high winds, so you will need to be confident in your ability to

stay safe on the roads.

PRO TIP Take extra care by purchasing a weight distribution and sway control hitch, such as Blue-Ox Swaypro.

WHERE TO STARTNow that you know the basics, where should you start your RV research? Do some exploring on the

Internet, talk to other RV owners, and take advantage of the knowledgeable sales people at your

dealership of choice. Also, ask yourself these questions to narrow down your lightweight RV options:

• Do you love the outdoors, including varying temperatures?

• Do you prefer a quick camp setup?

• What is your total budget, thinking about not only your RV but fuel and supplies too?

• Can you tow with your current vehicle or do you need to make an additional purchase?

• How much room do you need for you and your family?

• Do you prefer a simple experience or all the comforts of home?

Keep reading for a quick comparison of RV Wholesale Superstore’s most popular models in the

lightweight RV category.

LIGHTWEIGHT RVS ARE A GREAT CHOICE FOR YOUR CAMPING ADVENTURE

WHY A LIGHTWEIGHT RV?

SO MANY OPTIONS!

The open road is calling! Is a lightweight RV right for you? Remember, lightweight RVs don’t require

a heavy-duty towing vehicle because of their design and construction—opening up the RV lifestyle to

many more people. They’re a great choice for many campers because they’re easy to tow, even in hilly

terrain. Plus, new materials and technology, such as fiberglass panels and lightweight insulation, help

save you money when it comes to fuel costs.

Lightweight RVs are easy to tow by a variety of vehicles including standard pick-up trucks, SUVs,

and some minivans so you can save a little money by not investing in a heavy-duty towing vehicle.

Their lightweight and aerodynamic construction is also more fuel efficient because they reduce wind

resistance and weigh less overall than other choices.

Again, a lightweight RV may not be right for you if you plan to do extensive traveling or plan to visit

places that experience extreme temperatures. Because the construction is designed to reduce weight,

it often is less efficient at controlling the interior climate. Lightweight RVs are also more susceptible to

high winds.

When it comes to selecting a lightweight RV that fits your own unique needs, you can choose from

many styles and models. From mini travel trailers and expandable hybrids to toy haulers and

lightweight fifth-wheels, there is something for everyone. Maybe you are new to the RV lifestyle and

are looking for a lower cost option that still provides space for the whole family? A mini lightweight

trailer may fit your needs with slide-outs and bunk beds. Or maybe you travel with a group of outdoor

enthusiasts and spend your days racing jet skis across various lakes. Then a toy hauler or sport utility

RV may be the best choice for you.

Whatever you decide, the knowledgeable staff at RV Wholesale Superstore can help you. Our most

popular lightweight RVs, the Bullet 274BHS and the Wildwood Heritage Glen 282RK, offer stylish
